Check in here. Do we still need the stats?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

We have frequent leaks too - although more often when I change the nappy than when DH does so I think it's my technique (or maybe it's because I change more). We did try going up a size, but that leaked too.

On the subject of nappies, one of my nct friends contacted our local women's refuge and they would be delighted to have any surplus nappies so if you've bought too many in newborn size, thats a good option for making use of them.

Soupqueen · 20/11/2013 19:57

Natalie, they're checking for hip dysplasia.

Do you put DS straight down? I always hold DD upright for about 20 minutes after a feed. All babies have an underdeveloped valve at the top of their digestive tract so even if they don't suffer reflux per se they will bring up food.

Natalieand · 20/11/2013 20:11

soup I do put him straight down yes but only because he settles himself back go sleep I wouldn't want to risk him getting used to falling asleep on me at night as could be a tricky habit to break seen as were doing so well ATM. Perhaps a small blanket under his crib mattress would raise him enough to reduce/stop it ?

Soupqueen · 20/11/2013 20:19

Yes, worth a try raising the crib a bit. I'm a clueless first timer so hadn't even thought about creating habits!

Thepurplegiraffe · 20/11/2013 20:47

Clapham Chloe is exactly the same so maybe she also has mild Colic. Nothing seems to work, she is either crying or feeding the last few days and also cries etc in her sleep at night which is distressing. I was so convinced she was going to be a chilled baby as I never felt much movement when I was pregnant but she is anything but.

Chloe also has to have a hip scan but just because she was breech so hopefully nothing to worry about.

whistlingdixie · 20/11/2013 21:00

Soup Natalie I spend at least 20mins after each feed trying to calm A down / stop him crying. He refuses boob, thoroughly winded, clean nappy... Most times he possets or vomits but not always projectile or copious amounts. Really don't know what else it could but reflux or colic. I wish my biggest worry at the moment is this comforting leading to bad sleep habits as he's still wide awake when I put him in his nest. Then I lay next to him trying to soothe him to sleep (and keep an eye out for more vomiting).

Really wish I could help him - the little guy seems so uncomfortable (at best) or in pain (at worst ) :-(

This evening's crying fit has decided me - going to GP ASAP... More than happy for GP to tell me I'm being paranoid and it's all normal / will subside on its own. But can't stand the thought that he's in pain and I'm rationalising it away :-/

pinkbuttons · 20/11/2013 21:02

evening ladies, just managed to catch up.
Good Luck to all babys with hip scans. Didnt realise it was so common.
flyer sorry bottles arent going well. Isla was a pain with them last week and took DH 40 minutes to give her 2 oz on Monday but last night she finally got it. how is A's reflux?

Sympathy to all with refluxy/colicy babies.

Isla has been refered to a paediatrician this morning for reflux. GP not hapey to prescribe anything stronger than ranitidine and wants to check is not being caused by anything more sinister. Exhausted and fed up of vomit but glad to have some sort of a plan.

Mnippy · 20/11/2013 21:13

Thanks for all the blocked nose advice! Will try a saline spray. I already put him in the bouncer in the bathroom during shower, mostly because he cries otherwise!

Flyer, I also decided against trying the supplemental system. Decided it would take too much time and hassle when I just want to enjoy my baby.

Re leaky nappies, have you made sure that the frills on both sides of the nappy (around the legs) are fluffed out wards? If bits are tucked in, that's where the poo escapes.

Readyasilleverbe · 20/11/2013 21:23

Thanks for all the support.x
Whistling def go to the gp. I felt the same about being paranoid etc but I had a nagging feeling things weren't as they should be and thats all you can go with.
Clapham hugs to you and your fussy little dude. So upsetting seeing them distressed. So rubbish isn't it when they seem like chilled out babies and turn into nutters! I've gone into survival mode and getting through each day without having full on breakdown is a bonus as far as I can see.
Love and hugs to all. Xxx

Flyer747 · 20/11/2013 21:51

Good luck to all those having hip scans.

