Hey All,

Congrats Gloria

Has anyone else been invited to have there new DC take part in the Oxford University Study of 'Broader protection against pneumococcal dseas'?

Got a letter this morning, addressed to the parents of baby XXXX. Read through the letter and have to say after reading abuot possible side effects I will be surprised if any parent volunteers thier new baby! Yet they say they expect 600 people to take part!

I know these things have to be tested, but whne you read that possible side effects include seizures etc - err no thanks!

Aargh, day not gone/going well. Glass fell out of top cupboard at 6pm and landed on DS eye socket (bounced off somthing first but I don't know what) so I checked him over and he had no pain to the touch was right in himself etc no bruising no sweling. Felt guilty and horrible. He's had a on and off for the last few weeks and now has a cough. So at 11pm after he was fed he vomited 2 to 3 feet across the living room so I called NHS direct. Will now be getting up every 2 hours to check on him (though they are positive that he is ok as am I) not that I'm going to be able to sleep. The out of hours doc also called us and they also think its nothing to worry about but want us to go to docs tomorrow and get him checked over just in case. I feel like such a crap mother and even though I am positive he is ok I can't help worrying. So if you see me on here in the wee small hours wave hello.

bewilderbeast · 09/01/2007 02:17

that should have been he's had a cold and please ignore the numerous spelling mistakes, burnt my arm on the sterliliser and am a bit sorre therefore crap at typing (nothing to do with post baby brain honest)

wrinklytum · 09/01/2007 02:23

Hi Bewilderbeast.Am awake as dd has ear infection. You ARE NOT a crap mum, just had a bad experience. It is very hard when you have a new baby, the sleep deprivation is crap.Try t get a good nights rest am sure your little one will be fine.

bewilderbeast · 09/01/2007 03:44

still awakw, ds won't sleep, dp dead to world am exhausted just sat her expressing and sobbing

jabberwocky · 09/01/2007 05:04

So sorry you're having a bad night bewilder. When ds1 was quite small he managed to get a gallon jug of water off balance on the dining room table. Just that fast it conked him in the eye andhe had this huge shiner for about a week!

Have found a pacifier that ds2 will take and he's been sucking away. It's 11:00 pm here and he just fell asleep. Will see how long it lasts...

BaileysMilkshake · 09/01/2007 07:11

BWB - poor you, poor DS - sending a hug your way. You are not a crap mum at all! Just a tired one. And as for something falling out of the cupboard how were you supposed to know that would happen?!

Let us know when you have been to the doctors - although as you say all will be well!

Jabber we are looking for a pacifier/dummy for DS. He does like them and they do help him calm down, but he can't keep them in long enough and gets really cross when they fall out, or his little fingers hook them out. We have tried a NUK one which seems huge in his little mouth and he's not realy keen on. And AVENT which is the same as his big sister had and he seems to like these.

Have finally worked out the pattern between DS's feeds (I think). Hungry baby milk can last him between 3-5 hours, where as regular formula is anywhere from 2-3.5 hours. Is quite good realy as I can plan my feeds according to if I need to go out.

Today I have to take him and DD (who seems to be over her sickness) to the Registrar. As I dont drive this means a walk in howling wind and rain, unless it calms down. But by giving a regular baby feed at 6.30, I can feed him again at 9am with hungry baby, then he should be fine while we are out!

Ultimately though we will switch to HB as it means a more satisfied baby, and going 2 hours is not enough time considering it takes 30-45 minutes to feed and wind etc. next week

northernmama · 09/01/2007 08:55

Just finished catching up on posts, wow, lots of news again.

So glad that the news from Mardy is beginning to look more positive - will still keep all my stuff crossed for you guys.

It's 1:50 am here on Tuesday and I can't sleep... unfortunate as my DD2 IS sleeping and so should I...

My mums group is going out to dinner tonight, and I wanted to go too, but got an email from one of them tonight saying that she'd prefer I not bring my baby, as she wants a kid-free night... I cried for 40 minutes, because I desperately want a night out too, but little Kirsten continues to have latching issues, and giving her a bottle has not worked out so well for us. She is a bit of a lazy nurser, and the bottle is so easy that she really doesn't try very hard. I refuse to syringe feed her either - it just takes so long!

So now I get to stay home and cook and clean it up and do all the regular things... boo hoo. I really was offended by this woman... although I never thought about her perspective at all when I RSVP'd. I just assumed that no one would mind, as she's so small, quiet, sleepy...

Thanks for the rant... am hopeful to keep up better. Kirsten has "colic" like symptoms starting up over the last couple of afternoons/evenings. Today, she's vomited with every feed... hope THAT stops soon!

northernmama · 09/01/2007 09:00

Started DD2 on Infacol tonight, as she had been screaming off and on for a few hours. Very gassy. All my kids had this trouble, so I'm not too paranoid about it. My son had terrible problems with dairy and soy allergies and I had to eliminate all from my diet to BF him, but I remember what he was like and DD2 is not behaving like that, thank goodness.

Plus, I have been eating my weight in chocolate... I could eat chocolate all day and night... I HAVE been eating it day and night!! Just cut down yesterday as it suddenly occurred to me that the chocolate might be making the colic worse...

baby brained...

jabberwocky · 09/01/2007 09:16

baileys, very of your scheduling ability (but not the proposed walk in the rain!) We're getting a little closer to a schedule here. Morning naps are fairly consistent. Of course he still sleeps most of the time - during the day at least...I took ds1 back to gymnastics class yesterday for the first time since beginning of my 2nd trimester. ds2 slept the whole time and I got to chat with a good friend whose son is in the class. It felt really normal

Northern, I think it's awful that you got an email like that. I'm guessing this mother has no clue what it's like getting bfing established? Like you ds1 had issueswith my diet. I keep telling dh that it is not the case this time around as everytime ds2 cries dh wants to take away more food!

