Breakfast doesn't exist! She only eats when in the mood for it. Because they've got to motivate themselves to reach for food and calmly eat it there is no real scope for scheduling these calm moments with meal times. I won't be aiming for actual meals for some months yet. As to veg I just pop a couple of bits in the microwave as and when she's interested. So you can't really say its breakfast now and expect them to eat. I would really recommend the Rapley book. It takes away all the stress of weaning. Someone I know was trying to spoon in purée for months, read the book, relaxed and then texted yesterday to say her boy had just eaten a lasagne off the tray with no worries. It IS messy...

pinkbear82 · 07/12/2013 22:08

Shhh don't mention baby photos.... We got a load done when dd was 6 weeks old, DP paid to have a set done. They are currently still in the bag we collected them in Blush by times she's 16 they may make a wall.

hedgehogy · 07/12/2013 22:32

I've heard about food before one being just for fun (good job as DD isn't even managing to swallow much of the mashed stuff!) but at our weaning session they said that you need to start weaning from 6 months because their iron stores are low rather than for calories (they need to take vitamin supplements for vitamin D but there was no mention that they take them for iron for some reason, although I got the ones I did instead of abidec because they contain iron too).

We cooked the carrot stick but gave the pepper and pear raw. We're doing a mixture, so our plan after first tastes is to cook stuff, offer a stick and some mashed at the same time, and freeze batches of the extra mashed stuff in ice cube trays (to go into bags once frozen) so it's not such a waste. So there'll be quick meals ready to go with a quick defrost of a few different cubes (DD won't always be able to eat what we're eating), and we're also going to do cubes of fruit so that we can add them to porridge and plain yoghurt when she starts having those (she's only having one taste per day at the moment).

MrsBri · 07/12/2013 22:35

We let Amy play with the purées. It makes for interesting face, clothing, furniture and carpet covering! But it makes her more interested in what she's doing. She only eats a couple of spoonfuls though.

Good plan re microwaving. I'll have to do that. :-)

Our meal times are haphazard as whether she's able to try food depends on her naps, how tired she is and if her teeth hurt.

I'll start mix weaning a bit more soon, I think, rather than having just puréed food.

She loves playing with a spare bowl and spoon so I'm hoping she can aim ok!

hedgehogy · 07/12/2013 22:52

DD has a good aim with sticks of food that she can hold in her hand but I think it'll be a while before she gets the hang of using a spoon! We'll keep giving her one to hold though. We also let DD play with the food as advised, it does get very messy! If you start at 6 months they say to move on from purées quite quickly to avoid them being fussy in future.

pinkapples · 08/12/2013 06:37

Wow so much goes on I can barely keep up these days what with work and little one! It's great to hear all the weaning stories although mine seems quite different and makes me wonder if it's all wrong... Theiah has beak fast and a bottle then lunch and a bottle then fruit/veg and a bottle then a bedtime bottle at 7.30pm eating is going well and now pretty much all of it goes down (puréed weaning) she's now having a few lumps too which is lovely as she is really chewing although we have no teeth yet!

Anyone bought a cup yet for water/milk instead of bottles? I was thinking about it now she's 6 months

Hope you've managed to sort the kitchen out rue? I don't have he fun of cats fortunately

Hmm For those of you with babies still not sleeping but as someone has said already it cant last forever can if?

Christmas shopping yesterday and I'm nearly done now is everyone looking forward to abides 1st Christmas'??

hedgehogy · 08/12/2013 06:50

DD has milk before food too (half hour to an hour before).

We got given Tommee Tippee cups with the free flow spouts at the weaning session - they said they're ideal as they're free flowing. They said to offer water with every meal, so that's what we're doing.

I'm really looking forward to Christmas, we're putting a tree up this weekend and I can't wait to see baby's reaction!

Mrs81 · 08/12/2013 07:34

Good morning : )

We started weaning last weekend; purees so far but will aim to do a mixture of that with baby led. So far he just gets one cube per day but we should probably increase that. Am I allowed to miss the old nappies??

We moved him into his own room on Friday. It's lovely to have our bedroom back and not sleep with a nightlight but I do sort of miss him too...

Apparently it's Christmas soon. I'm in denial!

MrsBri · 08/12/2013 07:58

The fact you're meant to give them good when they're not hungry is where it goes wrong for us with timings as sometimes it's difficult to fit everything in as we have no fixed timings for anything! And if Amy's catching up on sleep because of a crappy teething night there's very little time for food!

We give porridge for breakfast and then a veg or fruit purée for lunch with baby rice. With a Tommee Tippee cup, which she seems to have got the hang of quite quickly and volunteers to drink water without being reminded. Most of the time!

It's all quite interesting how they progress, isn't it?

pinkapples · 08/12/2013 08:16

We're moving Theiah to her own room on Friday when she's 6 months old very scared and will miss her lots but it's got to happen sometime Shock in denial about this

Sarah2506 · 08/12/2013 08:22

Yes, we waited till six months as I couldn't be doing with puréed food, and at six months there is no need to bother with that as you say. She is still BF entirely on demand. Where it falls down is that I eat erratically and not very well. So doesn't really work to say she should eat what I eat and with me. As that often means a sandwich while pushing her around!

