Ooh, mars bars.

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 20/03/2013 11:34

Can you get help form the HV now you know what you're dealing with caped? I felt awful too when I saw it, I couldn't believe I'd not spotted it sooner.

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 11:35

It seems odd so many of us have lip tie babies. I think we need to wait for a diagnosis before getting too excited. It could be that what we think is a tie is perfectly normal. If there are feeding problems though, it is worth getting checked. It makes sense in Js case, but I am looking for a reason for the problems, so may be seeing something that is not there at all, because I want to IYSWIM.

Clarella · 20/03/2013 11:35

apparently there's lots of evidence collected by the bf community (lll) that it makes a significant difference to feeding and also gut stuff but not many docs think important and many people give up before finding out x

Clarella · 20/03/2013 11:37

exactly how I've felt valium. appointment this avo

whingy baby stopping posts of quality... ;)

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 11:39

caped and pikz it is not our job to diagnose problems with our babies. It is our job to report concerns, which we have. The number of HCPs who have checked my boy, you would think someone would have noticed.

The fact there are so many of us with this as a possibility could be because we are all hanging around here due to problems with feeding and sleep. There were about 100 of us to start with. It could be the ones without lip or tongue tie, reflux, etc are off having fun with their happy babies, and no longer 'need' the ongoing support of the Fred.

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 20/03/2013 11:40

I agree VQ, I keep checking just to make sure I'm not going mad. The main reason I'm pretty sure about it is that you can't lift B's upper lip at all, it doesn't roll back so her latch constantly leaks air.

capedcrusader25 · 20/03/2013 11:41

I'm taking her to the gp this week, the hv will just suggest I do that anyway. I am a bit concerned about her feeding anyway and it really looks like a bad one, all the way down between her teeth to the bottom of her gum basically. I'm off to the dentist soon too so will take her along with me.
I guess the whole beating myself up thing is part and parcel of being a parent and I probably feel a bit more sensitive as her 4 month regression/growth spurt has literally lasted the longest it possibly can and is still going on. I haven't slept more than 4 hours since months before she was born. Bleh. This too shall pass - right?! It's sweary Wednesday isn't it? Fucking bastard cunty wank stains :(

Clarella · 20/03/2013 11:41

not read all posts but if not a feeding issue it's not a probelm tho might be worth watching as they develop speak etc. you can ask for referral to see if necessary or not. it is pretty common but so mmuch depends on rest of mouth etc

Clarella · 20/03/2013 11:49

I wish I'd understood / heeded suggestions from bf advisors. I assumed it was checked.

PetiteRaleuse · 20/03/2013 12:07

Paed just phoned back. She thinks the ear drum has perforated. Is v surprised as yesterday when she cleaned the ears there didn't seem to be anything wrong other than the symptoms I have been describing the last few days. She says she seems better because pressure on the ear drum will have been released. I'm going in a little later in the afternoon to let her have a quick look and she is preparing a prescription. Am utting àpic on fb so the medically minded of you can have a look.

kissyfur · 20/03/2013 12:18

Can't believe I haven't checked it before tbh, feel sad with myself but you are right VQ we can't know everything

Passmethecrisps · 20/03/2013 12:23

Big Sad face for all the poorlyness going on here.

A perforated ear drum sounds horrible PR. Will that not really hurt?

The lip tie sounds pretty awful as well. It is simply amazing how many problems there are which don't seem to be common knowledge amongst the medical profession.

Did I say that I asked my GP about weaning P off her meds? He shrugged his shoulders and said "drop and dose and hope for the best". He had no idea if there was any process or even have any advice. He is a lovely guy and I wonder if I ask too much of him but meh.

In other news, P just woke herself up doing a crunch. The girl is obsessed. She is also covered in horrible rough patches and has a raised red rash on her torso. DH and I both think she will be developing pretty nasty eczema and DH said to me "she's likely to be asthmatic as well then isn't she?" Well, I had a wee burl on the hamster wheel of guilt as the benefits of breastfeeding in preventing these conditions was made very clear. Humph.

I am not bothering checking P's lips - it'll be just another thing for the GP to stare blankly at me for.

ChasingDaisy · 20/03/2013 12:26

pass looks like O is developing eczema too, on top of his dry skin problems.

Both me and his dad have asthma, so its fairly likely he will get this to. I was breastfed though and am afflicted with both, so don't be too hard on yourself.

ChasingDaisy · 20/03/2013 12:29

Is there anything I can do about the red, rough patches of skin developing around his elbows? Seems eczema like.

Baby massage at baby group today. First time for both of us and given O's propensity to cry at groups I am not hopeful of it going well. He is napping now, so going to leave it until the last possible moment before waking him to leave.