Pink how much vomit does Isla bring back up? And is it after every feed?

To those with reflux or colicky babies Thanks it's so awful seeing them in a state of distress and not knowing what to do.

Gave baby A gripe water 20 seconds later she threw it back up with all her feed, what a waste of breast milk!

So after yesterday's health visitors visit it made me so upset and I felt like all my hard efforts to bulk baby A up got dashed within 30 seconds I decided to get anti depressants as I'm so down with this whole weight gain rigmarole, I've been put on Sertaline and hoping it helps although it's merely a short term thing.

Clapham the lactation people I go to see tomorrow, I'm dreading it as they weigh her again. I'd just started to chill out RE: feeding then after yesterday I feel like I'm back at square 1

I hope we all get lots of unbroken sleep tonight. Grin

Bronzemoth · 20/11/2013 22:26

slippy this May be daft but I've often confused my boobs leaking on N for a leaky nappy, could yours be the same thing?

clapham I felt like I could have written your post re wind. ??. N was groaning and wimpering on his sleep an hour ago it really upset me.

Lovelybitofsquirrel · 20/11/2013 22:47

Flyer good luck with the weighing tomorrow, I know it's easy to say but try not to worry about it too much x

Thepurplegiraffe · 20/11/2013 23:02

Flyer sorry to hear you are having such a tough time. Good luck for the weigh in tomorrow, hope it's encouraging, sounds like you are doing an amazing job!

ananikifo · 20/11/2013 23:13

flyer you know you can refuse to have them weigh her, right? She was weighed on Tuesday and reweighing her two days later on a different set of scales is unlikely to provide any useful information. It makes me really sad that you're so anxious about this.

Tonight DH and I hid in our bedroom and cried. He'd had a stressful day of work and had to drive my dad to tesco and they almost got robbed on the way. DH have J a bottle of ebm using our new bottles and my dad told him he was holding the bottle wrong. DH is always so scared of doing things wrong and hurting the baby and I felt awful for him when my dad said that. It was mean. Angry I am sleep deprived and gong crazy in the house with my parents and nephew. I'm also anxious dealing with a colic, nappy rash, cluster feeding, and upcoming christening. I know I'll miss my parents when they leave but right now we want our house back.

ImpOfDarkness · 21/11/2013 00:21

F has been cluster feeding for hours. I'm woried he's going to suck me dry and then howl all night.

chickieno1 · 21/11/2013 00:34

Oh ana poor you and your dh :(. Sounds stressful. I know what you mean about loving your family but wanting your house to yourself. You and your dh are doing a fab job! I also know how bad it feels when lo has nappy rash. I was frantic a few weeks back when M had a red bum. It's better now after loads of nappy free time, bepanthen on red bits and Vaseline everywhere else but I tried everything! Hugs

Flyer good luck tomorrow and hope you get sleep tonight xx

I don't think I've hit the 6week growth spurt yet even though we re almost 7 weeks??

OrangeBlossom2 · 21/11/2013 01:04

Hugs Ana, mr Ana and flyer Thanks

Thomas is feeding almost constantly again. Only 10 minutes a time but not much rest in between since yesterday afternoon. I know he is getting milk as loads of poo. My nipples are so sore from over use and he has sucked off one of the blisters he gave me at the weekend (nice). Only 5 weeks, not looking forward to a 6 week growth spurt. Gave me two hours rest so thought it was over but seems to have started again. Zzzzz.

I hadn't realised they scanned so many babies' hips. Must just be being extra cautious. Hope goes ok for all of you.

GTbaby · 21/11/2013 02:24

Can't sleep. Pissed off. I finally have a sleeping baby. N I can't sleep. Got to be at my 6week check at 9am. Sad So no chance of a lay in.

ananikifo · 21/11/2013 03:56

Thankschickie and orange, and Thanks to everyone up having a stressful night.

