First birthdays are starting to arrive and our babies are becoming toddlers! What will the next year have in store?

Polka I know what you mean, my mum was a lot better with him too, a lot better... Not sure why I hear this time and again? That mums are better than mil with babies? Maybe because we are more used to the way they brought us up? Maybe because we can be quite straight forward and tell them what We want from them without upsetting them?

Fate, unlikely, but I always said either none or two... I just don't have any idea how independent my son will be in a couple of years time and how forgetful I maybe of all the difficulties... I left this one too late, so it is not as if even I want the second it will defo happens !!!!! Grin

The other thing is, bringing up a child is expensive !!!

lilone1234 · 13/10/2015 07:57

Yesterday I saw advent calendars in the supermarket. It has begun!

lil it's awful isn't it! Our local shops have had chocolates, cards and gifts in for the past few weeks. It's never started so early before, has it?? Saying that, I am keen to get started with it all to give me enough time to get sorted. I was dreadful last year as having DD hit me like a ton of bricks so I couldn't really stretch to cards and pressies and catching up with family and friends like we normally would.

How are all your DC's doing in childcare these days? I'm back to work this week and DD seems to be getting worse with the childminder, not better - is it common for separation anxiety to get worse before it gets better?

ApplesTheHare · 13/10/2015 11:33

p.s. Also does anybody else find that messages they try and post from the mobile site don't actually make it to this thread? I've written a few recently that don't see, to have actually posted once I've gone on the computer.

polkadotdelight · 13/10/2015 19:19

I struggle to post messages from my mobile. DH and I have an advent calendar every year so Im sure DS will end up with one too. He was a bit later walking than other babies here but he's really got it now. Im not sure if its linked to my going back to work but he is very clingy at the moment (and he is so damn heavy!).

Has anyones babies had their one year injections yet?

ApplesTheHare · 13/10/2015 19:54

polka DD's had her 1-year injections. She had a temperature for a couple of days but was OK other than that. Have you got them coming up?

DD is also very clingy at home since starting childcare. Do you think it wears off as they get more used to it?

Nazly · 13/10/2015 20:38

Yes we had injections; no impact on him whatsoever, as if it never happened. I was a bit worried about him crying and being scared and unsettled when doing the injections but he didn't even scream or cry- the nurse was brilliant and all three were done before he notices what's up and he was waving the nurse goodbye afterwards !! Smile

Apples I don't think anybody had worse experience than me with settling in nursery, but I can't really answer your question... Mine was all terrible and one day he suddenly decided there was no point in getting distressed so he got all fine.
He is not clingy at the moment, if anything, he just wants to scape as fast as possible and will not give mummy cuddles much (i remember I asked about this on this thread , i.e. if this day will come one day and it came too fast, too fast...) ! but he may have been clingy in the beginning of nursery but I can't remember much now...

My new concern is that they now want to move him up to the next room as they think it is time (or rather as the baby room has got no more space but the other room has spare capacity ) , but I feel he is still very babyish and not developed enough to go to toddler room. I don't know what to do though... Any advice cookie ?

Also cookie, a cultural question if I may: do you normally receive gifts from parents and if so in what occasions and what sort of gifts?

Nazly · 13/10/2015 20:42

Oh and something else, ds' nursery did a professional xmas card with his hand/foot print which is really nice; we can now order it in numbers if we want ... I'll see if I can send a pic on the app.

Ps.never used the mobile site; just the app and the actual site

polkadotdelight · 13/10/2015 21:38

DS has got his vaccinations next week and Im dreading it, he hates strangers at the moment so its going to be a delight.

I saw a christmas card on facebook using a footprint to make a reindeer face so Im going to give it a try. Have ordered cards, an ink stamp and googly eyes from amazon, fingers crossed!

Acorncat · 13/10/2015 21:56

Vaccinations - slight temperature that night but nothing else.

