Thanks orange I know it's common but today his cries have this whimpering quality that breaks my heart. The hydrocortisone should work quickly, and then I'll get my calm (ish) baby back.

Of course this all supports my fil's theory that, at the age of 4 weeks, J is teething. Hmm

OrangeBlossom2 · 19/11/2013 21:43

Eek hopefully not teething yet!

Thomas just pulled and tugged at me them slipped off a bit and clamped down while pulling some more and I took ages to try to get a finger in to break the suction and now feel very sore. I can't imagine what it would have been like with the addition of teeth.

GTbaby · 19/11/2013 22:05

Tip for bottle feeding. If baby stops sucking twist the bottle, with the teat still in the mouth. Should get baby sucking again. Someone told me this with #1 at 4weeks. Shocked me that it worked.

Really want lo to sleep in his cot today. My shoulder hurts from sleeping awkwardly while co sleeping.

ananikifo · 19/11/2013 22:06

Yeah it's one thing I don't want him doing early! You can see the teeth under his gums but that doesn't mean they're erupting. I'm sure it would hurt me while feeding it would also make him miserable, and he's too little to chew on things like teething toys.

GTbaby · 19/11/2013 22:55

Here's hoping to non grumpy
teethers Wink

Just a thought I was complaining Bout my SPD a few weeks ago. I still had it at 5/6 weeks. I'm now at 8 weeks on Thursday and its almost gone.
I start doing my Kegel exercises every time I was in pain... Which was alot Confused it may be coincidence, but worth a go right?

Shootingstarsandcomets · 19/11/2013 23:40

Baby b just slept in his Moses basket for 3 hours!!! Woo hoo!
We are ff here too and he only goes three hours still. Takes 4oz a time. Wish he would go longer but he's obviously not ready.......
Operation transfer sleepy baby to Moses basket is about to begin..............

Shootingstarsandcomets · 19/11/2013 23:44

Transfer successful! I don't believe it! Grin

Mnippy · 19/11/2013 23:58

Re night feeds, baby is going max 4-5 hours (between 11 and 4am usually) then 3-4 hours (between 4-6am). But it is so important to keep in mind that things improve, deteriorate, improve again etc and that there is no normal. Trying to explain to DP that there are babies worse and better than sleeping than ours, and we have to be stoical about things.

Can anyone give advice about what I should do with a baby with a very blocked nose. Suction pipette thing doesn't really work. He is struggling to breathe but can just about feed okay. Do saline drips work?

Mnippy · 20/11/2013 00:02

Well done shooting!

Oh and re bathing, at 6 weeks we are bathing baby every day. He enjoys it and is really zen afterwards (although screams his head off while being dried). Mostly it is part of an evening routine, although I do it first thing in the morning if he has been doing poonamis and lots of vomming overnight. I only shampoo his hair every second day though.

Sephy · 20/11/2013 03:30

Flyer and any others giving ebm bottles - what age are you starting to try and avoid nipple confusion? Im so nervous we're going to mess up bf.

Whistling, I have the bebe au lair cover as well and like it, though it's a bit fiddly to get used to sometimes. I'm not convinced its loads better than my giant muslin tucked into a bra strap...

Sephy · 20/11/2013 03:32

Oh and great to hear about gripe water successes.
My bottle didn't come with a spoon - what did it look like and any recommendations for suitable alternatives I might already own? Syringing did not go well last time!

GeorgieJo · 20/11/2013 04:13

Sephy I gave a bottle a 2.5 weeks and we haven't had any confusion. He is now 5.5 weeks and usually has one expressed bottle a day. Has been known to go from breast to bottle and vice versa in one feeding without any issues (eg if he is roaring while DH is warning the bottle or if he drains it and wants more).

GeorgieJo · 20/11/2013 04:20

Um, "warming" the bottle not warning it...

OrangeBlossom2 · 20/11/2013 04:22

sephy its the ordinary little white medicine spoon with a big and little end.
bottle reluctantly introduced in week two. i was worried but no problem at all. still prefers breast, when hungry roots for breast etc.when topping up we almost always did it after a breast feed. last couple of weeks do just bottle at some feeds.

GeorgieJo · 20/11/2013 04:40

While I am up, just wondering: how disturbed are everyone's babies while they sleep?

S grunts and startles in his sleep, but also sometimes cries out with wind and needs to be snuggled through it. So even if he goes 3.5 hours between feeds, he often needs attention throughout that time, so I sleep in 10 or 20 minute snatches.

Is that normal??

whistlingdixie · 20/11/2013 06:44

Thanks for bf apron advice.

GeorgieJo - my LO is very difficult to settle at night particularly between 8pm - 1am and is often awake & fussing / crying for 5 hrs. He then feeds and sleeps through to 6am. Unlike others here, during the day he goes 1.5 to 2.5 hrs between feeds but settles quite quickly. We haven't cracked the 3 to 4 hr cycle yet (he's 5 weeks today).

Sephy · 20/11/2013 06:45

Georgie, mine is like that but I have to confess to often sleeping through it unless she's properly crying. She'll cry out once (eyes shut throughout) and then just go back to making grunting noises. This morning when she was like that I have given her some gripe water though which seemed to give some impressive farts, so maybe I should be more diligent at getting her up and doing that every time.

OrangeBlossom2 · 20/11/2013 08:13

I usually try to ignore the noises too unless he actually cries/wakes up or it has been three hours. Sometimes he whimpers or cries in I his sleep but then drifts back off, I think it is wind/pooing/ dreaming. A lot of grunting, snoring, heavy breathing etc too.

OrangeBlossom2 · 20/11/2013 08:39

Three hours since last feeds do he is stirring I mean, I don't leave my baby to cry for three hours!

Thepurplegiraffe · 20/11/2013 08:56

I tend to do exactly the same, leave her unless she is waking up which normally happens every 2 or 3 hours. Otherwise she won't be ready to feed and will want it but won't take enough.

Bad night and morning here. She is so uncomfortable but neither infacol or gripe water seem to be doing the job. Does gripe water build over time like infacol?

littleducks · 20/11/2013 09:32

For all those worried about lack of sleep, I would like to share this link o isis who research 'normal' infant sleep. I found it helpful when ds seems to be awake all night and friends babies are sleeping for hours on end.

I think I will join the facebook group under a fake name as I dontreally do fb but the thread seems to be really quieting down.

Shootingstarsandcomets · 20/11/2013 09:37

Well baby b only fed once last night so that is progress. Ended up cosleeping as usual but at least he started out in his basket!
sephy with ds1 DH gave him a bottle of expressed milk from the word go and he was a brilliant breastfeeder and then when we wanted to wean him was a brilliant bottle feeder too. Quite a few of my friends who just did bf never got their babies to take a bottle so ended up having to continue bf even when they wanted to stop or even have a night out. It's really good if baby can do both and then you have more options.

whistlingdixie · 20/11/2013 09:44

purplegiraffe my understanding is that gripe water should work straight away

moonblues · 20/11/2013 10:22

Mnippy I've found saline drops are quite good overnight, but I've found sitting DS in a bouncy chair in the bathroom whilst I have a shower seems to work really well. Especially if it's very steamy, then he does lots of big sneezes and seems to breathe easier.

Natalieand · 20/11/2013 11:09

mnippy I used the calpol nasal spray if works enough for him to feed also altho snuffle babe is from 3 months and he was only 4 weeks I put some on the top of his babygrow so he could breath it in over night without it being on his skin xx
