March 2013 - time to wrap them all up in tinsel

Old thread here.

worse we're like Plonky on the timings - we keep mealtimes and milktimes separate. I spotted something in Evil Baby Whisperer that suggested around this age milk should be at the time you'd give a snack. Thinking about it, that's pretty much what we do - milk at the crack of dawn, 11am, 3pm and bedtime, food at 9am, 1pm and 5pm. It seems to work, and Fartypants is definitely in the process of reducing milk herself. Those middle two feeds, she's having about four ounces now.

How is the worselet on mush? Does she show any preferences? If we were sticking with baby led weaning we'd be getting absolutely nowhere. Savoury mushes, she'll try a mouthful then get distracted by the cat. Fruit mushes, she practically inhales. For a reduced stress option, can I suggest getting yourself to Asda? They've a hell of a range of cheap fruity mushes, and then at least you're not having to throw away purees you've spent hours lovingly creating.

Incidentally, six month old Molly may love her porridge, but all that means is that Molly's a total weirdo - porridge is vile. It's weetabix all the way round here, with mashed banana in.

eco hang in there, it does get better. How long until 37 weeks for you?

I am thanking my heathen gods we don't have crawling yet. Nappy changes with rolling are bad enough. Especially when it's a particularly horrific one.

Pud oh no. Get well soon, both of you.

We were having a great day until my monumental parenting fail kind of scuppered things. Note to self, tell DH if the worselet has just had a full bottle of milk before handing her over to his care. Transpires high speed crawling chases round the sofa on a full stomach are not a good idea. We've just had a pretty impressive up chuck all over me, her, her sleeping bag, the kitchen floor, in fact everything. Nice.

Stormy tracksuits are tres chic. Allegedly. We have a particularly smart Popeye one in grey that is patently designed for a boy. Please don't tell dd her parents lack taste. It will scar her for life.

Night all. Sleep well babies, and parents.

BettyOff · 04/02/2014 12:04

Glad you're getting it sorted Plonk, sniffing out the rip-off merchants is essential!

Pud I hope you're both better soon! sounds rubbish!

Wors I'm glad you're getting better sleep! that sounds like a fab night! Long may it continue.

We on the other hand still have awful sleep and no sign of improvement but I'm so close to going back to work now that I can't be arsed to spend nights awake battling to make it better only for the whole routine to change and ruin it! Other than that though she's very happy at the moment, especially when she's speed crawling or cruising or opening and emptying bags/cupboards/drawers/anything! DH is on call for the next 7 days so it's a solo parenting week and I think a lot of caffeine is going to be required.

BettyOff · 04/02/2014 12:08

Gerry I hope you're feeling better too!

worsestershiresauce · 04/02/2014 19:49

I think we may have the beginnings of D&V. I've gone off nursery. DD gets a new illness every session Sad.

ecofreckle · 04/02/2014 20:16

right, what can we do to boost our immunity? These babies have sucked our immune systems dry and with lack of sleep too I guess we're all vulnerable to the nursery germs. Rubbish! Sorry pud, gerry, plonk and worse that you are recent casualties. No fun at all. I guess each time they catch something their little bodies are getting stronger and stronger. Not that that's any consolation when your head is down the toilet. May it all pass quickly.

Betty when is your return to work day? Good luck with solo parenting. Day one nearly done! Smile

It's all about words that mean nothing to me here. It's been 'peekoo peekoo peeko' for days now and now it's 'da! da! da!' Not dada. just da.

We have a third viewing on our house tomorrow. They seem keen. They also come at dinner/bed time so it's a bit of a bloody faff. Can't complain though. We had a brave mum and baby trip into the city for a few hours today. Not something I've done since she was quite small. She coped and I got three new pairs of jeans and three new tops. The dregs of the sales. I was 'just passing' jojo too so ecobaby may have a new outfit too Smile nothing interesting to say but did just want to say hello and get better all Thanks

ecofreckle · 04/02/2014 20:24

Google says plenty of multi coloured veg, vitamin d, probiotics, yoga/meditation and less sugar is the key to increased levels of immunity. Easy! We've all got time for yoga right? Grin

BettyOff · 04/02/2014 20:46

I'm doing a downward facing dog as I type Eco.

ecofreckle · 04/02/2014 20:49

It's gerrybaby that's the downward facing dog pro Grin

Plonkysaurus · 04/02/2014 20:52

Ha Eco yoga? Pfft.