Nursery - he got gradually more unsettled when I actually went back to work which culminated in him being picked up after 2 hours of screaming one day. The next time he was much better and a fortnight later seems really happy there so there was a definite peak in unsettledness. I don't think ours move up a room till closer to 18 months, I would be worried that he was too small too.

KitKat1985 · 13/10/2015 22:11

I think here they move up to the toddler group at 15 months, so possibly not that far away. Sometimes I forget that she's more of a toddler now than a baby.

We have vaccinations tomorrow. Not looking forward to it. Sad

lilone1234 · 13/10/2015 22:30

Are all the babies walking now? DD is not even close, no interest in it at all.

Vaccinations - initial crying when she had them then fine, no temperature or anything but a week later got some measles spots rash (a normal reaction to the first MMR) and grumpy for a couple days with that.

OP posts:
Acorncat · 14/10/2015 08:40

Not walking here, he'll cruise around things fine but is definitely of the opinion that crawling is faster and safer!

CumbrianExile · 14/10/2015 08:49

No walking here either, well we have had a couple of steps now and again, but not consistently. Cruising and crawling the preferred options.

We had vaccinations just over two weeks ago, and since Friday he hasn't been himself. Got a bit of conjunctivitis and a cold. Not sure if its linked to the jabs or just a coincidence, but he seems to be coming out the other side now. Downside (or upside) is that nursery won't let him go (understandably) so I have had to take time off work.

I have found A much more clingy since starting nursery. He still seems to love going, we have no crying on the way there and when I pick him up he is enjoying himself. But at home I can't leave him alone anymore. I used to be able to run to the toilet and leave him safe in the living room, but he cries whenever I do that now and hugs me when I come back. He has been at nursery nearly 4 months now and is only starting to get less clingy (If he is distracted I can usually get out and be out a few minutes before he notices).

I believe here it is 2 before he will move into the toddler room, although they do sometimes mix them up a bit from about 1 to do certain things.

cookielove · 14/10/2015 12:23

Hello :)

nazly oddly I am going through the same thing, E is moving up to the next rooms I don't think he is ready but they need to move him for two reasons, he is walking, a group of his peers are moving through and he is in my room and I am floating.

The main issue I have is his food but I know he will be fine, tbf he doesn't eat brilliantly in the baby room either.

If you don't want him to move ask his key worker if he can be held back for a term and list your reasons they should accommodate you :)

Also gifts, its odd some parents give us gifts and some don't, we of course enjoy getting stuff :) It's nice to be appreciated. We often get a tin of chocolate for Xmas, sometimes eggs at Easter. When a child leaves the room we can get anything from hand cream, chocolate, wine, vouchers, or cards.

E had his vaccination about aa month ago 10 days later he had a really bad rash and high temp for 5 days. It was not fun!

FATEdestiny · 14/10/2015 13:14

DD's MMR and 12 month immunisations was this morning. Hard to tell just yet how it's affected her. I suspect the main problem will be the fact that I had to keep her awake for the appointment at a time she's normally be asleep. So the rest of her sleep for the rest of the day will be out of kilter.

FATEdestiny · 14/10/2015 13:51

got called away before I'd finished posting.

Regarding clinginess, if it helps my DD is also more clingy than normal and she isn't going to nursery or childcare. I put it down to a phase. It's mainly at the Teatime Witching Hour with the perfect storm of tiredness, hunger and Mummy not being able to sit on the sofa and cuddle that causes most of the clingy pick-me-up whining.

DD started one finger pointing this week. I think others are already doing this but we just got a general waving of arm in direction of the thing she wants previously. Now we have a proper pointing finger.

DD has been walking for a while now. She's at that stage that old people love. She gets sooooo much attention from old folks when we are out. Today in doctors waiting room (for her jabs) she was charging up and down the corridor and all around all the seats because of the old folks encouraging her.

TeamEponine · 14/10/2015 14:11

I find it amazing how differently children develop! DD has been doing one finger pointing for quite a while now, but she's still not walking. She cruises around the furniture and can take a few steps just holding on to us with one hand, so she's getting close.

