Including our friends from late May & early July!

Thought time for a postnatal thread.

So. I'm craving a nightly glass of wine already, week
5 of motherhood. Anyone else?!

Welcome back Mutley. I think I remember you talking about emigrating. Where are you now? Hope it wasn't too stressful. We are in the process of doing the return...only 6 weeks to go.

AlohaMama · 09/07/2013 05:32

Keep meaning to ask - for those for whom this is baby #2, how are you coping with the transition? And how are you managing your days/weeks?

Olimoss · 09/07/2013 07:07

Hi Mutley - how's WA treating you?

Ha ha Pinkbear. DH made the mistake once of going to get a bottle once but stopped off for a pee first. He'll not make that mistake again!

Those with cranky baby's in the heat - is it getting any better? I feel like it is so long as i keep her indoors. Its driving me and the dog a bit mad though as all we want to do is go for nice long walks in the sun.

Darn it crazy phone!

AmIGoingMad · 09/07/2013 07:10

Morning all!

Welcome bk mutley and thanks for your response on other thread!

Aloha- I'm lucky so far in that I've had lots and lots of help and haven't really needed to cope on my own. It will be interesting when DH goes bk to work!

Bumble Grin at you talking to your boob!

A few questions for c section ladies:

When could you carry little one up and down stairs?

What painkillers are/were you on and how long for?

When were/ are you able to use baby carrier?

MadameJ · 09/07/2013 08:13

Aloha, this is my second dd I already have a 2.5 yo. So far its being going really well and I have managed to keep to pretty much our pre baby routine. I think this weather has helped as we have being spending lots of time outside which always pleases DD1. The only thing that was initially difficult was whenever I was bf'ing, DD1 would keep asking me for things but now she seems to understand that once im finished I can play etc so thats improved!

AlohaMama · 09/07/2013 08:37

Madame I think that is my problem, I don't have a pre-baby routine as such! I had to go back to work when ds was 12 weeks old and during the time when I was off, we had all the grandparents visiting. During the week I've been used to ds being with childminders and only having him home on Fridays which were often spent busy doing chores as much as anything fun with him. Suddenly I have a whole week to fill, 2 kids to look after and trying to keep ds sufficiently amused so he doesn't distract dh who works from home. I was very focused on getting ds on a schedule (had to be really for his childminder) and ensuring he could get to sleep by himself, but with dd she just has to be carted round in the carrier. I think I'm just finding the transition quite tricky! I'm not sure if I'm over-compensating by feeling like I need to be doing fun things with ds all the time, or how to balance activities for him, playing at home versus just needing to get on with housework.

Mind you, in 6 weeks time we'll be moving in with my parents for a few months so it will all change then anyway!!

curlyclaz13 · 09/07/2013 08:55

Does anybody else wonder where they put all the milk they guzzle ? I just don't understand ! From about 6 last night he has been a horace and kept going all night since 5 am he has had 5 good feeds of around 15 minutes each. I am knackered and need food but waiting in for a piano to be delivered as OH decided he had to have one now.

Steffanoid · 09/07/2013 09:06

ami, it was about a week for me going up and down stairs and I didn't have painkillers since before I left hospital which was day 2, I dont use a along/carrier so can't answer that one Smile

I just answered the door to a very nice man bringing me a very unexpected delivery of flowers from my aunty, from m and s as well, dread to think how much they cost her! they're absolutely gorgeous and will fill 2 vases

ella0 · 09/07/2013 09:08

Thanks pinkbear.

AmI, I was fine with stairs more or less straight away (taking it slowly) but I didn't carry the baby up and down them for a couple of weeks. I didn't want to risk it.

After I left hospital (less than two days after my section) I was just on paracetamol (4 times a day) and ibuprofen (3 times a day). I was advised to take them for at least two weeks, but that I could take them as long as I needed to. I'm still taking them now, but due to the mastitis I've developed rather than the section.

I've got a baby carrier but I'm not attempting to use it till the 6 week mark, just in case. I'm healing well and don't want to do anything that might impede recovery.

ella0 · 09/07/2013 09:10

I wonder that too curly, as I keep reading how tiny their stomachs are!

That's a lovely surprise, Steff.

Mutley77 · 09/07/2013 09:22

Aloha - I'm in Australia - the move and settling was hard work, I think I am starting to feel a bit more at home now my baby is here! Where are you going from and to? I can identify with how you feel in some ways as I gave up work at 24 weeks pregnant (and my social and support network) to move here so kind of felt at a total loss in terms of filling my days - esp with the kids were at school - my oldest two are 4 and 8. For me it is sort of easier now the baby is here as I actually have a purpose. This week is school holidays and my kids are watching TV all day today although we were out and about yesterday. I am anxious about the return to school as I have to do 2 school runs by car, leaving here at 8.25 which will be a real rush! But I appreciate I don't have a dependent toddler to look after.

AmI - I carried DD up and downstairs from day one - my physio said ok to carry the baby but nothing heavier. I do appreciate I'm on my 3rd C/S though so I am told the recovery gets easier each time and I also know what to expect.
I was on paracetamol, ibuprofen and tramadol (that seems to be given instead of codeine here in Aust). I stopped the tramadol when I came out of hospital as didn't want to be in an unnaturally deep sleep and stayed on the paracetamol and ibuprofen until 2 weeks post op.

