Our babies are rocking and rolling, crawling and climbing into the second half of their first year.

Let the fun continue...

nazly sorry, didn't mean to imply you should worry about portion size. It's my understanding too, that they self regulate so I'm going to continue to offer as much as he wants.

We had our first scary choking episode Sad on a houmous sandwich. I think he got a bit stuck then brought up a stream of sick which he then choked on. God it was horrible, he was totally panicking. At least now I know I can get him out the highchair in a couple of seconds! No harm done and he went on to have some more, non-chokable food.

Oh Acorn that's horrible! Glad you're both ok. So scary!

ApplesTheHare · 21/06/2015 17:48

I wake DD fairly often these days as she struggles to get to bed at 7pm if she sleeps past 3. It's a recent development though, I never used to wake her when she was a little baby.

Acorncat · 21/06/2015 18:58

Oh bollocks, I just fed my dairy allergic DS a meal with cream in it. Aargh! I even checked the packet a few times beforehand but somehow just didn't see it. Fingers crossed he's grown out of his allergy in the last 4 months. It's gonna be a looooong night. Angry

FATEdestiny · 21/06/2015 21:44

Sorry for my rushed post earlier, just read it back and it sounds almost mechanical. In Laws arrived just after I'd started writing so I rushed it.

Glad your little man in OK now Acorn. I may have read somewhere that many babies grow out of allergies (I think?). Fingers crossed for your DS.

I actually wake DD fairly often from both her naps. But that is because I have to, not because I choose to. Because she naps in the cot and I have the school run to do, I have to make sure DD is woken by 3pm to go to school. This in turn means she has to wake from her morning nap by 11.30am otherwise she wouldn't go back to sleep in time in the afternoon.

I wish I was able to just allow her to sleep as her body clock prefers. I can get away with pushchair or carseat naps when necessary but she never sleeps as well so don't do them regularly.

Today we had to tell the children that our dog is being put to sleep tomorrow SadSadSadSadSad They all cried.

Fate, so sorry to hear about your dog. It's devastating to lose a pet, especially for children. Sad

Acorncat · 21/06/2015 22:27

Aw fate Flowers for you all and your poor wee dog Sad

cookielove · 21/06/2015 22:28

Sorry to hear about your dog fate

Re naps and sleep, if at home E will sleep 3 hrs after he wakes up for 2 hrs, and then around 4hrs after waking another 1hr and 30 he currently goes to bed between 7-8 and sleeps through till 6-7!

We have a wooden block walker E loves to climb on it not so good at pushing as it goes fast!

LillyBugg · 22/06/2015 07:13

Oh fate I'm so sorry :(

cookie that is so much sleep! You must have lots of time to yourself, I can't imagine it lol.

Naps here...first one is usually around 8am, two hours after waking. Usually lasts 1.5 hours. Second nap after lunch at 1 is also about 1.5-2 hours. Occasionally a shorter nap happens later on but only if we're out in the car. And I don't like him napping too late because it disrupts 7pm bed time. Sometimes he throws me completely off and he just does 40 mins for a nap, or occasionally 2 hours plus. The latter is not often though.

LillyBugg · 22/06/2015 07:14

Oh wait cookie I just read your post again and completely misunderstood. I thought you meant the later nap lasted 4 hours!!

CumbrianExile · 22/06/2015 09:07

Hi ladies. I have a couple of questions if that's ok?

We have been exposed to chicken pox over the weekend (friend and her kids stayed over on Fri, on sat she discovered spots on her ds which have turned out to be chicken pox). What should i look out for? Is it dangerous at 10 months if he does get it? And should i be keeping him away from nursery now, without knowing if he has picked it up?

Sorry for the questions but i don't want to Google too much and scare myself. Grin

KitKat1985 · 22/06/2015 09:22

Hi ladies! I'm back!

Had a great couple of weeks in Majorca well apart from the fact I still ended up doing the lions share of all the childcare Back to reality now though and feeling a bit flat. Jessica's still not sleeping through and after 3 weeks of no night feeds we went back to some milk at night as it was horrendous (she would just wake and scream for 2 hours still without it and we were exhausted)! She's getting more mobile very day though and can now stand herself up by pulling herself up on objects. Me and Jessica are both bridesmaids on Saturday for a good friend's wedding so exciting times ahead, and then nephew's birthday party on Sunday, so busy weekend ahead!

