Gosh forgot to comment too PD, but meant to say I wouldn't be any help as no older kids or experience in that.
Dh just dropped a bombshell.... back later

poisondwarf · 20/09/2013 13:40

Thanks Jam - good to know. I didn't realise you used to do that for a living.

Rubes sounds ominous...

Nolda · 20/09/2013 13:45

Glad to hear you're back home, Beans. Loving your DD3's name. I hope all the ouchy bits heal up quickly.

JJ that is a rotten start to school for your DD, what a shame. I hadn't heard about the strike either but there isn't anything on our school's website so hopefully we'll escape it.

I went for an informal interview this morning, so, all being well, I could be in gainful employment the week after next, eek! Am twiddling my thumbs in Sainsburys car park at the mo' waiting for it to be time to pick up DCs. A job would be great.

Nolda · 20/09/2013 13:47

Jam, how miserable for you with the spd. Don't know what to say but sending much sympathy.

Nolda · 20/09/2013 13:48

Rubes, hope the bombshell not too traumatic!

poisondwarf · 20/09/2013 13:51

Rubes on the shirts I would be seriously tempted to fork out for some new ones. They'll only cost you the price of a glass wine and think of all the glasses of wine you can drink in the time you save! DS's polo shirts are from John Lewis but unfortunately I'm not qualified to comment on whether they need ironing due to my chronically low standards.

poisondwarf · 20/09/2013 14:00

Hiya Nolda. Good luck with the job. What kind of thing is it? Funny you should say that about hanging around at sainsbury's wishing you had a job. I had a really bad day at work the other day so I phoned do up for a moan. he was in also and I remember desperately wishing I was pushing a supermarket trolley around instead of being in the office. I guess the grass is always greener...

poisondwarf · 20/09/2013 14:02

Aargh not used to posting from tablet. I phoned DP up for a moan and he was in Aldi is what I meant.

Nolda · 20/09/2013 14:33

Grin PD

Nolda · 20/09/2013 14:36

Job is just PT legal sec. I was a paralegal before I went on maternity leave all those years ago, so a step down but it will be good to have a foot in the door, as it were.

Vagolajahooli · 20/09/2013 14:44

Am I the only one who thinks Rubes is a genius. Ironing with hair straighteners! Seriously pure genius. I haven't ironed for donkeys years (the ds' saw our iron which was out for dh to iron a shirt and it was like that scene from 2001 a space odessey where the cavemen find the big flat rock thing). Back in the UK when ds1 wore a uniform, he only went to a small school so we all made a pact not to iron our kids clothes so non of us looked a worse parent than any of the others.

With the school settling its quite nice here as kids just start school when they turn 4. It is young but generally when they start they are the only new kid so they pair them with the last child that started. It gives them buddy and also the buddy, who was previously the new kid in town, gets to feel all special and responsible. So Rubes I think it's a good idea to encourage DS to look out for the less settled kids. Also desperate to know what the bombshell is????

Beans loved the birth story sorry about the piles but it's worth it for that squishy ickle bundle of yum. Plus dh has piles and he's never given birth so never had the child to show for the damage.

Jam I worked as a nurse in special schools not far from where you used to live. Loved it. I'm thinking of getting into special needs one to one school assisting here for complex care kids, at one of the international schools.

PD keep us updated. I think it helped here that he is in montessori as they just kept changing techniques with him, but in the end there are things he is just not that interested in. He gets consistent A+ for maths, & science so they just let him plug along at his reading & spelling.

I finished my latest assignment, I'm pretty happy with it.

Indith are you there I found a study you might be interested in about outcomes for standard AND high risk births cared for by midwives. Usually studies have only been done for non risk. You may have already seen it. I can't remember for the life of me your RL name on fb can you tell me your initials and I'll send you a link.

Hey and good luck Nolda!

Rubena · 20/09/2013 16:00

Urgh. Back. Coming to you from the pub near school Grin
Dh came home from on call (he's on leave but still has to do on calls - also had to get stuff signed off for important meeting on Tues) and said "need to know your thoughts if I said I got offered a job today (fellowship) in Australia, despite the fact we'd written it off"

Mckayz · 20/09/2013 16:03

Has it made you rethink going to Oz Rubes?

Rubena · 20/09/2013 16:03

Thanks for recognizing my brilliance Vag! PD I didn't know what you meant - do you mean just buy done that do t need ironing? Please tell me where and I will. I wonder if it's the anti stain Teflon stuff in these that mean they are not anti wrinkle. If so, I'd rather have anti wrinkle and throw away if stains don't come out with shout - no question!!

