Hello

I know it's not even February yet, but here is the new thread. Even though Jacob was born in January, I feel he is an honorary Febster!!!

Looking forward to more new bubs coming this way!!!

SmudgeMum · 29/04/2007 11:30

Morning all, just to add in that I've got another that won't sleep if anything is going on during the day. he gets really tired but is just too nosey!! If we go out in the pushchair or car he does tend to sleep though. I would agree with the rest of you though, it's a small thing to grizzle about when he sleeps through the night (and he seemed to be doing that from when he was about 12lb). I wouldn't swap that for the world. Saying that, I woke him by mistake last night at 11pm and thought I'd try giving a feed and see if that meant he slept later than 5.30. The short answer was no!!! He did then go back to sleep and not wake til 8.30 though!!!!
Any of you joining in Mile for Maude walks on May 12th?

Bienchen · 29/04/2007 22:22

Congrats Peachy - excellent news on the exchange.

DD is another one that often does two or three cat naps during the day for a few minutes. On some days however she has two long sleeps (3 or 4 hours). Unfortunately no pattern here...

Disagree on the weight/sleeping through issue. She has been sleeping for between 6 and 7.5 hours a nights since 7 weeks and she only weighed 9 lb 2 oz at 9 weeks. If colic is not on the agenda, then she usually settles with a little help within half an hour in the evening, sometimes much more quickly than that. I have also started to give her a bit of formula just before bedtime as I could not cope with the neverending feeding marathon and DD got very wriggly and frustrated. No more tears at bedtime now and that must be good for something even if I am not totally happy with solution.

We'll have to get some new bigger clothes first but I'll have a rummage first to see what we were given after she was born as some people thoughtfully gave us 3-6 month clothes. Also, we will be in Germany and France soon, so may get some clothes there.

Anyone else bringing up their LO bilingual?

snugglebumnappies · 30/04/2007 09:36

Peachy, got everything crossed that it will work out well with the house move

I need HELP with bottles and brestfeeding. DS2 is a fantastic feeder, he has been soley breastfed and has piled on the weight, I am intending to feed him for as long as possible and hoping he will take quickly to a cup like DD (she was 4 months) however DD has started back at her swimming lesons on a Sat and I have to leave DS2 with DH as he isn't the sort of baby that will sit quietly in his car seat by the side of the pool ! Anyway DH and MIL have tried him with a bottle (an avent type one) with EBM for two Saturdays now and he won't entertain it, starts gagging etc. Did show DH how to cup feed and he did have a go but isn't very confident and when DS2 gulped a bit too much and started to cough DH paniced and is now refusing to cup feed him again! DS2 is now 8 weeks old, anyone any suggestions re types of bottle? Has anyone tried a brestbottle just worried it may be an expensive mistake

peachygirl · 30/04/2007 11:12

Hi everyone thanks for congrats about the house I'm still feeling a bit wary about it all but at last we have no more phonecalls from the estate agents!
Snugglebum the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles are very good. They are supposed to mimic breast movement and are much cheaper (about £6 for 2) we have been using these from quite early on and when I can get my act together to express!! DD sswap between these and breast no problem. They have been recommeneded on other threads.
Sadly no bilingualism hre bienchen but I will be doing lots of baby signing as I'm a makaton tutor

suzi2 · 30/04/2007 18:52

I'm having the same trouble snugglebum! We have tried the old style TT ones and the closer to nature, both refused and gagged on teat. Dummies are also gagged on. She has only taken a bottle once at about 5 wks. I'm reluctant to spend loads on teats as I reckon I'll cup feed if necessary - DS took to a doidy quickly. I spoke to a HV today at our local bf group and she suggested trying latex teats as some bf babies take to the better. In her experience the NUK ones are often preferred by bf babies - I'll be out to ASDA to get some so I'll let you know how it goes.

suzi2 · 30/04/2007 18:56

Nice to hear there are other wakeful babies on here. Last night DD finally gave in about 9pm, slept until 11pm, up for an hour, slept until 4am up for 90 mins, woke at 8:30 when DS shouted for her. Since then she has taken 3, 20min catnaps in the car/on DHs knee. A fairly typical day for us. She's nodded off feeding just now so I daren't move.

