Hi all. Nice to hear everyone is feeling a bit brighter. Loved the 'liver' stories!!

I'm feeling much better this last couple of days since I started ignoring the mw advice. I felt they weren't helping me in the constant feeding / sore nips / not being able to settle issues, so opened the Baby Whisperer book, and I don't know if it's coincidence, but since I started doing that, the lo has slept which has given my boobs a rest so they feel better, so I feel better

The mw on Monday told me to 'be positive', and 'look upon bf as your new job, 24 hrs a day' - that was her sage advice to my queries. Helful huh!

My lo is still little though - four weeks old + and only just back over her birth weight. The last fortnight she's oput on 11lbs though so prob shouldn't be too concerned.

Happy vibes to you all!

Hattie2 · 31/01/2007 10:37

Trixy - he's gorgeous, what fab hair

saltcod · 31/01/2007 11:31

How do I access the profiles now? It used to be under the "Mumsnet Stuff" section, but isn't there anymore

DS had a record feeding session yesterday - he was awake from 3 - 10pm with only a couple of 2 minute (yep!) naps. And he feed for 80% of that time . Is this another growth spurt (5.5 weeks) d'ya think?! Luckily he slept for 2 x 3 hour sessions at night or I'd be climbing the walls!

Hattie2 · 31/01/2007 14:30

saltcod - just click on the person's name above the post to see their profile if they have created one.

wilkie50 · 31/01/2007 16:32

Oonaghbhuna - something else for me to worry about!! Did you have any other symptoms of womb infection??? Still having a bit of bright red bleeding but only trickles, no more liver (there could be a nice joint of beef up there for Sunday lunch??) Spoke to MW on day it happened and she said as long as there was no odour, the bleedig wasn't filling a pad and there was no pain I should put it down to one of those things.

Hattie - I know what you mean about MN - fab isn't it.

Laughalot - thanks, I do feel better although having mum here is a massive help!!

Glad to hear everone else doing well

saltcod · 31/01/2007 18:06

thanks Hattie And gorgeous little boy Trixy..... I love babies with lots of hair!

OonaghBhuna · 31/01/2007 18:41

wilkie, glad you got it checked out, didnt mean to woryy you I had period type cramps aswell and my loss was very inconsistant virtually nothin for days and then a big gush of blood.
we had to get colief for dd2 as the past week has been horrendous with the lack of sleep she seems more settled today so fingers crossed that she will be more settled for tonight. We are suffering from colds which makes things even harder.
I have the baby whisperer book aswell I think it is a good book with practical and sensible advice.

RGee · 01/02/2007 10:36

morning all. how are we today?
i tried expressing this morning and only a pitiful amount came out which didnt even cover the bottom of the bottle. i guess it's another of those things you need to persevere with.

ok - it' time to update th mp3 player. any advance on:

shout - lulu
children - robert miles
heaven knows i'm miserable now - the smiths
cry me a river - justin timberlake
7 tears - goombay dance band
stop your sobbing - the kinks
dry your eyes - the streets
crying - roy orbison
anything by mamas and the papas.....

theUrbanDryad · 01/02/2007 11:10

trixy - he's gorgeous! such a lot of hair! i put a load of pics on my profile got a bit carried away!

can i ask how long you guys spend on winding? i spend ten minutes at night trying to get wind up, and he still doesn't burp! then he gets tummy ache any thoughts?

OP posts:
ellieandhattie · 01/02/2007 11:46

UD Hattie can take up to 20 mins to wind (she is bottle fed) have to sit her up cupping her face and cup her face and rub/pat back then she goes over the shoulder and has a bit of a jiggle. Really annoying as Ellie was a great winder sat her up and she burped instantly. If I don't get Hatties wind up she just does a huge burp laying down and chucks up everywhere!!

Loved your pics Zac looks so tiny, i've put a few on my profile but got a few new ones today so I'll ty and upload more on there later

Dragonhart · 01/02/2007 13:06

Hope everone is ok. I have the inlaws here as still not supposed to lift ds after the section. So not much chance to use the internet.

Ruth had afeed last night at 9 then came to bed with us at 1030. Put her in her crib and then went to sleep and woke in a panick at 630am as she hadnt woken up in the night! Woke her up to feed her, know I shpould be happy but just really scared me. Is it normal for a 6lbs baby to go for 9 hours between feeds? DS would sleep well but he was much heavier and must have had a bigger tummy. She didnt even really have a massive feed at 630, only one side and she fell asleep again. Worried she might be sick. Doesnt seem sick.

