First birthdays are starting to arrive and our babies are becoming toddlers! What will the next year have in store?

Definitely no potty training here! Seems way too early. We had a potty for when we've needed urine samples, so when she started heading to the corner to poo I put the potty in that corner, just to see what would happen. She mainly thinks it is a great seat for watching TV from! As I said, certainly not potty training, but if she's comfortable with the potty, then hopefully it will make things easier when we do get around to it.

She also thinks it makes a great hat Confused

cookielove · 07/02/2016 20:51

E isn't close to potty training we have one but mostly it collects dust!

Hmmm he is really into cars, he does brrrm and runs them around the living room. He has a remote controlled one which he has just worked out how to work! He is really into books he has a favourite which he makes dh read over and over again which is sweet. He is definitely getting into that phase where if it doesn't do what he wants it is THE END OF THE WORLD Grin

His eating is also really improving which ia brilliant!

ApplesTheHare · 07/02/2016 22:18

Oooh are people really thinking about potty training now? I hadn't thought to even read about it until DD turns 2 so I don't know when they're meant to start. Are we going to get left behind?Confused

MissMoo22 · 08/02/2016 01:12

Not even considering potty training til around 2. If your baby isn't ready for it, it can be one of the worst parts of parenthood. However, once they are interested in what happens in the potty/what you do in there, then it doesn't need to be a constant battle. DS1 was potty trained in one DAY. We had a box with £shop treats and every time he did something in the toilet (skipped potty, straight to toilet) he could have something from the treat box (it was covered up so each time it was a surprise and he'd never know what he would get next. DS2 was a nightmare, he just wouldn't play ball. He eventually gave in a few weeks after our first few attempts but took a few weeks to be fully trained. I'd give anything for M to be as easy to train as DS1.

The warmer months are supposed to be easier to potty train in as you can let LO run around with no nappy on and leave the potty within easy reach.

LillyBugg · 08/02/2016 06:35

Definitely not potty training here! I think we probably need to crack walking before even contemplating a potty lol. He's going to walk soon right?! 17 months now...

TeamEponine · 08/02/2016 09:40

Lilly - he will walk, they do! My cousin didn't walk until 18 months. Is he cruising around furniture?

Miss - my Mum said to really try to get potty training done during the summer rather than in the colder months. Less clothes to remove and clean following accidents! I might give it a try towards the end of the summer, but who knows!

Possibly a stupid question - but roughly when do you make the move from cot and sleeping bag to bed with pillows and duvet? DD has nearly outgrown her 6-18 month sleeping bags, so I need to invest in a few new ones and it just made me wonder when the change over tends to happen. She does sleep on a sleep mat at nursery now, but she moves about so much in the cot, I can't imagine her being ready for a bed for quite a while. It is a huge cot as it converts to a bed, so she can stay in it for quite a while yet I'm guessing?

Cute new thing - When I ask her to smile she grimaces at me!!! Not really smiling, but very funny!

FATEdestiny · 08/02/2016 14:16

We have used sleeping bags right through until they are outgrown. The next size is 18-36 months. We changed to duvet when child no longer fit the sleeping bag and made the change from cot to bed at the same time - sometime after 3rd birthday. That said, I see people on the sleep board who put their child in a toddler bed much, much sooner.

I'd not considered going to hide in a corner to poo as a sign of being ready for potty training. Both my girls do/did this. Neither of my boys did at any point. I don't think its a gender thing though, just something some one my children did and others didn't.

Did anyone see Call The Midwife last night? I'm finding this series quite harrowing, I cried a lot at last nights episode, that poor thalidomide baby.

LillyBugg · 08/02/2016 18:15

Yes cruising and using his walker a lot. Just not happy to walk at all. And he's so big not to walk, my poor back! 27lb last time I checked.

Haven't yet seen this weeks call the midwife but I agree this series is very doom and gloom. I think they've milked the original books of all the 'real' stories so it's all fictional now, and also many aspects of birth have already been covered so it all seems to be getting a bit desperate for story lines. Not that they shouldn't show these harrowing stories but it is a bit much.

TeamEponine · 08/02/2016 18:45

I've stopped watching it. Some of the storylines in the last series really upset me. I don't think it can put myself through it again! I'm definitely more emotional since having DD. It seems to have lost the lighter side that balanced it. It is just way too grim now.

If he's cruising then I wouldn't worry too much. He will just suddenly go one day! He is a big boy though. DD is about 20 lb and I struggle to carry her for too long. You must be getting good arm muscles Grin Gorgeous for snuggles!

cookielove · 08/02/2016 20:10

I am really enjoying call the midwife but agree it is soooo sad at the moment.

Your poor back lilly fx he walks soon, I think he must be last one to walk.

E is 18 months on Sat, its so odd as he really should only be 16 months Grin

polkadotdelight · 08/02/2016 21:31

DS has had a duvet for a number of months now. He outgrew the sleeping bag and was pulling up to stand/parading around the cot. He probably would have been fine but I was worried he would fall or bang his head. I dont try to get him to settle with it when we put him to bed but I put it on him and tuck the sides down between the mattress and the cot before we go to bed.

I am torn with Call the Midwife. I enjoy it but get so emotional watching it, a lot of it stems back to pnd after DS was born though.

DS finally has canines and molars on the way through, all at the same time and we know all about it!

polkadotdelight · 08/02/2016 21:32

I also am not even thinking of potty training until 2 at the very earliest.

lilone1234 · 09/02/2016 15:32

Polka - I was wondering last night, as I was checking on DD before I went to bed, how you manage to tuck duvet in around him without waking him, my DD is such a light sleeper, I wouldn't stand a chance!