SmudgeMum · 30/04/2007 20:31

Evening. DS had a screaming, kicking feeding frenzy this evening. He kept wanting to feed but then pushing me away next minute - any ideas? DH took him and gave him a bath and he calmed down and had a final feed before bed so I don't know what it was all about
Bienchen we are trying to bring up DS with Dutch and English. DH Mum is Dutch and that's what they always spoke at home so in a way it's his first language. At the mo, DH is talking to DS in Dutch and I am doing English. How about you?
Next lot of jabs tomorrow - Calpol from a spoon or syringe?
Fingers still crossed for your house Peachy - is it a case of no news is good news or do you want to hear from the estate engine.

suzi2 · 30/04/2007 20:44

syringe definately! DD loved the calpol after her jabs a little odd lol

babydrivertoo · 30/04/2007 22:05

smudgemum, we get the same thing too sometimes. Don't know what it's about, but like yours, taking a break and coming back later seems to help. Seems to be a combination of tiredness, overhungriness, lack of milk from me, wind... I find sometimes that putting my hand under his top leg, cupping his upper thigh/knee and then rotating his leg gently helps. Might be that it moves wind along, or maybe it's just soothing.

on bfing and bottles, we use the TT ones. I use the size 2 teats so the flow is quite fast so DS doesn't get frustrated. I've a friend who swears by Nuk. Alternatively, Boots used to do (3yrs ago) a bottle to cup trainer system which had a softer spout than a drinking cup, which DS1 took to quite well at around 4.5mos. Don't know if Boots still do them, but saw something similar in Sainsbury's recently.

DS2 does seem to do OK on daytime naps, but it is much more tricky to manage with DS1 around. Have people tried having the radio on? I often have Radio 4 on in the house anyway (sorry, saddo that I am) so have taken to leaving it on quietly during the day in the room when DS is sleeping - helps to mask some of the crashing and banging going on elsewhere, and gets him used to sleeping with noise.

suzi2 · 30/04/2007 22:31

That's interesting about the radio babydriver. The few times that DD has self settled into a decent nap in the morning (she's caught me by surprise just nodding off in the bouncy) DS has put on 'his' mp3 player and speakers playing gorillaz very loud right next to her. Maybe that's what we need. I know white noise works for her as her slumber bear workds but it switches off after a few minutes. Might give that a go again tomorrow.

peachygirl · 01/05/2007 10:14

Syringe for calpol for us too. I bought one in boots for 75p
We often put the radio on to try to settle Maya at night. we have a timer setting where it will go off after 15 /30/ 1hr so we set it for 15 mins and in theory if she hasn't stopped wimpering by the time it goes off we get her. Usually it's earlier than this. We would put it on rado four or seven

babydrivertoo · 01/05/2007 22:28

aggghhh, Evan has chickenpox spots!!! They've just started to appear this afternoon so if he's anything like his bro, tomorrow and Thurs he'll be increasingly grumpy and Friday will be hell. And we'll have to be in quarantine over most of the bank holiday I expect. Oh, and it also means I have to miss the NHS postnatal classes that I was meant to be starting tomorrow - I was looking forward to meeting some other mums and doing the resuscitation bit of the course.

Better log off now and try and get some kip to prepare...

