we've mostly done shoes in France. got one pair from Startrite that were fine, but next time i went in there were no buckle shoes for boys at all - velcro ones are off before we get out of the shop and i'm not ready to deal with laces yet. so cute french shoes it is.

probably lucky as ds is now a 61/2 so the cuter the better.

going back to the food thing, how much milk are you giving your Junies? ds had a cold and wouldn't have any solids for while, so we got back into the habit of giving him bottles becaues he seemed so sad. He prob has about 20 oz per day now. has everyone else cut milk right down? am wondering if it might help with the solids (although since posting about eating, ds has been doing much better). will add little lummox crab and sweetcorn soup to the Junie recipe book.

2Happy · 28/09/2006 15:37

Crab and sweetcorn coup sounds lovely, I'd like the recipe for me let alone ds, lol!
(and the only boys clarks shoes I can find have ruddy velcro on, policeman picked one up for me this morning in town, I hadn't even noticed him taking it off !)

lummox · 28/09/2006 16:25

You need:
1 pint of chicken stock
1/3 pint water
2 tins crab meat (tuna tin size)
2 tins sweatcorn (twice tuna tin size)
A big onion.
Ginger - about 2 inches long chunk

Heat stock and water
Chop onion v fine and fry it
chop ginger fairly finely. Add half of that to the onion and fry in
add the onion and ginger to the hot stock and water
add about a tin of sweetcorn (or frozen sweetcorn)
add half a tin of crab
whizz all that up, so it's not completely smooth but smoothish
add a little bit of arrowroot dissolved in cold water
add another tin of sweetcorn, the rest of the crab and the rest of the ginger

hmmm - looks quite complicated written down, but is very easy really.

sfxmum · 28/09/2006 16:41

soup sounds nice but no way on earth will i get dh to eat fish. occasionally i force feed him salmon with the argument that its good for dd. i eat fish when i eat out or at my family's

about milk, since she started this bout of teething she wants to be bf all the time, usually i fob her off during the day with cows milk in a cup but at night its another story.
i cant wait for this bit to be over she is really unconfortable with these 5 teeth on the go.
not sure how much she gets a day but i thibk its just under a pint excd. bf

btw has anyone had any luck giving medicine to a child? she screams and screams twists and turns its all very traumatic and no way can i do it during the nght. she is ok (mostly) when we apply gel

bubbaloo · 28/09/2006 17:34

Maybe I should count myself lucky that Oscar has to wear specially made boots.Funnily enough,we went last week to order another pair and this time I actually got a catalogue to browse through and have picked a lovely pair of blue nubuck ones.He has to wait 4 weeks for them to be made so in the meantime,we bought him his first ever pair of "proper" shoes last week and 4 different people commented on them at the toddler group on Tuesday, asking if his feet were ok now.

Medicine is a bit of a pain here-I usually use a syringe or sometimes a spoon(if dh is helping),but ds does tend to spit it out.

On the milk front,ds has milk with his porridge or Weetabix and a beaker of warm milk which he normally drinks before his nap at 9.30am.He then has a bottle before bed which can be anything from 4-8oz's,depending on how much he's eaten during the course of the day.

Probably a daft question but does anyone else's LO fall over on their face every couple of weeks and make their gums/lips bleed?
Ds gets so carried away rushing about hiding(he loves peekaboo),that when he get's up,he charges off and falls flat on his face.He then screams and has a mouth full of blood, although I'm not entirely sure where it's coming from,as he doesn't appear to have cut his lip.
He done the same again today-now about the 5th time it's happened.

lummox · 28/09/2006 18:18

might he have a little mouth ulcer type thing, bubb? ds doesn't do this (although he falls on his face plenty), but i remember a girl at school who did. she once tripped on a mat and there was a lot of blood - she was fine, but the teacher nearly passed out.

sfx - we don't have a problem with medicine as long as it is the full sugar variety. ds can recognise sugar free Calpol from ten paces and will not have it. but the rot your teeth type is fine (i use one of those plastic syringes as it is less messy than a spoon). my SIL puts it in her ds's milk, which seems to work as well.

