Hi all,

Well, going back to work was tough;lots of new people and expressing is a bit of a chore. It's quite scary how quickly it all came back to me once I was there though - feel like I've not been away. Not easy leaving DS though - especially as 3 nights, he was in bed by the time I got home so didn't really get to see him (apart from feeding him during the night) till the next morning

On the bright side, DH has realised how hard it is staying at home and he has now discovered that I didn't just sit and play with DS all day while fairies appeared to do the cooking, cleaning, washing etc!

DS is doing fab - he's got 3 teeth on their way through - can see them through the gums but not quite made their way out! doesn't seem to bother him too much but he does like biting anything that goes near his mouth. Still not weaned but he did get a bit of cauliflower off my plate yesterday - didn't really eat it but he loved sucking it and rubbing his gums on it! Oh, and I weighed him yesterday too as my mum has been pestering me for a weight (I used the very high-tech method of standing on bathroom scales holding him then without him and working out the difference) so he is approx 18lbs! I don't know how he puts on so much weight - he seems to bring up most of his feeds and his nappies are ALWAYS full.. Who knows but my milk is obviously doing him good! LOL

plama · 17/10/2006 21:12

Well w've done it and have given DD2 some food. She loved it . Have bought loads of bibs and have done a mammoth puree session. I quite fancy trying the baby led weaning when she's about 6 months - how are other people finding it?
She got her 3rd lot of jabs last week and had to have 3 jabs - the usual 2 plus the new pneumococcal one.
I have just bought a really cute furry hat mittens and boottee set for my friend's new baby girl today. I'll have to get her on mumsnet too.

MandyBOO · 17/10/2006 22:43

Hi all - not posted here for ages but been catching up!

Tom is now 23 weeks old, weighs 18lbs and is sleeping ok ish (last night was a mare so not saying too much!!)

HAve not started to wean yet but am interested in BLW - might try a bit of puree first though.

He isnt sitting up yet but is starting to crawl! [scared emoticon]. Hes not really moving as such but he his definitely wanting to get going!

No teeth but plenty of teething aches and pains!

DD (almost 4) adores him and entertains him loads - he saves all his giggles and smiles for her and she loves the fact that she makes his laugh. I will have to remember that when they hate each other is a few years time!!

ANyway, hope you are all well and will post again soon

squidgeymiller · 18/10/2006 10:46

Hi all, DD doing well and loving her food too. Also had a mammoth pureeing session at the weekend, now have the freezer stocked with little cubes of: apple, pear, butternut squash, sweet potato and Swede.

Know how you feel MandyBOO - DD is standing quite a lot and has recently started sitting on her own. The really scary thing is that she's trying to stand up on her own from sitting already. scared the bjeesus out of me when she stood herself up and launched herself at the toys at the other end of the bath (I bath with her at the mo) the other day - resulted in me trying to catch a very slippery baby before she ended up head first in the water . All was fine but shocked me - was the first time she's done it and really wasn't expecting it!!

Hope all are well!

hockeymum · 19/10/2006 12:47

wow, sitting and trying to stand already squidgy! Your lo will keep you on your toes soon!

I can't believe that Theo will be 6 months old on friday - it has gone so quickly. I'm just really enjoying him, he's such a poppet, so content. DD was always trying to do something and cross that she couldn't and cross if I wasnt holding her all the time. Whereas he is just content to kick around on his playmat dribbling everywhere batting his toys around. I'm enjoying it while it lasts!

Blimey squidgey, thats good going!!! Dylan is rolling over, but can't get back yet and is trying to sit up. Still no teeth but plenty of moaning, dribbling and chewing on whatever he can get his hands on! he loves his veggies and dh loves the nappies even more

squidgeymiller · 19/10/2006 20:17

don't get me wrong - when I say she's standing quite a lot, I mean with support (ie if I sit on the floor she'll stand quite happily in front of me, as long as I'm there to catch her), and going from sitting to standing has only happened a couple of times and with lots of grunts etc beforehand, it's obviously a lot easier in the bath so it was the 1st time it happened. She's tried a couple of times since but hasn't quite managed it, which has frustrated her greatly!