God, I seem to be getting even more stressed this time than with ds1!! Just ignore my witterings! DH said I should be glad of the sleep and that I should make the most of it as it prob wont happen again!

Rgee- I have a pretty painful let down too, and both my lo have had a strong suck so first few seconds are/were a bit painful. Last time my midwife sugested that too much caffine can make it worse so had decaff tea and coffee and it seemed to help.

coffeebeanz · 01/02/2007 13:24

RGee I know what you mean about the expressing lark. When LO was in SCBU I wanted to feed him so persevered with the expressing. For the first few days I could only get tiny quantities like you described every few hours, but after a week I could get 70mls every 3 hours(it took a good 20 minutes thouygh) Happily I have not used my pump since (another waste of money 0

UD, BF babies dont usually get as much wind as FF babies, and boys are supposed to be more prone to it compared to girls (which my limited experience agrees with). My MW suggested placing them on your shoulder so they are as stretched out as possible. If they are going to burp then they willdo it in 4 minutes (yes, she was that specific) anything else is a waste of effort.

Are you a veggie ? if so it could be something in your diet, although I've never really bought into that, its certainly not made any difference for me. I quite often place LO on his tummy to stretch (....awaiting MN barrage of critisism...) as that often helps.

In a few years time things will be so different and you'll be telling him not to openly burp in public

coffeebeanz · 01/02/2007 13:31

Wow, DH 9hrs is impressive. I cant really comment as 4 hours is my maximum time between feeds at the moment. As long as she appears well, and is feeding well thro the day with lots of wet nappies then all would seem to be OK. Mothers intuition is usually right, but seek mw advice if you are even a tiny bit worried.

theUrbanDryad · 01/02/2007 17:02

DH i dream of that much sleep....Zac's been a really miserable little guy today, really shouting if i put him down even just to go to the loo! he has finally gone down now though so i really should be sleeping instead of MNing but i'm too wired!

i'm not a veggie, i often think i should be, but i can never quite manage it for longer than a few weeks. our diet has been quite poor these past few weeks due to me not doing the cooking and living on pasta ready meals! need to up our fruit and veg content methinks!

well, he has just started yelling again, ho hum.....

Wahooooo! DD is now latching on! She must've been having a bad day last saturday. Still topping up with formula though. Is it tru that your body only makes what your baby needs? I'd be breastfeeding ALL day she isn't full after 2 hours of booby juice!!!

Lizzzombie · 01/02/2007 18:12

Am considering changing my name to ermentrude. i've been feeding all day, cant understand how anyone would cope with twins. So much for sleeping when baby sleeps. What happens if all baby does is eat?! Its my own fault for wanting a fat baby, but oh my goodness! I am knackered!
Was my first day on my own today. Weird isnt it? Looking forward to having the confidence to actually get out and about (once wound - ugh! - has healed up).
Suggestions for mp3 player would be the Baby Einstein Lullabys cd. I have been playing it all day! Seems to lull LO off into dream land for a short while. Obviously he dreams of milkshakes and lattes, for when he wakes up he is hungry...again. Well, I'd be complaining if he wasnt eating, so I am being positive. Big up for fat babies! x

JodieG1 · 01/02/2007 20:25

Personally I think the burping within 4 mins thing is a load of rubbish! There's no evidence to support that at all and I've not found it to be true from my own experience either. I think midwives make things up someetimes lol.

Ethan slept for 3 and a half hours this afternoon and has just had a feed now. Dh is currently giving him a bath so hopefully he'll stay awake for a while now rathan than midnight! He definitely has awake times during the day now, about 3 or 4 times a day usually. One in the morning, one afternoon and then he cluster feeds for a few hours and has another awake time during the evening. A lot of nights he's been awake from about 11-2 which hasn't been fun but we've been having a cycle of feed, wind, change and then start again. Last night was a bit better with it starting off earlier and we got to sleep at about midnight. He tends to sleep until about 3.30am and then feeds, then wakes about 5 and then about 6.30, after that he's awake and we get up. At least I'll have plenty of time to get dd ready for school and ds1 also ready to come with us.

