Including our friends from late May & early July!

Thought time for a postnatal thread.

So. I'm craving a nightly glass of wine already, week
5 of motherhood. Anyone else?!

Woo... Baby's put on ten ounces since Friday. That can't be down to eight oz of formula a day, so my milk must have been delayed.

Also had a chat with MW about the birth and now it's all straight in my head I've realised that not only did I have a minor PPH, but also a placental abruption... Which is pretty fucking scary. There was a HUGE clot behind the placenta and it wasn't explained at all in the rush.

Getting a card for a full blood count from the GP tomorrow so I can start iron as I'm sick of feeling knackered.

rrreow · 09/07/2013 14:30

Thanks Hawk for confirming it can be one side at a time, I didn't know that. I also think I saw some white stuff in Z's mouth (on his gums, he doesn't open his mouth a lot though so couldn't get a proper look), so I think it'll be worth trying to make a GP appointment.

Well done on the weight gain!! And also on getting more precise information on what happened. I think that's really important in order to mentally process your labour and be able to move on from it.

Steffanoid · 09/07/2013 14:52

is there anything more boring than sitting waiting for the health visitor? she was due at 2 pm and isn't here yet, but I know as soon as I do anything, especially go for a wee, she'll show up,
had a visit from my sis, mum and nephew for lunch, had him and Ethan next to each other and they look the same size! Ethan was 10.1lb a week ago and my nephew is 16 weeks and 13.1 today, I think Ethan is gonna be a big boy!

pinkapples · 09/07/2013 15:24

Oh no steff hope she turned up and apologised!

Booked a date for Theiah's christening today it's the 8th sept so hopefully the weather will hold out Grin

Off to walk the dogs in a minute thought I'd feed Theiah first though then I might get a peaceful walk

pinkbear82 · 09/07/2013 15:35

We're home! Violet still has antibiotics to take but we're home.

Have been sent to bed after a decent shower (mums staying to make sure I catch up) and luckily have enough expressed milk for the night feeds to be covered for me.

My phone broke yesterday which sent me into a spin as all my photos of violet are on there. Yet to sort it.

Well done everyone with getting things done and settling in the run of normal things again - I don't envy you all

Steffanoid · 09/07/2013 15:44

well she came, he's weighing in at 11lb 3oz now, put on 1lv2oz in a week!

MrsBri · 09/07/2013 16:19

Goodness, Hawk. It's probably best to not know these things at the time, I think, as too much stress and panic isn't helpful during labour / straight after.

Amy has put on 5.5 oz since Sat, so only 3.5 oz til back to birth weight. Very much a relief. And makes me feel a bit better about swapping to FF.

Hope everyone is still dealing with the heat OK.

AmIGoingMad · 09/07/2013 16:49

Great weight gains all round!

We've had a slight loss here but measured against birth weight it's something like a loss of 1.8% so they're not worried but will re weigh in 2 days as we were worried about how watery her poos are too. My blood pressure's up too and swollen legs/ ankles still so they're going to recheck me in 2 days too. Stitches out tho so I'm just being careful not to move suddenly! Really paranoid about it!

Hawk that's scary! Agree with mrsbri tho that its probably for the best that you didn't know at the time. Speaking to mw after birth of ds freaked me out when I should have been relaxing as she said I was lucky to have given birth in this country as elsewhere in world could not have been so positive. I remember thinking that that wasn't the most helpful thing for her to be saying at that point in time!

Pinkbear I'm really glad to hear you're home with violet now. Rest and cuddle now!

AmIGoingMad · 09/07/2013 16:52

And stef I can relate- we were told we'd have afternoon appt. then they phoned yesterday and said it was being moved to this morning. They turned up at 2.30!!!!

SunnyL · 09/07/2013 19:23

Can someone please explain to my daughter that if you are too hot insisting on sleeping on a human is the equivalent to wearing a 37 degree hot water bottle. EVERY time i put her in the pram after passing out i get shouted at. Definately not going to be a scientist this child.

learnermummy · 09/07/2013 19:29

Exactly the same here Sunny - only way I could get her to sleep earlier was to put her on the carrier on the school run - she must have been so hot! Every time I've put her down she's screamed Hmm.

curlyclaz13 · 09/07/2013 20:11

Same here, silly babies Smile it feels like he has been awake and feeding since about 6pm until 5pm today. He has been asleep since 5 and I used the time to help build a piano, bake brownies, dinner eat and have a glass of wine. I feel normal !

curiousgeorgie · 09/07/2013 20:18

Pinkbear that's absolutely terrifying, I'm so glad you're home now and everything is okay..

Seraphina has been refusing to be put down at all. She was either having a bottle or sleeping or being rocked by DH or me.. And with DH only having one more week at home I was starting to freak out that DD1 and I would have absolutely no time together if DD2 needed me 100% of the time.... So today I have bought the miracle swing! (A graco sweet peace soothing centre) I've seriously not had a second without her in my arms for the past week, and this afternoon she happily sat in it for an hour and a half while I played with DD, and went back into it for a four hour sleep after milk! (Just a recommendation for anyone struggling with the same problem Smile)

Olimoss · 09/07/2013 21:22

Glad you're both home safe Pink...

