Including our friends from late May & early July!

Thought time for a postnatal thread.

So. I'm craving a nightly glass of wine already, week
5 of motherhood. Anyone else?!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
curlyclaz13 · 17/07/2013 14:19

we don't go out for long as town is very close. I will get some when I can get to a big boots as ours is tiny.

AlohaMama · 17/07/2013 14:33

On Dr's advice I didn't use sunscreen for first six months with ds except for very small quantities on hands and feet mow and then. In carrier and pram I would use cloth pets to drape a large muslin to create extra shade, and a big sun hat.

MrsBri · 17/07/2013 15:03

For anyone formula feeding with a bunged up baby, we gave Amy 1oz of cooled boiled water earlier which led to a massive poo about 90 minutes later! Worth a try if anyone's baby is suffering.

We tend to cover her with a large muslin and hat when we go out, plus use pram hood and sun shade as well. Difficult one, isn't it?

pinkapples · 17/07/2013 15:08

We're not using cream just a Sun hat that we got from tesco

rrreow · 17/07/2013 15:09

I just found this link which might be helpful: www.lactivist.net/lactivists-top-tips-for-breastfeeding-in-a-heatwave

Some of the tips cross over to bottle feeding as well.

pinkapples · 17/07/2013 15:10

How old are all our babies now time seems to go to quick Theiah will be 5 weeks on Thursday Blush

SunnyL · 17/07/2013 15:14

In addition to a bottle of water I highly recommend taking your little one to a restaurant if you want to relieve their bunged up bum. Lily hadn't done a poo since Sunday night (apart from a shart) so went out for lunch today only for her to fill her nappy like a good un while the nice people around us tried to eat their dinner. Particularly amused that she fixed her stare on the next door table as she did this!

Went with my mum to the fabric shop this morning to buy fabric for a dress for me for the christening. Fingers crossed I have enough time to finish it - I've got 5 weeks. Surely the child will sleep at some point during the day time??

Steffanoid · 17/07/2013 16:55

Ethan is 4 weeks today, I think the walk to my partners work tomorrow I may try a little cream on hands and feet, I've got a parasol and then put a blanket over the opening when we were on the bus and the Sun was everywhere

AlohaMama · 17/07/2013 17:02

5 weeks 2 days today. Yes it goes so quick!

Thanks for the link rreow - useful tips there.

2 days of ds with his chldminder today and tomorrow, which hopefully means two days of getting stuff done. Including packing for Evie's first camping trip this weekend! Camping with a newborn and a toddler - could be awesome, or could be the worst idea ever. We'll see....

learnermummy · 17/07/2013 17:14

Camping Aloha? Well done, hope you have fun Smile. We've a 'glamping' weekend planned at end August - featherdown farms where the tents etc are all provided. Really wanted to go to a festival the same weekend but didn't think we'd be up to tent pitching & lugging gear across fields with 3 kids in tow!

Anna really suffering in the heat today so consequently we're both miserable. Still screaming in pram too so have bought entire new system on eBay!! DH picking up tonight!

AmIGoingMad · 17/07/2013 20:22

No sun cream here at the moment- tending to go down the parasol, pram hood, muslin route. We haven't been out for that long in one stretch though really.

We've been given ointment for the sticky eye- not easy to apply at all!

I'm having a bit of a day here to be honest. Been in tears as I just feel so guilty about DS having his world turned upside down. I can't change his nappy or lift him for hugs. And today Elodie its refuses to settle in Moses basket AT ALL for the first time despite spending most of the last two weeks asleep in it in the days. So haven't even been able to play with him properly once today. Then little miss being so upset and sick has upset him so he's been in tears too. I've literally been crying every half hour or so.

Midwife came and has decided I have a haematoma along scar but didn't really explain what it was. Mentioned something about it reabsorbing and to keep an eye on it. She then discharged me!

AmIGoingMad · 17/07/2013 20:22

Sorry- just realised how wingey post was!

DontmindifIdo · 17/07/2013 20:37

Oh AmI - don't be hard on yourself, tomorrow, stick on a DVD, snuggle up with DS with DD in your arms.

We are also doing just keepingher in the shade rather than cream.

DD is 6 weeks now, we ha our 6 week checks today (remember you have to book that yourself, when I had DS they sent you a letter, but now you are expected to call up). All good, the doctor was lovely and happy with DD's weight gain.

I've also braved a brazillian - but asked her to avoid the scar. Not pleasant, but if I'm going ot brave a swimming pool on Friday (been invited to a playdate by our super rich friends from my NCT class when I had DS, they have a pool, good people to know in this weather!), then the pant sideburns needed to go. Sadly I'll have to get the maternity swimming cossie out, not even going to try depressing myself with my normal ones...

curlyclaz13 · 17/07/2013 20:47

ami, it's hard when you have a day like that hopefully tomorrow will be better. a haematoma is just a bruise so nothing too much to worry about I wouldn't think. (sorry if you knew that and I am being patronising)
HV has been today Oscar is 5 weeks today and now 8lb 11oz so another pound in two weeks.

learnermummy · 17/07/2013 20:49

AmI I know exactly how you feel. Have spent this afternoon close to tears with Anna screaming, ignoring other 2 children and then shouting at them Hmm. Feel shit. Had to do school run with her screaming her lungs out (again). She just won't settle and I feel like a milking machine.

