Getting the thread ready when all the Christmas puddings start making appearances...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

rarely I've been using nipple shields since about a week (when we need to) and can easily switch between using and not. I am a huge advocate of them. SCBU recommended them when I was too engorged for Dash to latch on. I really like the medela ones- the boots ones were too big for him to get in his mouth! But I think it's a case of finding the best ones for you.

We're still not sleeping very well but even though he's nearly 8 weeks in trying not to worry as he was so early. I do feel like a bad mummy for not introducing a bedtime routine yet but there doesn't seem much point till he settles down a bit.

7lb 11oz yesterday :)

Secondsop · 19/12/2012 09:59

rarely I use the medela nipple shields and they're a godsend. As well as providing some much needed respite, they're also pretty much the only way we can get a latch going on my left breast.

honey some of my friends didn't do routines and sleep-training for months so I'm sure you've got plenty of time. He is getting so big - what a good boy!

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 19/12/2012 10:15

honey I never put a routine in place for big dcs until we needed to be out the house for dd to go to preschool. So when she was about 2 1/2. Before that we used to go with the flow. Don't feel bad, it's quite nice to have a baby that doesn't need to be in a set routine. It means you can pop out in the evenings if you want too without too much disruption.

Poor Ethan just has to fit in with everyone else round here! Lol

Well last night he fed from 1-2.30, 3-4 and 5-6 if I drank coffee I'd be mainlining it by now!

WeeJo08 · 19/12/2012 10:32

Another one with a bad night here. So, so tired this morning. She wouldn't settle for anything longer than an hour and a half or so. I am wondering if she is a bit congested as she sounds quite stuffed up...is there anything I can do about it?

Envy to those who had good nights and strong Brew to those with not so good nights! I've just had a shower as it usually wakes me up...not so this morning!

Really need to be on the ball today - we are moving (country) in two week's time and have to get stuck into packing things up, but am just. so. tired. Uggghhh! Come on Jo!

MaMaPo · 19/12/2012 10:32

Coffees all round - definitely on me!

Heading out to the local baby cafe this morning - but of course little C wants to feed right now so we'll probably get there and she won't want to feed! Oh well. I don't have too much trouble with my latch but have lots of questions about how you know when bf is 'established', when you can express without confusing my body about milk production etc. Will try and get out of the house as soon as little greedy guts has finished and had a nappy change.

MaMaPo · 19/12/2012 10:33

Cross post - Jo, you're relocating? Great timing! I hope thee are

MaMaPo · 19/12/2012 10:33

Damn it - hope there are plenty of professional moving types doing all the hard labour. Are you looking forward to the move?

HoneyMumandSon · 19/12/2012 11:13

Why will this child not settle. Does he not get tired? I've got so much todo.

And my boobs are still wonky. Can I sit on the (baby free - please?) sobbing sofa?

Afrodizzywonders · 19/12/2012 11:15

Does anyone else's baby go mega fussy in the evening? Between 6 and midnight mine goes bonkers, wants the boob, doesn't want the boob.....I have given her coilef because I thought it might be wind but no change....she calmed down when in the sling for a bit. Just wondering why??? She's good as gold all day and even the nights are doable..

My mum is staying here and is convinced its wind, I'm not so sure, but the fussing on the breast is real hard work Sad

HoneyMumandSon · 19/12/2012 11:18

Apparently evenings are well know for being a common 'fussy' time. Don't know how to solve it afro but its common!

ISpyDingDongMerrilyOnHigh · 19/12/2012 11:28

Afro - we had quite a bit of fuss yesterday evening. He kept bobbing frantically towards the boob, guzzling like a maniac for a couple of minutes then shouting. It was definitely wind a couple of times (some spectacular Barney-from-The-Simpsons-style burps) but other times he'd just seem to calm down again for no reason. He's been a bit crazy in the evening before - always fine in the day, and although he feeds frequently at night it's in a much calmer way. I wonder what it is Confused.