Mutley - glad you're settling in, probably good you moved there in winter as summer will be a bit of a shock!

Joe had his BCG today. Horrid, really, seeing him being stuck with a needle after he had been prodded, poked and injected hundreds of times in NICU...but he was fine with it. Passport docs sent off today so our trip home to Australia late Sept should be fine.

He's been a bit off schedule today but slept so much last two days in the heat, that's maybe it. Had a terrible migraine yesterday so thank god mum was able to watch him for a bit whilst I took blissful amounts of codeine! We start swimming classes tomorrow, he'll be 6 weeks exactly.

Amazing how fast time goes, huh? He's starting to smile a lot, is able to settle himself to sleep (albeit with a few cycles of cranky crying) and s chubbing up a little.

6-week check with Dr this Thursday - anyone had theirs & know what it entails?

cyclecamper · 09/07/2013 21:48

Glad you got home Pink.

olimoss swimming classes sound fab. I'd love to do some but we can't afford it this month. Maybe in September.

Baby camper is also refusing to be put down. I'm making him wait a bit between feeds in the day (I aim for about 3 hours start to start) but he feeds almost constantly from his evening feed (7 pm today) until 10 or so at night. He doesn't really smile and mostly seems stressed.

AlohaMama · 10/07/2013 01:12

Hawk - sounds very scary. Amazing what you find out afterwards that you aren't aware of at all at the time.

Pink - welcome home, glad Violet is on the mend.

Cycle - yep, we also have the evening fussy period, but mercifully a bit shorter than yours. Usually 1-2 hours, of on/off feeding/fussing/bobbing about. I've started letting her feed lots and then at some point, just deciding she's had enough, swaddling her and working on getting her to sleep with lots of swaying/bouncing and all that stuff. It's hard to make the judgement of when she's still genuinely hungry versus tired though. I think it's pretty common but I feel like I read that evening fussiness is supposed to peak at 6 weeks and then get better?

Tiring morning this morning, toddler woke early (4.30!!) and I'm not sure he went back to sleep. Cue lots of misbehaving all morning till nap time. Let's hope he wakes up in a better mood! In comparison, the baby is a piece of cake!

arlandria666 · 10/07/2013 06:23

oli I've had my 6 week check they did baby at same time. she asked me how I found being a Mum, how my moods were, if I was breast feeding I said yes and she recommended combination feeding as in her words "you've still got to have a life & mist breastfeeding mums don't" I don't want to as I have had to cut dairy out she told me I could always try him on regular formula to see what happens think I will give that a miss!!
she asked about contraception.

baby she checked eyes, hips, tummy and looked at his boy bits lol.

thought she might have felt my tummy or looked at my scar but didn't

got his review with HV today no doubt they will tell me he is too small!!

learnermummy · 10/07/2013 10:06

Most breastfeeding mums don't have a life?! That's great advice from a medical professional!!

Hawkmoth · 10/07/2013 10:27

What weird advice!

Just slept from half six to ten with baby in bed. She did NOT want to be in her crib last night. Seems cooler today so hoping it might be easier and she might not want to feed until 2am. Mind you, without that I wouldn't have the joy of toast in the early hours... It just tastes better when you're exhausted!

rrreow · 10/07/2013 10:30

Z had his BCG last week. Are you in London too Oli?

Do any of your babies cry in their sleep? Z has been crying on and off for the past 30 minutes, but every time I look at him he's sound asleep (even smiling in his sleep!). Obviously when I hear him cry I want to respond to him, but when I see he's still asleep my instinct is to just leave him until he wakes up?

It's DHs birthday today! We're having lunch just the two of us (well, Z is coming too but fingers crossed he will be asleep!), going to the park with both kids once DS1 is back from nursery and then to Giraffe for dinner. Looking forward to it!

learnermummy · 10/07/2013 10:38

Anna seems to want to feed every hour this morning and cries as soon as she's put down. Am tearing my hair out. She's my third so feel I should know what I'm doing!

Olimoss · 10/07/2013 10:41

Rreow - yes, in West London....

Arlandria - thanks for all that info!

pinkbear82 · 10/07/2013 11:26

Learner I know how frustrating that can be and while we were in hospital because she was tube fed she didn't have any sucking to comfort her and they did giver her a dummy. (I was adamant I wasn't going to use a dummy for sleeping etc) however it calmed her straight away and I refused to let her have it for settling to sleep.

Anyways, violet was having feeds every hour this morning and at one point I thought she can't still be nary/thirsty so removed nipple and inserted dummy.... Calmed right away and instantly started fighting the sleep. Just a thought.

And please don't feel like you should know what you are doing - you do know what you are doing, being a great mum, to a new baby. Xx

learnermummy · 10/07/2013 12:03

Thanks pinkbear Smile. Am not against dummies and have tried one this morning but she kept spitting it out like it was choking her! I put up with the screaming for half an hour then gave in. She had a 5 min 'drink' and then slept for an hour, so maybe she was just thirsty!

pinkbear82 · 10/07/2013 15:45

Lol little buggers aren't they! Hope it's been a better afternoon.
