sweetpea I meant to start with veg for that reason but I'm having real trouble motivating myself to puree those damn carrots. I'm giving LO a day or two off. DD1 ate the remaining bananas last night and LO has her jabs tomorrow, so Friday I will get on with those bloody carrots. Three days of that then three days of something else, probably sweet potato or courgette.

sweetpea1112 · 06/03/2013 10:32

That's exactly the sorts of veg I was thinking of trying PR so really interested to hear how you get on.

O is one of the younger babies at 14 weeks today so I can pick up lots of tips from all your trials before I start Grin

PetiteRaleuse · 06/03/2013 10:36

Can't believe that LO will be 20 weeks on Friday. It's kind of sad.

YellowWellies · 06/03/2013 10:42

PR do you do one food for three days so its easier to spot an adverse reaction?

Dairy and soy free home made steak and ale pie in the oven with spicy roasted parsnips. Time for feet up methinks as someone is asleep with my boob in their mouth. That's DS BTW not the postman Grin Dirty birds!!!!

Pass great advice to MM store and observe your feelings now and make decisions when life is on a more even keel. Don't brush them under the carpet but don't do anything which would let DP dismiss you as being a hysterical woman. Hope Tilly's skin gets sorted asap - great news on the dermatologist xx

I'm really looking forward to next week's Scottish meet up!

ValiumQueen · 06/03/2013 10:45

I have used baby rice with both of mine and plan to again with J. My first food will be baby rice mixed with formula, then that with veg then fruit added. I find it is useful to have to thicken foods as some puréed food can be very watery. I add a new food every three days. I love weaning, and add finger foods at 6 months. I always end up throwing half a pack of baby rice away though, as once sweet potato is on the menu, it is not needed. Mmm! I love sweet potato!

I keep a record of dates new foods are added, introduce food firstly at lunch, then build up to three times a day. I have thousands of little pots and initially batch cook and freeze in ice cube trays from Ikea, then put in tubs. Each evening I take a little pot and fill it with the meals for the next day, so for example a couple of apple cubes for breakfast to mix with cereal or porridge, sweet pot, carrot and pea for lunch, and courgette carrot and apple for tea. When I start cooking with meat and chicken, I do proper meals then blend and freeze in the pots in portion sizes. I label them all, or colour code as I have so many frigging pots!

ValiumQueen · 06/03/2013 10:48

PR are your carrots a bit mouldy now?

DD1 had everything organic.

DD2 had everything value.

DS will have value too. I have thought about frozen, but I will get fresh.

PetiteRaleuse · 06/03/2013 10:51

I keep records and freeze batches of puree like VQ but not as organised :) I love sweet potato too. I often bulk out curries with sweet potato. Talking of curries, I introduced them to DD1 at about 10 months and she loves them. Bland food after six months isn't necessary, and as well as being worried about the crap they put in baby food jars, I also worry that it is too bland. They all seem to smell the same.

Yes, the new food is to watch for reactions but also because the first time they eat anything they are unlikely to like it. So they get offered it several times over a few days. It's such a huge change for them, especially when ff as they don't only have to learn to eat but they have to dea with different tastes too.

sweetpea1112 · 06/03/2013 10:52

Wow VQ that all sounds a bit overwhelming. What do I need to buy ready for weaning? Spoons, bowls etc...

PetiteRaleuse · 06/03/2013 10:54

I bought new carrots VQ and new courgettes :o

I don't worry too much about organic anything, as long as it is fresh (or frozen veg but must be frozen from fresh and nothing added and French) and relatively local if possible (sweet potato being my imported luxury) We get a lot of our fruit and veg from the local market, and our meat is local too.

I won't pay the premium for organic it's too much.

PetiteRaleuse · 06/03/2013 10:56

I used those avent containers for breastmilk and normal teaspoons for purees. Fnger food you can use the tra of the high chair. I found plastic plates just got picked up and thrown (French children DO throw food) and the dg would always get to it before me.

Kyzordz · 06/03/2013 10:59

I have yet to read back through the thread. I am sorely confused after 4 month check.

