Yep, just keep doing it til he gets it.

And then bring it forward when he is consistent.

O naturally brought his bedtime forward, although like someone else (is it MM?) he is flexible between 7.30-9, which suits us as we need that sometimes. He generally goes at 7.30 but we can keep him up longer if needs be.

YellowWellies · 29/04/2013 16:54

Izzy my only thought would be that he might like the comfort of BF to send him off to sleep? Bottles might be best for when you don't want him to wake and feed? Whereas you want to encourage a good tank up BF before bed?

gardenpixie32 · 29/04/2013 17:59

Hi everyone. I have missed loads of threads and have given up posting but I am starting to tear my hair out and I am really hoping for some advice.

The girls are 7 months today and sleep ALL the time! Now, I am not bragging, it is very frustrating. We get nothing done. Everything is done in a rush so they don't get sleepy. When they do get sleepy, especially DT2, mass hysteria erupts. Screaming, tears, cross little faces, clenched fists then they take ages to settle as it seems they are overtired.

A typical day is starting to look like this.
7am - milk followed by breakfast.
8:30-10am - morning nap (their is a lot of tears by 8:30, I have tried extending it)
11am - lunch
11:30-2pm - afternoon nap (again, a lot of tears by 11:30, this is why lunch is so early)
2pm - Milk
3pm-4pm - nap
4pm - dinner
5pm - Yet ANOTHER nap, I kid you not! (We can't bath them as the scream the whole way through, they also wont touch their milk as they are so tired so we have to let them nap before bath and milk!)
6pm - wake, bath, story, milk
7pm - bed.

They are sleeping for nearly 18 hours a day!!!!!!!!! We can't go ANYWHERE as there is mass hysteria if they are tired. They will NOT sleep anywhere but in their cots, not even on me. They occasionally fall asleep in their pushchair, but more often don't. I am starting to worry that there is something wrong. They are like freaking newborns. It is wearing me down, I can't do anything as all I am doing it putting babies down for sleeps. I am on the verge of taking them to the GP but I am sure he will think I am nuts.

Advice??

TheDetective · 29/04/2013 18:11

Not jealous at all Grin

I know what you mean garden I feel quite restricted sometimes, as I would like to take O places but it always seems to fall at nap times. We've stopped going to baby groups because it was disrupting sleep. We only go to one a week, and then slot in swimming now. The one I go to I can go for 1-3 hours, so it is good for fitting around naps.

Sounds silly, and may not work, but my first thought would be to try waking them after say 45 minutes? And see if that makes any difference? O will sleep as long as he wants, but the next nap time comes at around its usual time even if I have woke him early.

ChasingDaisy · 29/04/2013 18:27

Same here with baby groups etc Detective I can't do anything in the afternoons now as his long nap is between 1 - 4. I have been hoping that he would be starting to go longer between naps by now but 90mins is still his limit.

Izzy your plan sounds good to me but I agree with YW that you could maybe bf before bed and then bottles of EBM for the night feeds.

If you know he is consistently sleepy at 10 then your timings are a good place to start, that way you are letting him lead the way whilst trying to introduce a routine. Once you have an established routine, however basic, it shouldnt matter what time you do this, he should associate it with bed time. I credit our solid bedtime routine with O going to sleep relatively easy at night time. Admittedly it does leave me feeling a little panicky if we go out in the evening as it disrupts his routine, but its worth it.

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/04/2013 18:51

See my theory behind bottles before bed and BF at night is that we would know he's had a good feed prior to putting him to bed and therefore if he wakes after a few hours id know he wasn't actually hungry.

He doesn't cluster feed in the evening, he just takes a normal 15minute feed before going to sleep.

Ebm in the middle of the night would be awkward as would need to go down to fridge and warm it up etc when direct BF is so much easier.

TheDetective · 29/04/2013 18:54

Fucksake.

DS1 just fell down the stairs holding O.

Heart in mouth moment.

I didn't even know he was carrying him around, as I was in the kitchen with dinner cooking.

:(

Both seem ok, O has a nice big red mark on his back, DS1 has sore heels. Both have had ice packs O seemed to enjoy his far too much.

:( :( :(

PetiteRaleuse · 29/04/2013 19:05

Oh no Detective taht must have been scary for everyone. Glad they are both ok.

Garden DD1 used to be like that until about 9 months old, and still had two daytime naps until 15 months. Then we moved and her wonderful sleeping buggered off. I can't suggest anything other than trying, little by little, to cut down the naps, but I know all too well how tough that is when the default 'tired' setting is hysteria.

PetiteRaleuse · 29/04/2013 19:08

Just wanted to wish wanna best of luck for tomorrow. Be yourself, and don't sell yourself short - far too women in job interview situations are too modest.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 29/04/2013 19:13

Thanks PR. Feeling very nervous. First interview in 5 years Shock got a headache and DD1 is providing continuous, loud background noise which isnt helping.

Detective that is really scary. Gad they are both ok. DP slid down one step holding S about 3 months ago. He didnt drop her or hurt her but she screamed out with the shock. Its the worst few moments.

