Thread to share the newborn news and support each other through the 'eeek what do I do?' When the baby gets home and you stare at it in the car seat and think - help!!

I currently have a small hiccuping person looking slightly puzzled by it all in my arms. She hiccups a lot, more than I remember my other two doing, and it doesn't seem to bother her other than it might interrupt a feed.

Happytimes31 · 24/10/2014 22:52

Fatpony - thank you. I had heard about the crying business from people but I suppose the same thing manifests itself in different ways in different people. It is getting better though and it is still v early days I guess. Fingers crossed it vanishes for both of us soon!

fedupofrainydays · 24/10/2014 22:56

This boy is a machine. Fed all evening. Had 4 oz of expressed now still going... Really would like some sleep now please.

Thanks bump and magic- it's nice to have reassurance :)

I'm currently lying on the sofa with my little man on my chest because he won't settle in his Moses basket. Not sure if it's because he's not comfortable on his back (slightly tilted) or because he just needs cuddles but looking forward to this phase being sorted- I miss being in bed with DH. He'll be doing the 4am onwards shift, when I go up to bed.

When does it get easier?

kittyvet · 24/10/2014 23:17

Hi Everyone, not been keeping up with this thread as been having a tough time. Apologise if these things already covered but could really do will some advice and moral support.
Firstly everything in my downstairs department is pretty grim!
Poor little Laura had got terrible urine scald after my inexperience and generally feeling crap meant I left her nappy on too long/ used wipes in middle of night when she was covered in meconium. Currently using nappy cream after cleaning with water only. Looks slightly better. She hates getting naked so can't do that. Feeling really guilty for being so inept and causing such pain for her.
Finally she has had terrible colic the last 2 days. Completely inconsolable. Burping and farting loads and hardly sleeping. Have given her some infacol today which seems to have helped a bit. Any other ideas to help prevent and treat excessive wind???

YellowWellies · 24/10/2014 23:29

Kitty Lilla is my second and I gave her nappy rash on her first night home. Girl bits are much more difficult than boy bits! To fix it we use fullers earth (cream or powder) or Burt's bees nappy cream. The most important thing is to make sure her bum is totally dry before putting any nappy cream on - or you just make it worse. Use a soft towel or even a hair dryer on warm (not hot) setting.

I hope she sleeps better tonight - its DS 2nd birthday party tomorrow and there are going to be 10 of the buggers!

DS told me he loved me tonight for the first time. As hard as it is, it is worth it Smile .

fatpony · 24/10/2014 23:32

Got a wide awake two week old here. He thinks it's party time!

mrsb87 · 24/10/2014 23:57

Oh my goodness Dylan was on 1 boob for an hour and is now going gunhoe at the other one! Hungry little tyke! He must be sleepy soon though, he's even awake nearly 2 hours.
kitty I haven't got any advice but be reassured that we are all going to make mistakes along the way Smile

MundayCakes85 · 25/10/2014 00:22

DH drunk and asleep on the sofa. Guess there's no help coming my way tonight Sad

fedupofrainydays · 25/10/2014 01:55

Forgot to bring my nipple shield upstairs - ouchy boob.

kitty I also gave ds nappy rash quite early on. Felt guilty but got it cleared up with fullers earth cream and Burt's bees diaper cream (one is upstair and the other downstairs so just put on whichever was nearest!)

It does get easier. All babies are dofference but you will Probably notice it's easier after the 6 wk growth spurt. When in a difficult period / the early days it all feels like an eternity. But it's not. Everything is a phase and your LO will be doing somethjng different next week (hopefully sleeping in their Moses basket!) try and enjoy it (I know that's hard when sleep deprived!) but they don't stay so small for long!

My husband was meant to feed the bubba whilst I expressed. I woke him up, placed bubba in his arms and he went back to sleep.
So I fed bubba and am now expressing. Looks like I won't be sleeping tonight!!

