Our babies are rocking and rolling, crawling and climbing into the second half of their first year.

Let the fun continue...

I'm glad your lo is better, Acorn.

And wow for the first word, Team! That is amazing!

You're right to say that they all do different things at different times. runs away to start madly coaching ds on talking and waving Wink

I survived monster plane journey of 13 hours in the plane, plus assorted layovers with DS on my own yesterday. Phew. Seriously shattered today, though. I think my arms actually ache from holding him so much! He just wanted to crawl around everywhere constantly. We did get many compliments on what a happy little guy he is, though. Smile

cookielove · 29/05/2015 09:59

team the only thing E seems to be interested in is pulling himself up to standing and then pulling everything off :( I think I may get him one of those activity tables!

He also loves playing with our shoes Hmm

And wow a first word thats brilliant!

The good news is for the last three nights E has slept through and all his naps now if we are in the flat are in his cot :)

ApplesTheHare · 29/05/2015 11:26

Cookie it sounds like he's really settled at the flat, you must be so pleased. And Team how amazing is a first word?? I would have sobbed!!!

IAte any plane survival tips you have would be great. DD's been fine on planes so far but I've had DH's calming influence there before. I'll be flying solo with her in July... Scared!

We have a horrible streaming cold and an inconsolable S today. The only thing that distracted her from crying was chromecasting Let it Go onto the TV and turning it up LOUD. Her big cousin is obsessed with it and that song is some kind of witchcraft as DD is entranced.

TeamEponine · 29/05/2015 11:42

Wow, Iate, I'm totally in awe of you managing such a long flight! I've not attempted more than a two hour car journey.

We also have a poorly baby. She was very unsettled all night and I worked out she had a high temperature and was bunged up so couldn't breathe through her nose, and therefore couldn't suck on her dummy. We all slept very little last night. She's already had an hours nap this morning and has just fallen asleep cuddling up to me on the couch. Sad

FATEdestiny · 29/05/2015 12:12

Apples - My 5 year old son is also obsessed with Le It Go and all things Frozen related. DD aged 10 pretends she's too old for all that sort of thing, but she isn't when no one is looking Wink

Must be the time for poorly babes - DD is producing some delightful green, gunky snot.

Are you all aware of the Minor Ailments Scheme? Free children's calpol, ibuprofen etc.

OP posts:
Acorncat · 29/05/2015 13:28

I'm not brave enough to try a flight, though it is tempting if they're free till 2!

Hope all the poorly babies are feeling better soon. The antibiotics have given DS constant diarrhea Sad I've given up on nappies and just covered the living room with towels and I follow him round with a wipe. It's more dripping than flooding Shock. It really is as grim as it sounds.

cookielove · 29/05/2015 13:45

fate I have heard of the scheme but from what I have read about it, it isn't available all over the UK, you have to take your child in to be assessed by the pharmacist and personally I can afford to buy my own calpol e.t.c so would rather leave that scheme for parents who really need it! There is a good link full of information I'll try and find!

Oh no, so many poorly babies :(

cookielove · 29/05/2015 13:47

here is the link

Acorncat · 29/05/2015 13:51

I should have said his nappies are off cos his bum is red raw, not just because he has the runs!

I've heard about the minor ailments scheme but haven't used it. I have bought stuff in pharmacies and its never been mentioned so I just pay Hmm. It applies to all pharmacies in Scotland I think, less so in England.

KitKat1985 · 29/05/2015 14:08

Yeah apparently the scheme doesn't run in the part of England I'm in. Grumbles. Angry

Can't believe we've had a first word already on this board. I think I'm going to cry when Jessica says her first word!

Acorn sorry to hear about your DS. That does all sound a bit grim. How much longer is he on the antibiotics for?

Acorncat · 29/05/2015 14:10

He has a 10 day course

It was reduced to 5 by one doctor but another said no, definitely 10 Sad

IAteSomeofthePies · 29/05/2015 16:18

Oh, acorn. You poor thing! I hope that gets better soon.

As far as plane survival tips, I must admit it could have been much worse. It was all fine at any particular moment, it was only hard because there was so much of it, if you see what I mean. I was more worried than I needed to be. He didn't cry, he had some naps at least, he was mostly happy and smiley. So don't worry so much! I brought some new small toys and books, a few beloved old toys, lots of rusks, biscuits, rice cakes, etc. And changes of clothes for both of us, as I was then covered in rusk and biscuit residue. I guess my only real tip is to be as minimal as possible on luggage. I was entitled to bring more, but getting me, ds, and just the one carry on rucksack sorted to get on and off the plane was quite enough. We were those people you don't want to be behind at security, too. Oh well. We also had one checked in rolling bag and an umbrella stroller, which is a lifesaver in airports. Oh, my other tip is eat in the airport, as it is hard to do on the plane if lo is a lap child. You can have a neighbour hold your lo while you pee, or I would change his nappy then fold up the little table and hold him while I had a quick pee, then stand up, unfold the table again, put him back on the table while I washed my hands. This was a bit of an advanced manoeuvre!

Is the minor ailments scheme meant to be for everyone? I thought it was just for the very poor and vulnerable, but could be wrong.

Thanks for the tips IAte [smi Where have you gone btw? Must be somewhere nice if long haul. I'm a big fan of travelling light so am hoping to take a backpack, small cross body bag for the plane and a little stroller. We're going for 3 weeks but it will be hot so no need for tons of clothes.