I read on mn that the first six months of nursery are the shittest for illness. after that our small people should be nicely robust. It's rubbish at the time, but can you imagine a 3 year old having to go through the bugs etc? I'd rather get it out the way in a nicely controlled way.

Although today's illness is brought to you by food poisoning. Me and dp. DS had a disgusting nappy this morning but he's right as rain. Sadly I have to keep him off nursery tomorrow too because of their 48 hr rule. So today ive been a top parent. DS has eaten 2 Heinz biscotti (organic!) 1 and1/2 crumpets, about 8 rice cakes and a handful of raspberries.

How is it with you, Worse?

We have lots of new sounds too, Eco. I think the language wires are connecting - if we give him a toy he says aah, and earlier I asked him to pass me a book, and he did! I

ecofreckle · 04/02/2014 20:55

plonky you hadn't been sampling menus from potential caterers had you?! And, that diet sounds entirely reasonable. Lucky to get that much variety when you're poorly. I think ecobaby lived off of banana and rich tea biscuits a couple of weekends ago Blush

ecofreckle · 05/02/2014 08:04

I feel like a cat who has enjoyed salmon for dinner and who is now enjoying a cuddle on its owners lap. Ecobaby slept from 1945 to 0530. Admittedly I've been awake since then as she's full of beans but hey it feels fine. I do half wonder if it had anything to do with the wind howling through our slightly open window and making a racket, thus drowning out some ecobaby noise Hmm
Yummy, Shattered and Betty there is hope for us yet. How were your nights? And how are the poorly mummy/baby combos?

yummychocolate · 05/02/2014 08:32

eco that sounds great. Well done ecobaby. Do what you did last night tonight. I wish that is how it worked.

Last night was awful. He woke up countless times, refused calpol and teething granuals. He wet through too so needed a change. He is sleeping now but I have to wake him as I have opticians appointment. Actually he is waking as I type.

How are the poorly babies and mummies?

worsestershiresauce · 05/02/2014 09:01

All is not well here. Worselet is red eyed, fractious, and although obviously hungry is gagging and bringing up anything other than dry crackers. Her temperature is slightly up, but not fever level.

Well done Ecobaby!

StormyBrid · 05/02/2014 11:59

It's still snot city here too. I suspect Tuesday morning baby group is to blame, so hopefully DD's immune system won't have too much of a shock when she starts nursery.

OP posts:
Plonkysaurus · 05/02/2014 12:26

I'm attempting to get some work done. Stupid, I know. DP hasn't even gone to work today, and DS isn't allowed back to nursery until tomorrow. It is so hard to concentrate but I feel like I need to press on for a couple of hours at least, if only to help my mental state.

Worse is she big enough to point at a bowl now? We found that was a major help this time compared to last. It's shit isn't it? My GP said not to worry about giving calpol/ibuprofen on an empty tummy, it will help even if they bring most of it back up again quite soon after. The good thing is that d&v doesn't last as long as a cold, so hopefully she'll be over the worst of it by tonight. Big hugs for both of you.

Ooh babys awake. Best feed him.

worsestershiresauce · 05/02/2014 16:02

Ok, I'm feeling a bit of a fraud now as it doesn't seem to be D&V. Firstly no nappy, and secondly she kept down a small lunch. I'm now wondering whether it is just a case of a really bad flu like cold leaving her so bunged up that she is gagging because she can't breathe when eats. Who knows. I'm just grateful that she's a bit better now, and I'm not wiping up after both ends.

Plonky pointing... nope.. I agree that would be handy. Her preferred aim is either at me or the high chair. The high chair is coming off worse as I can be showered. It can't. It smells really quite bad now.

Stormy when's dd starting nursery? Have you found one you like?

Yummy I had to try the cry to sleep last night as I've done my back and can't put her in her cot without jolting her awake. The good news is she seems to learning to self settle. DH slept in her room the other night and she took about half an hour to give up and go to sleep. Last night she cried for about 3 minutes, rolled about huffing and puffing at the injustice of it for another 5, and then went to sleep. She was exhausted though, and had just been fed, winded, and changed, and I stayed beside the cot talking to her so it was a fairly gentle approach. It is hard, but I'm coming round to the idea that it does work.

Pouring with rain and blowing a gale today. All as it should be then. I hope you are all having if not a snot free then a reduced snot day.

BettyOff · 05/02/2014 17:53

Oh no Wors, I hope it's short lived!

We're full of snot again here too but she seems happy enough with it (other than yesterday when she was a teething misery all day).

