Our babies are rocking and rolling, crawling and climbing into the second half of their first year.

Let the fun continue...

swimming. We did water babies which was ace for making friends and developing my confidence but too expensive. Our local pool is great though and dh loves coming swimming with us at weekends. They have changing rooms with a seat with a strap to keep kids in the right place.

I think I am a bit shit. The fruit b gets is generally in puree form or melon in one of those net things. banana makes him sick and windy. so other ideas please. The idea of grapes scares me. feel free to tell me to pull my socks up!!

ApplesTheHare · 04/06/2015 22:04

holls you're not shit, the fact you're worrying about which fruits he eats makes you a good mum! Fruit-wise, blueberries, apricots, ripe raspberries, pears and bananas are bit hits with dd. She loves peaches, nectarines, apple and strawberries but they all make her sick so I think they're too acidic, though she did have extreme reflux, so think she's still probably a bit dodge with acidy stuff. Good luck trying some new things Smile

DS is loving kiwi fruit at the moment. He tried it a few weeks ago as a finger food & didn't really like it. Tried it again this week with a spoon & he loves it. He also has an orange everyday, one of the mini ones. I peel it & he picks up the segments & normally puts it in in one go. He loves strawberries in his porridge, not so much as a fruit. He loves blackberries, Apple slices, pineapple chunks. I'm not very good with fruit so I'm making a real effort with it for him & I'm actually eating more as a result.

I haven't taken DS swimming in the UK partly because of the changing room situation. We've been trying to take DS at the weekend but DP works away so much it just hasn't happened & I don't fancy tackling the changing room on my own now DS is such a wriggler. He loved swimming when he went in South Africa so I just need to get on with it & take him.

Holls - If you are worried about the choke risk with grapes (which I have been with all of my children, not a bad thing IMO) just snip them into quarters or halves.

Snipping with kitchen scissors is easiest, much easier than chopping with a knife.

I do that with all fruit with skin. Babies are unable to 'bite', can only 'mush' in their mouths, so I think it makes logical sense to snip anything of a choke risk size into small pieces. Grapes, blueberries and orange segments for example - they are all snipped so that they are easier for DD to squash on her gums.

Only soft fruit that I don't worry about snipping into small pieces, because these can easily be squashed in her fist and/or gums so won't choke.

I wouldn't bother with a net (seen them, never used one) for ripe, squishy melon.

Hi all. Thank you for all of your messages yesterday. I'm sorry I couldn't reply yesterday - it was a bit of a mad day! I do really appreciate all of your support though. Ironically after my mega moan things have been better the past 2 nights. Last night she went through until 5am and then after a couple of oz of water and a cuddle she went back to sleep until nearly 7am!!! This is pretty much unheard of! The good thing is the past couple of nights she hasn't really been 'asking' for any milk so I'm hoping she's starting to get the fact that there's no more night milk on offer. Having said that EVERY time I've ever come on here and said we've had a better couple of nights we have a horrendous one the next night, so I've probably just jinxed myself! Also because me and DH have to get up early tomorrow to pack for our flight for Majorca (we fly out tomorrow) you can guarantee Jessica will want to keep us up the half the night! Not sure how she's going to sleep whilst we are away though. I think the hotel are only supplying a travel cot and I don't know how comfortable she's going to be in it. We've never stayed with her away from home before so a bit nervous about that.

As for fruit, I have to say Jessica isn't a great fan. She's tried bananas, grapes, strawberries, cherries, kiwis, oranges, etc and I think she finds the taste a bit sharp as she tends to just pull a face and lose interest, although sometimes if it's a bit sweeter she likes it. She does like her veggies though so I'm not too worried. Actually she's a bit like me as I don't like much fruit either but love veggies!