Does anybody know when babies just start breathing through their mouths instead of snotting on with the old nose breathing? DD sounds like a pug with a 40-a-day habit Grin

KitKat1985 · 29/05/2015 17:58

IATE thanks for the plane tips. Leaving for Majorca in a week. Very excited but just sat down and wrote a packing list today and the amount of stuff we need to pack for a baby for a fortnight is frightening! To be fair we are taking nappies and food with us (you can get these things out there obviously but apparently it's like twice the price as it all has to be shipped there from mainland Spain, so we thought better to take with us) but I reckon our packing is going to 90% stuff for her and me and DH will only have room to pack one outfit each and a toothbrush (slight exaggeration but you get the idea)! :)

Zanashar · 29/05/2015 18:03

Team - oh wow @ first word! GrinGrinGrin Must be wonderful to hear. DD is nowhere near any proper words yet. Just screaming and wailing very loudly, with the occasional oooooh!

IAte - v impressed with your long flight etc. we've only done a couple of trips to Belfast, first one was great (@3months) but the second one DD was grumpy on way there. I couldn't imagine having to do that without DH
We've another trip over there planned for August hopefully and also perhaps something that's a few hours (max 4-5) further away but DH and I are both thinking about chickening out and doing a staycation instead ( I really want some proper sun though!)before I return to work. I'm still working on him. Wink

DD fell off the changer yesterday. I almost had a heart attack but somehow my ninja reflexes let me catch her about an inch before she hit the floor. ConfusedConfusedConfused She seemed completely oblivious to what could have happened.

minor ailments- this is potentially available from all pharmacies BUT it required each premises to be individually accredited by the local PCT (they don't exist anymore) as well as each pharmacist. It's definitely handy in areas where it's needed and can save trips to the GP but there hasn't been any new training etc available for a few years now because there is no funding available from the NHS pot.

Zanashar · 29/05/2015 18:07
  • the minor ailments service is also only for people eligible for free prescriptions
holls2000 · 29/05/2015 19:36

ok..rant alert here.

dh is going to cricket tomorrow. at the start of week dbil and dfil said would he go.over tonight for a curry and a few beers before day out tomorrow. I said fine but obvs would like to see u having just got back. dh said he wasn't fussed either way.
tonight dbil is still asking if he is going so I say look just go. then he announces whole thing will cost 160 and I go a bit white. so he says he isnt going tonight even though he wanted to and it's not fair cos I went out for lunch today and he gets to do nothing.

I feel Sad because I thought he had made decision to stay due to spending time with us. no. and I object to him saying he never does anything. ..football season ticket, cricket tomorrow, gym 4 nights a week, regular bike rides. I said I understood about loss of our social life but would love it if we talked rather than him just watching sky sports all night.

arghhhhh. feel am shit wife.

TeamEponine · 29/05/2015 20:54

Holls, you are not a bad wife! It sounds like socialising and hobbies time might be quite unbalanced?

Acorn, Naty nappies are great for sore bottoms. Not as absorbent, but certainly better than no nappy.

I avoid using the minor ailments scheme as I can afford calpol, etc. it actually costs the NHS a lot of money. It was designed to relieve pressure on gps so that people could ask a pharmacist for advice instead. Because of this, for every medicine that is given through the scheme a payment is given to the pharmacy to cover the pharmacists time. I think it is about £4. So by using the scheme it is not just costing the NHS the small amount of money that the genetic paracetamol costs. It is totally fine to use the scheme if you need advice or cannot afford the meds, but I prefer just to pay for them myself and leave the resources in the NHS for others that are in need, especially when the NHS is so stretched.

DD has a throat infection Sad

ApplesTheHare · 29/05/2015 20:58

Oh no Team. Hope your night isn't too bad. How did you find out about the throat infection? I'm wondering if DD has something more than a cold?

holls you're not a bad wife at all! It sounds like your DH gets TONS of time for hobbies, especially as the father of a small baby. DH and I try and make sure we walk the dog and go running, but that's it for leisure time atm.

holls2000 · 29/05/2015 21:42

Thanks ladies, I know deep down that I was right but I am just so exhausted by trying to keep his life the same, when actually it shouldn't be!!! V selfish of him.

Oh no to throat infection.

B has a lump in his neck, gp said a reaction to his ear infection weeks ago but to go back in 2 weeks if not down.

Fate, how on earth did you find time to decorate??

Only because I have a fantastic family. DH is off this week and older three children spent Wed-Thurs with my Mum and then Fri-Sat with my PiL. So we've had more-or-less four days with just baby. My brother has been here for two days to help us decorate and move the furniture.

I had a lie-in the morning. That was a mistake. It is now nearly midnight and I'm not tired. Watching some rubbish Schwarzenegger film on E4 rather than doing what I should be doing - sleeping. So used I am to not having much sleep that when I get plenty it means I can't get to sleep the following night.

Madness.

ella I agree. men are twats sometimes. my dh is clearly pissed off cos I am still off work. ..he sees maternity leave as holiday. hahahahahahahahahaha

dick.

ApplesTheHare · 30/05/2015 07:16

Omg holls I would be Angry if DH tried to tell me mat leave was a holiday. Has he ever looked after your ds for a full day...??? If not, could he while you go and do something else? He might change his tune!
