Including our friends from late May & early July!

Thought time for a postnatal thread.

So. I'm craving a nightly glass of wine already, week
5 of motherhood. Anyone else?!

OP posts:

mrsbri as contraception I am using a seven week old baby:-)

Baby weight; I gained 20kg. I've lost 11. I have so far to go. I'm out power walking the pram like mad. Went to gym for first time on Saturday which felt ok, though slightly sore on scar.

C section ladies- are any of you using a sling or baby bjorn comfortably? I can't use either without backache and wondered if its me with my shredded stomach muscles to blame. Took the baby bjorn to John Lewis and they fitted it properly and everything.

Incidentally john Lewis baby room rocks! Breastfeeding area, loo, changing mats. Golden!

AlohaMama · 30/07/2013 00:24

Phew, tropical storm is weakening here, so we should be good.

On baby news, we had another night of 9 pm-3.30 am sleep. Let's hope this is a pattern to continue.

MrsBri current contraception is me being too tired, until I can gather the energies to DTD! But have got progesterone only pill in the meantime, and then was thinking about an IUD but have never had one before so need to find out more.

And I used to have baby bjorn, gave me backache. Switched to a boba carrier (like Ergo) which was much more comfy as it distributes the weight on your hips like a rucksack would whereas a Baby Bjorn essentially just hangs off your shoulders (unless they changed the design).

Baby weight here, gained 18 lb, lost all but 3 lb probably within 2 weeks, but I think I may have gained a bit since judging by my hips/gut hanging over my waisband. It seems I might not be able to get away with the mainly-cake diet that I could with ds. Shame really. I'm planning on starting running again when we get back to England (less than 3 weeks now!), and will start trying to cut back on the cakes. I've been out walking most days and am relatively active with ds, but am not sure how to get rid of the tummy squidge. Hopefully running will sort that.

Littlemissexpecting · 30/07/2013 02:12

Another who agrees real tears are horrible to see, they make me cry!
Sarah totally agree on John Lewis changing facilities, fab!
We haven't dtd yet, despite dh hints.
Bit scared tbh, and stitches still feel tight sometimes. Leaky nipples aren't very sexy either! How long do they say ebf definitely covers you for? Not even thought about contraception yet. It needs to be non hormonal, but dh not keen to use condoms so might have to try coil?
Anyone in a set routine yet? We're just going with the flow here ATM as I don't want to stress too much yet but I have no idea how often and for how long he is going to feed or sleep.

pinkbear82 · 30/07/2013 02:44

Using mini pill here, although I'm not sure it's going to last long. I suffer from a skin condition which cleared up nicely while pregnant and has since flared, the last month while asking he mini pill it's one into overdrive and s driving me insane. Only trouble is if I go back to gp they are likely to out me on antibiotics for it, afraid I'll then have to stop bf and dont really want to do that. Confused

Baby weight I'm not really sure how much I gained, but I know I lost most but seem to have put some back on in lat few weeks as clothes not fitting so well Sad need to start eating better, out walking for at least 2 hours everyday so just need to get the eating in order and hope I'll be ok. My best friends wedding end of October and I'm bridesmaid so I'd like to have lost it by then. I just seem to be hungry all the time tho.

I'm wide awake but bubs is sound asleep, I probably should try and sleep some more before the next feed.

pinkapples · 30/07/2013 02:59

I'm not sure on contraceptive tbh I have pcos and have never used anything as could not get pregnant naturally thanks to 2 rounds of IVF and 5 yrs later we have our miracle they say pregnant could kick start things so don't know anyone know they chances this may have happened? I don't want another baby so soon obviously Grin hubby doesn't want condoms although will if needed any ideas?

AlohaMama · 30/07/2013 03:02

littlemiss we've been in a loose routine for last 3 days. I had been logging feeds and noticed and vague pattern anyway, so tried to work around that, and shift things a little to better fit around ds's schedule and nap time. It's not a regular 3/4 hourly, more like 2 hrly in the morning, then long morning nap, 11.30/3pm/6.30pm/8.30pm/(1am)/3am (then more frequently between about 5-8.30 am depending on what w're doing and what she wants). The 1 am she's skipped the last few nights so I'm good with that!

SunnyL · 30/07/2013 06:20

Oh my goodness i feel amazing. Went to bed at 11 and just woke up at 6. DH has clearly done a feed at some point as the bottle i brought to bed is empty. Re-set my clock after yesterdays horrible day.