In other news, I went from shivers to hot sweats - they were so bad I thought I had a fever. Feel ok now. #postnatal101

RudyTuesday · 25/10/2014 03:42

Poor baby has been screaming all night. Only quiet when feeding so that's what I've been doing for past 2 hours. Was reading up on colic, think am going to get some infacol tomorrow. I was horrified by my internet research "clears up within a few months". MONTHS? I can't last that long.

Actually had tears from DP tonight due to frustration of it all, was awful to see as he's been so supportive to me.

binkybunny · 25/10/2014 03:48

Rudy infacol seems to be amazing! our first night home consisted of 4 or 5 crib changes from sick and all night screaming, have been using infacol the last few days and she's a lot happier Smile

Just had to wake I for her feed and only managed to get 20ml in her before she slept again. Feel bad as she's supposed to be taking 60+ but not sure how if she's fast asleep. tried stripping, tickling etc but she just slept through. It's DH shift next so hopefully he'll have more luck!

binkybunny · 25/10/2014 03:51

Also, yep to hiccups, she had them at least once of twice a day in my womb and carried on.

Also think I can see the start of nappy rash, getting Burts Bees cream tomorrow, we have Johnsons stuff but read (after buying) it's not great on newborn skin.

YellowWellies · 25/10/2014 04:07

Binky I find Johnsons anything too harsh even on my two year olds skin. Everything they make is like paint stripper - they're wipes are the worst.

Missus noooooo! Hope you get some kip Sad . Hot flushes are normal - part of getting your milk in. Obviously keep an eye on it to make sure it isn't an infection but on its own its normal.

My wonderful DD is a clever little trickster - for weeks we're lucky to get 2+ hours consecutive sleep. Tonight she's just done 3 and I'm painfully grateful. Good skills on lowering Mummy's expectations poppet!!!! Wink Hmm Smile

I totally agree with what Fedup says - if there's anything consistent about babies - its that stuff changes so quickly. So don't despair about painful patterns, in just a few short weeks it will all be so different. So try to enjoy these newborn cuddles.

binkybunny · 25/10/2014 04:14

it's so annoying to find that put about Johnsins, have got all their wash stuff and loads of wipes as it was what all my family used. I love waterwipes though, they were great on the first few reallly sticky poos, the mw's in hospital loved them!

I've just realised on getting back into bed I've soaked the covers my hot flushes are so bad. Boobs started to go down a bit so hoping milk is drying up. I feel awful when she's rooting around my boobs but know I made the right decision for us.

Happytimes31 · 25/10/2014 04:26

Did horrible shivers then sweats too, thank goodness one of you had mentioned the sweats so I knew they were ok, hope they don't last too long though!

fedupofrainydays · 25/10/2014 05:07

R not settling after feeds tonight. I think he's in pain :( I'm really broken!

OP posts:
binkybunny · 25/10/2014 05:37

I am in agony not sure if it's stitches or piles, but I want to cry with the pain. Stitches were fine when mw checked them two days ago, hoping it's not the anusol cream I've put on, anyone else had a burning, stabby pain after using it?

Bump ours says the same - so long as there's not a family history of nut anaphylaxis I wouldn't worry. Ours also contains soy (which my DS) is intolerant to but its OK to use topically.

Binky my episiotomy stitches got really sore as they tightened and healed.

fatpony · 25/10/2014 07:32

Is anyone else failing to get their baby to sleep where they are meant to? Ours will tolerate the bednest for a while but he thrashes around in the space and seems to keep himself awake. Usually aboit 3am in desparation we put him in his bouncer where he sleeps well. Feeling guilty about it...

fedupofrainydays · 25/10/2014 08:06

Yes fatpony. Am knackered today - really rubbish night of feeding, putting down, crying and feeding. Ugh.

binky it shouldn't be really really painful. Have you taken painkillers? I bathed my episiotomy and third degree tear daily in a shallow bath of tea tree and lavender oils. Did wonders. Is the anusol ok to use with stitches?

bunp I worried about the peanut oil. Tried it first in the day so if he had a reaction I could sort it quickly. It was all fine and we have no nut allergy issues in our family anyway

We had a much better night. Its reminded me (now she's 4 weeks) that BF is night and day easier after the 6 week growth spurt. Not long to go!
