PurplePidjin · 24/02/2014 13:26

Oh yeah, the stroke story. While R is at my mum's and I've got my feet up...

Christmas 2012, we do the usual of seeing my family for Christmas Eve dinner then popping for breakfast on Christmas morning for presents. Car full of stuff - no room for travel cot or buggy, small car! - so 3 days of clothes, nappies (cloth) etc. R 5 weeks old so plans to stop and check him half way into the 2 hour journey blah blah. Drove up to MILs to stay in the spare room of her new house, she completed the weekend I went into labour (38 weeks) so boxes everywhere, no curtains up etc - standard new house chaos. We had a lovely Christmas, then left mid morning on the 27th to visit R's godfather and DF's god daughter (his dd) and their family about an hour on from the ILs. Stopped into SIL's about a mile away from MIL's to say goodbye to her and the dn's. DF said he had a headache so SIL told him where they were. He came back into the room to tell us he couldn't pick them up. His face had drooped down the left side, his left hand was limp and he was shuffling and couldn't walk properly. His voice was really really quiet and a little bit slurred and he was struggling to get the words out, repeating himself. The kids noticed (7 and 5 at the time) and seemed worried so SIL and I kept everything calm and I told df we should get him looked over on the way to our friends house and bundled him into the car. It didn't occur to me to call an ambulance even though I'd guessed exactly what was happening.

DF managed to direct me to the nearest hospital, about 25 minutes away. Luckily R was calm in his car seat for once, he hated it to start with. I sent DF in while I parked and got R out, met him in the waiting room. He'd staggered to a seat so I went to queue. R started squeaking from his seat so I went to get him, that got the attention of the receptionists who thought I was there for him so I said no, it's my partner, I think he's having a stroke. They must've hit the panic button because he was rushed straight through while I was giving details and pacifying R. There wasn't room for us to go through immediately and they whipped DF off for a CT scan(?) asap so I was taken to a sofa and brought a cup of tea so I could feed R. The CT scan showed that it was BP not a clot so the ambulance waiting to take him to the specialist hospital was cancelled and we hung around the A+E ward till they found a bed on the Stroke unit. Settled him in there then I got sent home, well, back to MIL's.

He was in for a week, learning how to walk, eat and talk again then discharged as a Virtual In Patient to our local hospital which at least meant he was home - we had daily visits from OT, SALT, Physio etc and weekly with the bp nurse while they got his meds established. That went on for about 8 weeks, then he was discharged. It's taken a year to get any further movement on rehab, although it is now happening thankfully.

Huge epic post, sorry Blush

ValiumQueen · 24/02/2014 13:46

I remember it well from the nappy board PP. Didn't you lock everyone out of the house too? That is the bit I remember most clearly as you were distraught.

Sophiathesnowfairy · 24/02/2014 13:50

Is he getting the rehab he needs where he is now then pp ?

Fuel injector has gone on car. Has to be done by a ford dealer, nearest of which is 30 odd miles away. Should be covered by warrenty as car is only 2 years old, but should I have a piece of paper for the warrenty or is it just assumed as car is registered 2011 and all new ford cars come with 3 year warrenty

Lily311 · 24/02/2014 13:56

That sounds awful pp. Must have been to deal with it with such a tiny baby.

sophia if you adopt me and O, I take it over ;).
O seems to be in better mood, although might be still the painkillers. Going for a walk shortly.

ChasingDaisy · 24/02/2014 13:58

Zamboni · 24/02/2014 14:02

Cant believe this is my first post on the not-so-new fred but now marking my place with a very quick woooooooooooooo-haaaaaaaaaaaa for flouncy.

YellowWellies · 24/02/2014 14:07

Pidj my Dad calls fate the 'shit fairy' and reckons that everyone has one or two life defining events that stay with them forever and shape who they are and which no matter how far you travel will always stay with you in some shape or form. For me it was the death of my Ma as a teenager and being called out of sixth form to go and ID her body. I hope IYSWIM that this was yours as you really don't deserve any more droppings from the 'shit fairy'. Such a lot to cope with with a 5 week old. I don't think I was even managing to cook tea or do the washing up at this stage with J and you had that to deal with Sad.

Chasing good luck for the job interview. .

Right I'm away to the MW. Excited! And the sun is shining too. Huzzah it was pissing it down at brekkie.

I hope the bear is ok today he was vair tearful at drop off, grabbing my hand and trying to lead me off to his favourite toys so I could stay with him and play. I know he loves nursery as he grins when we get there and claps and laughs excitedly when I mention we're going to see his keyworker, and he is always having a great time when I pick him up. But the gap from his Wednesday session to his Monday session is so long I think maybe he gets out of practice but I really don't want him in day care any longer than this and I just can't get as much done in say four half days as I could in two full days.... poor wee sausage Sad.

PetiteRaleuse · 24/02/2014 14:17

Pidj no idea how you dealt with all that with a 5wo Flowers

Sophiathesnowfairy · 24/02/2014 14:17

Good luck for the job interview chasing, midwife yw

ValiumQueen · 24/02/2014 14:19

Ikea have killed Expedit

Sophiathesnowfairy · 24/02/2014 14:22

They can not do my car till next Wednesday. They have no available courtesy cars. I am stranded. Nearest shop nearly 2 miles away. No toddlers, no family group, no nothing. Let's just hope DH is ok to take and pick the boys to nursery tomorrow.

Sophiathesnowfairy · 24/02/2014 14:22

Whaaaaat. That just makes it all worse vq

PetiteRaleuse · 24/02/2014 14:33

Why? I thought everyone had Expedit stuff in their house? Maybe that's the problem. Are they giving a reason for this madness?

Sophiathesnowfairy · 24/02/2014 14:38

Where did you find that out anyway vq?

Sophiathesnowfairy · 24/02/2014 14:50

Just in the knicker of time have I realised that the sure start woman is coming to see me at 4pm. Just enough time to clear up and stop weeping into my wheaten scones of which I have just had about 3 and pull myself together.

PetiteRaleuse · 24/02/2014 15:04

Ooh this may be interesting for those of you with Kindles: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/prime/pipeline/landing?ie=UTF8&primeCampaignId=preLaunchPVDEUK&ref=GTOLearnMorepreannounce