We're still doing swimming lessons but think we're going to finish the course we are doing after the next term as the specialist baby lessons we are doing are about 3 times the price of the leisure centre lessons and I just can't afford it! As much as having a year's maternity leave is lovely in many ways I have to admit once we are back from holiday we are going to be really watching the pennies as obviously my SMP will have ended by then so money will be a bit tight. We've only really been able to afford our holiday as family have given us euros for spending money as early birthday presents etc.

Anyway might not get a chance to log on before we go tomorrow but hopefully will catch up soon. May try and log on whilst away but not sure how good the Wi-Fi is and also will only have my phone so won't be able to type anything much! xx

Acorncat · 05/06/2015 08:30

Team yeah, he's still on ranitidine and omeprazole. I haven't reduced either yet, once he's comfortably sleeping better I'll go back to gp. He's on 2.3ml twice a day. We definitely get face rashes after eating certain things, he only gets tomato as a pasta sauce which he seems ok with. He got a really bad rash from an Ella's pouch with beans in it so think that's another allergy. I read that neocate tastes ok cold so was going to try it cold in his sippy cup.

I'm bad with fruit too, I only really give purée or banana. He's just not interested in strips of fruit. He ate grapes when I quartered and peeled them.

I don't go swimming as often as I should. Our pool has family changing cubicles which have changing tables and highchairs in them

whiteblossom · 05/06/2015 09:43

Lilly, I've got your banana bread in the oven as I type!

Kitkat, I'm really glad you have managed to get some sleep, have a really fab holiday xx

Can anyone recommend a good highchair. I'm having to return mine today. The straps keep pinging undone and as of today ds can push off the tray within seconds of sitting in it. I'm not been happy with it from the start, a bit flimsy.

I'm starting to feel bad that I've only tried ds with banana, orange, pear and melon.i think I worry about choking and I'm not much of a berry person ??

ApplesTheHare · 05/06/2015 09:58

white I worry about choking too (I'm sure everyone does!Smile ) so give dd mega ripe fruit so it can be squished easily. I'm sure that's how fruit's meant to be eaten anyway rather than how it's sold in the supermarkets now, so hard and cold.

Which highchair did you have? We're Ikea antilop converts. It's SO easy to clean and seems to keep dd herself a lot cleaner than other highchairs. The 13-quid price tag doesn't hurt either!

holls2000 · 05/06/2015 10:05

i wish I had got aan ikea highchair. mine is a right faff to clean. tempted to sell it on and get an antelop one.

so glad I am not the only one with fruit issues. Grin

whiteblossom · 05/06/2015 10:37

Hi apples I was in ikea the other day and ds was that in that highchair in the cafe. It's simple easy to clean and cheap, my only bugbear is the splayed legs.. but it is cheap...

Acorncat · 05/06/2015 10:38

I have the cosatto noodle supa, I really like it but it was £80 and it's nice and padded. It's not the easiest to clean but that doesn't bother me as I don't care if it's a bit grubby . I have the antilop at my mums and its ok, but loads of food drops between him and the tray and then falls on the floor which is annoying.

whiteblossom · 05/06/2015 11:22

Arrggghhhhh I want a micuna ovo.....jeez the price tag though, but I love it !

polkadotdelight · 05/06/2015 11:42

www.ikea.com/gb/en/about_ikea/newsitem/ikea_recalls_antilop

I saw this mentioned somewhere the other day. Google throws up lots of 2012 articles but the date on the above link is June of this year. I dont have an antilop but thought it worth posting.

whiteblossom · 05/06/2015 15:00

Anyone got the oxo tot sprout highchair.

Thanks polka, I did see that thank you ?

TeamEponine · 05/06/2015 16:05

Argh. Wrote a long post and lost it!

We have a fisher price space saver, which goes on a normal chair. Very easy to clean. The cover and straps come off super easily and wash up like new.

Kitkat, hope you have a really wonderful holiday!

The first week has gone really well. DD is settling in nicely at nursery and they are saying lovely things about her when I pick her up! I'm really in the seeing of things at work and the mornings really fly by. After all my anxiety last weekend, it has gone better than I could have hoped for.