Injections are next week and I'm nervous already. She's been poorly this week and it's been a total nightmare with work. She seemed so much better before bed last night and this morning so I took her to nursery, but they called as she's really gone downhill. She's lost her voice Sad

They move up to the next room at around 18 months, but it depends on the child. DD hasn't gone through a clingy phase and is loving nursery, which I am beyond grateful for!

lilone1234 · 14/10/2015 14:57

I've also found DD to be a bit clingier and she isn't going to childcare either. Most of the time she is only with me all day every day so haven't noticed, but the last few weekends when i've been trying to get on with things while DP is around she has not been pleased to be left with him!

OP posts:
lilone1234 · 14/10/2015 14:59

Team - I agree about the differences too. My DD also has been doing one finger pointing for months but can't even picture her charging down corridors yet! I suppose they can only concentrate on so many things at once.

polkadotdelight · 14/10/2015 21:53

DS is getting really confident with walking now and doesnt really crawl at home any more. On the flip side he doesnt point (at all) and his language is pretty limited to hiya and ok. Its swings and roundabouts.

Ive been back at work for 4 weeks now and Id much prefer to be home. I think I need a lottery win!

Nazly · 14/10/2015 22:22

cumbrian I want to thank you loads for telling me about washing powders; I switched back to fairy and it appears his skin is now improving... Thank you

Cookie, thanks, that's useful. See, I wanted to get something for ds' two carers but didn't want it to be weird. Glad to know it is not. About moving up, the issue is business. The baby room has the capacity of 6 babies and has a big waiting list. They are in rush to move babies out to get new ones in. The toddler room has capacity of 12 and has only 9 currently... But I just feel ds is still not ready. He is very babyish in some areas ... So I am just uncomfortable with their decision, but voicing this didn't change anything. When I visited nursery first they said around 1.5-2 years , but it is about development not age. Ds is 1 yr 1 month adjusted...

Fate ds does the same, but he not only walks in front of people wherever we go, he also thinks it is OK to go to them and start conversations, he waves to them, then if they have something interesting he asks for it, and he may also touch them. So I have to watch him all the time in case he makes somebody uncomfortable . We don't have a dog around in friends, etc. he is not used to dogs, so dogs get him super super excited. He makes so many funny chat noise and even shouts of excitement sometimes dog owners laugh Grinbut then when we get permission and go close, he is not sure about touching some of them...

And yes, babies develop very very differently. I am sure it shows something but not sure what that is!

Nazly · 14/10/2015 23:21

Just remembered I had a couple of questions - those of you using sleeping bags for babies, any specific make you recommend? Also do you know move to the bags that have feet too ? And if not how does your baby react ?

LillyBugg · 15/10/2015 08:17

Well I have a non pointing non walking son lol. So apparently a bit behind everyone else. There's another thread somewhere about a 14 month old not pointing or talking and everyone is saying they need speech referrals etc. I'm happy with ds at the moment, I think he will get there. There are other red flags on the thread as well to be fair.

We still use sleeping bags, we use BHS ones and they have been fine. The longer I can keep him in them the better as far as concerned. He doesn't get blankets at all, he just waves them around.

Interesting about gifts for key workers. I'm in a weird position where I work in the HR department for the nursery where DS attends. So the staff are my colleagues. And I've always been careful not to become too close to staff because you never know what might happen (disciplinary, redundancy etc) but it's been difficult where I'm now a parent customer, as well as a colleague, as well as their HR Officer. What do you all think? I think I do want to give a card and gift because DS's keyworker has been brilliant. And apparently before everyone was 'scared' of me so she was probably being quite brave when she was told she'd end up with my son! Not that I'm scary. Obviously.

polkadotdelight · 15/10/2015 10:56

LillyBugg I really dont think it matters just yet. If it makes you feel any better we still have night wakings and he is in bed with us by about 5am every day (and he doesnt usually go back to bloody sleep!).
