Horsey as long as you follow the guidelines about what foods can be introduced when, wrt allergies etc, and don't hand over things they can choke on you'll find it hard to mess up. It's trial and error. Just remember food can be tasted up to 20 million times before they decide whether or not they like it. I found Annabel Karmel's complete baby and toddler meal planner quite good, and avoided ready made food completely. Don't put pressure on yourself - you have months before food will actually start replacing milk as the main source of nutrition.

Pikz · 14/02/2013 21:38

Thank you PR. will bring the aptamil then. Just working out what needed for skiing.

Valentines ends in another disaster with me in tears and him watching telly. He wants to travel more and I'm struggling with the concept because of new born. In essence he wants to live in a chalet in the alps for a month at a time a couple of times a year. I find the thought of this really hard and get myself all caught up in every detail. He now thinks I'm boring and not buying into his dreams.

I'm now in bed in tears. I tried to explain that being a 1st time mum was like being exposed to a fire hydrant but he just doesn't seen to get it :(

applepieinthesky · 14/02/2013 21:40

PR Milupa is the company that make Aptamil.

This time last year I wasn't pregnant yet. I was totally and utterly depressed after nearly a year of trying and about to book a doctor's appointment to have some tests done. I thought it would never happen.

Dixiebell · 14/02/2013 21:45

Tues & Thurs good for me!

Evilwater · 14/02/2013 21:45

Sophia- you mention pagan, and no one really talks to you as people think we're crazy.

Sounds great yellow. I'd love to learn about the weather lore.

Kyzordz · 14/02/2013 21:47

Omg I'm still getting interwebs!!!

Thankyou pr we are far from conventional but it works :)

horsey me too and pressure is applied for me to start soon. Doesn't help that ds is fussing with bottles the past few days which apparently means he's ready along with the fact he watches you eat and all the rest of it. I'm nervous about weaning, only just felt like bottles were easy! Well, they were before today, apparently feeding time is arsing around and playing time now!!

pikz hugs, could you perhaps consider travelling in a couple of years? Might you feel more comfortable with a toddler/small child rather than a baby? I sometimes usually think men just don't have the foggiest idea how much of a life change it is for us compared to them. My dp is great but I still don't think they really understand it and tbh whilst if winds me up sometimes I do get that it must be harder for them to get it, iyswim. Sorry your valentines day has ended badly :( bless you

Dixiebell · 14/02/2013 21:48

Weaning is fun. It's when they become fussy opinionated toddlers that won't eat anything other than sausages that it becomes hard!

BigPigLittlePig · 14/02/2013 21:51

Or fussy 5 year olds who will gladly eat a meal and declare it delicious, and a week later announce they don't like it Hmm

PetiteRaleuse · 14/02/2013 21:52

apple yeah but the milupa milks don't quite match the aptamil milks iykwim. There does seem to be some variation even though it's the same company.

VQ it's very disconcerting, but I am dreading febrile convulsion. Hope I never have to deal with that, though maybe it sounds scarier than it is.

ValiumQueen · 14/02/2013 21:52

kyz I saw your post and thought you had listed your lottery numbers. My aunt has five kids and I always wished I was in their family as there were just so many on them, four younger than me too, and as I am the youngest in my family of three, I thought that was wonderful. I bet I am older than your mum.

PetiteRaleuse · 14/02/2013 21:54

pikz I'd bring it so you're not worrying about it. I hate travelling with small children. Leaving for a month would almost be easier than doing weekend trips which seem like far too much of a faff for such a short time.

horseylady · 14/02/2013 21:55

Yeah I was looking at that pr. I might get it. I worked as a chef so there is never much processed food in this house!! Plus all the pork and lamb is home reared (not that I eat it). When banding the lambs tails I did tell ds he'd prob be eating one of these this winter!!

I'm in no rush to start weaning!! Just people have started talking about it and they're doing blw or whatever. I feel like I should know more than I do. Mmmmmmm. I don't want to decide I'm def doing something and it not work.

Oh well. It's a while off yer.

ValiumQueen · 14/02/2013 21:56

I know two families who have had toddlers with febrile convulsions and I think it is that scary. However if you know what to do in the event then hopefully you would stay calm and manage. Hope it doesn't happen. Mine have had temps of 40 and not had it. Apparently it is more rapidity of increase rather than the actual temp.