Im back on the pill i was on before (cerazette) which i quite like as it stopped my periods. However i'm more worried about that now given how fertile i apparently am and how forgetful i can be with pills. Have an appt at the Drs to discuss the implant though as that lasts 2-3yrs which is how long we need between babies for financial reasons.

DTD can be a lot dryer as there is a hormone produced if breastfeeding which causes it. We've used lubricant although DH sees it as a personal challenge!

MrsBri · 30/07/2013 06:41

Pinkapples, we are going to use condoms even though we hate them as, for non-hormonal contraception, I think it's either those or the non-hormonal coil, and I don't really fancy that! Not a great choice, is it?

As for baby weight, I seem to be carry quite a bit on my thighs still, but I've not been signed off by the GP yet after my c section, so don't want to do too much in the way of exercise until I am. When I have walked a little distance I can really feel it in my scar, which concerns me a bit.

Once I'm signed off I will walk more and get back on my cross trainer too.

My bump is still deflating as my stomach muscles repair as well, which isn't great :-/

Well, Amy finally went more than 2 hours between feeds last night with a 4 hour gap. But we are now up for the day. Joy :-/ I hope the growth spurt doesn't last long!

DontmindifIdo · 30/07/2013 07:15

Sunny- dd went through a few days of screaming, infacol seems to have helped.

I've given up bfing, right for us but feel shit about it still. However, I've found I'm enjoying her more with out te stress. Im going to give it another week then try to instigate a routine.

As for dtd, so far managed once, but dd doesn't sleep in the evenings at the mo so it means a shag has to be started after 11pm, I am far too tired at that stage to be interested.

Oh for tummy muscle recovery, I've been advised to wear control pants to hold the muscles in place. Not sure if it would help much, but I see the logic, if you'd ripped muscles anywhere else on your body you'd strap it up until it had recovered.

Weight wise I've got 4kg to shift, not too bad. Am going to try to increase my walking to start the reduction. For those bfing still, it's 60cals per oz you make. Feed as long as you can!

AmIGoingMad · 30/07/2013 07:52

Aw sunny- sounds like yesterday was a tough day. I'm glad today is looking lots more positive!

No dtd here yet. I'll be 4 weeks post section tomrw and will be waiting at least until 6 wk check ( which is on our anniversary!). Although tiredness and toddler added to baby might well make it a lot later! I'm probably going to go back on the pill but am wondering about the coil as I'm not planning to have a third child.

Still haven't tried the baby carrier here but am thinking about starting soon. As Elodie is quite a big un I'm not sure if the Moby wrap will be ok to start with it if I should go straight to the baby hawk.

With weight- I didn't weigh during pregnancy- preferred staying in denial! I'm back in my looser pre pregnancy clothes though. Although I already had some to lose before being pregnant. Will up the activity when I feel more normal and running around after DS too means I'm much more active this time around!

HV this morning- it'll be interesting to see how heavy our little guzzler is now!Smile

Steffanoid · 30/07/2013 08:04

if you're walking get map my walk on your phone, you put your weight and height in and just start it when you go for a walk, tells you how far/fast you walk and calories burned Smile

6 week check here today can't wait to hear yep you're good to drive and see how much Ethan has put on, spent yesterday afternoon packing, we're off ti center parcs with my oh's family on.Friday we go on holiday all together every summer, it's lovely because they live 4 hours away (his parents) but his sister and brothers tend to be spread around the country so it's nice to get to see everyone in one place, his aunt and uncle and their kids are there too so 14 of us altogether!

pinkbear82 · 30/07/2013 08:10

Pineapples that stimulation app is amazing... Transfixed Violet for ages!

We still need to remember we are all early days after having these little ones and what our bodies have been through and are still going through.

Easier said then done, I know! I still, most mornings, have a 'nothing fits me' moment and then kinda settle down, it does fit, it just fits differently.

Tipping down with rain here, not an inspiring day to go out and do anything, plus have to wait in for the new tv unit to arrive, had a pickfords of the front room in the vain attempt to stop the dog from a) hurtling over the back of the sofa and b) trashing the blinds in the window by standing on the sofa and trying to be like the cat.

pinkbear82 · 30/07/2013 08:11

Pinkapples - iPad got me!! Really should proof read things, always been a fail of mine.

AlohaMama · 30/07/2013 08:29

Interesting point on the control pants. May look into that once I'm back in a less sweltering climate.

Glad you got some rest sunny, hope today will be a better day for you.

Steff - i love center parcs. The child in me just likes going down the slides and river rapids all day!