sfxmum · 28/09/2006 19:20

trib - dh loves the wellies! he thinks they serve a dual purpose stylish(?) and a moving aid for reluctant toddlers

re meds - we use a syringe too but still its a 2 person job, she hates it. this teething business if funny, lots moaning at night, mostly ok during day, like newborns, sooo tiring (why oh why do i want another one?)

bubb no bleeding but plenty of falling

2Happy · 28/09/2006 19:51

Funnily enough ds never has a problem taking calpol, sf or otherwise. Just sups it off the spoon like it was yoghurt.
Thanks for the recipe, Lummox, am going to try it next time I've been shopping. Beanburgers tomorrow! (Though like yours, ds has been eating a bit better this week).
ds has bled from the mouth once, bubbs, but he usually has a bruise or two going on. The other day he was getting me to chase him (he loves it, don't know what I'm going to do when I'm the size of a whale!), squealed in joy to see me coming after him, turned round and ran full tilt into the doorframe . I swear he looks like a battered baby most days

Skyler · 28/09/2006 21:00

Velcro shoes! Why do they make them for the little ones??? They are the only ones that fit dd. I really wanted traditional T bar buckle shoes for dd2. But I had to have trendy pink ones with sparkly bits on. I could have cried. In fact I nearly did. The ones now are a bit better but still no t bar . I am a saddo though and love traditional stuff for my babies (dungarees and babygros for dd2 here still).

Skyler · 28/09/2006 21:07

Both dd's love their medicine tho I do use a syringe. DD2 is now sporting a big scratch all the way down one side of her face and a bite mark on the other side. Both from dd1. It is so unlike her. The scratch was the result of a hit in anger as dd2 took her jigsaw piece for the 50th time and the bite was dd1 pretending to be the big bad wolf and 'I was eating her all up Mummy' . She was in serious trouble. She is becoming a bit of a madam now she is mixing with older children at nursery, although she is still totally gorgeous and loved to bits of course. She has her first 'playdate' (I hate that phrase) tomorrow with a friend of hers from nursery. She can't wait and I am petrified. The friends Mum is picking her up from nursery and I have only left her with friends a handful of times before because of moving and being overseas...... She will love it.
Lummox - V impressed with the soup. Will never make it though . I love fish but only trust myself to cook salmon or tuna from a can.

Skyler · 28/09/2006 21:17

SFX - I love my Duo boots. They are so comfortable and look great. I had LOTS of compliments on them when I first got them last year. I have been looking for boots again this year and again they are ALL wellingtons on me and so I am going to order another pair in black this time. DH is paying for my birthday (was 30 this year!). Which ones are you looking at getting?

bubbaloo · 28/09/2006 21:36

2Happy-Ds is also covered in bruises. At the moment he has them all over his legs, one on his forehead,on his bottom and even one on the sole of his foot.
He loves being chased and us jumping out on him going "Boo",which is quite funny as it seems to scare him, make him jump and then you get a fit of giggles as a delayed reaction a few seconds later. He is as nutty as a fruitcake, but gorgeous at the same time...of course.

JonahB · 28/09/2006 22:19

SFX, DS LOVES all things medicine. We only give it him occasionally, but when we do, he really winges when it goes back in the drawer, especially the calpol gum gel. If its medicine, he sits there with his mouth open, like a baby bird!!!

Bubb, DS has cut his mouth about 3 times. Never that much blood though, just a few drops. Usually from banging or falling into something wooden . Oh and bruises everywhere. I?m hoping this is normal!!!

sfxmum · 28/09/2006 22:28

think my daughter takes after me meds no unless last resort, neddle oh ok then and i would like to look too

skyler not sure which ones yet was thinking dark brown

dd only settled at 9.50 toda so so unusual

Skyler · 29/09/2006 13:42

DD2 had her MMR today and I cried. Was crying because of dd1's playdate and not picking her up from nursery myself. What a saddo I am. Lovely HV was concerned but I reassured her that I was being silly and dh has been away for two weeks and I have my period. Crap day. Dd2 was fine, a little shocked but all over quickly. She is such a poppet. She then charmed all the old ladies in the Co-op before falling asleep in the car so I was able to clean the bathrooms.
Hope you are all well.
SFX - I have the Jerez in brown. Love them.

teabelly · 29/09/2006 13:57

Afternoon ladies

Hello to Skyler/Nabs/Mandy lovely to see old faces again - just wish I had the time to catch up more often

Have skim read again and nearly spat my tea across the office with all the poo annecdotes DD hasn't done anything too awful yet on that front recently, although we've had our share of explosive poos in the past, and like you SFX, plenty of scooping from the bath water!