She said he drinks far too much (35-40oz a day) and I need to cut out the dream feed. She said (despite saying he isn't allowed anything but milk) maybe he isn't always hungry but is thirsty. I do try him with water regularly through the day.

She said not to even think of weaning before 5 months because of silent reflux. yw as the resident reflux expert does that go with what you think?

I was considering letting him have tastes of home made puréed things within the next few weeks but shes scared the bejesus out of me, feel like I'm over feeding him and doing everything wrong. She said if he is messing with a bottle he doesn't want it and leave him alone. But, if I do that, say he has 4oz and messes, if I left it he would be hungry in 2 hours (I have tried!) and so will actually total more food/the same. She said when he has food I must massively reduce the amount of milk he has because he will be obese.

Now I don't know my head from my arse again :( fuckballs :( will catch up when he feeds

BigPigLittlePig · 06/03/2013 11:00

Fucking wankbadgery cunting colds.
Bad night. Snot. Meltdowns. Runny bums. Vom in my hair. 100% cot-dodger.

Had to go out and do the food shopping this morning, F screamed the whole way around the shop, so ended up wrestling trolley in 1 arm, baby in the other. Lovely lady helped pushing the trolley and packing though so managed to get out the shop a bit quicker.

Thanks to everyone (so it seems) for the general shittyness.

We're supposed to be going out tonight. F has her jabs this afternoon, and is a snot-monkey - sneaky feeling I'll be staying in with muslins and calpol. Just had chocolate poptarts for breakfast, and plan to have some cake in a minute. Feed a cold, right even if it's not your own?

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 06/03/2013 11:02

Morning sodding cockstorm balls! ( I love the foul-o-mastic!)

To give some of you hope, we had a good night here. After a week of playing dummy tennis I ordered some NUK dummies and they are a great success. LO went to bed at 7pm with said dummy, and didn't wake until 3.30am, result. The mouthpiece is curved and the teat shaped which seems to keep it in the mouth better. She then slept from 4am-8am. As a result of feeling so refreshed this morning I have walked to school and back (2miles) and I've done the 30 day shred! Jillian Michael's is a bitch, but I love her also.

Great to hear things ate going well eliza

Sorry you had such a stressful day detective, there is nothing more stressful than your baby refusing to feed, big hugs.

Sorry you're having such a crap time mm, what do you want to retrain in? Just give DH s swift kick in the balls! (Only kidding)

Hugs to pp too, you sound quite down at the moment, please speak to someone if this is the case xx

ValiumQueen · 06/03/2013 11:02

sweetpea that is just my way. You do not have to do it that way. I have two older kids so need to be able to just grab stuff, so bulk cook in advance. Also mine go to childcare fairly early so I need to be organised in that respect. BLW is the complete opposite I think and may suit you better.

You do not need to buy anything really, but I would recommend getting some soft tip spoons for their delicate little mouths if you are going down the spoon route. Mine each have a vintage porringer, as I did as a child. I also have some Ikea bowls in case.

Bibs depend on the child. DD1 used to get plastered with food. She would aim for her mouth and hit her arm. Still does actually. I bought Silly Billyz long sleeve bibs that are the mutts nuts, and will do DS, even though they are pink.

DD2 never misses her mouth, but sometimes drops stuff before reaching the mouth, so she was better suited to a trough bib, a solid one, Tommee Tippee I think. She never gave me a dirty bib as would hoover the trough out first.

YellowWellies · 06/03/2013 11:06

Kyz yep we were told not to wean until six months as reflux means there is a higher choking risk on solids and as CMPI can mean an increased risk of allergies / stomach damage. I'm off to see the dietician when he's 5.5 months to discuss in more detail.

PetiteRaleuse · 06/03/2013 11:07

Do they do jabs when they're ill?

Fuck I have been shat on twice this morning.