How is teeth brushing going for people? DD absolutely kicks off when I try and brush them and I just don't feel like letting her do them herself is enough, especially as she just does a cursory brush and chucks it! Have tried doing them in front of mirror and 'showing toys how to do it' and she loves brushing their teeth but really I need her to be able to tolerate me doing them.

And, who's doing pancakes today? I am, yum!

OP posts:
KitKat1985 · 09/02/2016 17:17

I'm doing pancakes later Lilone. Ice cream and maple syrup is on stand-by! Grin

Still using sleeping bags here and no immediate plans to change. DD is such a fidget I don't think she would stay under a duvet!

No plans to potty train yet. I may contemplate it towards the end of the summer when it's a bit warmer and I can let her run around with no nappy on.

2nd month TTC #2 here and no symptoms at all (with DD I was nauseous and exhausted pretty much straight away), so thinking that we've not been successful this month either.

TeamEponine · 09/02/2016 17:45

Kitkat - that's a shame, but you never know! Pregnancies can be very different.

We had pancakes earlier. DD used hers as a telephone Confused

New word today - brick. It sounds like she is very clearly saying dick though Blush Obviously she is shout in it repeatedly. I hope she forgets before nursery tomorrow!

Teeth brushing is ok. She lets me help her briefly, and then likes to just wander around with it hanging out of her mouth. I just need to remember to do it. Bad mummy!

TeamEponine · 09/02/2016 17:46

*shouting.

Stupid autocorrect!

polkadotdelight · 09/02/2016 19:31

lil once DS is asleep he is completely out cold (he sleeps lightly after about 3am ish) so I can get away with it. If you think of the duvet as rectangular, as the cot mattress, then I put the duvet lenthways (or at a right angle) to the cot. Its wide enough to give good coverage of DS lengthwise and plenty if width to tuck into the cot sides too.

Teeth brushing is a total nightmare. Ive tried it all but for the moment DH holds him down and tickles him while I do the best I can then DS is allowed to have a go.

MIL made pancakes yesterday for us to warm tonight (I get frustrated at times but she really is a good un!).

polkadotdelight · 09/02/2016 19:32

kitkat am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

CumbrianExile · 09/02/2016 20:00

Oh, lots of posts since I last caught up!

Tooth brushing, A quite enjoys it (when I remember to do it - another bad Mammy!) and will let us brush them for a few minutes before taking over. He likes watching Daddy do it and following him though.

Still using sleeping bags here, he is too much of a wriggler to just have a duvet.

Pancakes tomorrow for us. I have started slimming world and weigh in day is tomorrow. As I generally allow myself a little treat on weigh in day, tomorrows is pancakes Grin

Good Luck KitKat

FATEdestiny · 09/02/2016 20:34

19 pancakes flipped and eaten here this afternoon.

ApplesTheHare · 09/02/2016 20:43

Good work FATE. That's impressive, I hope you got to eat some.

Wow KitKat you're so brave to be TTC. People keep asking if we're going to start soon and I keep wondering if there's something wrong with me because I'm nowhere near being able to face no.2 and babyhood any time soon...

LillyBugg · 09/02/2016 20:53

Also on month 2 of ttc here. Due on next week and we are away on holiday. I'm not taking any tests with me, just waiting to see what happens. Fingers crossed kitkat.

Pancakes are for tomorrow in our house, I have scouts on a Tuesday so not really had any time. They will be yummy tomorrow though!

I plan on sticking to sleeping bags, I just bought some 18-36 month ones from eBay. DS wriggles too much, and I value my sleep too much to risk him waking because he's cold.

He does keep waking up due to dropping his dummy, immediately standing up and crying in the night. I don't even think it's he dummy that's the issue, he just doesn't get that he has to lay back down! The interrupted sleep is bothering me which is mad considering its not really causing any sleep deprivation. Maybe it's time for the ribbon sewing trick from fate.

Acorncat · 09/02/2016 21:06

I've used a duvet since 12 months, my his room is pretty chilly so he's warmer with a duvet to keep his arms warm too.

We were struggling with teeth brushing till we started doing it in the bath, no idea what the difference is but suddenly he loves it! Also brush his at the same time as doing mine in mornings works better.

No pancakes here, forgot all about it. Maybe tomorrow!

Is anyone else still bfing? I think I'm going to be one of those that does it for years Hmm, I just don't see him ever sleeping without it - and it works so well!

LillyBugg · 09/02/2016 21:11

I would have loved to still be breastfeeding. DS lost interest around 10-11 months and I felt so sad when it happened. I really would have liked to have got to 2 and beyond to be honest. And when I say that to people they mostly look like this Hmm

Topsyloulou · 09/02/2016 22:13

DS is in 18-36 month gro bags. They look so huge. He is far too wriggly for a duvet. He now lies every which way possible during the night so no way he'd keep warm without his bag.

I had my implant out yesterday so we're not ttc we're just not using any contraception. We don't want it to happen just yet, Sod's law will dictate I'm pregnant next month! Good luck to those who are trying.

Not even thinking about potty training for a while. I am going to pick up a potty at the weekend just to get used to it.

Teethbrushing is also a nightmare here. I don't want a battle before bedtime so he normally gets away with a token attempt at brushing before he kicks off. I might download one of the apps & see if that makes a difference through distraction.

No pancakes for me, DS had his at CM & I couldn't be bothered to make them just for me. I'm not religious but i do always give something up for lent. This year it's chocolate, I've eaten half a box of after eights tonight to remove all temptation from the house!