Off to sleep hopefully. See you at midnight or thereabouts.

capedcrusader25 · 14/02/2013 21:58

Babies can have celiac disease. - not to scare you though. My cousin has celiac and was hospitalised during the weaning process because of it (obviously undiagnosed until then). She was (horribly) classed as failing to thrive because until they figured out what was wrong and she was admitted she was very poorly and tiny. At the age of 1 she weighed 16lbs. I have a photo of her and O wearing the same dress 3 decades apart and they're the same size - my cousin was 7 months and O was just 3 months. This - and the fact my dad has ulcerative colitis and lots of other family member have food intolerances - is why O will be weaned gluten free up until 1 at least.

Evilwater · 14/02/2013 21:58

The more I learn yellow, the more I think we should head for a sustainable faming, energy, and water conservation. We could be the leader in the world again, creating jobs and more importantly a future for our children.

PetiteRaleuse · 14/02/2013 21:59

You don't have to decode to follow one method or another - you can
Mix and match and do what feels right.

I hate ready food in general, but ready made baby food in
Particular. Some scary stuff goes in there, even the good stuff.

capedcrusader25 · 14/02/2013 22:00

*coeliac! Woops.

blonderedhead · 14/02/2013 22:00

Pikz that sounds very selfish of him. Sorry you're having a shit Valentines.

Btw Milupa is the parent company of Aptamil.

Eliza I think that's a good idea, when I posted on the bf board lots of people said not to worry but TikTok said actually it was a bit of a worry, which was hard to hear at the time but gave me a push.

VQ I hope you get a good night tonight.

My nickname is the name of a band which also happened to coincide with a time I was slowly returning my hair colour to blonde after being red for ages (which I loved but was too hard to maintain). There have been variations but WATCH THIS SPACE for a completely new name soon (when I think of one).

Took DH out for dinner as a surprise, he thought he was cooking but I'd arranged for my Mum to babysit. Just went to a local Greek place. Was v nice but we mostly talked about L!

Evilwater · 14/02/2013 22:01

And in that note, see you in the morning !

BigPigLittlePig · 14/02/2013 22:01

Seizures in adults is one of the few things that scares me at work, and I've seen some scary things. To see it in your own child - I'd be terrified. Sorry pr, probably not the reassurance you need...crossing fingers for you both Smile

Going to attempt transfer now, from mummys warm lap to cold crib....hmm.
Night all x

Kyzordz · 14/02/2013 22:05

vq she isn't 40 until June. I honestly don't know how she does it but she is a brilliant mum. I think I'd have failed miserably with ds if it weren't for her, though she insists I could've done it all on my own but why should I when she is able to help she says. Plus she insists she enjoys the early weeks! I tried being stubborn at first but sleep makes such a difference, it was those first weeks I struggled with, and I'm sure she will continue to be invaluable to me throughout his life! She tries hard not to push things, like weaning, though sometimes I feel as though she is pushing it without meaning to and it's my own fault for being sensitive about it. I feel by not following her advice she might think I don't trust her when that isn't the case. Sorry, I'm waffling now! She has followed my lead on raising him and made sure I make my own decisions, I am just glad I have her around for help and advice if when I need it.

Kyzordz · 14/02/2013 22:08

I'm not suggesting you're 40 vq just saying that's how old she is! I'll shuffle off now and try to dig out of the hole I appear to be in!

horseylady · 14/02/2013 22:12

As I said caped I could very easily be wrong!! I thought it presented itself when exposed to gluten. That could just be a trigger though. I know it means food is not well absorbed and so is generally diagnosed as the suffer has extreme bowel movements and rapid weight loss or in the case of children, a' failure to thrive'.

Pikz - holidaying in a chalet? Or working! Where in the alps? Does he just want to do a month in the winter? As much as I love the alps and skiing, with a baby I think I'd find it quite isolating!!

capedcrusader25 · 14/02/2013 22:17

From what I know she wasn't exactly poorly before weaning but like I say 'failing to thrive'. It still makes me Aunty sad thinking back to it. She was breast fed and they really struggled to figure out what was going on. Anyone interested just google celiac and it'll being the organisations site up with loads of info. And remember I'd anyone starts weaning before 6 months it should be gluten free anyway. And don't assume that things such as fruit and veg that are packages are gluten free. My cousin has recently discovered with the changes in legislation and labelling that some things are exposed to gluten in the packaging process - like lettuce and bags of veg, etc.

TheDetective · 14/02/2013 22:17

Both children in bed and asleep before 9.30. Miracles happen!

I'm bored now though. Blush

He seems to have got his appetite back the last 2 days, taking 30oz both days, up from 18oz previous. Phew. Still snotty and coughy though.

How long do you leave it before you should take them to the GP? He seems okay, had one raised temp that came down with calpol. Just wondering if he needs to be seen at some point if it doesn't clear, and at what point that would be. I know its after 3 weeks in adults. But unsure at this age.
