Including our friends from late May & early July!

Thought time for a postnatal thread.

So. I'm craving a nightly glass of wine already, week
5 of motherhood. Anyone else?!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Baby's the coolest one here. All windows open and all curtains closed so it isn't too bad.

My mum thinks her face is a bit fatter today so feeling a bit more optimistic for weigh in on Tuesday. Still can't get her to drink more than two ounces of formula though.

ella0 · 07/07/2013 14:47

MrsBri, they gave me the option of letting my DH do the injections but I refused (I've experienced his plaster pulling off and wasn't willing to risk it!). Lucky you having dissolvable stitches; I spent days worrying about having mine out, though it was all for nothing as I didn't feel a thing! Apparently my wound looks great too (though I had an elcs so I think they usually do).

Bf is really really tough, MrsBri, I had no idea how hard it would be beforehand. Tbh I think I'd be happier if I ff as I really struggle with the cluster feeding and I've had a couple of bouts of mastitis already (due to her snacking), which I've been told is likely to carry on recurring - this scares me. Feeding in public is worrying me too, as I've said. I'm persevering for now though.

Curly I'm using the Medela Swing electric pump. I went to a breastfeeding class while pregnant, and although they aren't supposed to recommend anything, the midwife/ breastfeeding expert raved about this pump. I get on well with it but it's quite expensive. Steff, they shouldn't hurt your nipples if you use the right size nipple bits.

Sarah, I've tried my cover once at home and my husband has put me off using it. It's plain black and definitely not one for this weather! It's a bubbalug www.bubbalugs.co.uk/ . I can't even feed at home in front of visitors - I go into a different room, but this isn't ideal when she cluster feeds - and as we've got some staying this week I need to work something out. I've tried the vest and top method but I can't seem to do it as discreetly as I'd like.

Hawkmoth · 07/07/2013 15:11

We've settled on a name - Roberta Primrose. Bobbie for short.

SunnyL · 07/07/2013 15:26

Welcome Roberta. Lovely name.

Curly we got the Philips Avent pump kit cos it was on offer but I also liked that it came with all the bottles and tubs that fit. It works fine for me but I have no experience of trying any others out there.

Watching Andy Murray on the sofa with Abby that is treating me like an ice lolly.

Olimoss · 07/07/2013 16:05

Curly - i have a Medela Swing, wouldn't swap it, it's aces.

The fan has worked wonders here, she's slept for a good chunk this afternoon.

Ella will post a link to my cover later, it's easy to use and cheap.

learnermummy · 07/07/2013 17:51

My cover is from www.badjily.com but I bought through their eBay shop.

curlyclaz13 · 07/07/2013 18:47

The fan has been magic here too !
Anyone else's baby got an inbuilt dinner sensor ? nearly ever time food is ready he wakes up and needs a feed himself, first rare steak in months only slightly ruined by feeding him while eating.

pinkbear82 · 07/07/2013 19:33

evening all.
I have to say being stuck in hospital while it's quite so hot seems a bonus at the moment - pretty sure trying to do anything normal would be a nightmare.

the good news is Violet is out of HDU, off all her monitor's had her tube removed and is back to
bf again. She still needs iv antibiotics but the improvement is amazing.

slightly scary feeding her again, so have asked to see the breastfeeding coordinator tomorrow, just for reassurance really.
scared silly at being on my own with her tonight as dp not allowed to stay now out of hdu and she's not 1-2-1 with a nurse any more. but trying to keep calm and not focus on it all too much.

hope you all manage to cool down enough to sleep and have good nights - lovely to see the sun but it has a lot to answer for!!

learnermummy · 07/07/2013 19:59

Curly, mine definitely has a dinner sensor too! All meals have to be one-handed and always have to drape her with a muslin in case I drop food on her!

learnermummy · 07/07/2013 19:59

Great news pinkbear. You'll be fine tonight x

Sarah2506 · 07/07/2013 20:09

Pinkbear so pleased to hear that and respect for wanting to keep up with the breastfeeding regardless.

My daughter is overheated and overtired. Cannot get the flat to any sort of respectable temperature and she has failed to sleep all day. We happily live next to the east coast mainline and with the windows open its so bloody noisy which doesn't help! So she's on a feeding frenzy, refuses to sleep or settle and it's doing my head in! All the normal calming measures involve her getting my body heat which isn't great!

arlandria666 · 07/07/2013 20:19

great news pink xx

curly I have lost count how many times I have dropped pasta on Elliott!! He has a meal sensor and also a mummy is about to take a nap sensor!!

He has also been mega cranky had about 3 five minute naps and fed on and off the rest of the day!!

TIRED!!!!