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/04/2013 19:43

Ok bottle one has been administered...a grand total of 3oz!!!

YellowWellies · 29/04/2013 19:46

Ahhh Izzy that makes sense. Boobs are very handy at nighttime. Maybe a wee BF after the bedtime bottle to cozy him off to sleep so he still gets the comfort element.

Given that EBM keeps for a no. of hours at room temperature could you keep a bottle by the bed and a flask of hot water / water bath. (Bottle gurus please correct / advise) Smile

I still think that if you BF for the feeds you want to drop I think it'll be harder to break the association. So whilst EBM bottles are harder work for you short term I think you've a better chance that they'll discourage the midnight snacking and give you long stretches of sleep that you need.

Actually you could even try DH giving him a bottle of water in the wee small hours?

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/04/2013 19:54

Hmmm yw that's a good point about bottles being less enticing almost for him at night. Another problem is my joints are knackered and BF is easier on them than having to hold baby and bottle :( its so tricky to know what's best plan of action!

The other thing I'm concerned about is our upcoming holiday. I really hoped he would be sleeping much better especially as we will be in one room so any wake ups could potentially have DD to too!!

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/04/2013 19:54

Oh and I meant to say a trip through for coffee and a chat would be fab! It's so nice to have conversation with like minded mummies!

PurplePidjin · 29/04/2013 20:02

Southampton Kiddicare is luffly, they have a bf room with glidey chairs, naice coffee, clean loos, proper unisex changing room, and reasonable prices! (2 grows for £6) :)

BigPigLittlePig · 29/04/2013 20:08

Detective sounds nasty - glad both boys are ok though.

Izzy I will watch with interest how it goes with you, as F is definitely comfort snacking overnight. She goes 4-5 hours during the day between feeds quite happily so there is no reason for her needing to feed 2 hourly once the sun goes down. Not sure I have the stamina/energy to break the cycle though....it's a bit self perpetuating.

We had a lovely day today with my parents, and went for a lovely walk in the sun. We've been using the pushchair sat up now, which F lurves nosy like her mum. She grabs onto the bar and peers at everything. One very proud Nana pushing her! I think it must have tired her out, as she's flaked out now in bed Smile.

Garden that sounds incredibly tough - no bright ideas here I'm afraid. F goes from fine to hysteria in a matter of seconds when she's tired, with arched back and a red screaming face. We're lucky that she will sleep in the pram or car seat though, otherwise I would be housebound. Do they not even fall asleep in the car?

BigPigLittlePig · 29/04/2013 20:09

In no way jealous of Pidjs outing

kirrinIsland · 29/04/2013 20:09

tits and GT Hope you are both feeling ok Thanks

izzy a few weeks ago N was going down in her cot at about 11 and then waking about every hour all night. Now she goes down at 8 and wakes at roughly 12, 3, 5 and 7-8ish. The keys seems to have been a combination of what's been mentioned above. DP did a couple of nights so I wasn't around for the comfort element which seemed to break the habit a bit; and we switched to bottle - ff but only because I didn't do so well with expressing. We don't have a bedtime routine per se, we just have dimmed lights and quiet time in the run up.

wanna good luck for tomorrow. For my recent interview I had to take my birth certificate as I also didn't have a passport. There is no sticker on mine? And because I used the birth certain rather than the passport, I also needed something with my NI number on it - no sure if that also applies to you?

BigPigLittlePig · 29/04/2013 20:13

Luis just scored 128 points against me with ONE WORD in wwf. The man is a genius.

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 29/04/2013 20:13

kirrin are you still BF during the day? That looks like you've managed to do quite well then. I could cope with a night feed or two if I knew I'd get a big chunk when I went to bed. It would mean I could have an early night if I wanted and get a really good chunk!

ChasingDaisy · 29/04/2013 20:17

pig I almost feel embarrassed playing against Luis, he's too good

fruitpastilles · 29/04/2013 20:22

wanna good luck for tomorrow!

Yes luis always beats me as well.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 29/04/2013 20:26

I have my P45 from 2008 kirrin so I am taking that. :) Odd that your BC doesnt have a sticker. Mine looks really obvious that its missing.

DPs BC is taped together so he reckons it should be ok. Hope so.

Thanks everyone. Cant wait to get it over with now!

TheDetective · 29/04/2013 20:40

Do you mean like a water seal or whatever they are called?

Mine has nothing on it as far as I know.

O went down easily tonight. Too easily. Obviously I am now going to worry all bloody night. Doing 20 minute checks.

He had a proper melt down in the bath tonight. So he screamed and screamed and screamed while we dried and dressed him. He took his feed, and went to sleep minus any sleep props. Just swaddled. He didn't need his comfort blanket or white noise, or rocking either. Rare that happens.... rare.

Confused

He didn't bump his head as far as I know, just his back. But I'm still going to worry all night.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 29/04/2013 20:47

No, its a wee purple sticker that has the price and the date ordered (I think) on it.

I am in N.Ireland. Maybe we have different ones.
