Ds has now remembered how to roll and is rolling everywhere. I know need to baby proof the house again as he has already tried to pull the DVD player of the shelf Blush

Swearwolf · 14/09/2016 18:45

I've got the Avent pump too, I don't find it all that effective. I've just bought this one, it just works by suction and will just stick to one while you feed on the other.

TheMshipIsBack · 14/09/2016 19:07

I still have my Avent single electric pump from DS. It really wasn't very good for me, I ended up with damaged nipples (but partly because I tried pumping too early). The Spectra S1 is miles better. I did have to change the flange for one side, though - shapewise they're a bit different, and I found the standard flange works best for one side and the larger one for the other. It's definitely worth testing different sizes, especially if you have smaller or larger than average boobs.

Me624 · 15/09/2016 18:04

Hope everyone has been having a good day! DS still has his cold but is in good spirits today and has napped loads which has been great for having some me time!

I emailed my boss today and I'm going to meet him on Monday to discuss my plans for returning to work. I've been putting off getting in touch to talk about it but DH said I might as well let them know and I'm going to meet a colleague for lunch on Monday so it makes sense to just pop in afterwards and deal with it. I'm pretty sure he'll be happy enough as I'm planning to go back full time and I'm sure he's expecting me to request part time so I'm sure it'll be a good meeting, just makes it all feel real Sad I am lucky though it won't be until January I go back, can't complain when I know some of you are already back!

sherazade · 15/09/2016 18:10

Well done and much admiration to all those who are pumping and going back to work !
Weaning has started as yusef has just hit 6 months. He has whatever we have mashed up with a bit of breastmilk and fed with spoon, twice a day. Alongside this finger foods to try but he mostly plays with it.
Still a boob monster but is settling at night . Have got him self soothing to sleep which made a huge difference . Tried the shush and pat technique which worked with no crying and he settles beautifully in his cot . When he wakes for a feed I bring him into bed and co sleep/feed but as it is less frequent (maybe around 2wice a night) it's fairly manageable .
Yusef is now cruising . Yes !
Never thought it was remotely possible.
He wants to climb and cruise everywhere and needs to be watched 24/7 as he gets himself in tricky places and he also lets go from cruising and falls. He is no longer interested in toys and just wants to move around !
Has anyone heard from beaut ? I remember she was going through a rough patch. Hope she's ok.

DomesticAnarchist · 15/09/2016 20:13

Me, you are absolutely entitled to complain as much as you want. No one else's situation dictates another person's feelings on a subject!

If I was you I'd be feeling equally apprehensive about it.

Wow, Sher! Cruising at the same time as weaning! That's amazing!

Not heard from Beaut. I often think of her and her toe-rag of a partner. Hope he sorted himself out and did some epic grovelling. I hope she's supported. Maybe she'll come back one day?!

Luxury-Thursday here, where DS2 is in nursery on-site and I get to feed him and have cuddles instead of pumping!

The workload is ramping up already though. I'm putting off a bunch of marking... better get it done, I suppose...!

1frenchfoodie · 15/09/2016 21:12

I had to look up cruising Blush - impressive stuff sher. Our house is in no way baby proofed and our 8 month old puppy will make things challenging once DD can't be confined to a playpen. For now sitting is her main achievement, along with shuffling backwards but she is up ina crawling position a lot so guess we better get on the case.

Back home on sat after a week of house/pet/granny sitting so plan to start weaning then. I've even ordered crumpets specially Smile after the discussion here.

Dom is DS happy for you to visit to feed then go again, it doesn't unsettle him? I get back to our village at 4 a couple of days DD will be in nursery until 6 and it hadn't occured to me to ask if I can pop in to feed her. You've got me thinking now.

Swearwolf · 16/09/2016 10:05

Oh god, the baby proofing! S isn't even properly on the move, but already this morning I put her on her playmat and went to the kitchen to make a cup of tea, only to find when I came back that she'd rolled/wormed across the floor and was happily munching a sheet of stickers out of ds's Hey Duggee magazine. We need to be more careful!

OP posts:
1frenchfoodie · 16/09/2016 10:25

swear is it sad to admit I love Hey Duggie. It is the only cartoon DD is aware of as it doesn't grate on me. She loves the music but tends to get distracted during the show itself.

Dottydoodoo · 16/09/2016 11:16

Swear there was a similar situation here on Wednesday, I ran upstairs to get a bib and came back to find DS had rolled off the playmat and was on his tummy on the wooden floor! What if he had tried to roll back and bumped his head! Shock He was fine but it made me worry!

DS has been asleep in the cot for over an hour. Omg!! I am pleased but I'm also desperate for him to wake up because when he does we are going to take him swimming. He's never been before and I'm so excited!

Me624 · 16/09/2016 11:39

Wow impressive to be cruising already sher! DS is commando crawling and he doesn't go very fast but already we've had a few knocks on the head! DH installed a stair gate at the top of the stairs at the weekend but I don't really want to cover everything in foam!

