Just wrote a long message on the old thread only to have it not post because we'd filled it.

We really ought to do less chatting and more sleeping Wink

Olivia has been pointing for a while. But she learnt to blow just before Christmas as she was trying to blow the Christmas decorations. All good until she tried to do it with a mouthful of weetabix haha!

It's amazing how they learn things at different speeds but they all get there. I'm finding it fascinating watching O learn all these new things.

MrsGSR · 15/01/2015 23:52

Nature that's pretty much what I've read. There was a study based on baby Einstein or something similar. They found that the babies who had watched it had less verbal skill than babies of the same age who didn't watch TV. But those who had watched it with a parent who had talked to them about it afterwards had done better. There's also been studies about the amount of TV babies and toddlers watch and how well they do at school (aged about 7 I think) which suggested the less TV the better, but I think it relied on parents remembering their kids TV habits 5+ years on.

When I've had 2 hours sleep the night before, or need to finish an essay before lunchtime, I've stuck L in her pram facing the TV. I doubt it'll do much harm in moderation. I think the real issue is people like a certain family member of mine who put Cbeebies on and ignore their kids all day every day.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 16/01/2015 00:06

A has no words. She says dadadadadada a lot, and 'doh', like the alien woman on Dr Who once - can't think of the episode, but if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean. Mainly, she just shrieks or roars. I imagined that early walking (9m) probably meant late speaking, and I didn't speak until 2, so will be surprised by any words!

felix yyyy to the hormonal contraceptives! I felt like a new woman after coming off the pill. I will never go back. I'd rather have my tubes tied.
Also, we get out three or four times a week to classes, but to the park/shopping any days we don't do a class/activity. Otherwise, I'd be posting from the beyond, a pale shadow of my former self.

Meeting went very well, thank you. I cried twice, Blush but they were lovely, and apologised for all the shit, and showed me the various things which they're doing to improve maternity care. I've gone from vowing to give birth in a field surrounded by rabid bulls rather than go back there, to thinking it would be survivable next time, if I couldn't avoid it. So that's nice.

book poor P. And I hope your mum goes home soon.

FelixFelix · 16/01/2015 09:08

Humpty glad the meeting went well.

We had a much better night last night. She woke up at 11ish and 1.30. She woke up a couple of times more but went back to sleep so I'm not counting them Grin

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 09:17

Humpty glad the meeting went well, and it sounds positive that they are implementing changes because of how you were treated.

Felix glad S slept better. O was exhausted last night. Put to bed just before 7 and didn't wake up till 7.30! Shock I had to leave her at home for Dh to take to the MIL as I had to leave for work. Feel a bit sad I didn't see her but it's the first time I've been early to work for ages! And it's Friday so I should get to leave on time as well Smile

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 09:20

MrsG I wish we could just put the TV on and ignore O, but the little madam just does not stay still! Her favourite game is taking toys and putting them in the dog's water bowl or trying to eat the dog's food/treats! Old MacDonald and a sock ended up in there yesterday! She mostly just walks around and plays and the TV is just background.

Bambooshoots14 · 16/01/2015 10:01

Sorry was at work yesterday and didn't have time to rewrite my post

nature I didn't mind you asking at all. No rational reason really just I wajt him to be a little baby for as long as possible!

humpty I'm glad it went well. Did they say anything about missing how big a was? They never picked up h was big (10.7) even though I had growth scans

H watches tv when he gets home from nursery about 6 and has a snack. He loves it. I was shocked the other day when his recording finished he came over and found the remote and pointed it at the telly. Then when that didn't work gave me remote, pointed and telly saying yeah yeah.

Got a half day today then off to soft play for a babys first birthday. Looking forward to it

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 10:13

Another question for you all. What do you give as a snack? O eats a varied diet but we seem to be lacking inspiration on snack ideas. She has dried fruit, Fruit, Cheese (her favourite snack!) or sometimes a biscuit, but we can't think of anything else to give her.

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 10:24

Jealous of your day Bamboo wish I had a half day. O is off to soft play today as well with a baby who is a day older than her. Slightly weird though as I met the babies mum through a breastfeeding group and swimming, but my MIL met her through the library, and now my MIL sees her more than I do!

Bamboo I can't remember but did you have an interview for a new job recently? Or have you recently started a new job? How is it going? Are you all settled in your new house now?

I think we are about to undertake major work on ours. Hoping to get it all done before the new baby comes, but I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed at the amount of decisions that will need to be made. Need to make a start by calling an architect today though to get the ball rolling! Every single room in the house will need something doing to it. Even O's room Sad as the wall may be being moved, so some of that will have to be redecorated as well. We were planning on holding off on the bedrooms until downstairs was done but we are just going to get it all over and done with now as we could do with reinstating the extra bedroom (It was a 4 bed house, converted to 3, which we are reinstating to 4).

FelixFelix · 16/01/2015 10:29

Nature I give fruit, cheese and biscuits the same as you do. Her ultimate favourite snack is Soreen malt loaf! I'd never have thought to give it her until I read it on here Grin She loves the banana flavour one best. She also has yoghurts and those little pots of rice pudding.

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 10:32

Felix O would live on yoghurts if she could. You can't even go near the fridge when she is having dinner as she thinks you will be getting a yoghurt out and then refuses to eat anymore dinner! We give fruit pots as well. I haven't tried Soreen but will definitely give that a go as it's nice and easy.

FelixFelix · 16/01/2015 10:42

You can buy little 'lunch box' packs too with individual portions. Really good for when you're out and about.

It's snowing here Confused It snowed earlier in the week and settled but the rain washed it away. Just started again and it's heavy and coming down fast. I'd plucked up the courage to go to a new group today too and now we will have to stay in!! I have the car today but we live in the worlds hilliest place and I've not driven in snow before Sad

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 10:47

What time is the group Felix?

