Congrats on your new nephew Weejo.

Sorry about the job Pidge.

Hope T is feeling better today Stacks.

Completely understand about the human dummy thing WL. Definitely how I ended up with DS1 and seem to be heading down the same path again despite some early hopeful signs of self-settling. Don't mind him using feeding to comfort at all, but would be better if it was not the only way he'd sleep at night. Good luck and keep us updated as to what works.

N had his first taste of food yesterday - tried him with a bit of banana. He had a go at grabbing it, and no issue with him putting it to his mouth. Don't think he really knew what to make of it though and spat most of it out. He did get upset when he dropped it on the floor and it was binned though.

WLmum · 03/05/2013 08:31

Poor you isthat. Bug or exhaustion?
spotty T slept on my chest quite a bit when she was new - exhaustion rather than choice. Overheating was my main concern too.

Well, it seems T knew that I meant business last night - just one wake up at 2 (woke screaming after wiggling round and banging her head on the cot bars), fed and back down by 2.30. She started wiggling and squealing about 10 mins later when she would normally insist on more boob but I just patted her and then it was 6.30!

SpottyTeacakes · 03/05/2013 10:37

I got the nappies!

I just had to buy dd some summer shoes..... £40!! ShockSad

Secondsop · 03/05/2013 11:07

Man alive, is that how much kids' shoes cost these days spotty? :(

SpottyTeacakes · 03/05/2013 11:12

Yeah decent ones Sad she can't wear cheap ones because she needs proper support for her ankles. Luckily she's just grown so hopefully won't go up another size for a while!

Secondsop · 03/05/2013 15:04

I am a great believer in decent shoes (I have a lot to thank my mum for today for not letting me wear pointy shoes as a child). It is a bit mind boggling though that £40 is the cost even without VAT. Hopefully she'll be able to wear them for a while.

Little Z is crying at the end of every feed because he doesn't want it to be over. I've tried giving him an ounce more but it's just giving him more to vomit; he can't really handle the quantity. Should I start giving him some baby rice? Or start him properly on solids a couple of times a day? The paediatrician said to wait till 6 months (he's just past 5) but he's miserable. I'm already having to feed him every 3 hours during the day rather than every 4.

SpottyTeacakes · 03/05/2013 15:24

It's completely up to you. I've let ds try some of dd's fruit pouches Blush he loves it....

If his tummy can't handle it though then he must be full?

Just some things to think about...

If you give him some food you will only do it once a day to start with, when will you do it? It needs to be after a feed, i think they say an hour? What about his feeds other times of the day he might still want more after them? Could it just be that he loves milk time and doesn't want it to stop?

You could always try it for a couple of days there's nothing to say that once you do that you have to carry on. I expect the pead said that because they don't get any nutritional value from food before six months but he's doing well with his weight now isn't he?

Having a bad day today ds is just crying and crying and I'm fed up of him right now Blush

Yep always decent shoes but now she has summer shoes she needs summer sandals and more slippers for nursery Hmm

ISpyPlumPie · 03/05/2013 16:35

We've spent a small fortune on shoes too - it's incredible how quickly their feet grow. Completely agree that it's worth investing in decent ones though. I've kept all DS1's in the hope that N will have similarly wide feed so they can at least get some use as spare pairs for him - there are a couple of pairs DS1 grew out of so quickly they hardly seem worn at all.

Spotty - sorry you're having a bad day. So frustrating when nothing seems to be right and totally natural to feel fed up.

Seconds - I agree with a see how it goes approach. As long as he's still getting his main nutrition from milk (which he clearly is) he may well enjoy some tastes of a few different things.

Secondsop · 03/05/2013 18:31

Thanks for all that spotty and ispy. Y, I don't know why he cries at the end of the feed if his tummy is in fact full. I was wondering whether, although milk is filling him up volume wise, he just isn't feeling satisfied by it. I'm not sure if that makes any sense. Maybe as you say spotty he just likes being fed and doesn't want it to stop. I think I'll try him with a few little tastes of other things as he did enjoy his banana and he enjoys calpol whenever he gets it now - smiles as he tastes it.

Secondsop · 03/05/2013 18:34

I do wonder whether this is one of the things with formula, because unlike breast milk it doesn't adapt and change as the baby grows and all you can do (until moving to follow on milk) is increase the quantity.

Stacks · 03/05/2013 18:36

Seconds I was reading around reflux earlier and early weaning. Came across this article on delaying solids. Might be worth a read.