Steffanoid · 07/07/2013 20:30

Ethans tiredness has caught up with him today and he's slept all afternoon, we have figured he won't sleep in short sleeve vests so have had to put him in a sleep suit and he's very happily slept all afternoon, hoping it continues into the night

pink, so glad you're on a normal ward now, still can't imagine how scary it must have been and even though you're not 121 use the buzzer and take all the help you can, you'll be ok without dpBiscuit

pinkapples · 07/07/2013 20:47

For all those with babies struggling to sleep have you tried putting them on their tummies? I know it's not recommended and I wouldn't do it overnight as obviously the risks are obvious but during the day when you are watching it has worked a treat with theiah as she seems to feel snug... and something else babies that sleep on their tummies in the early days develop a higher language ability than those that learn only to sleep on their backs Grin not sure how true this is tho

rrreow · 07/07/2013 20:54

Seconding pinks suggestion for tummy sleeping. Works a treat!

forgetmenots · 07/07/2013 21:05

I let DS sleep on me in his carrier... Puts him on his tummy, helps with wind!

MrsBri · 07/07/2013 21:20

Pink, I'm glad Violet is on the mend now. Please don't be scared about feeding her. Have they given a reason for what happened?

And Amy sleeps on me on her tummy. She loves it :-)

pinkbear82 · 07/07/2013 21:22

the nurse yesterday put Violet on her tummy at one point to try and sooth her - worked a treat! she at the moment is favoring just her nappy and being on her side.

pinkbear82 · 07/07/2013 21:26

mrsbri - they think milk went the wrong way and then it getting into her lungs caused her to suffocate. my friend who is a nurse and her mum who is a mw, both feel she probably had a chest infection brewing and that the milk going the wrong way was the tip of the iceberg for her.
guess it's one of those things that's
kind of unexplained and no one really knows.

have to have resus training before we go hoMe just to be on the safe side.

cyclecamper · 07/07/2013 21:45

I've only just found this thread! Been out of it, rather.

pinkbear that sounds terrifying. I'm glad Violet is recovering. We had to have the neonatal resus training too.

Nye is not terribly happy with the heat and just wants to nurse all day, poor sausage. He's 8 weeks old now and had his first lot of injections last week. He's finally grown into the newborn clothes, although he's still a bit skinny for them. We have got a bike trailer for him now and he seems to like that. I'm hoping he relaxes a bit at some point - I've never known such a stressed baby!

I'll try and keep up a bit now!

MrsBri · 07/07/2013 21:57

I think they should give all parents resus training. I really want it but there aren't any courses here, sadly.

Hopefully once you've had the training you'll feel more secure about going home.

Welcome back, cycle :-) Good to see you here and fantastic that Nye is growing well.

pinkbear82 · 07/07/2013 22:13

mrsbri could you look at st John ambulance/red cross and see what they offer? their courses can be really good and once you've done it keeping up to date with New procedures can be done online.

I'm lucky that all the childcare and youth work I've dine over the years has given me lots of different experiences and 'trauning' - nothing quite like having to put it into practice on your own - certainly never want that again.

grumpy night nurse on the ward tonight :( been lucky up to now!

RueDeWakening · 07/07/2013 22:37

MrsBri try contacting a local children's centre, lots of them do first aid for parents courses now and again. Also, download the (free) Red Cross first aid app for the iPhone (and I assume android as well), it's really good - it lets you select whether you're in an emergency situation when you launch it and walks you through the appropriate next steps. I'm a paediatric first aider and really rate it :) though fortunately my Rainbows are fairly good and not given (so far!) to seriously injuring themselves or each other :o

Curly - my pump is a Ameda Lactaline, the NICU recommended it when DS1 was discharged because it uses the same method as hospital-grade pumps and lets you tweak the frequency and strength of each pump, it's also a double pump and surprisingly quiet. But I had an Avent manual one before, which worked fine and was £20ish - only got rid of it because I was full time pumping for a couple of months and it gave me RSI.

Pinkbear - I'm glad Violet is doing so much better, hope you both get home soon. Don't dwell on the resus training!

Pinkapples - DS1 was a tummy sleeper, and DS2 has headed the same way. Both startle themselves awake about every 20 minutes unless they're lying on their sides or fronts. It about killed us until we worked out what was going on and how to fix it! Completely different to DD, who just liked being swaddled like a little sausage roll every nap/bed time.

AmIGoingMad · 07/07/2013 23:44

Pinkbear I'm so glad to hear that violet is much better now! Thank goodness for that.

Mrsbri our HV did some first aid stuff with us last time around- choking, resus etc. I'm not sure if they still do it as we haven't seen her this time yet but it might be worth you asking?

Lovely name hawkmoth!

Lovely to hear from you cycle and great that Nye is doing well!

Well my boobs are like rocks today! Milk seems to be coming in even tho I'm not using it. Am hoping it will settle quickly and painlessly as it did last time.
Mw came to weigh dd today as they were too busy to come out yesterday. She says that she's only lost 0.45g so is now 9lb 1. Interesting.... she was 8lb15 born. So having lost a small amount of weight she now weighs more than she did born?! I swear I'd be more shocked if they told me something that made sense with the experience I've had with them!

I'm struggling to remember to take it easy. Keep doing something then thinking ouch shouldn't have done that. DH is getting a bit irate I think but I'm trying to take it easy. How long before you were carrying little ones up and down stairs after a section?