Eco we had a bumper sleep last night too. She went down at 7.30, was up 12.30-1 but then slept until 6! She came in to bed then, chattered away to us until 7.30 and then fell asleep on my arm for another hour! I have no expectations of this being repeated but it was nice while it lasted other than us waking up a few times because the poorly dog had been allowed upstairs and was asleep diagonally across us

Pudtat · 05/02/2014 20:14

Banana flavoured penicillin doing its stuff so snotty baby much brighter in himself. I'm a snot monster in my own right but have just given up on ever being able to breathe, hear, taste again.

Am having mad week as loads on at work so lots of Kate nights and I am up to that there London Town Friday for a couple of days with my mum sans boy. Poor dh very much left holding the baby. Will have to make it up to him somehow.

Well done on all the newly sleeping babies. Worse, I tend to figure if he'd be crying if I held him then letting him have accompanied crying in the cot isn't actually worse. This approach led to him learning to self settle really quickly and even with his recent illnesses I think we've only had to go in and cuddle him calm twice when he wakes coughing. Mind you, his sheep comforter really is a miracle. I'm not sure what we'd do if he didn't find snuggling into it so satisfying and damn cute!

Hope for more good nights. And being able to get to work tomorrow, given the forecast. Nasty nasty drives home last night and in this morning and more due. Hope Shattered is ok!

Pudtat · 05/02/2014 20:15

Kate? Late...

worsestershiresauce · 05/02/2014 21:58

Pud you had me wondering whether a Kate night was like a Kit day. I am almost disappointed Grin. Banana flavoured penicillin sounds nice. Better than orange nurofen hopefully. Apparently that is mega yuck.

Just had our first official fever here, which freaked me out a bit. She's ok, but lost a ton of weight in such a short time. My little round pudding of a baby is now a skinny toddler. DH is settling her for the night now, on the basis I am going to be up and down all night so could do with a rest. Poor little thing. It must be miserable being ill when you can't tell anyone what bit hurts.

Eco, Betty hope the good sleep run continues.

Plonkysaurus · 06/02/2014 07:32

Worse have you tried the syringe with nurofen? Ds just about sucks the medicine out of it. Oh poor love, has she improved any? Absolutely horrible isn't it?

Pud ooh nana medicine. Brings back memories of horrible ear infections, but it works.

Ds woke at 4.30, normal for us, so brought him in (much to dp's distaste but frankly he can get lost if he thinks he can direct me about in the middle of the night while not actually helping, ahem.) checked my phone and my best friend had her baby at 3am. Lovely news. And such a chunky baby from my 5'2" size 6 friend!

worsestershiresauce · 06/02/2014 09:51

Plonky yes, a syringe is the only way I can get any medicine into her, even calpol. I have to strap her in her high chair, hold her head and basically force her to take it a few ml at a time. The whole process is horribly upsetting. I'll be honest I'm not coping well with the constant sickness. She hasn't had a well day in about 6 weeks. She's fractious, isn't eating, or sleeping, and I'm constantly sick too. No sleep at all last night, and she's cried since she got up. Poor little thing Sad

Congrats to your friend! Small women often have large babies and vice versa. Weird isn't it. Zara Phillip's baby was the same weight as worslet and you could fit 3 of me in her. So not fair Grin

BettyOff · 06/02/2014 11:24

Wors I've completely forgotten and on phone so can't scroll back but have you been to the GP and pushed for them to take a really good look at her rather than just say its a cold and then another etc? It probably just is the constant bugs of new toddlerhood but your mind won't rest if you're not sure.

worsestershiresauce · 06/02/2014 11:38

Betty I took her to the GP last week when I thought she had a chest infection, and they diagnosed croup. I think she has now got something else on top of the tail end of that, so a double whammy. If no improvement tonight I'll take her again tomorrow. It's just a constant stream of bugs at this time of the year isn't it! She's asleep finally, so I'm going to crash out too. I am also going to investigate the possibility of a night nanny for a while. Anyone know anything about such things?

Plonkysaurus · 06/02/2014 12:45

Oh goodness that sounds awful. Especially for someone who's active and raring to go as you like to be. I don't really have any suggestions (clearly Betty is the lady for that) other than be kind to yourself. Does DD relax more if she's on you? If so a sling might be your best bet. Make sure you look after yourself too.

If you didn't live dahn sahf (which is, frankly, the other side of the planet) I'd pop down and make you a cuppa/hurry you away to bed.