Acorn the choking sounds scary. At least he was okay though afterwards. It's amazing how quickly they forget these things and yet we stew on them for ages! Hope the cream didn't upset him as well and that he's grown out of his allergy a bit. In a way it'll be a good way to 'test' if his allergy is still a problem for him or not, and you might be lucky and make the discovery that he's not that sensitive any more which would make things easier for you.

Sorry to hear about your dog Fate. Flowers

Sorry not had chance to read more than the most recent posts, but hope everyone else and their LO's are all well. xx

KitKat1985 · 22/06/2015 09:40

Oh. And something else happened. On Saturday evening we didn't back to 9pm, were completely out of routine, Jessica was screaming for bed etc, and I, for the first time ever, completely forgot to take my mini pill that evening until I found the pack again in my hand luggage the following morning. I followed the instructions etc and took the missed pill straight away and my regular pill as well yesterday evening, but (and I'm sorry for the TMI) me and DH had DTD on Thursday and I know the little swimmers can live a few days, and that Saturday pill I missed was when I was mid-cycle so was probably my more fertile days. Anyway I felt the chances are v. v. small. However literally 5 mins ago I went to the bathroom and I've had some light pink spotting, which is exactly like the implantation spotting I had when I got pregnant with Jessica..... It's really, really unlikely though right from 1 late pill?!??!? Confused I mean if it happened I wouldn't be upset exactly as I always said I wanted 2 children eventually but it would be sooner than planned, and I'm sure my work wouldn't be thrilled if I came back from a years maternity leave pregnant again. I'm sure it's really unlikely though.

KitKat1985 · 22/06/2015 09:47

Oh Christ, damn that spotting, I'm really freaking out now! Shock If, if, if, if it happened, I'd end up with an 18 month old and a newborn. Would I sleep EVER AGAIN?!?

Cumbrian you can get still take him to nursery, as it can take up to 21 days for it to come out! And he may not get it! Shouldn't be any issues if he gets it though!

kit well there is no point in worrying until you can test, one miss pill may mean nothing :) although I can confirm that sperm can live for days with DS we DTD on Sunday and I ovulated on Wednesday!

ApplesTheHare · 22/06/2015 12:05

So ladies, it's fine to plonk DD in her highchair in front of CBBies while I unpack from our holiday, right?? I've so much to do! DH took down all our stair gates to do some DIY the other day and now she can get out of every room I put her in while trying to do my chores.

KitKat that's scary, good luck and let us know how you get on.

FATE so sorry to hear about your dog Sad

CumbrianExile · 22/06/2015 16:02

Thanks Cookie He has only just started his settling in days, and I go back to work next week. Not good timing if he does end up with them, but at least I can keep up the settling in sessions for now.

Apples I do that quite often when I need to get things done. We still haven't got the stair gates up so I can't really leave him too long otherwise he gets into places he shouldn't Grin

holls2000 · 22/06/2015 21:58

We had a similar panic Cumbrian. i asked health visitor who said nursery etc as usual due to 21 day incubation period. good luck.

FATEdestiny · 22/06/2015 22:36

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Sad day as our 12 year old cocker spaniel was put to sleep today.

Cumbrian - My DC3 had chicken pox as a tiny baby, he was about 2 or 3 months old. In many ways it was easier for him because at that young age he couldn't scratch to make things worse. He spent the worse three days just in a nappy and I constantly dabbed his spots with calamine.

DC1 got chicken pox when DC2 was about 6 months old, but he never got them at the time. I believe he didn't catch because he was EBF at the time. So if you are still breastfeeding that may help.

KitKat - It's more than a decade since I was on the pill, but if I remember correctly can't forgetting a pill cause a bit of spotting?

OP posts:
CumbrianExile · 22/06/2015 22:57

Thanks. I'll keep him in nursery for now but keep an eye out for the spots. I didn't realise it was 21 day incubation period, that's quite a long time.

I guess it would be good to get it early when he can't scratch as easily.

Sorry to hear about your dog Fate Flowers.

KitKat1985 · 23/06/2015 08:26

Hope you get lucky Cumbrian and your lo doesn't get chicken pox.

So sorry again Fate to hear about your dog. It's always so sad when you've had pets for a long time when you have to say goodbye.

I actually feel a bit calmer about it all today (for now anyway)! With Jessica I felt nauseous pretty much straight away (literally she was conceived Christmas eve and the morning sickness started Christmas day) and I haven't felt like that, so think on balance I'm probably not although I can't rule it out completely. And you are right Fate, the spotting could have just been from missing a pill, so I need to calm down a tad.

