Including our friends from late May & early July!

Thought time for a postnatal thread.

So. I'm craving a nightly glass of wine already, week
5 of motherhood. Anyone else?!

Sarah2506 · 25/07/2013 08:43

I was thinking more woohoo the temperature in the bedroom has dropped below 28!!

AmIGoingMad · 25/07/2013 08:56

Yey! Rain and slight cooling off here too! (Remind me I cheered on the rain when i start moaning about it!)

Littlemissexpecting · 25/07/2013 11:01

We have rain too, but too warm for a coat! Am I brave enough for flip flops?!

MrsBri · 25/07/2013 11:03

Still sunshine here. Odd, as very heavy rain was forecast.

It seems the eye drop / antibiotic combination is working as Amy's eyes are so much better today. Barely any gunk, thank god. I'm not sure the reflux is fully sorted, but maybe it's early days.

We tried size 2 nappies yesterday. BIG mistake. HUGE. (To quote Pretty Woman!)

I had to deal with an exploding poo which escaped out of the legs onto the vest, my skirt, the carpet, two towelling squares and a muslin. Just before my hairdresser arrived!

Then later on she did another poo which thankfully didn't escape the legs, but did escape up out of the waistband. Fail.

We are back on size 1 now. Just shows the size range isn't entirely accurate. Maybe baby needs to have a bigger waist than Amy has.

We put her in her bouncy chair for the first time yesterday as she had been a little too small for it before, and she loved it! Went crazy smacking the dangly things. :-) Funny.

Hope everyone is ok :-)

MrsBri · 25/07/2013 11:08

Soggy feet, Littlemiss?! :-/

SunnyL · 25/07/2013 11:15

MrsBri we had a similar encounter yesterday when we tried her in the real nappies for the first time. All my fault though as I couldn't remember how to fold the cloth so just bunged it in any old style. Also a BIG MISTAKE. I have now watched the You Tube video of how Mia Bambino nappies should be folded and won't be making that mistake again. Bleurgh!

MadameJ · 25/07/2013 12:44

Right I need help ladies.......dd is doing some crazy acrobatic shit in the evening mainly, whilst firmly attached to my breast??? Im obviously getting really sore and I have no clue what to do, I called the hv who was as usefull as a chocolate tea pot and suggested giving her formula but couldnt offer any clueas to why this would help obviously apart from save my poor nips!! Any ideas greatly received x

DontmindifIdo · 25/07/2013 12:55

Madame - so you have learned the important parenting lesson, HVs are there to operate the scales to weight the babies, you won't get actual help from one unless you are lucky.

Anyway, have you thought about introducing a dummy? DD did this and in the end I gave her a dummy, she really didn't want the milk (hense the pulling off as soon as latched, biting etc) she wanted the comfort of sucking. Or it could be her tummy is sore, DD also acts like this when she needs a poo, basically she has a sore tummy and in her limited experience, the way to fix a problem is to drink milk, but what she needs is a poo. Is she pooing daily?

Other things could be that in the evening, if you're tired and have been feeding all day, your milk supply might not be as fast/heavy, so she's getting frustrated/annoyed that it's harder work to get the milk. a bottle of formula might help that, or if you don't want to do that, you could try expressing in the morning first thing after she's had her breakfast feed (so more likely to have lots of milk) and giving her a top up of your own milk - that might take the edge of her hunger so she feeds more politely.

SunnyL · 25/07/2013 13:03

Madame my little pest attacks me when she needs winding which does build up over the day. By late afternoon she does some cracking burps.

Also in the heat we have found giving a bottle in the late afternoon/ early evening has been demolished by baby who was clearly thirsty. She was feeding off me almost constantly in the heat and a bottle seemed the only way to calm her and help cool her down at that time of day. In fact we were getting milk directly out of the fridge for bubs in the heat which did seem to help.

MadameJ · 25/07/2013 13:13

I think you are both onto something, I think its tummy/wind related as she does bring up lots of wind so maybe I need to try harder with that!!! I also think my supply drops during the evening as there seems to be much less leaking/gulping etc which may frustrate her. She is soooo different to Dd1!!!

AmIGoingMad · 25/07/2013 13:24

Wind seems to be a problem for us all, whether formula or breast feeding. Our little miss won't give up her wind in burps at all. We have to wait for it to come out the other end!

Decided to test how much I can do now that I'm 3 wks post section as of yesterday. Turns out- not quite as much as I thought as I seem to have overdone it and am not getting little pains and then sharper ones intermittently. Have now succumbed to putting toy story on for DS and am feeling guilty but that it was necessary.

I'm finding it surprising that its so difficult to adjust to the disrupted sleep second time around when it hasn't been long since the last time we did it. I'm wiped out! Although last time we shared the night feeds, doing one each but this time in my wisdom I decided that as DH is bk in work I should do them all during the week. I am looking forward to Friday night like you would not believe!!!!

curlyclaz13 · 25/07/2013 13:33

Madamej Oscar does a similar thing, who knew how far nipples stretch !? he also does off and on a fair bit.
I will try winding him a bit more.
I was going to ask at bf group which is on now but due to Oscar being hungry horace again I am not there. I haven't even cleaned my teeth yet. Sad

MadameJ · 25/07/2013 15:18

I was gonna try a bf'ing support group but its on a friday afternoon during DD1's naptime so wouldnt really work and I havent really got anyone that could watch her for me!

pinkapples · 25/07/2013 16:41

Having an up and down day today baby has been beautiful sleeping 5 hrs from 10-3pm so I could wash the car then she's just fallen asleep now however the eternity ring hubby ordered me has been discontinued so I have to choose another one Sad

Olimoss · 25/07/2013 18:36

Oh god oh god I need reassurance, please.