OonaghBhuna · 01/02/2007 22:30

Last week we had a similar routine, feed, wind chage nappy, wind , wind wind and by the time that was all done she needed fed again, i survived on one or two hours sleep. However this week things seem to have settled she is feeding every 2-3 hours and mostly sleeping in between. She is collicky so we have to give her colief which has calmed things down a bit which is just as well cause she was howling from 6pm onwards. Oh gosh its such hard work I know thngs will get easier especially afet 12 weeks, nearly half way there

I am going to try to express I was useless at it with dd1 but apparently it is easier with your second baby......ummmmmmmmm

wilkie50 · 01/02/2007 22:39

Jacob was terrible at winding but am now winding him twice at every feed (he takes 4oz every 3 hours - fat boy!!). BTW, am I the only one formula feeding? Starting to feel a bit guilty now all you lot seem to be BF...

Dragonart - so Ruth slept thru the night. J is playing up tonight so am currently sat in kitchen sterilising a bottle to try him with some cooled boiled water. He is just constantly rooting for food when I know he can't be hungry!!!!

Went to Drs today as am still trickling red blood and they have given me antibiotics in case of infection. She took a swab and then stuck what felt like her arm up my fanjo to see how big my womb was. I nearly hit the bloody roof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, sterlisers done.....

FIL got his triple bypass date today - it's this Sunday. They came round today and he went for a walk with DH and had the 'If anything happens, look after your mum...' talk so poor DH is now worried sick and keeps locking himself in the bathroom. I feel a bit helpless TBH as Jacob is taking up so much of my attention and I feel I need to comfort DH. It never rains but it pours eh????

liath · 02/02/2007 07:47

Hi Jan mums - 2Happy's big sister here.

2Happy had a baby boy earlier this morning. It was an emergency c-section after another OP labour and failed forceps so I imagine she'll be in hospital for a few days, poor thing. I'm heading down tomorrow morning to lend a hand looking after her ds.

Liath xx

laughalot · 02/02/2007 09:31

2 Happy great news send her all our love xxx

Wilkie I am bottle feeding so dont you worry and my dd also has 4oz every 3/4 hrs

Is anyone having trouble settling there lo on a night I seem to feed lauren and then its takes her about 1 and half hours to settle its driving me mad.

looshkin · 02/02/2007 10:02

liath, thanks so much for posting was thinking about 2H through the sleep deprivation. When you see them please give extra special cuddles from us (gemma) and I will ring her when she is home and feels strong enough to chat.

Lizzzombie · 02/02/2007 10:15

ugh - will people with more than one LO please promise me this gets easier?
Tits are on fire this morning from constant feeding during the night. Dipped into the scary book (which we arent aloud to mention) for advice as I couldnt work out why he was STILL hungry after constant feeding yesterday afternoon. It appears there are 3 types of milk held in your boobs, and the third part is what makes them sleepy. Also, if he finishes one boob and is still bobbing around you can start him on the other side. Well, call me a div, but no one told me that.
Am extremely spaced out today, y'know when you can feel your eyes sticking out on stalks from lack of sleep, its like I've gone beyond exhaustion and entered a whole new realm. Health visitor is coming later this morning. What is the difference between a HV and a MW? [ ( x ) ( x ) ] - sore tits emotion!

RGee · 02/02/2007 10:21

Congrats to 2Happy and send her my love. Getting up the morning after my emergency c-section was horrid so am sending her healing vibes.

Wilkie- my mum had a triple by-pass and if it's any consolation, she was like a new woman once she'd recovered from the op. Hope all goes well.

Oonagh - my lo screams for about 6 hours each day and nothing will help her. Not sure it's colic but it is awful - I feel like I'm doing everything I can to comfort her but nothing soothes her, poor mite.

Hope everyone else is happy today

Dragonhart · 02/02/2007 12:30

Congratulations 2happy!! Hope you are back on your feet soon. xxx

Well, Ruth did not sleep through last night, and I know you will all think I am mad but I was pleased! Woke at 3am for a feed.

Can I recomend trying swaddling to people trying to get their lo off to sleep. It works like magic for Ruth and did for DS1. Not sure if it works for all children but it has for both of mine.

Lizz- I got a really good leaflet from the midwife last time about BF, an A4 coloured one. Not sure if it is for all areas but it really helped me last time. It is called "A mothers's Guide to breastfeeding" and I have issue 5 2005. It says on the back