In other news, DH has just been told that his request for flexible working has been denied. Basically he asked if he could work in the local office for the 2 days a week that Jessica is in nursery, so he'll be literally just down the road from her and can pick her up easily. We really weren't expecting them to turn him down given that, for example, he has probably been in the local office anyway about 75% of the time this year, and it makes no difference to his ability to work (being in IT he just needs to have access to the organisation's computer network to do his job, where he is in locality doesn't make much difference). But they've denied that and said that they want him to start being based more in the main office which is about 50 miles from her nursery! Shock This is a major headache as if he works his regular hours and finishes at 5pm he won't make it to the nursery for them to shut at 6pm. He's going to try and meet with them this week to try and negotiate a compromise with is working hours but we'll see. Hopefully we can work something out or we're going to be screwed.

In other news first WW WI post-holiday. Have gained 1.5lbs, which was actually less than I feared. Need to get back on it now though!

CumbrianExile · 23/06/2015 10:13

Thanks KitKat.

Hope your DH manages to get something sorted with work. All this organising around nursery pick up and drop offs can be hard work!

TeamEponine · 23/06/2015 11:56

Hi all!

Long time, no type Grin I have been reading the thread, but not had the chance to post recently.

I'm just on my way home from two nights away from DD, and it's been a mixed bag. I have missed her loads, but I've been so busy my mind has been kept occupied. Apparently she's been really unsettled today, so I think she's really ready to have mummy back (as is DH!). I think her and DH have done fantastically being home alone for two days though! When I think about some of my friends with children, their DHs can barely cope with the babies for two hours, let alone two days.

We've also managed to Skype a couple of times, which really helped. She is quite used to skyping, so I know she's comfortable with that way of interacting with people, but I wasn't sure how she'd respond to me on Skype. I was worried that she'd get upset, but she was so excited to see me and was clapping and waving! Do any of your babies spend time on Skype?

Nights are still a bit of a disaster. We tend to get one half being great and one half being a disaster. I really don't know what we can do to improve things, but DH and I are both exhausted.

DD is so, so close to crawling. She's probably started while I'm away, but I'm sure DH will lie and tell me she's not! She can get to sitting from lying down, and she's clearly very impressed with herself every time she achieves it as she squeals and claps herself! Not pulling herself up to standing yet. She's trying, but can only actually do it with some help.

She has a few nearly words now. So t-d is teddy, t-t is turtle, d-d is duck, b-b is berries or banana, or probably any fruit. Such a random set of words! She's also clearly understanding far more now. For example, you ask her where Daddy's/mummy's/teddy's nose is, she points to it.

Fate, so sorry to hear about your dog. How are the children adjusting and coping?

Kitkat, I was just wondering the other day when we will have our first pregnancy! Sounds like it could just be the missed pill though. Yay on the small weight gain too. Very impressive!

Acorn, how was your DS after having the dairy? We have an appointment with the dietician in a couple of weeks to start trying to introduce dairy into her diet. I really hope she's outgrown her intolerance as avoiding dairy is such a pain in the backside!

Cumbrian, fx no spots appear. I think they are now at an age though where it isn't too dangerous. Still not pleasant though.

I do wake DD if her last nap goes on too long. If she sleeps more than 2.5 hours during the day she is very difficult to put down at night. Her sleep routine now varies depending on if she is at nursery or not. At nursery she seems to have a short nap at around 9.30 and an hour at 12, she then has another short nap at about 3. At the weekend she just has two one hour naps. Bedtime is at around 6.45, although I'm trying to shift her closer to 7.00.

Speaking of portion size, how much do your LOs tend to have for a meal? DD is quite petite (around the 20th percentile) and seems to have quite a small appetite. On average, for lunch or dinner, she will have 2-3 baby rice cakes, the equivalent of 1/2 a jar of 7 month hipp baby food, and some fruit, either 1/3 of a banana or a few berries of some description usually. Does that sound like too little? I feed her until she refuses food, which currently means she will let me put it in her mouth, but she then takes it out and smears it in her hair or bib Confused

I really need to look for a new car seat, but think I'll need to go for a 0/1 or 0/1/2 seat. She seems too long for her baby carry car seat, but it will be ages until she reaches 9kg! I definitely want an extended rear facing seat, but beyond that I'm clueless. Very tempted by the rotating seats, but they are expensive Sad

Sorry for the super long post, but great to have the chance to get on here and catch up. Sorry for any posts I've missed and not responded to. Flowers