Pinkbear- totally agree on clothes, it takes forever to find something that fits, that doesn't show the nursing bra, that allows easy access to boobs and that isn't already dirty from leaky boobs/poop/spit up! Its all glamour.

MrsBri · 30/07/2013 08:45

Steff, I have Map my Walk and will start using My Fitness Pal again next week when I start in earnest!

I have been a bit lazy to date, but if you can't be lazy in the first few weeks after having a baby, when can you?!

I think I'm the only person not in pre-pregnancy clothes? The fact I was slender with a flat tummy doesn't help as the remaining bulge alone rules almost everything out :-(

I'll have to look at control pants, I think.

MrsBri · 30/07/2013 08:48

So...I'm trying Amy out at settling herself. She's in her Moses basket with a couple of toys (and hiccups!) wide awake and playing. No dummy.

I'm hoping she eventually decides she wants to sleep. Not holding out much hope though!

DontmindifIdo · 30/07/2013 08:56

MrsBri - I'm in my "fat wardrobe" from post-dc1, so about 1 dress size up, although i'm probably more like 2 sizes on my tummy. It helps I own a lot of tunics and non-fitted summer dresses so I can squeeze in them. If you have a sainsburys near you, their waist clinching medium control pants seem pretty good, only £6 (which is not a lot to waste if it doesn't work for you). I wouldn't go above medium control though unless you have an event to look fabulous for!

I'm also being super lazy at the moment, have just driven DS to nursery again, it's less than a mile, there's really no excuse not to walk, but it's raining and the pram is folded and DD's car seat was just easier...

Will walk up to town today, am going to investigate the baby and mum cinema! (It's Wolverine, not really what I'd choose to watch, but you only get one baby friendly screening a week). Worth checking out at your local cinema if they do something similar- make the most of this brief window when they are non-mobile! (Also managed to go into London and round the portrait gallery yesterday while DD slept, give it a few months and that sort of thing just won't be possible without her screaming the place down - FYI, the new portrait of Kate Cambridge looks like one of those pictures where they've aged a celeb to see what they'd look like in their 50s, not flattering at all...)

Steffanoid · 30/07/2013 08:58

im not back in jeans yet dont worry am going to town and back every day so at least 2+miles hopefully it'll start to have an effect

MrsBri · 30/07/2013 09:43

That's more encouraging then! I think I need to invest in interim clothing, but begrudge doing that! :-/

We have a Sainsbury's, but it's too small for clothes. Boo! I wonder what M&S has? I'll look into it. I need something.

pinkapples · 30/07/2013 10:00

Mrsbri persevere with the settling I bathed changed and fed at 10.00 last night then put her in the Moses basket with nothing just a blanket covering her she gave in at 10.50 without any intervention from me Grin

curlyclaz13 · 30/07/2013 10:00

weight wise I am about 6 lb lighter than pre pregnancy but I need to loose weight as I was quite overweight before. I try to go for a walk each day but the weather has been too hot and now it is rainy. A diet of cake and chocolate will not help me though !

curiousgeorgie · 30/07/2013 10:22

I'm in awe of all of you walking miles and losing weight... I've barely left the house in the past five weeks!

Does anyone know if I can use infacol & gripe water at the same time? Sephy seems to suffer terribly with wind and I'm desperate for something to help.

Today is a good day though, I'm booking a Florida holiday for next year to take my two girls Grin When DH and I first started trying for DD1 we always made a joke that when we had 2 (and we hoped they'd be girls) we'd dress them as princesses and take them to Disney World, and it's actually happening Grin

MrsBri · 30/07/2013 10:23

Pink, I've taken the toys out and just put her in there now.

She's wriggling and talking up herself.

She's driving me to distraction today, crying, but has a clean nappy, won't wind and won't eat. I'm not sure how else to calm her down :-( I think she is tired though as she has barely slept since waking at 6.

Should I expect crying before she settles though?

arlandria666 · 30/07/2013 10:40

mrsbri before I invested in Ewan the Dream Sheep which I love!! I downloaded a white noise app on my phone that used to send Elliott off really quickly he settles well on his own the majority of the time now but I still use Ewan if he is over tired and in the night after feeds I switch it on and it sends us both off really quickly it's on a timer too so it doesn't go on non stop.

pinkbear82 · 30/07/2013 10:45

Mrsbri I think they cry to get us to pick them up! Have you tried soothing music? Not sure if you use a dummy but I found it helped to settle violet to start with she's not too bothered now if she has it or not.
Amy will wear herself out eventually
