Hello

I know it's not even February yet, but here is the new thread. Even though Jacob was born in January, I feel he is an honorary Febster!!!

Looking forward to more new bubs coming this way!!!

MoosMa · 01/02/2007 17:19

How's Jacob Plumpbump, do you know when you'll be bringing him home yet?

babydrivertoo · 08/02/2007 17:33

hi folks. hoping to see this thread fill up soon. moosma, there's news from plumpbump on the ante-natal thread - Jacob is now home which is great.

SmudgeMum · 09/02/2007 09:27

Hi All. Feels good to be doing first posting here. I'm sure this thread will soon become as quick moving as the antenatal thread. LO all good. Our first night home was tough as he wanted to feed all the time so didn't get to sleep until 4am. We had a great first day at home yesterday though- even went out to Asda shopping and had a drink in the cafe. I was quite proud because I fed him in the cafe (wasn't sure how I'd feel) Last night was much better so ready for another day. We might go outside for a snowy adventure!
Hope everyone else is doing ok. Isn't it strange how it takes all day just to do the little things like have a shower and eat!

SmudgeMum · 11/02/2007 12:04

I'm hoping you're all busy having lots of cuddles with your LO. I just wanted to whoop and yell that DS slept brilliantly last night - 3 lots of nearly 3 hours!! Don't know what we/he did right but boy do I hope it continues!

bubblebell1 · 11/02/2007 19:28

hi everyone its very quiet here.

still tryin to juggle recovery from cs and 2 ds'

hope everyone is ok and enjoying their new bundles of joy.

SmudgeMum · 12/02/2007 09:30

Hi Bubblebell [Smudgemum waves enthusiastically] Take your time recovering although I guess easier said than done with 2 DS.

bubblebell1 · 12/02/2007 10:34

just wondered if any of you had thought about what to wear on top when breast feeding.

at the mo i am still in a nighty most days so no prob but next week i will have to start venturing out and have no idea whatto wear. do ppl mind u feeding in public?

are there any specialist shops?

sorry to sound so daft. lol

suzi2 · 12/02/2007 21:34

Hello all :-D

Breastfeeding tops - don't get anything special they're more bother than they're worth IMO. Just wear a reasonably loose fitting top and pull it up. If you're worried about your sides/belly being on show or cold, try wearing a vest top underneath that you can pull down too. Or try a belly band (like the ones for pg ladies). Or a cardi hides a lot.

I fed DS in public for almost a year and never had a negative comment. I have huge boobs and wasn't always as discreet as other people are. I had a few positive comments too which was lovely. It's a big hurdle to do the first feed, but once you get into it it's easy.

SmudgeMum · 13/02/2007 08:54

Hi Bubblebell and Suzi. I'm a newbie to this too Bubblebell and have one BF top that I bought and wore when pregnant and it's lovely but not very practical as it doesn't open enough for me to see what I'm doing (still need to keep a close eye or we don't get the latching right). I've just worn maternity tops and hitched them up. I fed DS on our first outing in an Asda cafe and it went well. I wasn't going to but it was really quiet in there and just decided to give it a go. Noone batted an eyelid and I'm usually a shy person so just go for it. I found having a muslin to sort of drape over me was good too.

sorkycake · 13/02/2007 19:45

Yoohoo!

Well we are feeding voraciously here and have had the first 3 nights of awful sleeplessness. He has started to settle a bit more and we got one 2hr sleep and one three hour sleep. I have had the latching problem as well and have just got over the cracked nipples. It doesn't seem to matter that I've had 2 kids that fed well with no problems really, I think it's like to riding a bike for the first time again. I second the normal clothing suggestion simply beause when your figure returns, which it will I promise, you will want to wear nice clothes again, not feeding tops. Muslin squares are a good buy if you do feel conscious, but I have worn vest tops before with a jacket or cardi and just undo as much as you need. I've never had anyone bat an eyelid but then I suppose I've never really whipped 'em out in public. Plus I'm quite small anyway, maybe it's different if you're generously norked LOL.
I've recovered very well from the birth I'm pleased to say, unlike my other two but my God were the after pains excruciating! Worse than labour for definite.

suzi2 · 13/02/2007 20:26

Well, young Isla decided that she would like to feed/suckle all night. Got 2 hours sleep in the end - so have had about 5 hours since Saturday! And the wee monkey has fed very little during the day and slept loads. Just awaiting another pooey nappy... I'm sure she has to have another soon! I knew I would find SOMETHING to stress about lol.

My nipples are still intact. I agree that previous experience doesn't necessarily help. I think it somewhat helps that I only stopped feeding DS 6 months ago. And also trained as a bf peer counsellor so have all the theory fairly fresh in my mind. Still have to be extra vigilant for a half decent latch though. They have such small mouths eh?

Sorky - agree about the afterpains. Mine are horrific. I had some with DS and thought they were bad but boy, these are definately worse than labour! Still contemplating going for a poo... still scared... still wincing every time I pee too. I can't imagine what these bodily functions must be like with stitches. I can't believe that I can handle labour & birth but not going for a pee lol.