Food - DD is very hit and miss, sometimes eats for england, sometimes not interested. But we have very definite tastes, and know what we like and don't! Unforunately for her she has a very stubborn mummy who refuses to get something else if it's food she's had before and liked, so now we have alot of stand-off's and mouths firmly clamped shut going on

Medicine - we use the dispenser thingy from the liquid nurofen - she loves it, and regularly takes it from the draw and sucks on it when empty - god I hope we're not raising a hypocondriac

Beds - DS (and now DD) had a cot bed, and we took it to a bed with a bed guard when he was about 2. Pros - you don't have to get up to them in the night as they can just come straight to you...cons - you don't have to get up to them in the night as they can just come straight to you

Mrs W - how's your DS1 doing at school, my DS loves it so far, especially the packed lunches. I was so pleased he was eating everything, even the carrot sticks, until he let slip that Cameron (best friend) eats those whilst he 'shares' Cams crisps!

Only 40 mins to go and then it's home...well ok not home exactly..pick up DD from MIL then go to pick up DS from school, then a quick trip to Morrison's and then home 5 mins before DH walks in from work so I'd better get on and stop playing on here...or then again maybe a quick cup of tea, a bickie, and then maybe some work... Hope you all have a good weekend, x

teabelly · 29/09/2006 13:59

Oh Skyler, x-posts there (I'm a very slow typist ...my nanna would call you a soppy date . Glad the jab was soon forgotton - hope your day gets better

2Happy · 29/09/2006 15:52

I am pleased to report.........

...........beanburger success!

lummox · 29/09/2006 15:53

yay. wish me luck with the tuna pasta!

ds has had most of a croissant this afternoon as a supermarket bribe, so i'm not going to hold my breath.

sfxmum · 29/09/2006 16:06

good to hear 2happy best of luck lummox

dd seems better today at least slept better last night, alas i did not!
today she has a super lazy mum who can't be arsed going to shop for fresh food, have grocery order being delivered tomorrow, at least thats my excuse for fish and chips (oven baked)
oh what the hell am having a day a la skyler, minus tears, so far anywayPMT PMT

skyler - like those too but do they go with a dress?

tea - good that your young man is doing well at school bet its a relief.

Skyler · 29/09/2006 20:02

Hello Tea [waves]
SFX - Hmm. They are more casual but with the buckle taken off I would wear them with a longer dress. Wear them with all casual skirts and denim and cropped jeans (with no gap IYKWIM). They actually go oddly well with my posh Monsoon dress I bought for all the wedding this year. It is floaty floral material and I think they look good together in a hippy sort of way.
The black boots I am planning on getting will be more formal though. More elegant or lady-like as my Mum would say.

Skyler · 29/09/2006 20:06

2 happy - Yay for the beanburgers.
I have got tougher with dd2 now. Like Tea if she ate it before and liked it she will again.....She def goes through phases though where she eats loads then nothing. Frustrating but having been there with dd1 thankfully not worrying. Day has got better. Got all my jobs done, dd1 had a wonderful afternoon and I baked an apple cake. DD2 hasn't had a temperature and there isn't even a red lump where she had her jab so fingers crossed we will have limited side effects. .

sfxmum · 29/09/2006 20:28

skyler -i am inclined toward thw toledo in brown leather, but i don't think there is a chance of me becoming a lady

dd has been eating much better today too, she has this thing when dh is around of poiting to the floor saying 'oh whats this' 'floor' then dropping the food i can see dh turning all shades of purple...

something quite funny happened at home last night but dh warned me that i better not tell on mumsnet or else...but i want to it was like a bawdy french farcemixed with something out of the holistic detective agency sorry for evilness

i need wine mow. ill advised but i need it must gp run in the morning too.

sfxmum · 29/09/2006 20:30

GO nothing to do with gp
skyler - dd had her MMR a few weeks back she was fine until a week later when she was a bit off and had a slight temperature but no rash, hope all goes well

Skyler · 29/09/2006 22:16

Tell tell tell....