Olimoss - I think WA is treating us ok - have had the extremes of weather from 40 on arrival down to 2 at night now!! It does seem like a nice place to live but I do miss home. Thanks for all your advice on the hospital system though - that bit all went v smoothly.

learnermummy · 09/07/2013 09:56

Woohoo I have managed to deliver one child to school and one to nursery, all on time Grin. Slight hiccup in the middle when Anna decided to throw up whole feed in the pram so we had to come home and change her before setting off for nursery. I've also managed to get a doctors appointment arranged for later to revisit my nasty piles Hmm.
Feel good about my achievements so far today!!
Must go and put pram liner in the washing machine!
Welcome back mutley.

MadameJ · 09/07/2013 10:09

Aloha, I am sure you will find what works for you all soon as its still really early days. I am quite lucky in that the baby is really easy going (in comparison to dd1 who was a bloody nightmare for the first year!!!!). Our balance is we tend to be out and about in the mornings, home for dd1 to nap and afternoons are pottering round doing jobs etc, that seems to work really well for us x

rrreow · 09/07/2013 10:47

Z went a stretch of 5 hours between feeds last night!!! It was just a shame that DS1 decided to wake up right in the middle of it and require over an hour to settle back to sleep Hmm so still haven't had longer than 2 hours consecutive sleep. But at least I know he can go longer than 2.5 hours between feeds now! I hope that bodes well for the future.

My right nipple is incredibly painful at the moment. Feeding from that side is really unpleasant. Some people on another forum suggested thrush. I'm not sure as I thought that would affect both nipples. The left is a but more sensitive than usual but not nearly as painful as right.

You know what annoys me? Both DH and SiL do this. I'll be feeding Z and they ask if I'd like a drink. I'll say yes and then they basically disappear for at least 30 minutes! Drives me nutty especially if I've asked then to refill my water bottle so am left feeding without any water for ages!!

Hawkmoth · 09/07/2013 11:06

Rrreow, could not be doing with that. I get an overwhelming thirst when feeding and poor DH has to dash off for a pint of water... Sometimes has to give it me if Bobbie's in an awkward position!

Thrush can be one side at a time, or it could be that latch is different on different sides. I'm doing two different holds for mine, left is crook of the arm, right is belly to belly with a really firm hold!

Waiting for the MW to come this morning. The big weigh in. If she's not put on anything it'll be paediatrics... Not ashamed to say I'm shitting myself.

AmIGoingMad · 09/07/2013 11:31

Good luck hawk!

Well done learner!

That's a lovely surprise stef!

Aloha I'm sure you'll settle into something naturally that suits you. I imagine the adjustment period must be really hard tho- I'm dreading DH going bk to work, especially as I'll be just 2 weeks post section by then! I'm just hoping I'm not housebound at that point as its not fair on DS. It's not that I don't think I'll manage to get out- its more that I won't be able to get down steep steps we have into the street carrying pram yet and it'll be a bit early for using the sling I'd imagine.

And thanks for the advice mutley and Ella! I've been on paracetamol (4 times a day) ibuprofen (3 times a day) and tramadol (4 times a day). I'm not taking the tramadol anymore as of today as I'm fed up of the fuzzy head and tiredness. So far I definitely feel slightly less comfortable but its not too bad so will carry on and see how I go.

AlohaMama · 09/07/2013 11:57

Thanks ladies, don't know what I'm worrying about really, dd so far is pretty easy and ds, while being slightly high maintenance at the moment at least still takes a long (2-3 hr) nap each afternoon. I think I just feel much less confident about doing the much thing than I did about working!

AmI that is a whole other level of complication do have to be dealing with recovering from a c section. Hope you're feeling good by then but I imagine you still will need to take it easy.

mutley I hope you're settling in OK. I'm moving from hawaii back to England.

Mutley77 · 09/07/2013 12:00

Congratulations learnermummy - sounds like you have at least 2 others as well, not just me then! I think I will treat myself to coffee and a muffin out when I achieve my first solo school run!!

AmI - sounds like you are coping brilliantly for less than 2 weeks in. Being housebound is a big fear of mine too so I hope you can manage it - but be careful with the pram, getting down you could possibly bump a bit but you would have to get up again. It sounds like the sling might be a safer option.

Good luck hawk - been through the weight gain issues twice now and I know how stressful it can be.

learnermummy · 09/07/2013 12:22

Yes my others are 4 and 7 mutley. Coffee and a muffin sounds nice, shame Anna being a bit miserable today. Think will stay home and raid freezer for phish food ice cream Smile.

Mutley77 · 09/07/2013 12:23

LM - Phish food icecream sounds even better!!!!!! Mine are 4 and 8 so fairly similar. How old is Anna?

Mutley77 · 09/07/2013 12:24

learnermummy · 09/07/2013 12:46

She's 2 weeks today mutley. My other two are both boys and are totally in love with their little sister Smile.
How are your 2 settling in to a new country?