SmudgeMum · 14/02/2007 07:31

Morning all. We had a good night last night (night before was not so good with him screaming from about 11.30-2.30) We seem to manage 2-3 hours between feeds. Hope you had a better night Suzi2 - it is early days isn't it? Listen to me sounding like I know anything! What I meant was although DS has slept well apart from first night home, we were in hospital 2 nights and I wasn't even counting them! My after pains weren't too bad but I think that's cos it's my first. My nether regions are aching like hell though. If I stand up for too long they feel like they are going to drop out. Peeing isn't too bad (and I did have stiches Suzi) but that might be because I am drinking about 3 gallons of water a day. I've got bottles of water all over the house and DH keeps topping them up. Sorkycake what did you put on your nips to get them to heal? Mine seem to ache a bit after he's fed but the cracking and grazing seems to have healed.

bubblebell1 · 14/02/2007 12:37

hello everyone!

am glad everything is goin well.

i have an infection in my wound and harvey has stickey eyes. other than that he is an angel and i dont wish to say incase i 1)jinx it or 2)make you extreamly jealous but he sleeps for 5 hours a night.

maybe because he is such a porker 10lb 1oz i can fill him up more but its been a joy this time especially as i have enough energy to function relativly normally.

thanks for the advice on bf tops. i worry coz my boobs are big i have to check his nose is free and make sure he is latched on.

its strange for me ive gone from being a regular mnetter to grabbin 5 mins when i can. i hope you all stay happy and can keep up with you all.

sorkycake · 14/02/2007 21:21

Well I do swear by Camillosan (?sp) I have to say, just for soothing immediately after the feed if it's not gone exactly as planned, but tbh it's positioning that's the key and unless that's right then it doesn't really matter what you put on them they'll always be sore. So I've found. This time I've expressed a little milk from the other side and coated the sore area too which has helped as well.
Today has gone much better on the feeding front simply because I've nailed the positioning. The sore nips were gone by the third feed!
We managed 3 hours, then 2 hours then 3 hours last night and boy could I tell I'd had some sleep. He's pooing copiously and the washing has trebled at least. Everything has poo/wee/sick on atm LOL.
Kids are adjusting pretty well, though my 3yo ds is less than NOT interested in the baby and regressing slightly.
M/w came today and weighed 'chunky rice' he's gained 1.5oz in 5 days, which I didn't think was much but m/w said she expected him lose weight this week!
Keep waiting for blues but they haven't come yet (touch wood). Hopefully the stressful nights feeds on Sunday, where Dh n I both could've cried and he would have gone to Asda to get formula if it wasn't for Sunday trading, was the low point. Either that or it comes and goes when I'm asleep for the 3 hours I maybe granted .
Bless your sore bits! Now I wonder who else will be joining us soon?

babydrivertoo · 14/02/2007 22:05

hi there. feels funny to be on this thread still - and you can definitely see that we're all much more busy with our newbies - can't believe I haven't logged on for nearly a week!

bfing going OK - was a bit sore to start with but have been really strict with myself and DS2 about positioning so haven't progressed to cracked nips like I did with DS1 so far. sorky another solution if you're still sore is to use nipple shields which let your nips heal up for a few feeds before going back au naturel - they were magic for me last time.

Anyway, time to get ready for bed and hopefully not too many wake up sessions in the night.

suzi2 · 15/02/2007 02:15

Progress... DD went down from 11-12 giving me a whole hours sleep! Still trying to get her back down though.

Agree with the positioning thing. I have sore nips in the morning as I'm being lazy with the night feed positioning. So far no damage though.

Discovered I have piles . I could have sworn my rectum went inside out when pushing and I was right. Anyway, more itchy than anything. Any advice?

SmudgeMum · 15/02/2007 07:42

Morning. Hope you managed to get DD settled Suzi2. Anyone who had a bad night, don't read the next bit! I don't know what we did yesterday but DS was a star last night. He fed at 10, 1, 5, and 7 and slept the whole time in between and went straight into his moses basket after each feed. I think we've been blessed but I'm not naive enough to think it will last. Bubblebell I hope your wound heals up soon - are you on antibiotics? Got MW coming for last visit today She's lovely and I'm not so sure about the health visitor. DS was back to his birthweight after 6 days so I have no idea how much he'll be now. Suzi2 I too have 'a pile' and my rectum definitely went inside out (and therefore had to be sewn back in - sorry TMI!) Don't think it's itchy yet but could be that the itch isn't noticeable through the aching yet. Enjoy your LO - anyone doing anything exciting? We're going to register his birth today so he will officially exist

suzi2 · 15/02/2007 09:47

She didn't settle... well not when not being cuddled. Early days I suppose. She's still lying on my knee asleep. A cuddly wee thing. Bought her a dummy yesterday which helps DH settle her a bit. She took to it instantly. With DS we had to coax him a fair bit.

bubblebell1 · 15/02/2007 14:56

sorry about the sore nipples.

i had blisters the first few days but have gritted my teeth and everything seems to be ok.

i wondered if me taking antibiotics would give lo oral thrush or would i get it on my nipples?

also just wondering, when i had ds1 i bottle fed straight away. breast feeding wasnt promoted at all and hospital provided formula. this time to even mention bottle feeding is a sin and am wondering if any of you ladies are brave enough to not actually breast feed. my lo has 1 bottle a day aswell as breast but when my nipples felt like they were goin to fall off i really wanted to bottle feed. the midwives didnt empathise and made me feel sooo guilty.

he is still 10lb so only lost an ounce. wonder what he will weigh tomorrow he has been a lil off colour.

SmudgeMum · 15/02/2007 18:45

Hi there,
Suzi2 - cuddles are nice but sometimes you just want a bit of space don't you. Have you managed to go out yet? I wondered if DD would settle in car or pram and give you some time to sleep? We tried a dummy on our first night home from hospital after Ds had screamed for hours but he so wasn't interested. Bubblebell I think there can be a lot of pressure to breastfeed. I think I've been lucky that everyone I have spoken to has tried to give a balanced view and not rammed breastfeeding down people's throats. I wanted to give it a go and luckily it is going ok so far but you need to do what you feel happy with. What you def don't need is anyone piling on any guilt.
Talking about feeding, we went to register DS birth today and ended up feeding in the room - the poor council clerk bloke who was probably about 60 was ever so nice but didn't know where to look. He suggested that DH might be best signing the register because, well, um, it might be easier as you are, well, um. PMSL