I also wondered tonight if my breast could run dry from feeding so much. I assume the baby would cry if not getting anything. My parents were amazed that J took a 90 ml bottle in the middle of his cluster feed and he still wanted more less than an hour later. I think they were assuming that he fed so often because he didn't get much each time.

xuntitledx · 21/11/2013 04:27

flyer - good luck, hope you start getting the support you need xx

ana - the analogy I read about breastfeeding was trying to empty a glass using a straw whilst someone is filling it up at the tap i.e impossible to empty Grin I will swap sides though after 30 mins if LO is having a longer feed than normal as I do start to feel drained and my boob becomes very soft again.

OrangeBlossom2 · 21/11/2013 06:23

Ana I wonders the same last night as Thomas only slept from1-2 and has been feedimg the rest of the night and I wondered if I was empty so I expressed and still got 70ml (which he drank straightaway). By the time one side is emptied the other really has filled again.

MIL was surprised at frequency of feeds too and she was here on a normal day. They must either have forgotten pr be from a generation that did 4 hourly schedule maybe?

Hope you got a bit of sleep GT. I am going to baby massage this morning so also have to get up in 40 minutes. Worse night so far and DH had gone to Paris with work so no chance of a rest Sad

pinkbuttons · 21/11/2013 07:05

Hope you managed to get some sleep GT

Sending sympathys orange hopefully baby massage will get you a good night tonight.

ana sending you hugs with so much going on at the moment.

flyer really sorry A still not gaining weight but please dont let the health visitors panic you about it. Have they discussed using something stronger than ranitidine? if shes still so sick. Isla is sick after every feed and in between. Amount varies from enough to just get herself wet to what could potentially be most of a feed. also get a lot of clear vomit a few hours after a feed and its that bit that really hurts her Sad

dixie I felt the same about being paranoid mother but im really glad I took Isla. I think with such small babys your expected to be overly cautious and as a mother if theres anything you can do to help pf course you want to. I would say trust your instincts x

5 weeks and 6, days and Isla woke up every 2 hrs in the night and fed for an hr each time till I just bought her in our bed so she could just feed when she wanted. cant fault her timing for this 6 week growth spurt but am.now exhausted and covered in vomit...

Readyasilleverbe · 21/11/2013 07:44

Flyer I swear I'm not insane but I must have dreamt about you /A last night as I woke up, referred to my son as a she and asked OH to change Alexandra! Oh dear. No idea what the dream was but there you go!
Another quick ranitidine qs: any side effects that anyone using it on baby has noticed? Xx

Flyer747 · 21/11/2013 08:08

Haha Ready Grin at least I'm in someone's dreams, that's funny! Also no side effects from the medication. Although I fed her once and forgot to give her the ranitidine and she threw up the entire feed so give it before hand.

Ana Thanks I hope you can soon enjoy the two of you and baby J in your own home again.

Pink A isn't sick very much anymore just usually once a day and only a smallish amount. Last nights vomming was straight after a feed and my mum tried to spoon feed her gripe water 30 seconds later it all came back up.

Def sounds like you are doing the right thing having her referred to a paediatrician as that's quite a lot of vomit. Is her weight gain ok? Thanks I hope you get it sorted soon, maybe they'll put her on stronger medication

roofio87 · 21/11/2013 09:20

while I was at my mum's this weekend she dug out the 'guide to motherhood' book that belonged to my great grandma when she had her children in the 1920s. it was hilarious!! but interestingly they fed their babies every four hours and no sooner, no matter what!!! they had such a strict idea of routine, so maybe we aren't as far past that as we think and thats why some of our parents just don't get demand feeding!! this book also told you to leave your baby in the pram in the garden for an hour a day to give it some fresh air and give the mother a break!!!! oh and you must never feed your baby in the night, it may take a few weeks but they'll stop crying for it eventually!! (so mean!!) ha.

H had a projectile vomit incident during his late night feed last night. I know its normal for a baby but he's never sick so took me by surprise!! he slept so well last night though so think it did him some good!!Smile