SmudgeMum · 01/05/2007 22:39

Oh no, that's not good news babydrivertoo. I hope it's not too bad and that littledriver soon recovers (and doesn't keep you up too much)
DS feeling a bit sorry for himself but ok after jabs. i went with the syringe (thanks to the voters!) and he took it much better than last time. I think it was because I aimed the syringe a bit better this time and somneone had told me to lie him down and have his head back so he has no choice but to swallow. he's asleep now so I hope it stays that way.
I think general noise seems to settle DS. Luckily we live on a really busy road so there's constant swooshing sound - a bit more urban than whale noises!!

andyrobo237 · 02/05/2007 10:25

We have a catnapper here as well - he is sitting next to me shouting (prob get off that computer mum and entertain me!). He has had a 20 min sleep since 8am this morning - woken by the phone ringing. I also use a syringe for calpol and also to give Infacol- is easier touse - but my pharmacy gave it to me for free!

Off for a long walk today (if the PO come to collect a parcel for delivery - may jsut leave it in the porch with a note!) as the sun is shining!

DontCallMeYummy · 02/05/2007 11:49

Tip for happy babies when having those nasty injections - if you breastfeed them during the injection the milk and suckling acts as an analgesic and they don't feel the pain. Honest! It's the only thing that kept Don'tCallMyMummyYummy calm during his daily pincushion session when he was in the Neonatal Unit.

suzi2 · 02/05/2007 19:14

good tip dontcallmeyummy... but not wise when they have teeth apparently I fed DD straight after, I can't hold her for the jabs as I have a tremor which is worse when holding things tight and there would have been too much movement. I don't feel too guilty either as it wasn't nasty mummy who did it lol.

peachygirl · 02/05/2007 20:12

Hi all sorry to hear about the CP spots baby drive but at least he will get them over and done with early in his life.. Good to hear about so many cat napping babies lets hope it's a developmental phase!!!

suis · 03/05/2007 02:49

I'm hoping the catnapping is a phase too ! Sandy just won't sleep in the daytime unless he's in the car or a moving pram. Mind you I wonldn't swap all the daytime naps in the world for the 7+ hours a night we are getting at pres (touch lots of wood).

Quick mention for Ja9 & HairyCaterpillar( the Stirling girls ) ... Figleaf is organising another meetup at the macBob for next Thursday morning if you are up for it.. there's a thread on the meetups board.

marmitemad · 03/05/2007 22:38

Hi everyone,
Haven't been on for a while as the window installers managed to break our phone connection last week (and BT are charging £120 call out + £98 labour per hour for the repair!!)
I am feeling much better now (emotions and arthritis) although I'm still feeling quite sad about giving up BF.
Nights are still going well, (sorry )we have started putting DD to bed awake at around 7pm (first few nights were difficult but now she seems happy to go to sleep by herself)and then doing a dreamfeed at around 10:30/11pm and she wakes around 7-8am.
We don't seem to have any real routine though as it all depends on what time she wakes in the morning - I couldn't bear to get up until she wakes up by herself. what do others think about routine?
We had our first Waterbabies swimming class today, DD seemed to like it, she looked very surprised most of the time and couldn't stop staring at the other babies. She didn't seem to mind being splashed but cried a little after the underwater bit.
I am also feeling happy as I finally managed to order my replacement engagement ring this afternoon, just need to be organised enough to do the wedding ring now.

SmudgeMum · 04/05/2007 10:38

DCMY - I have BF DS after both lots of injections but hadn't thought of doing it during injection. Our nurses do both legs at the same time so I'm not sure I would be able to position him. I might ask them what they reckon? Hi Marmitemad, glad things generally going ok but at your window installers. I hope you are claiming it back somehow!! You must be very sick of having to sort things out but well done for the engagement ring.
DS does the same as your DD whenever we go anywhere, he just stares at people. Can be quite disconcerting I think! Sounds like your nights are good. Ours were similar although dream feed didn't seem to make much difference so DS was going to bed about 7.30 and waking at about 5.30/6 for a feed before sleeping again til about 7.30/8. He did wake in the night but managed to settle himself. Last night was awful though and he woke about 5 times!! I don't know if he is having a growth spurt or if it was because he was in just his cot for the first time (had been in Moses basket in cot). DH went in to settle him one time, he settled himself another 2 times but I fed him at 3 and then 5.30. I might try waking him for a dream feed tonight and seeing if he then sleeps better

andyrobo237 · 04/05/2007 20:06

Well I nearly fell out of bed last night - T didnt wake for a botle until 4.25am! He had his last one at 8pm and went straight to sleep - wow!! Not expecting the same tonight though - but I can hope! He is actually upstairs in his bed now and hopefully will stay there!