We had an almighty storm here last night. I have never heard thunder so loud. It went on for over an hour and amazingly DS slept through it all! DH and I did not ... we were wide awake. I finally got back to sleep about half 3 ... DS then decided to wake up at 4! Typical ...

Hope DS enjoys swimming Dotty! My DS loves it although he was a bit unsure the first time.

Swearwolf · 16/09/2016 14:05

What's not to love french?? We're big Messy fans here too Grin

OP posts:
Trinpy · 16/09/2016 16:49

I can't believe there's a cruising baby in this group already! What a strong baby!

I advanced searched beaut a little while back Blush to check she was ok and saw she was posting on a support thread for mners recently out of relationships. I only read one of her posts (didnt want to be too nosey!) but she seemed to be doing really well.

Ds2 barely slept at all on weds night, couldnt understand why and then he felt really hot yesterday eve and had an underarm temp of 39C so I think he must have picked up a virus. He's very sleepy and grumpy today still so muat be feeling really poorly. He also fell off the bed and bit his tongue last night which didnt help (bad mum)!

Dottydoodoo · 16/09/2016 17:23

Trinpy sending your DS get well soon wishes, poor little thing. You're not a bad mum at all! These things happen.

Me we had a lovely time at swimming, thank you! DS was a bit unsure at first and his teeth were bothering him, but he was moving his legs around towards the end and seemed to enjoy himself. He had an hour and a half nap afterwards too which is unusual for him. I think swimming might be our new favourite activity! We were going to do waterbabies but it's so expensive. The pool we went to today does baby lessons which are £4.00 a time, and you just turn up. I think we might give those a go.

I'm off to go and start DS dinner, he has got trio of root veg for tonight yum yum!

DomesticAnarchist · 17/09/2016 08:23

Morning all, happy Saturday!

So DS2 is 24 weeks (and was over a week overdue), sitting unaided and shoving everything in his mouth. I think we might start trying a little food this weekend.

Any suggestions? I know I did this with DS1 but I can't remember any of it! We did militant BLW with him but I don't think it conferred any of the supposed benefits - he still went through a major fussy period from 2-4 years (still quite fussy!). So I'm feeling a bit more pragmatic this time.

Oh, I've just realised how much earlier I'm going to have to get up to do baby breakfast! Confused Maybe we'll start with just lunches...!

sherazade · 17/09/2016 08:44

indom i keep weaning really simple not because I'm lazy and take it really really slowly and it tends to work.
They have what I have when I have it. No steaming broccoli spears or freezing purees. I use a really handy food masher that I bought for 5 pounds from Amazon (or even just a fork but this works well ) and mash up whatever we are having .

www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=annabel+karmel+masher&tag=hydrukspg-21&index=aps&hvadid=37296205103&hvpos=1t1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7276932436071957257&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046640&hvtargid=kwd-19319661886&ref=pd_sl_729tlhlj6m_e

Sometimes they take a few spoons and sometimes they take nothing . No special baby breakfasts either . I'm sure lots of people would judge me for this as they think babies should be on three solid meals and sleep through blah blah but mine were mostly on milk for a year . In fact dd2 was exclusively breastfed till her first birthday as she had no interest in food and it wasn't a problem - she went straight on to an adult diet and is the least fussiest eater I know with an adventurous palate . I'm glad I ignored all the nay Sayers ! So taking it easy and slow works for me especially when you have a hectic life already.

Swearwolf · 17/09/2016 08:59

dom I tend to take the approach that if it's something she can easily pick up and put in her mouth then I'll give it to her, if it's something I'd need a spoon for then I'll spoon feed her. I only started last week and have started with just veg, some mashed and some whole each time. Added a bit of apple from an Ella's pouch into some mashed veg yesterday and she loved it.

OP posts:
FirstTimeMummy25 · 17/09/2016 09:12

Good luck with weaning Dom we are still on just an evening meal for DS. We are purreeing here tho.
Is there such a thing as a 6 month sleep regression, DS is 28 weeks and sleep has just gone seriously down hill! I generally take him upstairs between 7-7:30 feed him this used to send him to sleep, now as soon as I put him in cot he wakes up and as soon as I leave the room he starts hysterically crying, I've been doing control crying with him which worked last night after about 45 mins but other nights hasn't. He then goes to sleep and last night for example he woke at 00:20 again crying, fed him and he was awake crying until 3:30 where he fell asleep with me stroking his head then up for the day at 5:45... Anyone else having this ?

TheMshipIsBack · 17/09/2016 09:47

FirstTimeMummy I recently gave up controlled crying with T after almost 3 weeks, as it wasn't working. She had some nights where she'd go in 20-30 minutes, other nights 2+ hours. It just wasn't for her, and some babies are just like that. I've had two nights going back to nursing her to sleep and escaping after she's properly out, and we've all slept much better. I'm re-reading the No Cry Sleep Solution book and making my plan - T's big issue is using the boob as a sleep crutch, and that is one of the main things that book deals with.