I was approached two days ago for work, and thought 'ah yeah, I'll listen but it won't be a good enough day rate and I can say no and etc etc' but was offered an AMAZING day rate. Had phone meet yesterday, face to face meet today (after dropping J at boyfriend's office whilst I raced off to Farringdon!) and so from next week am working Tues and Thurs till end-Sept, when I leave for Australia.

I have lucked into a maternity nurse who's looking for a couple extra days, so she will probably look after J (meeting her Sunday to go through finer details), have met her and she's worked for another friend with twins, who recommends her.

Despite all that I feel a bit physically ill with it all. Like, a horrid mother. Like a money whore.

Am I doing a terrible thing?

Oli i wouldnt say you are awful at all. French women regularly go back to work at 2 months. Personally i,m also acting as sponsor for 2 MSc students so i'm spending the next couple of weeks reviewing their dissertations and i'll be marking them in august. Aside from the headache of finding time i'm quite looking forward to getting my brain in gear again.

Littlemissexpecting · 25/07/2013 20:09

Well we also avoided the rain here, despite the forecast, so feet stayed dry!
Mrs Bri we've just gone to size 2 and ds is 9lb.
Ds has had a few days of wind/ tummy ache, worse in evening. HV was rubbish and couldn't help or give any advice.

Hawkmoth · 25/07/2013 20:10

DH has just gone out for a few hours. His parting shot was, "all you have to do is relax now."

I should have told him to fuck off shouldn't I? As it was, I managed not to cry and I'm proud of that.

I'd love to relax, but the baby might, possibly, however unlikely, let go of my nipple and fall off my knee. Bollocks anyway, if I can stand up any time in the next three hours, I'm going to have the last packet of salt and vinegar crisps. That'll teach him.

Sarah2506 · 25/07/2013 20:12

oli I would absolutely love that. Just a bit of work to break the endless cycle of feeding, changing, entertaining. The opportunity to be me, doing what I do, feeling myself again. I honestly wouldn't think twice. But I'm not very mumsy, and I'm not ashamed to say I find it boring a lot of the time.

If you were American you would be back at 12 weeks. Only thing- wearing my legal hat- are you being paid maternity leave from anywhere else? I don't think you are but that might be an issue if they are paying you with an expectation you don't work.

MrsBri · 25/07/2013 20:34

It's definitely not awful, Oli. From next month I go back to taking witness statements on KIT days. I should get 10 statements done over 2 days and I can't wait to start the brain running again.

Learner, I think it must be to do with baby shape why the nappies don't fit Amy as she's 11 lbs now, I imagine. The waist on size 2 is too big for her though.

She's feeling a bit grotty due to the antibiotics which have led to a slightly upset tummy. Poor thing. I have a limpet baby who I hope will sleep in her bed later as I don't fancy sitting up all night!

rrreow · 25/07/2013 21:26

Oli, I am working too (own company). It keeps me sane (although the pressure is getting to me a bit as well). Working is just an alternative way to do the best for your kids. I think we feel guilty whatever we do as patents.

curlyclaz13 · 25/07/2013 22:08

Nappies- why is there so much overlap on the weight on different sizes ? I have ordered size 3 as they are for 9lb up but for some reason I didn't realise we are currently using size 1. Oscar is skinny but long and I don't think the current size come up high enough to contain overnight poo ! size 3 look massive so I guess I have some ready for in a few weeks.

Olimoss · 25/07/2013 22:18

You're all lovely, thank you! I'm not v mumsy at all but J is so little it does feel anti-instinctive to leave him just yet. Gonna do it though, for the filthy lucre....

Thank you all so much!

OP posts:
MrsBri · 25/07/2013 22:29

Curly, it must be to do with body shape.

I suppose you can have varying body shapes requiring different sizes even with babies.

We could probably get 2 of Amy in size 3 bearing in mind how large the size 2 are on her!

AlohaMama · 26/07/2013 02:54

oli I don't think you're doing a bad thing at all, but totally understand the guilt feeling. I had to go back to work at 12 weeks with ds, and he seemed so little to hand over to someone else. Fortunately I was able to get a friend to look after him while I worked 2.5 d/week but I would have found it harder if I hadn't been happy with the childcare. It sounds like a good work opportunity, and you should go for it. You have to do what works best for your family.

madame I was having very fussy baby in the early evening, lots of bobbing on/off the boob (including lots of nipple pulling, ow!), seemed uncomfortable. After a few days of this I decided once she'd had a few goes at the boob and I knew she could not be hungry I just worked on getting her to sleep. I now think when she wakes up to feed in the early evening she needs to go straight back to sleep really, so I give her a dummy, lots of rocking/bouncing and just work on getting her back to sleep. She'll then sleep her longest stretch 5-6 hours which reassures me she isn't still hungry but is just tired. Maybe try a dummy in case she is just comfort sucking though if you don't normally give her one it may take a day or two for her to get used to it.