Had a nightmare day today - she really didn't know what she wanted and she's been really cross and upset. Has completely worn me out - she was hungry but refusing to eat, tired but refusing to sleep, wanted a toy but as soon as I got it for her she threw it away and then cried for it. Hope it's just been a bad day and nothing more - can't face another day like this any time soon!!

SAHMof1 · 19/10/2006 20:47

Hi all (long post to follow ? sorry). I am now full-time SAHM (since this Monday) and soooo busy! I haven?t stopped! DS doing well - weaning and loving it. Rolling over lots but cannot/will not co-ordinate legs and arms for crawling, so ends up turning around on his tum in a clockwise (always clockwise!?!) circle. Much prefers standing (supported, obviously!). Will hold up his arms for ?up? and knows baby signing/words for ?yum yum? (food), ?milk? (my boob) and ?drink? (his bottle). If I forget to say ?milk? when going to b-fed him, he bites (he has two very sharp, well-established front teeth). The Swindon Real Nappy Network seems to be getting somewhere, which is gratifying and I still have house-guests (has been non-stop for the last 7 weeks). Can?t wait for it to be the 3 of us again!

Squidgeymiller, my DS has also taken an unexpected dunking in the bath! He decided to try and roll over, and I had to fish him out spluttering. He was under nanoseconds, but it shocked me so much I ended his bath rather quickly, even though he didn?t seem fazed by it at all!

Have done some cooking/freezing, but have mostly been cooking one portion of a different veg. at a time to see if he likes it/reacts to it. Wouldn?t want to cook a batch that ultimately gets wasted. Plan to do a good cook-up for both DS and us, so when we don?t feel like cooking, we have ready-meals there for ourselves too (a bit like we did before DS was born).

Sorry it?s such a long one, but most of my friends don?t have babies, so I?ve got to watch out for becoming a baby-bore! Mind you, one friend is getting married next December, and has asked me to be a bridesmaid.

evilstepmom · 20/10/2006 14:43

a tooth!a tooth has appeared!bless her little red cheeks. mummy in state of shock that her baby is growing up, not helped by mil saying "well u'll have to stop breastfeeding now, she'll only bite u." she wont will she?! (dd that is not mil!)good mind to keep up the bf til she is 10 just to spite mil. bitty anybody?!
weaning wise, banana, pear and carrot goes down a treat (not all together!), thinking of trying beetroot today...!!!not had time to read thread but hope all are well n good xx

sniff · 20/10/2006 17:50

every one said that to me too when dd got her teeth I am more determined now to breast feed just to irritate MIL and I have only been bitten twice!!

luckymummy2sophie · 20/10/2006 19:48

SAHMof1, Swindon you say? I live in Herts now but grew up in Highworth, do you know it? Congratulations on being bridesmaid. I'm 32 and have yet to be a bridesmaid. Not that I'm bitter . I'm holding out for my sis, she's promised me that me and dd can be bridesmaids.

DD is still just on milk, very content with that so I'm not weaning yet tho have started to make up some purees for freezer.
She is now a BIG girl and in her pushchair rather than the carrycot of her pram. She loves it, being able to see what's going on, and I can chat to her more. We walk 2-4 miles a day. The weight is sloooooowly coming off (god it's a struggle!!!) That's my weight btw, not dd's !!
She is desperatley trying to crawl, can manage a few inches backwards! Not sitting yet, has been rolling since 3 mths old. Loves to stand (supported!)
I've booked onto a babysign class for Nov.

dd has also started going to the CM for an hour a week to settle in. It's been OK actually. Back to work in Jan, 21 hrs a week (nice!)

hotpot · 21/10/2006 16:24

Hello all, I have only just found this thread and have ds1 aged 3 1/4 and ds2 born 19th May. I am a SAHM in Leeds area.

My ds2 can roll and is getting there with regard to balance and sitting up. I started weaning him on advice of paediatrician as he was dropping weight with his reflux and needed something to help keep the milk in his tummy, so far I have given him potato, sweet potato and butternut squash. My community nurse (fab lady) has advised only 3 veg until he 6 months. It was all very different with ds1 who was also weaned at 17 weeks due to relux but he wasn't screaming in pain and I was a naive, listen to the HV what she says is gospel kinda girl

louismummy my ds2 also has severe reflux both visible and silent, did thickened formula, infant gaviscon to no avail then saw paediatrician who put him on Enfamil AR (anti-reflux) a pharmacy only formula that thickens on contact with gastic acid so you can use a normal teat on a bottle. I read that you are BF and trying to change over to a bottle. Obviously this would only help you if you get to bottle feed.