He has been a happy little chappy today - went to see a friend yesterday and came back with a bag of clothes for him - half are unused!

Bienchen · 04/05/2007 20:48

Hi everyone, doesn't time fly? Cannot believe that DD is 10 weeks now! We actually bump into Mums with much smaller babies now . Cannot explain this but the last three Wed nights have been absolute hell with DD not settling until about 1:30am!! On all three occasions I ended up on the sofabed in the lounge as DP needs to get up at 4:15, so can't cope with a really short night. Most other nights she goes to sleep about 9pm ish and is asleep by 10pm latest. I was knackered every Thursday...

Otherwise she is doing fine and we are getting some smiles now. She also enjoys rolling/wriggling around when placed on the ground and looks like she might be able to flip herself on her tummy soon. I bet she won't talk until she is 2 to make up for it!!

Went to John Lewis today and ordered mattress for cot which will be delivered after our holiday; DD will be too big for the moses basket soon and I hope she'll enjoy the extra space! I also bought sheets for her there, as I loved the ones I bought for the moses basket. Does that make me a snob?

To make up for the few bad nights, I found out this week that I passed the exam I sat the day before I went into labour, so very pleased. Just need to find time now to study for second exam due end of June .

Is anyone having a naming/christening ceremony?

babydrivertoo · 04/05/2007 20:58

Just popping in. Well done with your exam Bienchen.

LO seems to be coping pretty well with the pox thankfully. Bit unsettled today, and clearly itchy at times as he keeps trying to rub his head and face on me, his feeding pillow, bouncy chair... But at other times he's been smiling away, even giggling a few times, so can't be all bad.

Wish we could get a full night after a dream feed, like marmitemad's LO. Mine still seems to want to wake at 3.30am for a top up. Once he's feeling a bit better I'll try to settle him without and see what happens.

Enjoy the weekend folks.

thelittlestboho · 04/05/2007 23:42

That is very strange Bienchen, maybe she likes to watch ER and doesn't appreciate the early night, lol. Noa's an absolute joy, she's sleeping all night now from whenever she has her bath and last feed, generally about 8.30. In fact, most mornings she's last up! Yesterday she laughed out loud at her dad and sister, I missed it as I was confined to bed all day, due to poisoning myself with 4 SMALL glasses of wine, (over period of 7hrs, I hasten to add!!)at a friend's BBQ. I guess after nearly a year sober, the body decided to rebel. I had to be super-cautious about feeding her, as I was para she'd end up drunk herself, haha.Thank goodness for my supply in the freezer. Is anyone else noticing how chilled their baby is becoming with age? It's the prize at the end of the screaming/feeding/unsettling of the first couple of months I reckon.

MoosMa · 05/05/2007 07:52

Haven't posted for a while but have been lurking and reading everyone else's. We've been a bit busy, we were looking at a house down the road and trying to afford it but they turned down our offer so now we're looking at extending our house. Also I shut my finger in a door a few days ago and it's still v painful so typing properly is difficult!

DD2 is doing well, she's a greeedy pig, having up to 36 ozs a day! She's going 12 hours between feeds some nights though so it must be doing her some good Her reflux isn't too bad now either, she's hardly ever sick and seems happy (although she did throw up on me this morning, but I think that was just wind). She doesn't sleep much in the day but after 11 hours at night, maybe she just isn't tired?

DD1 is still nice with her too, I think she's got used to the fact that she's here to stay. Her talking is coming on leaps and bounds and mostly features DD2 - "Habbie nose, beep!" "Night night Habbie, snore noise"