PetiteRaleuse · 06/03/2013 11:12

I meant that the Avent breastmilk containers are useful as puree containers. And for servings of casserole or stews and soups later on.

horseylady · 06/03/2013 11:20

kyz what??!!! E is tracking the 25th line and eats about 46 oz. they're babies they need feeding!!! This is why I answer feeding questions with 'well'

I think there's too much concern today about weight etc especially in babies and young children. We're going to produce a group of people who will be so hung up on weight and looks its stupid. Exercise, eat and balanced diet and you can't go far wrong. One hour of pe a week is not enough. One hour a day should be the minimum. Anyway.

If he's happy and gaining well then fine!! Do what you're doing. And with weaning so long as you're not putting risks in his bottle, offering a few tasters will not kill him. If we weren't going away I think I'd be starting in about 2-3 weeks. When he's 21/22 weeks.

pass will do.

Oh and I clean my dog poo up!!

Contradictionincarnate · 06/03/2013 11:23

kydorz I know zero about babies but know that no matter how fat they get - I was a fatty - they loose it as soon as they start running about as long as they are healthy! sounds like you need to go back and check what she meant how can she say only milk but then that babies thirsty!?

Kyzordz · 06/03/2013 11:24

Thanks yw, e has silent reflux and I don't think it's too bad as it is managed purely with thicker milk, he rarely has any problems with pain due to reflux, but perhaps it's best if we wait with him anyway. He would eat if I gave him food, but still.

Not sure what to make of the rest of what she said though about him drinking too much and cutting out a feed. Don't suppose it's her who will have to get up if he wakes in the night though! I really don't want to go backwards with anything as he does so well atm

kirrinIsland · 06/03/2013 11:25

We used the kong sleeve bibs too VQ They were a god send in keeping the washing pile down!

I'm leaving weaning til 6 months and then doing some purees and some finger foods. I messed it up with DD1 so I'm determined to get it right this time.

The washing machine is fixed - yay! The man arrived, as predicted, just as DD1 had gone to sleep! Still, it's fixed so I can start to reduce my washing mountain.

glenda I didn't realise you would still be working whilst doing your midwifery. That'll keep you busy! Good luck giving your matron hell, hope you get it sorted.

I am about to attempt to put N for a nap in the cot for the first time - wish me luck!

kirrinIsland · 06/03/2013 11:25

*long

horseylady · 06/03/2013 11:26

kyz do as you're doing.

If he's happy, you're happy then fine!! It's just advice. You can ignore it.

Lilliana · 06/03/2013 11:34

Detective sorry you've had such a horrible day but glad O has now fed Thanks for you, it must have been so stressful.

Welcome back barefoot

MM sorry to hear about your DH,is there a reason he wants to leave work? Still no excuse for not supporting you when he is home.

Petite I'm with you on not trusting baby food companies. There was an article about the crap they put in them as 'bulking' and the quality of veg/fruit they use. I'll be making and freezing my own.

Contra I'm another one who will only change nappies at night if brown - Dh often suggests it if L is unsettled - cue screaming blue murder and no difference afterwards. Not worth it.

Kyz I have no clue but think if LO is hungry they will feed, if not they won't - surely this is what feeding on demand is all about? I would do as you are and try not to worry

Thank god for sweary wednesday.

What the fuck is going on?! L decided to have a grumpy/sleepy day yesterday. Would only do 30 mins for last feed (usually does 1 1/2hours!) and just screamed until she crashed at 10. 30 mins later wakes for a feed Grr. Oh well she goes down again and wakes at 3.30. Think she wants a feed (4hours is good for us) but no, cue more shouting/ talking for 40 mins while I walk her around in the dark (I am not giving in and taking her downstairs - it is NIGHTTIME) She then goes back to sleep on me as I'm too afraid to wake her with transfer and sleeps until 6!

Basically if she hadn't woken for no sodding reason I could have had 7 fucking hours sleep!!!!

She has now fallen asleep on her change mat- she never goes to sleep on her own, maybe there is some light!

YellowWellies · 06/03/2013 11:38

I would say Kyz that the LO's are more flexible to change than I'd expected. DS routine was totally changed at PIL's but he slept fine. If you want to try a night without a dream feed go for it, if you don't - don't! Have no advice on volumes - DS is bf so I've no clue what he takes.
