I've been told via Whatsapp by a MN'er this morning who used to be a member of the ante-natal group that there's a Facebook group, but that they won't accept anyone or her back Hmm (a bit weird if you ask me, but each to their own, and have really left a PND suffering mum feeling like shit, but I doubt they care in their "clique")

So are there any August Mums left on here willing to chat, without connecting to Faceache?

jess hope you're feeling better soon

mrsmilk i try to go out once a day but that might just be a walk in the park with the buggy some days. in terms of organised things i take dd swimming and sometimes do a drop in yoga class, and also sometimes rhyme time at the local library but i think the baby groups are more for my benefit than dd, although she is happy at them and seems fascinated by other babies. The actual activity is a bit lost on her still but i would say that if I'm enjoying it she will too, and its just good to be out of the house!

GingerCuddleMonster · 02/03/2015 21:21

Jess hope your feeling better too.

mrsmilk none, mine goes to bi groups Sad I just don't have the time with work. He goes to nursery twice a week where he spends hours with other children so I'm going to count that as enough other kid time Grin swimming wise I'm going to start trying to fit it in once a month and maybe one other activity if I can. so you do more than me and I'm not particularly worried. but then I'm so laid back I'm horizontal when it comes to most things haha

Exciting news in our house.... DD has got 2 tiny teeth poking through her gums!!

they are scarily sharp too!

GingerCuddleMonster · 03/03/2015 19:20

Ahh felkov how exiting Grin. DS has his bottom two through now, they are weirdly sharp I agree, he bit me yesterday and drew blood Shock.

Oh jess hope you're now well on the mend, that sounds awful!

Thanks for all the comments on baby groups, I feel as though we're not doing too badly then, as she does get interaction with other babies at least 3 times a week and maybe the organised activities are not really going to be of huge benefit to her while she's so small. We did take her to a special weekend baby sensory class the other day (as DH could drive us there) and she seemed to enjoy it but I didn't think it was quite as amazing as other mums had led me to believe. These are going to be on once a month so I think we'll try to go to them when possible - you don't need to sign up to a block.

Exciting about the teeth felkov! I have only had a minor bite on a finger but I think it's probably only a matter of time before the boob gets it, eek.

jessplussomeonenew · 04/03/2015 09:01

Ooh, teeth! I'm sort of dreading them, particularly as he's been very chewy during feeds while teething (bad enough without teeth!), but I'm getting to the point where I'd like to see some result for all the teething!

felkov · 04/03/2015 09:34

Well maybe I shouldn't have been quite so excited about the teeth. major downside is that i had a terrible night's sleep last night as the poor wee one couldn't settle. i think she somehow was biting her fingers and kept waking herself up in pain.

this morning she bit me too. ow!!! I'm not a big fan of using too many painkillers but i think i will try calpol if its the same tonight as i only managed to sleep between 12 and 2 and then from 3 to 6am so feeling pretty rough now.

GingerCuddleMonster · 04/03/2015 11:46

I used calpol when they were obviously cutting through, it was the only way to get sleep.

I'm so happy I've got 5days annual leave and I'm loving it Grin. I've dropped DS off to nursery today and have the day to myself. is it bad that I'm enjoying haveing peace and quiet?Blush

Definitely not bad ginger happy mum equals happy baby!

GingerCuddleMonster · 04/03/2015 11:58

he is probably going to come home covered in paint again, he has a ball their so he won't mind Grin.

Can anyone help me out with chocking?? DS chokes constantly, 3 times I've had to turn him upside down and do back blows to dislodge finger foods Sad. I don't know what I'm doing wrong?!

OP posts:
mrsmilkymoo · 04/03/2015 13:39

Enjoy your day off ginger. I'm sure you'll feel so much better for a day to yourself.

Can't help on the choking but it sounds scary. Dd gags sometimes but has always managed to cough the foods forward.

We used calpol when dd was teething too. I'm also wary of using painkillers but one night she was up for four hours in the night, I gave her calpol, and she finally went to sleep. So then I felt bad I hadn't given it to her sooner. It's always so hard to know what to do for the best.

cookielove · 04/03/2015 16:57

Hello all :)

Re: choking is he gagging or choking? Back slaps are the right thing to do! Make sure the food you are using are cut to the right shape e.g. peel skin off of grapes and cut into quartets. Cut sausages into slices not round circles but long strips. Or try spoon feeding maybe that he can't handle ff or lumps yet!

E definitely teething as he chewing like mad, but he has cold so only wants milk which is a shame as he was doing so well as food.