MrsBri · 08/12/2013 09:12

Amy's dietician said we should wean early on purées when we saw her, rather than wait til 6 months, so we thought it best to follow advice! :-)

I think she will like veggie batons, so I'll give her a mix at lunchtime today.

hedgehogy · 08/12/2013 11:17

We have no fixed timings either, it's impossible with bf on demand, naps etc. It's hard fitting one taste in, I have no idea how we'll get up to three meals! And so I'm also the same with eating erratically and not very well which is why she can't always eat what I'm eating (we should batch cook some healthy quick meals for me so she can share as she's always interested in what I've got).

Aww pinkapples, I feel the same. We're putting it off a couple of weeks by saying it'll be too much moving her into her own room at the same time as starting weaning. There are lots of changes at 6 months: weaning, going from the pram to the pushchair, new room, new cot etc.

MadameJ · 08/12/2013 12:12

Well I think dd will be in with us until her teenage years due to the several hundred wake ups!!

No food yet but I better think about it soon x

rrreow · 08/12/2013 13:27

I'm not sure if it's DS2s cold or teething, but he has almost entirely gone off the boob. Suckles for a minute or so and then just bites Sad my boobs are like rockhard melons right now. It's utterly painful. In better news he really does seem to be doing 3 hour stretches at night more consistently, so YAY.

With the weaning I find it difficult to give a feed before giving food. I feed on demand, but our mealtimes are fixed because of our routine/DS1. So sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

I had a violin concert yesterday which was fun and went well. It was hilarious though because at a certain point during a big group piece, DS1 came up to me and hugged my leg while I had to keep from laughing and concentrate to finish the piece! Grin

MrsBri · 08/12/2013 15:47

I'm glad it's not just me struggling to fit it in around naps / feeding! Amy sometimes ends up without a taste some days. I'm a crap mummy!

Mrs81 · 08/12/2013 17:06

I love the idea of leg cuddles mid-concert rrreow Grin

We have a tooth!! Well, a tiny slither of tooth but I'm sure it will poke through some more...

pinkbear82 · 08/12/2013 19:12

With feeding how gaggy are your Los? Dd seems fine and then massive gag/choke even on totally puréed foods.
DP especially is still very twitchy after her episode at four weeks and once that happens he Pretty much is twitching with every mouthful and it makes things very tense. Don't know if she is normal for this (figure there has to be some, it's a different thickness to get used to after all) or if she is more than normal.

After she pulled my bottle of water with one if those sport type lids on today and helped herself to water io said to DP might need to get her her own cup.

Trying at getting dd sleeping back in her cot again in her room, after her nasty cough she kept ending up in with us propped up, and now getting her used to her own space is tricky! I think it's also hard as two/4 nights suddenly when dsds are here the noise levels increase and routine tends to go and puts everything out. Love them dearly but can't help think if they were used to dd and not so demanding routines etc could continue and dd would know where she is.
Tomorrow for example after 4 nights/days being wonky, will be a write off due to dd being over tired and napping too much... Viscous circle.

MrsBri · 08/12/2013 19:16

Amy gags and coughs a bit. I think some is for effect though!

I think it's just getting used to pushing it back in the mouth / swallowing it. I believe it's totally normal though. I just give water and move on so I'm not making a big deal out of it.

I'd be the same in your position though I think.

pinkbear82 · 08/12/2013 19:54

Thinking of taking her to get weighed on Thursday so might ask the good old HV and see if there is any wisdom from there.

I have to say I am more on the relaxed side of things with it, much more than DP, but then I had to get back on with feeding her again after it all happened, so suppose there is some difference.

DontmindifIdo · 08/12/2013 20:44

Weaning going very badly here, DD just isn't interested ! (DS was a greedy piggy so this is a surprise to me!). However, she's full of a cold this weekend, and I think was sickening for it last week. I think try again from Monday...

Sarah2506 · 08/12/2013 20:49

Polly gags on her food but we just trust her to sort herself out. She hasn't learnt how to properly deal with the movement of food round her mouth yet. The baby we had lunch with gagged a lot on her spoon though, apparently the gag reflex is triggered quite far forward so they gag a lot if you spoon feed them, or if they are shoving finger food in!

curlyclaz13 · 08/12/2013 21:12

From what I've read the gag reflex is quite far forward so it doesn't take much for them to gag if you see what I mean. We are so erratic with meal time that he has only 'eaten' once in four days. Must try to get more organised and I can't imagine doing three times a day anytime soon let alone going back to work and feeding him. If I end up in my old job we won't be home until 6.30, bath time is 7.30 so how do I cook and eat within an hour ? We rarely ate before 8pm before.

Sarah2506 · 08/12/2013 21:32

Curly will he be in nursery? They feed them dinner. You'd just do a milk feed before bed.

rrreow · 08/12/2013 22:07

I also read about the gag reflex being really far forward. It moves back with age. DS2 often gags when sucking his fingers or even when latching on to the boob! Gagging is a totally normal way for them to move food around their mouth. Gagging is loud, choking is silent.