Baby clinic this morning. Not planning to go every week this time but was intrigued as DS1 was born at 40+13, which N would have been on Monday had he not put in an earlier appearance. I wanted to see if he was now similar to DS1's birth weight (9lb 2oz) and lo and behold he's 9lb 7oz! Seems I grow babies at a pretty constistant rate, whether in or out of the womb Grin.

RarelyUnreasonable · 19/12/2012 11:30

After a difficult night, ds is being an angelic child this morning- latching on immediately, lying on his playmat happily and EVEN napping in the carrycot!! Why can he not do this in the dark hours? Am going to wake him every 2 hrs today and give Infacol before each feed in the hope that tonight will be better.

Oh, and there's plenty of room on the sobbing sofa, honey!

Afrodizzywonders · 19/12/2012 12:05

Ispy - that is exactly the same as mine.........it's really strange. Just wipes the entire evening out with her going from boob to boob, guzzling a bit and then yelling!

Then it all calms down and she sleeps!!?

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 19/12/2012 12:15

Rarely, are you calmer? I stop fretting about the lack of sleep around 6 and often R gets calmer too.

RarelyUnreasonable · 19/12/2012 12:36

I am übercalm and eating biscuits Grin. Still scared of the night, though!

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 19/12/2012 12:47

Ethan is 20g up on his birthweight at day 11. Is that ok?

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 19/12/2012 12:59

I have no biscuits Sad i have no chocolate Sad i put out a plea on farcebook for someone to deliver chocolate and no one's replied, ergo i have no friends Sad

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 19/12/2012 13:06

Aw pidj I've had to send DH to Costco on his own as the man hasn't turned up to fix the boiler yet. But it means I won't get half the stuff I wanted (including lots of snacks) :(

MaMaPo · 19/12/2012 13:18

Pidj - cut contact with all these so-called friends immediately! You can't be dealing without sugar.

Went to my local baby cafe this morning - only person there! Only to be expected the week before Christmas. But good to get out of the house - first time with baby alone! - and also good to get to know the local children's centre. The woman there talked a lot about the importance of good bfing being related to relaxed mum and baby. Bloody catch 22, isn't it?

Secondsop · 19/12/2012 14:08

stacey 20g up on birthweight at day 11 sounds great to me.

WeeJo08 · 19/12/2012 14:31

Mamapo Yes, looking forward to the move - we're heading back home to Northern Ireland after 5.5 years in London (and 18 months in the Netherlands before that). Mostly looking forward to family support!!

Can't remember who said about Infacol but we tried it last night too...NOT a success. She spat it all out straight away! Hard to be annoyed though...she is the most beautiful wee baby I've ever laid eyes on. [soppy Mummy emoticon]

Afrodizzywonders · 19/12/2012 15:53

Mentally preparing myself for the witching hours here....hoping to hell she doesn't kick off at 6pm....midwife said to keep putting her back on the same boob to make sure she got all the hind milk which I thought I'd been doing Confused

Want to put my DS to bed tonight, have a bath and make more mince pies....all probably won't happen....

SpottyTeacakes · 19/12/2012 16:17

Phew finally caught up. Dd loved Confusedher settling in at nursery and the day was going quite well until I burnt my clutch out Confused it's not gone completely but reckon we will need a new one. It's because the nursery is in such a steep hill my handbrake doesn't hold it and I can hardly stand on it. I find it so hard carrying ds in his car seat and holding onto dd.

Shock Ds just burped whilst on my boob Confused

Secondsop · 19/12/2012 16:18

I'm really worried, Zach has lost another 100g and is now even further down on his birthweight - 2.6kg compared to 3 at birth. He has to go to the doctor. The health visitor looked at his latch and said it was good, and hes feeding a lot. I don't know what's wrong.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 19/12/2012 16:25

Oh seconds at least the docs will hopefully have some suggestions. It's so hard esp when they are so small. UnMNty hugs being sent your way!
