Including our friends from late May & early July!

Thought time for a postnatal thread.

So. I'm craving a nightly glass of wine already, week
5 of motherhood. Anyone else?!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
learnermummy · 22/07/2013 22:50

Evening all.
Will have a look at those swings, thanks.
During day Anna doesn't settle we'll lying flat- in pram or basket. She does love her stokke newborn chair that I have in the kitchen - awake or asleep. My new (well eBay!) travel system is great and has helped school run no end. I know they shouldn't spend too long in car seats but being in/out of car to & from nursery it's so much easier to click on and off the quinny frame. Last school run tomorrow though SmileSmileSmile.
V hot here tonight, and am covered in insect bites Hmm so hope I can sleep!

SunnyL · 22/07/2013 23:21

Well Lily only sleeps during the daytime if we leave the house and she has an audience. Yesterday we didnt go out after church and she was an absolute pest and wouldnt sleep or leave me alone. Today i went to work to pass her round, then lunch with a mate followed by birthday cake (my neices) in my mums back garden and she was an angel all day. Shes great at sleeping at night but wholly unpredictable during the daytime.

We're bf and getting a poo every day or so. She is 6 weeks on wed.

We're giing to have to start trying the cot as shes about to outgrow the moses basket with her long gangly legs practically hanging over the edge. Not looking forward to that transistion as she sleeps so well in moses basket.

AlohaMama · 23/07/2013 01:23

Lily sounds like Evie Sunny! She has slept through every church service, not a whimper, even during the loud music. Every morning that I go out with DS, she'll sleep all the time in the carrier, won't even wake to feed. Stay at home and at soon as she touches the moses basket, she wakes right up, yet is fine at night once she's fully asleep, and will go straight back to sleep after each feed. Got fed up today with not being able to put her down, mountain of laundry to do, tired and grumpy toddler, dh trying to work, in desperation I called a friend and borrowed her swing. Evie is now asleep. If this is what it takes then she can sleep in there all the time, frankly.

In terms of transitioning to cot, with ds we put the moses basket in the cot for a week or so, so he got used to the surroundings while still being in the safety of the cot. He didn't seem bothered at all by the transition.

pinkapples · 23/07/2013 03:25

Omg I can't believe we're talking cots already although when Theiah moves into hers it'll b in her own room as its a sleigh one and the bedroom has no space

Any clues on when they go out? I know they say 6 mths for safety reasons but like has been said she won't fit the basket soon

And glad to report beautiful sleeping baby is back after last nights fiasco she's just done 9.25-3.15am GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

AlohaMama · 23/07/2013 05:05

pinkapples they recommend baby sleeping with you for six months but for lots of people its not practical. Ds moved into his own room at 3 months because he outgrew the moses basket. His room was right across the hall so we could easily hear him. They talk about reduced risk of cot death if the baby sleeps in the same room but I'm not sure how that works.

SunnyL · 23/07/2013 05:46

Pink we're the same. Our cot is in another room due to space considerations. While i know the risks are higher moving them out of your room no one has been able to tell me how much more risky. The advice is always so generic with limited detail for you to make an informed decision. This means when we move her out i'll probably feel immensely guilty and be glued to the monitor for a few weeks before i start to feel good about the situation.

Just had THE MOST AMAZING SLEEP. lil went to sleep at 9pm and has just woken me for a feed. Aparrently she also had a bottle and a half at 2.30 but i slept through it. I feel magic!

Steffanoid · 23/07/2013 06:10

great, the one time Ethan is sleeping past 6am and not wanting awake time im sat with my wimp of a dog during a glorious storm which is going to sort the temperature out some, rather sweet though he checked to make sure Ethan, me and dp were all ok before he would settle Smile

I am not a morning person

MrsBri · 23/07/2013 07:58

I'm so jealous, Sunny. Amy woke at 3.30 for a feed and then wouldn't sleep, choosing to wave her arms and legs and chatter to the side of the bed nest instead. Then she decided she was hungry again at 5.30, so I finally got back to sleep at about 6.30 :-(

Then I had to wake DH as he'd overslept when I woke at 7.20, meaning I'm now awake again.

The rain and thunder may keep me awake now too.

Sigh!

I think we will end up moving Amy into her own room at about 4 months as she will outgrow the bed nest. In a way it's good to do it as the transition will be complete before I go back to work.

I know the baby's breathing is meant to be regulated by them being in with the parents, but I also don't know how much the risk of SIDS increases if baby is in another room.

One of DH's friends put their son in his own room right from the start! Not sure I could have done this.

ella0 · 23/07/2013 08:22

DD will only last a few more weeks in the Moses basket as she is long (although she likes sleeping with her legs folded up which might buy us some more time). We have a cot-bed ready for her in the nursery but there's no way it'll fit in our room (we wouldn't be able to move or open wardrobes etc!); I'm worried about her having to go into her own room at such a young age. Why don't they make longer moses baskets?! As I said before, our carrycot is longer, but that won't take us to 6 months.

Re poo, DD is breastfeed and there is poo in every nappy.

DontmindifIdo · 23/07/2013 09:12

DD is out of her moses basket, she hates it. She's currently co-sleeping with us, and when I finally get round to sorting out some curtains for her room, we might start putting her in there...