FelixFelix · 16/01/2015 10:49

1.15 so there's still time!

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 10:51

Hopefully the snow will stop, and the roads will be clear for you. I assume it will be too far to walk?

FelixFelix · 16/01/2015 10:53

Yes it's too far and I have an irrational fear of slipping over in the snow Grin the sun is out and everything looks melty!

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 11:03

Sounds promising then. It's one of the things I'm worried about at the moment is slipping on ice! I'm rhesus negative so if I do slip it will be an extra injection for me which I would very much like to avoid!

MerryPops · 16/01/2015 11:13

Go for it Felix, there has to be a first time to drive in the snow so why not today!

A watches a bit of TV each day but we try and turn it off if he's not watching it.

We do those snacks too, also flavoured rice cakes etc. Going to go get A weighed next week as he is just turning 1 then probably won't bother after that, he last got weighed about 3 months ago. I am slightly concerned he is a bit on the chunky side, I know as he walks more and expends more calories he might slim down a bit but at the same token I worry he is being overfed (given that I don't look after him during the day it's hard for me to monitor, Dh thinks I am overworrying). Dh and my mum like the easy option sometimes when he is whingy, which inevitably means milk or snacks. I'll maybe know more I get him weighed, but his thighs and chin(s) say he might be a bit on the big side. Am I being a bit pfb?

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 11:24

Merry you will probably find he slims down. O went a bit podgy just before Christmas but then shot up again, which stretched it all out. She literally went from fitting in trousers to them being too short overnight! And when they become more active they also slim down, but it's your job as a mum to worry Smile. I've no real idea what O eats during the day either as she is with MIL but I just presume it will be fine.

TobyLerone · 16/01/2015 12:16

Nature, we're hoping to start some pretty major renovations this year too, so I might have to pick your brains!

felix, driving in snow is usually fine because the roads are normally fairly clear. At night it's a bit dodgier because the temperature of the tarmac is lower so there's the possibility of ice, but in the day it usually melts on the roads even if it's settling elsewhere. I'm jealous of your snow!

I have no idea how much M weighs because she hasn't been weighed since May Blush
I'm sure A is perfect, though, merry :)

Re snacks, I give dried fruit, crackers, cheese, grapes etc. This week I've made some wanky homemade healthier stuff -- wholemeal blueberry and coconut muffins, some weird sort of peanut butter balls, homemade rip-off Nakd bars, and I've got a fruit loaf proving as we speak.

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 12:28

Toby what are you thinking of having done?

Our list is (what I can remember anyway), redecorate entire house, new floorings throughout, remove remaining half wall between kitchen and dining room, new kitchen and utility units, rearrange utility and downstairs toilet, reinstate 4th bedroom which will involve rearranging ensuite, bathroom and O's room, install new bathroom, ensuite and downstairs toilet, remove chimney breast from dining room and bedroom, insulate and board attic and install proper drop down ladder, replace roof over kitchen, finish off the flower beds in garden, repaint outside of house, install new fireplaces in backroom and front room. Argh it is going to be a nightmare Sad but it will be amazing when it is finished (hopefully). Bit worried about how much it is going to cost through, just hoping not more than our budget!

FelixFelix · 16/01/2015 13:16

Crikey nature that's a lot of work Shock

Toby I'd never thought of making things like that. I love baking so I'll give it a go. Also how do you make the Nakd bars?! I LOVE them but they are so bloody expensive.

Snow melted so went down to the children's centre. I rang them earlier and they advised to get there early as they get busy very quickly. Couldn't find an effing place to park!! The village it's in is a world heritage site so double yellow lines everywhere and permit zones. The two pay and displays close by were full too. I'm so annoyed!! Sorry exclamation mark overload.

Someone at play group yesterday told me about a good soft play near by so we might try that this afternoon instead. Apparently they do good coffee which is a winner for me. If she likes it I will try and make it a weekly thing.

TobyLerone · 16/01/2015 13:42

Wow, nature! That's a lot of work. It must be very daunting, especially when pregnant.
We're hoping to.have an extension put on the back and side of the house. Utility room, bigger kitchen, 2nd bathroom and playroom. Also new flooring for the whole house and a completely new bathroom upstairs. And new windows/doors and the garden completely redone.

The Nakd bars are the easiest thing ever!
30g sultanas
60g unsalted cashews
90g dates
1-2 tsp cocoa powder

Blend everything up in a food processor. I did the cashews first because I wanted them a bit finer because M would be having them. Press into a lined tin (I used a loaf tin because I have liners for that and I'm lazy! It filled about half the tin about 10 cm thick.) Chill for half an hour or so to firm up. Cut into bars. Eat!

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 13:51

It is a lot of work, but we knew it would need doing when we bought the house (although hadn't realised I would end up pregnant before we had even officially moved in!). I don't think it will be as bad as I am fearing as I am hoping to get one building company in to do all the building/roofing/flooring/decorating stuff and hopefully one company to fit kitchen and bathrooms. Off to look at some tomorrow to get an idea on price. The house will be wonderful when it is finished and everything (bar re-wire which it didn't need) will be new so we won't have to do anything to it apart from basic maintenance for a long long time. And the location is fab so all worth it.

Toby are you not planning on moving now (it was you thinking about it wasn't it?).

Felix how utterly frustrating for you. Hopefully the soft play will be good and you'll be able to make it to the group next week.

FelixFelix · 16/01/2015 13:58

Ooh lovely, I'll give those bars a go. Thanks Toby.

Snowing heavily again. Someone remind me why I moved to the bastard Yorkshire moors? Grin