Rubena · 20/09/2013 16:08

Sorry battery about to die. Will be back later

Honsandrevels · 20/09/2013 16:21

Aww lovely name Beans. Have you tried the anusol suppositories? Even if they are external rather than internal they are brilliant. Sorry for the overshare people, they help the poo come out easier.

Rubes I went out at the weekend and bought a new ironing board as we chucked ours away years ago. 10 pounds in Wilkinsons! Everything is still crumpled so I'm going to have to start ironing. Wow, that is a bombshell. How do you feel about it?

How do we know if our school is striking or not? We've not had a letter.

First full week of school and I'm shattered. I'm finding it surprisingly stressful and hard work having to be so organised. With nursery it didn't matter if we were late as no one at work would notice or care what time I arrived. Just stuff like having to put her hair up everyday adds time to our getting ready routine. Please someone say it gets easier!

Vagolajahooli · 20/09/2013 17:11

Crikey Rubes that's huge. Which hospital? Where? When? Tell me all NOW!

Also Rubes from memory I used to get polo necks from M&S & hang them on a coat hanger straight from the wash and they used to dry without wrinkles.

Hons I miss Wilkos...almost as much as Dunhelm mill.

JamInMyWellies · 20/09/2013 17:59

Bloody hell rubes that's a bit of a clanger. How do you feel?

Arrtttiiieee · 21/09/2013 07:14

Wow Rubes, more details please!

PD, I rudely didn't comment on your first post about your DS' assessment. You sound like you are being very level headed about it. Is it worth talking to last year's teacher, who presumably knew him better, to see what she thinks? Whatever the outcome I hope the school find a way to get him the support he needs to engage and enjoy his classes.

Who here had a child with impetigo recently? I remember someone did. We have had a shocker here. For the last week DD1 has been coy about changing in front of others. She has insisted on changing in private and the other night she even backed into the part so we could not see her behind. I thought it was just an age thing as she began to think of her body as private but last night I caught sight if her buttocks and nearly cried. She has about 60 huge red weeping blister all over her buttocks and upper thighs. It's like something from a horror movie as they look like open sores and some are bleeding. I nearly rushed her to A&E last night but wasn't sure if that was an over reaction. I will try out if hours today. I'm now thinking the 'cold sore' blighting DD2's nose is not a cold sore at all. I just pray DS avoids it.

Nolda · 21/09/2013 07:41

Golly, Rubes! Does the 'if' mean he has been offered a job or that he is thinking of applying for one? I seem to recall you saying that you couldn't see yourself going back until you had retired. Was that a jointly held view or your own?

Arti, your poor DD. I think it was Beans whose eldest had the impetigo. I'd definitely give out of hours doc a call today. I hope it clears up quickly.

Rubena · 21/09/2013 07:50

It's in Sydney and starts next July. There are so many things that would make it complicated and involved to do it though, so I'm thinking it's quite unlikely. It's funny, dh said he nearly didn't mention it, as his immediate thoughts were "too hard basket" then he thought I'd dismiss it outright anyway which I guess is strange as it's my home, but actually for me it's just about doing what's best for us and his career etc. Whether this would be is not certain yet but I'm leaning towards it not being a good idea, but still going to listen to all the details. He's waiting to get more info.

Yes Vag I do hang them up straight from the machine and they are wrinkly. I bet if I had the normal ones without the anti stain stuff it'd be fine. Must get a packet and experiment.

Sorry to hear about dd1 Arti! Hope it clears up soon. It was beanette1 that had it. Also confused about the Au Pair. I thought they are suppose to go all that stuff?

Rubena · 21/09/2013 07:57

Oh sorry x posted Nolda. Yes exactly. I just realized it wasn't clear. It's a fellowship for 12 months. After that back to the UK so although it would be good for his career, it may not out way the downsides of going. Massive income drop as he does a second job here. Sydney is massively expensive and we don't know the pay but fellowships are generally low paid. And I def would struggle getting my head around leaving again if I moved home and got entrenched in everyday life. I really think unless it's massive money (it won't be) then it's not feasible. I really don't think it'll be happening, but I think that will be confirmed when we get details through.

Rubena · 21/09/2013 07:59

Nolda, it was presented to him in that, if he wants the job, it's his.

DeidreBarlow · 21/09/2013 08:39

Wow rubes. That is quite a bombshell! When will he get more info through? Arti your poor DD! It was beans DD who had impetigo but DS also got it in the summer up the back of his leg. It was nasty but only he got it and a round of oral antib's soon cleared it up. Defo get to Drs ASAP it won't clear on its own. It just keeps spreading.