Passmethecrisps · 20/03/2013 12:33

Give him plenty of nap time daisy. P does ok at groups because she has lots to look at - as long as O is rested he should be fine.

As for the patches stunt and someone else who escapes me (toomany? rooty?) gave me lots of great advice.

I have been massaging P after her bath using the epiderm lotion that the HV gave me. I make sure it is really well rubbed in. stunt have a great tip which was layering Vaseline on top of the cream for really dry patches. I do P's legs pretty much every nappy change and they look much better so I think I will try to do her arms then as well.

PetiteRaleuse · 20/03/2013 12:40

La Roche Posay Cicaplast vit B5 was our first port of call for rough dry patches of skin, recommended by our Dr.

I have no experience of ear problems so no idea why she should be better when it looks so much worse, but will ask for proper explanarion yesterday. Don't know if I should be pissed off her ears were given all clear only 24 hours ago? Dr seemed surprised and she did look very carefully and clean them herself.

VQ it looks like wax and doesn't smell.

She's sat on my knee right now laughing as she throws rocks herself back and forth. Not done that in a few days so she is definitely feeling better. Very weird.

Will this never end?

Clarella · 20/03/2013 13:15

vq I couldn't keep up with Fred due to all the feeding issues!

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 13:18

pr not surprised at all at perforation due to amount of goo you described. The ear drum is a watertight barrier between inner and outer ear. If there is an infection or problem, goo builds up and has nowhere to go, hence pain and risk of perforation, when it goes pop. Dr may have helped the process along yesterday by cleaning ear. It would have hurt more before than now as it is all draining. (I am not a doctor)

ValiumQueen · 20/03/2013 13:20

pass expect the fish by courier shortly. Please remove from tin before slapping yourself. It is not your fault honey, you have done everything you could possibly have done for your wee baby x

PetiteRaleuse · 20/03/2013 13:27

Pass don't feel guilty re bf. Ezcema and asthma runs right through my family and we were all bf. Right through DH's his family too and he and his sister were ff.

Clarella · 20/03/2013 13:30

we were prescribed aveeno for dry skin

i find sudocrem and vaseline works

BigPigLittlePig · 20/03/2013 13:33

PR the middle ear is a contained space, so any fluid/pus building up causes increased pressure and pain. When the ear drum ruptures, the pressure is instantly relieved and the pain goes away - and all the crud can drain out. May have been what happened. May just be lots of gunky wax

Am inexplicably tired and thus exceedingly grumpy today. Fish slaps, Brew and mars bars to those that need it.

Off to get F weighed and measured, if you listen closely you'll hear the screams of a very fucking cross baby being stretched out to measure.

BigPigLittlePig · 20/03/2013 13:36

Just nearly SHIT MYSELF because the tv wasn't there. Thought we'd been burgled and was waiting for axe-wielding burglar to jump out etc etc then realised the fucking cat had knocked the fucking tv off the back of the tv stand. Fucking heart is fucking pounding.

Thank fuck for sweary Wednesday.
As you were.

ChunkyEasterChick · 20/03/2013 13:47

Haven't caught up & no chance with a over-tired baby & a potty training toddler having been out today (I was on a self-imposed sofa-confinement)...

On tongue & lip ties. I was told that DS's was posterior - it wasn't. It was a 90% anterior tie & HUGELY obvious. If it hadn't been for me double-checking it repeatedly & pushing for a review, being on a bf support group on FB, and hence knowing over mums with a similar experience & having bf DD & knowing it wasn't right, it would have been left. It didn't impact hugely on feeding but it may have impacted on weaning & speech.

I was told 1 in 7 babies, particularly boys, have TT so I am surprised that I believed there was only 3 or 4 that said their dc was TT initially; that number should be more like 3 times that surely?? If people do have TT diagnosed now, that wouldn't be unexpected. Primarily because, since ff became so common, the diagnosis skills have been lost. There is a good website (think its Milk Matters) where you can get a private diagnosis & treatment if NEC. NHS will only do treatment prior to 6mo & for bf issues. If you are ff, it won't be done on NHS as that's not in line with NICE guidance.

PR perforated ear drum? Ouch!!! I think ear tugging is a sign of an ear ache.

We've had 2 poos on the potty today and 1 wee accident at toddler grp (straight after we'd just "tried" & when DS was due a feed, typical!!!).

pass I had mild eczema & severe asthma as a child & bf for 9mths. Dsis neither & also bf for 9mths. If its in your genes, its in your genes... My dc have/had dry skin, with red v dry patches at times, as babies but DD seems to have grown out of it.
