hi all

compo when we were potty training dd we use to sit her dolly on the potty and when she was not looking tipped a bit of water in it. She loved the fact that dolly had weed in her potty. Teddy might also work if you dont want to use a doll.

cruise ds does not sleep in his cot either during the day, i dont mind just so long has he sleeps for a while.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the tips with the potty training. I'll let you know how we get on!!
We're 100% on formula here now - I take my hat off to all those still breast feeding. As for weaning on to solids we will try and get to 6 months if possible but if she shows signs before we'll start earlier. Ds was weaned at around 20 weeks I think and no ill effects so far but I know it is a very contentious issue on Mumsnet

Coriander73 · 15/12/2006 14:26

Quite comical really when you consider that when we were all babies the advice was to wean at 3 months + & as short ago as 12 years it was 4 months....6 months is long time to wait for most babies....they get hungry & need more than BF/FF! DD was weaned at 5.5 months but Jack, I'm sure isn't going to last that long...quite sure!!

compo · 15/12/2006 14:28

phew, glad you're of the same thinking Cori

liquidclocks · 15/12/2006 16:40

DS1 was weaned at 4 1/2 months although I know the advice was to wait - he was a big baby and had started to wake earlier again so I figured he wasn't getting enough from the milk - I'm guessing DS2 will be the same. We were also on holiday at the time which I think was helpful as DH was around to help and it does take patience!

Asda didn't have any curtains so for now DS2 is sleeping in his vibrating bouncy chair - whatever works eh?!

cruisemum1 · 15/12/2006 17:03

ds back to his 30 min naps again today so i have one tired little boy here today - at least i have had a glimpse of what it could be like . Glad i asked about weaning, cos 6mths does seem like a long time on bf/ff alone. dd was weaned at around 4.5 mths with no ill effects so i may go that route with ds. not quite sure yet.
pistachio - i am exclusively bf ds too until weaning but you should try your lo with a bottle before then if poss. i have had terrible trouble convincing ds to take a bottle of ebm (what a waste of time and energy all that expressing was ) and ended up calling nct for advice. by 6 mths you may end up going straight onto a beaker if she won't/can't take a bottle. sorry to hear she has ben poorly. hope you all recover soon

cruisemum1 · 15/12/2006 17:05

ps. it is heartening to hear so many of you not able to put lo's down in their cots for a nap - what a relief....

clairemow · 15/12/2006 18:04

DS1 was weaned at 17 weeks, I'm going to try and wait longer with DS2, he's smaller so hopefully won't need anything extra so young. I've been reading some of the threads on this on MN, and it is highly contentious!!! The argument is that at about 4 months there is a MASSIVE growth spurt so they start to wake in the night again, and also that solids have fewer calories in them than more milk would have. I'm in two minds about it tbh, esp since with DS1 around, the longer I can leave it the better!!!!

redz · 15/12/2006 19:36

Hi all

Wow almost wondered if I had come on the right site! Had a bit of a makeover I see!

Took dd for her 12 week immunisations today she cried so much it was more upsetting than her first lot (she didnt really cry). I was almost in tears myself Cant believe in 4 weeks I have to take her again but to get three injections Ive been given the choice if I want to get two done then go back and get one more but nurse said they work better when they are all done together dont know what to do! I'll have to have a think.

Thanks Compo knowing that you have your lo in her own room is a help. The only reason I havent put dd in there yet is because im waiting for our handyman to put her blinds up which he has put off three times now He promised this saturday so I'll just have to wait and see. Me and dp did attempt to do it but it only ended in shouting and a whole lot of mess!!

Hope your all well

liquidclocks · 15/12/2006 19:42

Redz - just to let you know that DS2 has been in his own room from 6 weeks and DS1 was from when he was 4 weeks. Better sleep all round I think! (doors between rooms are always open of course though )

Coriander73 · 15/12/2006 20:31

redz...both DD & DS in their own room from day 1...

cruisemum, Jack doesn't nap in his cot! Only in his chair / rug on floor or out in the car...although he is napping much less now anyhow.

Anybody else's lo not liking the babygym? Jack just doesn't like it at all...should I be worried? DD loved her's from 8 weeks ish.

liquidclocks · 15/12/2006 20:37

Cori - DS1 hated the baby gym until he was about 4 months old. DS2 doesn't like it for more than a few minutes unless is one of those ELC travel ones with the jingly toys which I have now borrowed from my friends for while we're away over Christmas.

DS1 came into his own when he was old enough to use one of those blow up rings with all the scrunchy flaps etc round the edge. I wouldn't worry, just wave toys at him and he'll get the idea!

cruisemum1 · 15/12/2006 21:32

Crikey! It's amazing how many of our lo's don't nap in their cots. I guess the most important thing is that they do nap somewhere - for our sakes just as much as theirs . I seemd much more organised on this front with dd. Either she was an easier child or I did things 'by the book' more.
Cori - ds just beginning to get intersted in his babygym. It has a mirror on one corner and that is his favourite bit! He does stare and coo at the hanging toys but doesn't seem bothered about kicking/touching them just yet. He defo enjoys his time there now though.