T still quite ill. He slept better last night, waking every 2 hours exactly (how do they manage that?). I didn't sleep as much as he kept coughing and choking in between waking. Still, I got sleep. He's still quite ill though, not sure when I should start worrying? He's completely lost his voice (can barely even cry now) and his cough sounds awful and chesty. He's still smiling though, and doesn't seem to have a temperature.

SpottyTeacakes · 03/05/2013 18:37

That's an interesting point seconds Smile I'm sure he will enjoy some new tastes!

Ds thinks it's hilarious when I do the 'red Indian' (native American?? I don't want to be un PC!) on him Grin

PurplePidjin · 03/05/2013 18:49

R is 23 weeks and has been trying food for a week now - i just knew he was ready. Can they sit up in a high chair (supported)? Accurately get a spoon to their mouth? Feeding more frequently/weight gain slowing?

First cube of sweet potato lasted 3 days. Today (day 8) he had a cube of sweet potato and a tbsp baby rice made up with bm for lunch, then one cube each of sweet potato and parsnip for tea. I wanted him to try apple but he's tired and full. He has full milk feeds before and after.

Don't forget to offer water at food times!

Stacks · 03/05/2013 19:18

T seems to be really interested in food recently. He watches me eat intently and seems to reach out for my hands when carrying food/drinks. However he also reaches out for my hands when not carrying food. I gave him a stick of carrot the other day which he put straight in his mouth to bite (I took it away though) but anything you give him goes straight into his mouth for a chew...
I think I'll just wait till 6 months, he's not really sitting up yet. He can hold his back and head straight, but isn't solid on his 'foundations' leaning to the side/front/back. I'm using his high chair at dinner time though, and he gets a plastic spoon to chew on.

Stacks · 03/05/2013 19:20

(He's 19w on Tuesday next week)

SpottyTeacakes · 03/05/2013 19:50

Ds is 24 weeks on Monday and still feeds every two hours Sad and he won't go to bed again...

WLmum · 03/05/2013 20:28

Great article stacks. T sounds poorly indeed Sad. If he's no better I'd take him to the dr. Is he struggling to catch his breath?

To celebrate her big sisters bday T rolled over back to front this aft. Grin.

WLmum · 03/05/2013 21:15

I'm picking up a high chair tom so T can start to sit up with us at mealtimes - she gets cross if left out! But currently don't intend to start weaning til 6 months - another 6 ish weeks. Flying by!

Secondsop · 03/05/2013 21:59

stacks thanks for that article. z is completely formula fed now but some of the article still applies. Just tried "hungry baby" milk for him and he seems very happy after it although he did still cry a bit at the end of the feed. hope T feels better soon; it wouldn't do any harm to go to the doctor, I reckon, because I for one just don't know what symptoms can mean.

Re Z and sitting up, he can sit up in his high chair but is best with a couple of tea towels wedged either side of him. He is intensely interested in our food and he took banana to his mouth, but he takes everything to his mouth.

FriendofDorothy · 03/05/2013 22:00

Is anyone planning on doing Baby Led Weaning rather than going for purees?

2blessed · 03/05/2013 22:00

Lovely day today. Took ds into work for first time and they all made a fuss of him which he loved. Wanted to have initial conversations about my return to work but apparently too early. Organization going through major restructure and my line manager only just appointed. Then we popped to see dp at work, he was well chuffed to see us.

Ds has been an absolute joy today, so proud with how sociable he was.

Hope all mum s and lo's have lots of sleep tonight.

2blessed · 03/05/2013 22:06

fod we're going to do both finger food and purees.

How is your wrist after the steroid injection?

WLmum · 03/05/2013 22:20

We're going to do both finger food and purées too. I found with just purées the speed from first taste to lumps was too fast but like that purées allow different combos and full meals in one in due course so good nutritional balance might be easier. Finger food gives lumps from the start and is great for lo's to 'explore' food. Am going to try to be very relaxed about this time, hv advised speeding up weaning for dd2 to help her sleep better but it didn't help at all and made her projectile vomit as she wasn't ready, poor wee thing.

IsThatTrue · 03/05/2013 22:25

FoD I think I'm BLW. Basically I give him some of our food to play with when we eat and assume that one day he may eat some Hmm Grin

OP posts:
FriendofDorothy · 03/05/2013 22:34

My wrist is completely fixed since having the steroid injection. No pain whatsoever which is amazing!

I think I am planning on doing mainly BLW with breastfeeding on demand, although this gets difficult as I go back to work and he refuses to take a bottle. So, we are going to see if he will take BM though a sippy cup.