I know you have probably tried everything and as I have only just found this thread I don't know the past but have you tried someone else giving your son the bottle as he expects breastmilk from you? Or try a cup? My friend never got her daughter to take a bottle but a tommee tippee cup, no valve.

Good luck with the haberman!

louismummy · 21/10/2006 20:24

Thanks for the tips hotpot. have had my mum here today trying to get ds to take bottle/ cup but in 15 hours he took about 2oz!!! and some swet potato. i'm exhausted cause i now have a tummy bug on top of all this...other than that ds has 3 teeth and kind of nibbles at my boobs.. really fed up of feeding mostly because i'm up usually 3 times a night from 10-7 hmmm ds1 slept from10.30 -7 from 14 weeks..... sorry having a big moan.

asur · 22/10/2006 20:18

Welcome hotpot!
DS has got 2 teeth! He also finds the word 'teeth' very funny and laughs anytime someone asks him about them Still not weaned but my mum babysat on Friday and gave him a carrot (cooked and cut into sticks, not whole!) He liked it but I was kind of annoyed with my mum. I don't know why she is so desperate to give him solids - he's totally happy with his milk. Mums, eh?!

DS is also working on sitting on his own - he's not quite got the balance, especially when he smiles, for some reason that makes him fall backwards! He's another one who would much rather stand up than sit down - trying to grow up WAY too fast!

Louismummy - sorry to hear about your probs with feeding... DS is up all night too and I know how exhausting it is. He is up every 2-3hrs for feeds. I'm back working full time now too so I'm shattered! DH let me have a long lie this morning though - he took DS out for a walk once he woke up and had been fed then brought him back to me for his next feed! Amazing how enjoyable a little quiet sleep can be! I'm very of the other mums who's babies sleep right through!

Hope all is well with everyone else.

louismummy · 22/10/2006 20:39

Progress! since denying him food since 1.30 am tea time he eventually caved.... i do feel relieved and sad though.he's had 15oz since then until he went to bed... now i need to get more haberman bottles trust him they cost about £15 each. i don't want to think that i won't ever feed him again... but i can't risk it for a few days...

BrummieMomInMerthyr · 22/10/2006 21:21

Hi Hotpot!

We're still waiting for teeth, but Dylan's getting quite loose, smelly nappies, his bum is quite red and he has had a really touchy feely day today! Perhaps they are finally coming
Hope things get better for you louismummy, sounds like you are winning though, must be awful.

sniff · 23/10/2006 07:54

Hi I fed Grace recently with a bad stomach bug she was absolutly fine I was worried she would get it but I couldnt get her to take a bottle and was that sick I gave up trying none of mine would ever take a bottle but they would take the avent soft spouts if this is any help I hope you feel better soon

Grace still wakes in the night too she has only slept through about 5 times since birth and I was up all night checking she was ok!!!!!

evilstepmom · 23/10/2006 13:47

afternoon peeps. greedy baby wolfing down food at a rate of knots but no green purees!spits them out excorcist style which is oh so pretty. not. am bit worried about her getting enough water - mixing as much as i can into her food to avoid baby constipation! have got the smallest baby cup there is but she spits out water and looks disgusted. dh thinks the cup is the problem and reckons she needs a bottle, but i reckon it is the taste of water (?!!)??
am really not anxious to go to bottles as will have mil waving formula at me. also do not want to give baby juices as dont want dd to get a taste for them.
oh stubborn evilstepmom!!!
any suggestions? hope all ok

squidgeymiller · 23/10/2006 14:17

Hi all, welcome hotpot!