Nice weekend plans for everyone?

TeamEponine · 05/06/2015 17:25

Oh, and someone mentioned bananas causing tummy problems. We had this, although DD loves bananas. Someone suggested organic bananas, and she's perfectly fine with those. Might be worth a try, although they are stupidly expensive.

LillyBugg · 05/06/2015 20:22

We have a Highchair that clips on to the table. It's good in that it saves valuable space but a bit of a pain to clean, I shove the seat in the washing machine every few days or so. It looks pretty grim most of the time, I even wash it before people come over so they don't think I'm some awful mother lol.

DS loves loves loves fruit. He mainly eats satsumas, banana and pear. I've tried melon but it never seems squishy enough for him. He also loves raisins and it's been interesting to see how he is improving in picking them up. Simple things!

It's so hot here, gro egg says 24.1 in ds's room. It was 24.7 earlier so slowly coming down. I find it so hard to know what to dress them in when its like this!

Tomorrow we are off to the zoo and weather forecast says it will be a little cooler. This makes me happy because the hood on my pram is crap and I constantly worry about the sun being on him.

Acorncat · 05/06/2015 21:13

Ha, tomorrow's forecast here is 10 degrees and heavy rain. It's 19 degrees in my DS's room, it's that inbetween temperature where I worry he'll be too warm in his 2.5 tog but too cold in his 1.0.

I tried the banana bread, it turned it more a banana mush but he enjoyed it anyway. I really am terrible at cooking!

I really hope I feel like that when I go back to work Team it must just be such a weight off your mind that she's settling in well.

FATEdestiny · 05/06/2015 22:19

I have two highchairs and keep getting them shoved at me from well-meaning friends trying to offload baby stuff offering to recycle in my direction. So I can't justify buying a new highchair no matter how cheap.

However if I was buying again I would buy the IKEA highchair without a doubt because of the ease of cleaning it.

I can't remember the make/model of the one we use but I prefer the one we have without straps. It has a bar between legs like the IKEA one, to stop child slipping through. But means you can just pop child in and out without faffing with straps.

?lilly that came out wrong, I didn't mean a carrier which works both front and back, but front &front facing, and back ... Front facing apparently is difficult and most of them don't have it as it may be bad for their legs...

I am waiting for the book to arrive by the way... Can't wait to try some of the recipes ...

Kitkat have a great holiday

holls2000 · 06/06/2015 06:04

kit kat have a fab hols.

We have had 3 nights of b sleeping 7-5.30 now which is great but I now need to encourage till 6.30... Grin

LillyBugg · 06/06/2015 07:10

Ohhhh I see nazly! Have a look at Ergobaby 360. Pricey but does what you want in a safe way (I.e. Keeping legs in an ergonomic position). :)

Yay for sleep holls! I had to get up once last night, and I haven't got up for a while. It was a bit of a shock. How did I do it before?! Weird how you adjust so quickly.

Acorncat · 06/06/2015 07:23

Gosh these babies are enough to drive you mad. After 2 nights of just 1 wake-up, last night he was up every 1.5 hours Angry I don't understand! He didn't eat anything different apart from the banana bread, though I did un-incline the mattress a bit but only because he was lying in the flat bit anyway Confused

Ella - my DP is the same. He tried to kill all the weeds in our garden and killed all the grass instead. Several boxes of grass seed later we still have no grass, but the weeds have come back! It looks awful.

Have a lovely holiday KitKat!

I had my hair cut this morning for the first time in over 18 months! The woman couldn't speak a word of English and had to ask what I wanted with gestures (worrying at the time but turned out fine!) but the bright was no small talk. I so nearly fell asleep though!

Got our house valued today so we can start getting the ball rolling with moving again. It's so stressful though and I'm quite happy where we are! We do need a bigger place though, and DP doesn't like the area we are in but I have grown very fond of it, and the children's centre is only 10 minute walk away which has become the focal point of my week now and I value it very much!