We are out in classes three times a week and often meet friends for coffee on the other days. We like to be busy, E is a social bug and I like to chat :)

GingerCuddleMonster · 04/03/2015 17:57

he chokes as in goes red then blue and never attempt to cough, I've given him what was on the sheet from the HV Sad I'm going to clinic tomorrow to get him weighed and that so I'll ask them too Sad he's like a Hoover and just sucks food dowm

OP posts:
jessplussomeonenew · 05/03/2015 10:48

Ginger, how scary for you! Reading up the thread it sounds like you are giving finger foods after starting on purees? This can lead to choking because they learn to swallow the puree before they learn to chew, so when they get bits they don't know how to manage them. Blw means they learn to chew before swallowing, so it's safe to give them finger foods early on because they just spit out the bits. If he's learnt to swallow you may need to go much more gradually with introducing lumps, basically following traditional weaning rather than baby-led. Hope you manage to get to the bottom of it either way!

GingerCuddleMonster · 05/03/2015 11:59

he's had finger foods along side purees from the start though, I think I will just stick to pures though, or he's gonna choke to death Sad . What I've found is he is tearing with his front teeth then gumming it then attempting to swallow, but the chunk he has torn off with his teeth is just too big.

I have a hubby net thing so will place any finger food in that. As nice as the idea of blw is its really both worth him chocking constantly so I'm gonna abandon it. Sad.

OP posts:
jessplussomeonenew · 05/03/2015 12:58

Ginger, that sounds really sensible! It always worries me when internet advice says you can combine blw and spoon-feeding as my understanding is that it can lead to exactly what you describe. I think people get confused because both traditional and baby-led approaches involve giving both finger food and puree, but they do it in different ways, and as I understand it, it really does help to be consistent.

GingerCuddleMonster · 05/03/2015 18:57

so clinic went well DS is sticking to his percentiles, he's between the 2nd and 9th. Food wise we've been advised no more finger foods till 10months, for now we are to mash up root vegetables and other vegetables with a fork or feed from the 7months + jars that have the small lumps in them. HV said for variety to introduce quite a few jars so he experiences a wide variety of flavours. Not what I'd planned, but at the end of the day it's better for him so that's good enough for me.

He enjoyed hipp organic cottage pie this evening from a jar and chewed the little lumps and no choking so I'm happy Smile.

felkov · 05/03/2015 19:37

glad to hear you had a good visit to the clinic ginger

I'm having the opposite problem to you as DD isn't actually swallowing anything much yet.

99% of the food I've offered ends up on the floor or down her front and every time I've tried puree she just spits it out. its so frustrating and such a waste! I'm also still trying unsuccessfully to get her to take a bottle. she just chews it and lets the milk dribble everywhere.

Sad some days i wonder why i bother!

jessplussomeonenew · 05/03/2015 19:43

Felkov, my DS is also not swallowing hardly anything but he's enjoying the tastes and I'm hopeful that he'll get the hang of swallowing in time!

felkov · 05/03/2015 21:27

jess that makes me feel better! i guess i just have to be patient. not very good at that

mrsmilkymoo · 06/03/2015 08:31

I don't think DD is swallowing huge amounts either. Some meals I think she's doing better but then others I feel as though she's not actually consumed anything. She is having fun with the tastes and textures though like Jess said. Her coordination has improved a lot too. We gave her bean burger, strips of pitta, and veg yesterday and she did try everything.

My mum keeps saying that she won't eat much all the time I'm still bf-ing her. Apparently in her day when you weaned, you dropped milk feeds altogether when you started solids. Poor babies that didn't take to solids straight away!! I do worry though whether I'm giving her a bf too close to a mealtime but then milk is still supposed to provide the bulk of her calories, right?

mrsmilkymoo · 06/03/2015 08:34

ginger glad the clinic went well and also nice to see someone else with a small baby. DD's just above 9th centile but seems a lot smaller than all her baby friends. She's still in the 3-6 month size clothing but friends who are two months younger are in the 6-9! She found her line at 6 weeks though and has stuck to it so I guess she's just naturally small.

jessplussomeonenew · 06/03/2015 17:59

I've heard it is not unusual for it to take months before a self-feeding baby actually realises that food is something that fills their tummies, and it's generally not until after that that they start getting enough calories from self-feeding to be ready to drop a feed. I just give a couple of sticks of everything I offer - a taste and a spare - to reduce wastage.

mrsmilkymoo · 07/03/2015 17:50

Thanks Jess, that's what I thought. It's good to get reassurance as I'm always doubting myself!

Today we have been thinking about baby proofing...there is so much stuff in the lounge that it's going to be hard to keep her from. Bookshelves and the tv being my main concerns.

felkov · 08/03/2015 01:15

Good luck babyproofing!

Things seem to be going a bit downhill here, not sure if its teething or weaning or what but poor DD has been violently sick and screaming with pain Sad we were in the car and she normally just sleeps but this evening she started crying, then screaming/shrieking and then projectile vomited twice. i thought she was going to choke and dh had to find somewhere to stop very quickly.

she hardly slept last night and tonight seems the same. having to hold her in my arms to get her to sleep. really hope things improve tomorrow, typical that its Sunday and no GP!

hope everyone else is having a better weekend!