Sorry you're having difficulties louismummy, it must be a nightmare.

evilstepmom - I was having similar issue with dd and water. I've did notice that if I had water in a bottle for me (eg evian etc) dd reached out for it and opened her mouth. She'd quite happily take some and then spit it out (according to hv she would still have swallowed some of the water). She was usually sick after water though, so I stopped trying to give her water. I eventually gave in and have given her Hipp organic juices as they are just fruit juice and mineral water, so I don't feel so bad. I'm using a vital baby training cup (has a lip and 2 holes above it to limit the flow, but does let the juice flow into her mouth like a cup, rather than sucking from a bottle). She couldn't get the hang of sucking from a spout (kept trying to chew it and then shuddering at the horrid squeaking it made - lol ) and is much happier with the cup, which is good in a way but it means that I have to help her hold it still at the mo, otherwise it goes everywhere!! She still spits some of the juice out but she seems to really enjoy it and is less sick than with water (although she IS still a bit sick).

Funniest thing recently is dd falling asleep while I was trying to feed her - she was still hungry so was trying to stay awake to take mouthfulls but eventually she lost the battle and started snoring mid-mouthfull - Classy!

Hope all are well, and enjoying the nice weather while it lasts (is pretty sunny here, but I can see big black clouds on the horizon, so sure it won't last long!).

Has anyone bought a travel cot yet and if so how are you finding it? We've been using dd's pram carrycot until now but she's really getting too big for it. Not sure if it's worth spending loads of money for all the gadgets - will we really use them - or just get a decent sturdy looking basic one??? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

BrummieMomInMerthyr · 23/10/2006 15:25

Squidgey, i was having probs getting ds to drink from a cup, think i'll give the vital cup a go!! Ta for that i am giving him hipp juices aswell, water just will not do!! think its too bland after starting to wean.
We have got a travel cot, forgot what make it is though !!! It has been an absolute god send since ds out of moses basket, and didn't have a carry cot, with going to see my mom and dad and holiday etc. The only thing is it absolutely STINKS! tried everything to get rid of it, it's like stale wee, but promise it isn't MIL bought it so i didn't have a say in type etc i'd go and give them a sniff first before you buy, but def get one if you visit alot like me!

luckymummy2sophie · 23/10/2006 16:46

squidgymiller

We got given a travel cot from dh'd sister, it's a Graco one. It's one of the ones that just kind of 'pops up' (yes, I am still talking about a travel cot!). I am glad we have it as dd was too small for her carrycot within about 8 weeks. She used in on hols and when we go and stay at my parents. I am planning to also use it (not all the time, just occasionally) as a playpen when she is mobile.
I think they are a good investment. And ours doesn't stink of wee!!

hotpot · 23/10/2006 20:02

Hey Squidgy we bought a travel cot for ds1 who is now 3 and it is fab, mothercares own with a bassinette - although you may be on the cusp of not needing it for your wee one now if you are planning any future babies then I would recommend it.

You don't need an all singing rocking buzzing thing although mine does have a changing mat that flips over the top, but that wasn't top of my priority list

My ds2 doesn't sleep through the night either, because of the whole reflux thing it was good to have him drink 6oz at 3am but now that he is loving his special milk he has chunked the weight on (getting him weighed next week I feel a coming on) I am cutting back his 3am feed to now 2oz and he then drinks water.

He LOVES water, used to drink 2 full bottles a day, yes I know I should be pleased but it was to take the acid out of his throat I have cut him back to about 1 9oz bottle.

Evilstepmum -have you tried mixing a very small amount of say broccoli with loads of potato to sweeten the taste? If they take it then you can gradually increase the quantity. Breastmilk and formula are very sweet tasting and most greens are vile!!!

A big thank you to all for welcoming me too

louismummy · 23/10/2006 22:04

get the longest travel cot possible. because my ds1 has grown out of his but he's still not in a bed aged2. they are all dead heavy. so we have 'borrowed' my sis's travel cot which is 10cm longer. hth

hockeymum · 23/10/2006 22:33

squidgy - I'll second hotpot's recommendation for the mothercare bassinet one if you plan on having any more. Both DD and DS have loved it, although not enjoyed the travel cot so much once the bassinet bit removed, all travel cots are just too low, they kill your back getting them in and out and are heavy and useless - but what else can you do? Go with one you like but dont bother with the vibrating or toy bar ones unless you plan to use them a lot and your baby really cares about those things