Any of the mums of boys on here getting nervous about the new royal baby name? (DS's name is far too chavvy for a royal baby, so we're safe! Wink ) Although good she's gone late, that means there's not that many more babies who'll be in the same school year as ours to be born, so if her choice of baby name goes to the top of the name list, the spike will be in the school year below... (overthinking)

curlyclaz13 · 23/07/2013 09:41

Oscar is in a crib as we didn't do a moses basket so hopefully he will last a while in it.
I am not worried about there being a prince Oscar Grin

Sarah2506 · 23/07/2013 10:04

Don't worry dontmind little Prince Wayne-Keanu may not have his name revealed for a few weeks yet, if they follow tradition:-)

MrsBri · 23/07/2013 10:53

Does anyone have a foolproof winding method? Amy won't give the wind up and burp so ends up with pain from trapped wind. :-(

She's welded to me right now. Prisoner on my own sofa!

pinkapples · 23/07/2013 12:25

What are you doing at the moment to wind her?

rrreow · 23/07/2013 13:25

I sit him up with my hands under his armpits and wiggle him about from side to side and up and down. Usually does the trick. If not then over the shoulder and walking up/down the stairs. Get some real belches that way. Z needs winding every 3 seconds because of my fast letdown, drives me bonkers especially in the middle of the night.

Sarah, yes it's that same sling library! Maybe I'll see you there. I'll be wearing a red carnation baby in an aqua colour Kari-me.

Z woke for only 2 feeds last night!! And DS1 slept until 9. I feel human!

curlyclaz13 · 23/07/2013 13:27

amazing what a half decent night's sleep does isn't it.

SunnyL · 23/07/2013 13:29

Have you tried infacol MrsBri? That really helped us when she was really bad. We also sit her on our knee, hand under her jaw, lean her forward and rub her back and pat her. Seems to work although i do have quite a pukey baby.

learnermummy · 23/07/2013 13:40

Anna seems very windy too, might try some gripe water. Anna's in a crib too (when she's not co-sleeping!) so it should last a while longer!

Mutley77 · 23/07/2013 13:47

Had a long chat with my Health Visitor today about unsettled babies / colic / wind / reflux as DD is my first of three babies to be so unsettled. I do like her - she is the HCP who has talked most sense to me IMO though three pregnancies and babies!

She said that in the early weeks babies are unsettled with digestion and do grow out of it. There are no magic answers although gripe water, infacol etc can help some babies. If babies are fully ff she recommends a small feed of cooled (but still warm) boiled water during the day to help soothe their tummy. Also warm baths, tummy massage etc. By 12 weeks it shoudl all be over (unless there is a more serious or longer term issue) and until then do what it takes to keep them as comfortable as poss and yourself as sane as poss. I suppose this does fit in with the whole fourth trimester theory which I am really seeing a lot of sense in this time round!

I hope all those babies suffering start improving soon...

BTW re cots, babies in bedrooms, etc - we have always kept our DC in our room until six months - partly down to my own anxiety as much as the SIDS guidelines. However we have also put them down to sleep at 7 in their own bed (ie in our room upstairs) from a fairly young age whenever they seem ready - so not following the guidance to the letter. DD has been going down at 7 for the last few nights now although I do keep an eye on her and am generally going to bed by 9 myself. In our current home we can easily fit the cot in the bedroom but previously we have used a crib which has lasted until six months but small enough to fit in bedroom.

MrsBri · 23/07/2013 14:43

Pink, we do the on lap leaning forwards one and the over shoulder one too. Sometimes we just try moving her position to dislodge the wind which can work.

But she hates letting go of it so we could sometimes do these for hours without joy. MiL has just had some success on her tummy over the legs.

Sunny, we were wondering about Infacol / gripe water as an idea to try as she really does seem uncomfortable at times.

pinkbear82 · 23/07/2013 15:43

I can second infacol - just be better at remembering to give it before every feed! I'm rubbish at remembering and then wonder why I have a screaming child with legs cycling round and then remember. Sad

Dd is also in a crib at night, which she wiggles up and down in, hoping it will last a while. She does manage to stick arms and legs through the railings as she fidgets so much!

SunnyL · 23/07/2013 15:57

We only used the infacol for a couple of weeks on every feed. Now i barely use it as she appears much quicker to wind. I did find out that eating strawberries is a big no no for me. She was screaming at me for hours after eating them and from speaking to MIL this was appaently something DH also had a real problem with. A real shame as they're on offer in the CoOp - 2 punnets for £2. Drool!

Littlemissexpecting · 23/07/2013 19:49

We had a bad night last night with wind but its not every night thankfully. Ds has slept all day today pretty much so hope we're not in for a bad night tonight.
Still really warm here despite the heavy rain so struggling to think of things to do during the day.
How often are you all getting lo weighed?

learnermummy · 23/07/2013 19:56

Anna very unsettled here not sure if wind or heat or both. Wonder if something I'm eating is upsetting her but no idea how I would work out what!
Haven't had her weighed since 10 day HV check and won't again til 6 week check. She's really chubbed out though!

MrsBri · 23/07/2013 20:11

Amy was weighed today and is now 10lbs 14oz :-) Doing well! She's 56cm too.

She does have an eye infection though, so is on eye drops and antibiotics. And also reflux, so has Gaviscon too. Poor little miss. :-(