Dom Just give DS2 whatever you're having for breakfast. We were doing porridge with a little fruit puree for T, but she refused it most mornings and just tried to grab our toast instead. The rest of us all have a slice of toast and a boiled egg on weekdays, so she gets toast and a piece of fruit. Today as it's Saturday she got to have banana and a pancake.

I was typing this while pumping. I bloody love this Spectra pump. A timer went off randomly in the house (this happens all the time here, DS has a couple that are for countdown timing to help with transitions) and I was able to just pick up the pump and wander over to turn it off. I've only got about 70mL, but fed T about 45 minutes ago so that's pretty good.

Me624 · 17/09/2016 09:56

Dom our lazy mornings have changed since DS started having breakfast too! We used to lounge around in bed until half 8 at least, he'd have a bottle about 9 and then we'd both think about getting dressed. Now I try and get myself dressed around half 7, and it's breakfast at 8 for us both with DS in his pyjamas or vest, as he gets food all over himself so no point getting him dressed beforehand!

DS and I have similar breakfasts, toast and fruit, yoghurt, porridge etc. We have been weaning for around 5 weeks now (DS is nearly 29 weeks, we started at about 23/24 weeks) and he's really increased the amount he's eating and is starting to take less milk from his bottles. But I know lots of other babies like yours sher with very little interest in food!

vroc81 · 17/09/2016 10:06

The masher was in our lidl for 3.99 this week, I was tempted I might have to go back!

mship I'm currently pumping in the passenger seat with the spectra to save time having shipped R off with her grandparents for a few hours..!

We're off on holiday tmrw - anyone got any tips for the flight or when we get there.. My mum says my list should be more than baby, pump, passport...

Trinpy · 17/09/2016 10:14

FTM have you tried doing ssh/pat? I do it with ds2 and it works really well for him. All babies are so different, I don't believe that controlled crying works for all of them.

Indom I think starting with lunch is a good idea. I forgot how messy it gets! Toast is a good one for not making too much mess or porridge that you can spoon feed. I think that all those claims about blw making your dc less fussy are a load of crap. Otoh I'm far too lazy to do spoon feeding! Ds2 had yogurt the other day and I got ds1 to do the spoon feeding bit so I didn't have to Blush.

Dotty swimming is definitely worth it just for the lovely long nap afterwards Smile. But yy to the insane cost of waterbabies. You're lucky that there is a cheaper option near you - where I live even classes at the local pool cost £££. We're probably going to do 1 term and then go back to just splashing around in the local pool whenever we get the chance.

Poor ds2 was really suffering last night. I was up with him from 12-4 then dh took over until 7. I've never known him to cry to loudly or for so long. It sounded like a pig being tortured Shock. Typical that this stuff always happens at the weekend so I can't just bring him into the gp's to get checked over.

Dottydoodoo · 17/09/2016 12:04

Weaning is currently going well here. I am too scared to do blw so DS is having just purées at the moment. Saying that I tried to give him a piece of banana a couple of days ago and he looked at me as if I was trying to hand him an alien, so maybe he's not ready for that yet! DS is just on fruit and veg purées until tomorrow when he is six months old and then we will give him more of our things. He loves his food, it's so cute to watch! He grabbed hold of the spoon this morning before I realised and food went everywhere! He didn't seem interested in the actual food though! I think I might start giving him his own spoon to play with.

Talking of blw what finger foods does everyone give their little ones? I'm so scared of him choking but I don't want to hold him back from experimenting with his food. I find this whole weaning business such a minefield!

TheMshipIsBack · 17/09/2016 13:57

dotty As finger foods, T has had: cucumber, sweet pepper, cut grapes, apple, pear, melon, roast parsnips, roast squash, rusks, toast, bagel, crumpet, cream cheese spread on bread or toast, peanut butter, salmon, scrambled eggs, roast chicken. Probably some other stuff that I'm forgetting. She's 28 weeks Monday. The nicest bits to start with are things that hold their shape well, aren't too slippery, and are soft enough for baby to mash with their gums. The roast parsnip spears were a huge hit because they were easy to pick up and hold.

1frenchfoodie · 17/09/2016 15:00

Cloth nappy users Aldi has Bambino Mio one size fits all nappies for £7.99 in their baby event starting from 22/9 and you can pre order for free delivery (not sure of amount you need to spend but 6 nappies enough to get it here). I've got away with not buying a single reusable so far as my sis gave me loads but she switched to reusables at 7 months or so and only 1/3 of the stash I inherited are one size fits all. Quite excited about the cute patterns and means her nursery can just get used to one fastening type not the 4-5 different ones we use.
