Thanks for indulging me with weights, I'm sure J is fine people just like to comment about anything!

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 17:23

I will be getting J weighed tomorrow. He is eating much less today and in discomfort. Cough and wheeze notable after eating. He is seeking out boob more.

I have diagnosed (seeing as I am telling HCPs their job) lip tie resulting in lactose overload with secondary lactose intolerance. In addition he has signs of CMPI. I want assessment of tie and a px for lactose and CMPI formula and referral to dietician.

BigPigLittlePig · 20/03/2013 17:36

Go vq - a force to be reckoned with. In defence of gps, during my training I had never heard of a tongue tie, and the only reasons we were taught for "failure to thrive" were fairly major diseases. I'm surprised that HVs/feeding support workers haven't heard of it, as I would have thought they are usually the 1st port of call if there are feeding concerns, and should therefore be familiar with the commoner, but less serious, problems like TT. Hey ho, thank god for dr google the one and only time I'll be saying that

F weighs 12lbs 15oz today - 25th centile (50th corrected) and is a mere 59cms long. She's grown 1cm a week bless her though no wonder my nails are shot, the calciums obviously pouring out my boobs

StuntNun · 20/03/2013 17:37

J was born 6lb15 (25th percentile) and at 17.5 weeks is 15lb13 (slightly above 50th percentile) and is in 6-9M clothes since he has a long body and short stumpy legs like DH, DS1 and DS2. He has gained 8oz a week since he was born which is the higher end of normal weight gain for an ebf baby. Of course he feeds about ten times a day, often for an hour or more but it's working for him. Contrast that to DS1 and DS2 who average around the 2nd percentile and are rake-thin. DS2 is 6.5 and wears age 3-4 pants, age 5 trousers; DS1 is 10 and wears age 7-8 pants, age 8 trousers. That's just to get the length right, all their trousers have to be taken in by two inches in the waist. We don't worry about the obesity epidemic in this household.

vq who will you ask for an assessment if the lip tie? HV or GP?

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 20/03/2013 17:39

I'm really sorry everyone, I feel like I've hijacked the thread today with this lip talk. clarella and I have been chatting on another thread about this so maybe all chat about it should be done there. This is the link.

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 17:46

J was 9lb born and has grown. That is as much as I know.

bp the GP I saw last time said they know very little about feeding issues. It is the drs at the hospital I am most annoyed with, and the HV. The HV is lovely but clearly knows nothing of these issues.

I showed DH and he concurs I am not seeing things. He has a lip tie. The girls do not. .

Clarella · 20/03/2013 17:47

you can definitely get aveeno on prescription :) both I have and 2 gp friends :)

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 17:50

justone both. It is baby clinic tomorrow and I can see HV and GP. I will see HV first, and if necessary the GP as it is a feeding issue. I will not be leaving until I get answers. I will also see the dentist.

dicks I for one have found your posts extremely helpful, and I thank you for sharing Thanks I now know it was not my fault. I knew that anyway, but I now have a reason why. I am both Smile and Sad about the revelation.

Clarella · 20/03/2013 17:54

valium I saw the practice baby clinic doctor and a woman too - it might help!

can you find a lactation consultant through the la leche league - they should be able to help out somehow.

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 20/03/2013 17:57

I'm glad it's helped VQ, I also feel Sad but I'm happy I can do something about it now. I've joined a Facebook group called tongue tie babies which is really helpful. They've got loads of info in the notes about it and people post pictures and get advice. They recommend using a holistic dentist called dr John Roberts to have laser treatment to fix it. He's based in Huddersfield. Snipping works but can reattach.

Jumping in

Interesting articles here and here

I've not looked at the lip here. I don't want too. He's doing ok. I hope you all find answers to your issues. I'm reading when I've got time but have very little I can say. Just hugs to all. It does get better. Then troughs.....then peaks again!! Such is life. You're doing well. We're all doing well!!

MissMummy1 · 20/03/2013 18:13

horseylady · 20/03/2013 18:21

Oh and etienne born 8lb now 15lb 8. Dropped from 50th to about 30th now. He's 20 weeks. I'm really not worried. He's a very happy, healthy baby.

MsJupiterJones · 20/03/2013 18:27

Hi all. L has I think a bit of a lip tie but given that it took 11 weeks to get the fucking TT sorted and things have improved since I haven't pursued it. I have been feeling quite angry about the crap info and care we got in those early weeks, I'm sure we could have continued ebf with an earlier referral.

There was an interesting article in the Guardian today about bf, weight issues etc. I'll post it on fb.

L was 8lbs0 at birth, went down to 7lbs0 and was 12lbs3 at 19 weeks. I spend a lot of time saying, yes he is small isn't he, through gritted teeth. We should have gone to weigh in today but went to rhyme time instead.

By the way for anyone who missed this is blonderedhead, I've had a name change. Haven't been around much due to exhaustion & illness but have been reading the thread. Lots of love to all. Thanks

MsJupiterJones · 20/03/2013 18:28

X-post with horsey re Guardian articles!

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 18:46

horseylady · 20/03/2013 18:56

vq good luck tomorrow!! I relally hope you get some answers! Sounds hopeful that you will!!

blonder thanks for the clarification!! I think that's half the reason I can't keep up!! The name changes!!

ChunkyEasterChick · 20/03/2013 19:12

I find it v hard to write about the woeful bf support in this country w/out sounding like I'm bashing ff. So I'll be brief & hopefully not too offensive.

< drags podium to front & centre, clears throat>

IMO the problems re bf support began in the 50s with man's arrogant attitude that "anything nature does, we can do better". Formula was pushed as better than that 'common' alternative, bm. Then you get the "keeping up with Jones" middle-class attitude of people in general and suddenly everyone is ff. Then the HCPs start losing their understanding & skills for supporting bf (afterall, why persevere when f is better??) plus the fact that society changes, so new mums are no longer surrounded by other bfing mums, their mum, nan etc who bf and the "village" required to raise the child is lost. So now, the vast majority of woman that can bf are unable to because nobody knows how to do it. And relatively minor issues like TT are deal-breakers...

But that's just MO. There are other complex issues to do with advertising, propaganda that over-states the brilliance of bm, leading to disbelief etc, and the good ol' some women just can't help being evangelical bitches about things but I could write a book....

. Grin

PetiteRaleuse · 20/03/2013 19:27

You're right chunky I am glad I had the choice but really shocked to read of the lack of support. On the feeding threads there are one or two really supportive experts, ie tiktok, but a lot of their good advice is drowned out by some very loud and bloody offensive bf evangelists, which so doesn't help.

ChunkyEasterChick · 20/03/2013 19:32

Indeed PR. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar is always my feeling, & making bfing a better experience for all is going to work better on persuading those that can, than yelling at people than can't or don't want to.

horseylady · 20/03/2013 19:32

cc I agree!!!! I remember ds not being even 24 hours old and my nan helping me in my attempts to bf. and my mum tried as well. Both bf their children. I was lucky having that support from my family but both were only there 2 hours. The mws either didn't have the knowledge (how can you reach someone if you don't know how? Several admited they ff or didn't have children) and those who did, just didn't have the time.

If there's a next time I will fight tooth and nail to bloody well get on and bf. but I know more than I did now.

Lily311 · 20/03/2013 19:32

O was 8lb 1 at birth and is a chubster now. We would win the biggest cheeks competition at the moment. Very kissable cheeks. She is not fat but not skinny either, she has 3 chins though Grin.

Busy day over here, I am tired. I want a good night sleep.