Sunbeam18 · 17/07/2013 20:59

Any tips for a sore, red bum (his, not mine!) - we've been trying to change nappies whenever a poo has been done but it's pretty constant with the poos. Whenever a new nappy is on we hear a squelchy fart noise...it would be a constant job. We are giving him kick time on a towel with no nappy on in the hope that that helps his bum, and are also applying Sudocrem. Any other tips?

MrsBri · 17/07/2013 21:03

I think the not settling has a lot to do with the heat as Amy has been a bugger today and has barely slept all day :-/

I'm sorry people are feeling low. I hope it improves soon.

I need to get off the sofa and do my post natal exercises if I actually want to look non pregnant ever again. Sigh.

pinkapples · 17/07/2013 21:53

Sunbeam I'm swearing by metanium at the mo (horrible yellow cream smells funny but works wonders)

learnermummy · 17/07/2013 23:46

I've used bepanthen in the past for sore bottoms. Also I love the nature babycare nappies - think they have less 'chemicals' in them and seem to be better for bottoms!

AlohaMama · 18/07/2013 00:14

Post-natal exercise? What is that MrsBri??? At some point I may find the motivation, not right now though. hoping to start running again at some point but I don't think it's possible till we're in a routine so I can time the runs around when my boobs are least full and therefore least painful! Plus it's too darn hot.

AmI don't feel bad, it's a difficult time. I don't know if you remember my posts from a few weeks ago, but they were mainly along the lines of "how do you cope with more than one"? I can't remember how old Elodie is, but for our DS, things are definitely much easier now 6 weeks on. It's still up and down but the first 2 weeks or so were much harder. Despite two years of minimal TV watching I have to admit to allowing DS much more TV/you tube time. Watching diggers or octonauts on you tube while I'm nursing so we can sit and watch together. Now I try and go out most mornings with DS and thankfully Evie will sleep almost all morning as long as she's in the carrier. I had no surgery to deal with though so was probably a bit easier for me. It will get better!

Sunbeam are you using wet wipes? If so, you could also try using cloth wipes or cotton wool with water as kinder on the skin. I use Boudreaux's butt paste which I love but not sure if available in the UK. Make sure you use enough cream to form a barrier for the next poo. That's about all the helpful advice I can think of.

MrsBri · 18/07/2013 00:42

It's a pipe dream, Aloha! Amy chose to bring up a load of milk then not settle, so I had to bounce her gently to get her to go to and then stay asleep. :-/

It's only gentle physio exercise to help my abdominal muscles go back together which I'm sure doesn't help how I look right now. I can't exercise properly yet due to the section.

I'm hoping the GP will agree to me getting on the cross trainer again after the 6 week check. I really need to lose the weight ASAP now.

AmIGoingMad · 18/07/2013 06:34

Thanks everyone for the supportive messages and tips- it's much appreciated. Today is a new day and after yesterday I'm thinking that ' things can only get better'! After a very unsettled start to the night, Elodie (2weeks yesterday so that ties in with what you said aloha) managed a 4.5 hr stretch of sleep which is already more positive than yesterday! I'm attempting to be mrs bright side today- can you tell?!

I'm also not going to feel guilty about nick jr/ cbeebies giving me a helping hand.

Learner sorry to hear you had a rubbish day yesterday too. I hope that today improves for you.

Curly- thanks for the haematoma translation! You'd think with my long addiction to ER I'd have known it was just a bruise! Weird tho as I can't see any bruising. Any idea how long they generally take to 'reabsorb' and what I can be keeping an eye out for as she told me to do?

And thanks for the oz boiled water tip- that also seems to have helped out mrsbri!

Nappy rash/red bum wise we just tend to use masses of sudo so not sure of other suggestions sorry. That worked for DS and his skin was fine with the huggies pure wipes. Dd definitely has more sensitive skin but sudo seems to work ok but in larger quantities.

Here's to a good day all round!Smile

learnermummy · 18/07/2013 07:28

Yes here's to a good day AmI!
My mother in law has finally invited herself round this morning so I need to be brave and ask her to do stuff around the house as she's not the type to notice things and offer! The house is a tip so hoping that will help!!

MrsBri · 18/07/2013 08:13

I'm glad you're feeling better, AmI. I'm also glad that the boiled water helped too. :-) I was amazed how well it helped Amy yesterday.

We're considering a trip to the Lakes today, but aren't sure it's a good plan in this heat as we won't have anywhere we can particularly shelter. And Amy kept drinking little amounts yesterday, which is fine at home, but is harder to deal with out and about. Hmmm!

Hope everyone has a good day :-) Enjoy the MiL's visit, learner!