Redz - know how you feel re: jabs. They are awful. I think I will go with the three in one session though as then it is all done for a while. . Poor babes.
Ta for feedback on weaning. I will look more into it in a month or so - I am just getting curious as it is the next 'big thing' in their little lives.

Finally - dd was in her own room in cot by 6 weeks. Ds is 14 weeks and still in with us (in fact we haven't even got his room ready yet!) I don't think there is any great rush. It depends on what you want.

redz · 15/12/2006 23:29

Cruise - I've thought about it and even though I know it wont be nice I'll let her have the three injections and get them over and done with. Although Im sure she wont see it like that Oh well we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Thanks Liquid and Cori, originally I had said I would put dd in her own room when she was 6weeks and I dont know where the time went. Now im really wishing I had because now I have a cold im coughing constantly at night and always on the verge of waking her (if that happens she will not go back to sleep) so for the last two nights I have had to sleep on the sofa and have the most painful neck and back because of it.

Dp is off on his hols on monday just found out he will be going to stay at his sisters on sunday night (she lives closer to Gatwick) I just feel like thats cutting our time together even more.
I basically told him we should say our goodbye's tonight! Im so p*ed off!
Little things like me popping to the shops while he stays at home with her or me having a long soak in the bath I wont beable to do. I know its only 10days but I looked on the calender and it looks much longer when you look at it like that.
Sorry I know im moaning again I cant help it

Ok Ive moaned, Im going to try and get into the festive spirit now. All I know is he better have an Audi TT wrapped up under the tree for me to open on xmas day!

kseaj · 15/12/2006 23:31

Have been thinking about weaning also, both dd and ds1 were done at about 17 weeks, i was also going to do ds2 at around the same time but have been told by alot of people that you should wait untill 6 months. Dont see why though it did not hurt the other 2 been weaned at 17 weeks. So think thats when i will start him.

Ds2 still in are room, dd and ds1 were in their rooms at 12 weeks, he will be 12 weeks next week and for the moment i am happy to keep him with us. This is are last baby and i seem to have babied him so much more than i did the other 2. They grow so quick and i hate the thought that these baby days will soon be gone and will never come back.

redz · 15/12/2006 23:32

Oh and I am going to miss him too! Especially on xmas day of course when all the family turn up with their husbands and partners and there will be me....all alone

Sorry sorry im doing it again...

kseaj · 15/12/2006 23:35

Dont be sorry moan has much as you like i would be and 10 day is a long time.

Aagh - just lost another message I had typed
Pistachio - ds got his triple jab in four weeks. I'm dreading it. I have to fight back tears each time
Re: bottles. I had terrible trouble persuading ds to take a bottle. Eventually NCT recommended Playtex disposable system whcih has really soft teats. It took about a week or so of introducing the bottle when he didn't really need feeding (ifswim) so that he could get used to the feel of it and then I offered (actually dd did it!) emb and he took it no probs! It is a relief to know that he can even though I don't have any real need to bottle feed. You can get the bottles on the internet at baby_supplies.com (or something like that). I'll check the proper web address and post it here for you if you like.

cruisemum1 · 16/12/2006 08:40

Pistachio - baby-supplies.co.uk

Myrtle1 · 16/12/2006 11:04

Cori - DS enjoys his play gym especially the mirror which we've put at the top so it is above his head when he lies on the mat. He loves looking at himself and grinning - its very cute
How did Jack sleep last night? I gave ned longer gaps between feeds during the day and he took more at each feed he then slept ok, fed at 11pm, 3am and 8:15am so I was really pleased.

Redz - DS has been in his own room since about 6 weeks.

I've got to do a secret santa present for my work party and I've never done it before. Are you meant to get something funny to do with the person or will any pressie do?

Coriander73 · 16/12/2006 13:53

Mrytle, he did the same again...11pm then through to 6.30!!! Sadly I was up with DD with her teeth / cough / chest etc!! Well, I'd rather have progress with Jack so a small price to pay although I do wonder whether I'll ever sleep through without interruption again (& am including DH in that!!)!!!

cruisemum1 · 16/12/2006 17:49

Yours honesty please ladies.... Is it alright if I top off ds's feeds with formula after a breastfeeding? He is still wanting feeding every 2 - 2.5 hours and I worry that he is not getting enough? Will it compromise my milk production? Will it upset his tummy? Which formula is best?

Coriander73 · 16/12/2006 19:17

cruisemum...no, I don't think so at all. How old is he now? My doctor told me that at 3 / 3/5 months they should start to go much longer between feeds so maybe it's worth a go. As for formula, personal choice I reckon...we used with DD & now use with DS HiPP Organic which has suited us very well.
