Argh. I typed a massive post and lost it.

I will try again.

Years ago I was flicking thought the Argos catalogue which was the bible of aspiration for a child like me. I was going through noting all the things i would have when I was a grown up when my dad looked over. He started off saying "well, I hope you marry a . . . " and stopped. He went on to say "I hope you get the job that pays for all this!"

Passmethecrisps · 15/11/2014 23:13

I suspect that for the adept parent raising a boy is equally as worrisome as a girl. However, I agree that the world is no more welcoming to women with career ambitions than it used to be. In some respects I feel I have more freedom with p. As an example my mum proudly told me that she had bought p and her cousin the same blue wellies. I wonder had they been pink if she would have felt so comfortable?

Rowingdowntheriver · 16/11/2014 06:27

Argh, just lost a post,

Totally agree with everyone about the mysogyny in our culture today. Objectification of women and glass ceilings for working women have always angered me and now it saddens me too as it feels like we are gong backwards.

Most music videos are appalling, most adverts seem to have some underlying sexism going on in them and just out general culture, I mean why on earth is it ok to have a topless women in the sun still? And why on gods earth were some of our (male) political leaders photographed with a copy of the sun recently supporting some campaign or others of there's.

Also, what's all this about women being sluts if they have a decent and varied sex life? It's only recently that it has dawned on me that that is all part of the same thing. I think I've always felt that I had done something bad when I had a couple of one night stands when I was (much) younger and it only just occurred to me that I have done nothing wrong and how unfair it is to label a women a slut for doing something that is totally acceptable for a man to do.

Oh and, how every newspaper when reporting a story on a women will include her age and, if a tabloid, will also include her hair colour and a descriptive word such as attractive, striking, pretty. NOT RELEVANT!

On a totally different note, pass I am reading JKR's book, Cormoran Strike, that she wrote as Robert Galbraith. It is brilliant, so so so well written and such great characters. It was on the recommendation of some of the Nov 12ers so thank you for that!

I had already read the casual vacancy that she also wrote but, while I appreciate it as a good, well written book, there wasn't a single character in it that I liked so I found it a struggle to enjoy. the story has stuck with me though and I think her social beliefs are similar to mine and she expresses them so well in the book.

Rowingdowntheriver · 16/11/2014 06:29
  • nobody actually called me a slut by the way, it is just so ingrained, or certainly was back then, that I felt it.
Wandathewindfairy · 16/11/2014 07:40

I hated casual vacancy and didn't get v far. I am hoping I enjoy cuckoos calling more as is next on my read list.

Rowingdowntheriver · 16/11/2014 07:50

ah yes wanda that's the name of the book. I totally love it and it is giving me that lovely feeling of looking forward to curling up on the sofa in the evenings and reading a book. Have not had that for a while. Except with all the Alexander McAll Smith books. I love his books and the two series that are set in Edinburgh make me want to move there.

Rowingdowntheriver · 16/11/2014 07:50

Cuckoos calling I mean, not casual vacancy.

MsJupiter · 16/11/2014 08:53

Re: misogyny, I think it's hard to raise either gender if you are a feminist/general right-thinking person. I worry a lot about L's future exposure to porn and lad culture as well as buying into casual misogynistic and patriarchal ideas. I think there are particular worries surrounding raising a girl and it's certainly a harder world to be a woman in than a man, but if you want your son to grow up with the values and confidence to go against the grain in a system that ultimately favours him, you have a tough job on your hands.

Re:books, My mum was talking about the JKR/RG books yesterday, I must read them. I read casual vacancy and while it was flawed it really stayed with me, not just because of the ending. I have been trawling through Game of Thrones for months and it's really annoying me. I fall asleep every few pages and have re-read so it's painfully slow going. Also we have been watching the tv version and got to the end of series 3 before I had finished book 3. All I can say is ShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShock

Wandathewindfairy · 16/11/2014 09:27

I ams eat hung for modern day boarding school stories for my girls. Alas I can't find one. There are some aimed at teens but not the preteen age other than the old faves.

Will have to write one.

Wandathewindfairy · 16/11/2014 10:48

Perhaps I could add in as many typos as I out on here! Obviously I am hunting.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh emoticon

StuntNun · 16/11/2014 11:33

I think we unconsciously absorb our parents attitudes, even if we later consciously decide against them. So IMO the example we set to our children is more important than anything we tell them.

PetiteRaleuse · 16/11/2014 13:59

Ooh yes wanda

Write one! Great idea.

YellowWellies · 16/11/2014 17:28

Does anyone else always think of team QM when Katie Morag comes on!? Wrong archipelago I realise....

PetiteRaleuse · 16/11/2014 17:36

Goodness I literally just googled the show to see where it is filmed, QM very much in mind :o

Wandathewindfairy · 16/11/2014 18:08

Lol, I hadn't thought of that and now I will. And any chance of another series of Shetland this year I wonder, loved mainly for the music and the scenery.

Not sure if I can watch Fall this week as DH is in Brussels and I will be too scared.

Elizadoesdolittle · 16/11/2014 18:38

Back to reality after a very relaxing break. E was a star whilst I was away. No side effects from procedure. Phew. Going to order a chinese takeaway now just to finish off my indulgent weekend Grin

Wandathewindfairy · 16/11/2014 19:53

eliza yum. Enjoy.

Tonight we had pr roast chicken then I squeezed the garlic and lemon that had been inside on the potatoes. Was a bit like heaven.

And sticky toffee pudding.

Has been a great food weekend in the fairy house. Not forgetting Wine

This offsets the pain of two, yes two, soft play sessions that mummy had to endure.

Phew. A very quiet week ahead for me.

Jims · 16/11/2014 20:34

Funnily enough we had the music video conversation here last weekend. After watching various videos on youtube, we decided the spice girls were appropriate to show my 4.5 yr old niece who is into pop videos. And they at least have personalities and only small clothes rather than barely anything at all.

Wandathewindfairy · 17/11/2014 09:32

Morning all.

BigPigLittlePig · 17/11/2014 09:58

Morning wanda.
Nights done, think F has a chest infection, shall see how today goes.

Elizadoesdolittle · 17/11/2014 10:14

bplp I hope poor F is ok.

Well back to the grindstone here. A day of washing, hoovering and tidying here. Going to start sorting out baby stuff this week. I've just realised the new mattress I bought for the moses basket doesn't fit so that has to go back.

Lily311 · 17/11/2014 10:46

bp sympathising. We just went through it last week. O was super clingy and very down. All better now thankfully

BigPigLittlePig · 17/11/2014 11:04

Thanks guys...can't believe it's not yet midday Envy

Bit late to the discussion, but loved reading about peoples gender chat. Dsd regularly makes me Shock with some of the stuff she says/does. There was one occasion when she full on gyrated against dhs leg, aged 5. He was distraught. To counter the girly pink she brings to our house courtesy of her mum, F has got a george pig umbrella for her bday! Very blue, very "boy". Perfect Grin

Pikz · 17/11/2014 13:22

Morning... Or afternoon even Brew

Wandathewindfairy · 17/11/2014 15:37

Hope f is feeling better poor thing.

Freezing this afternoon, we have just had our afternoon constitutional. You don't realise how cold it is outside till you come in.