Oh, and the pacifier is a NUk. I think dh bought the wrong size before, so found one of sa1's to try. Have also ordered some hospital pacifiers so we'll see what he ultimately prefers.

HayleyWayley · 09/01/2007 10:17

hiya ladies..i was wondering if any of ur babies show interests in baby gyms yet? Charlie is nearly 4 wks and he only wants to be held..he loves lookin at lights so for me to get some housework done..i was thinking of getting a baby gym to lie him in while i get things done, but didnt know if he wud be intersted or whether he cud see it! HELP!

castlesintheair · 09/01/2007 10:29

Hayley, DD2 (6 weeks) has "enjoyed" her baby gym for the last 2 weeks. I think she prefers just kicking on the mat though and having a look around. I find the kicking seems to get rid of the wind in her tummy too. Yesterday she enjoyed it so much she rolled over from her tummy to back and them gave me a huge smile. This was just after a marathon trip to HV, GP, chemist to get medication for her reflux. She already seems like a different baby. I'm SOOOOOO happy!!

Congratulations Gloria!

I just got an invitation to a hen night. I sympathise with you Northernmama (how unsympathetic of your friend about not taking your LO) I really want to go out too but as I look & feel about 100 years old, I might scare everyone

jabberwocky · 09/01/2007 11:27

castles, congrats on the happy baby! I'm so glad you got that sorted, both for you and her

Another baby gym addict here, too. Ds2 has been lying in his for up to 20 minutes at a time for several weeks now. It's the highlight of his awake time I think. I put it over his lambswool rug to make him a bit more comfy and to keep him warmer.

bebespain · 09/01/2007 14:01

Sounds like I need to buy a baby gym a.s.a.p.

Hayleywayley - like Charlie, Felix also loves looking up at the lights and being held too. When he's awake he's only quiet when I hold him. Not that I mind but eventually my arms turn to lead - so baby gym it is!

accessorizechristmas · 09/01/2007 14:23

hey wrinklytum, i think we know each other don't we
only thought this morning to get the baby gym out, ds2 is just 5 weeks so didn't think he'd be interested yet but by gum he loves his tiny love mobile (best thing since sliced bread!) - turns his little head to watch it whilst having nappy changed
castles, am v.glad you are happy
gave the lo his first bottle last night of EBM, went down a treat (dp gave it to him whilst I made dinner) but he drank it in less time than it took me to express it so...
and btw, anyone actually using cloth nappies, trying to decide if I can cope with any more loads of washing as house completely full of them already (no dryer)...

castlesintheair · 09/01/2007 15:34

AQ, yes! Which nappies are you using? I knew there was something else I have to do. Really feel I ought to go down the resusable route but like you don't have dryer and how many more effing loads of washing can I do in a day

Is everyone having a good day today It's very quiet on here!

My poor DS has a fever now with his chicken pox (temperature of 39.5 this am) and I'm just hoping DD2 doesn't get this as well. Can we give a 6 week old Calpol?

judemum · 09/01/2007 15:46

AQ am using terries- its ok once you getgoing but know what u mean about extra washing.....(trundles off to empty nappy buckets..)

judemum · 09/01/2007 15:47

PS had a shite night last night- just wanted to share that! feel like a zombie......with a headache.

accessorizechristmas · 09/01/2007 15:51

Gosh, don't think I could cope with terries, was looking at wambamboos, they seem to get raved about on MN. The prob's not doing the washing really, it's just where to put it. Poor ds1's room was full up all weekend with 6 loads of washing or was it 7? we could stick a dryer in the garage but then a) I'd have to trek out there in the cold & wet and b) not very eco-friendly is it?

castlesintheair · 09/01/2007 16:11

Judemum, I have alternate good & bad nights so maybe tonight will be good for you! I was looking in the mirror last night saying I looked a bit old & wrinkly and DH didn't disagree He said he'll be packing me off to the paint shop in a couple of months

HayleyWayley · 09/01/2007 16:28

well i just ordered a baby gym of mothercare for 20 quid hope he likes it!

jabberwocky · 09/01/2007 16:39

I'm going to give cloth a go in a month or two. Right now I can't cope with one more chore

Good first half of the night, not so good second half. Am resting up while ds1 is at Mother's Day Out.

bewilderbeast · 09/01/2007 18:32

doc seems to think ds is ok but we've to keep him quiet and watch him closely for the next few days

divastrop · 09/01/2007 21:13

hi just a quick hijak to see how elibean's lo is doing, and glad to see all is well

my lo spent 2 weeks in hospital with bronchiolitis(5 days in intensive care on a ventilator).she was allowed home on new years eve 2005 and is now a cheeky ,happy 13 month old.apart from a tendency for colds to move to her chest more easily, and having had a few coughs over the past year, she is fine now,health-wise.
i spent 6 months rushing her to the doctor/hospital every time she coughed, though, and if she got a cold i found myself constantly checking her breathing rate etc.i think the paranoia started to fade when she was about 6 months.

sorry for hijak again everybody.

HayleyWayley · 09/01/2007 21:17

my partner is going back to work tomorrow and im feeling really down about it, he has had 3 wks off and im scared how im gonna feel without him
i have 2 other kids 7 and 4 they are well behaved, i just hate being alone!

divastrop..glad ur little one is ok now xx
