I've also got a Mei tei sling, bought it off eBay for ds only used a few times but I got it when he was older and he got too heavy for it! Hoping to use it for dd too.

Rubbish night here but more because of ds, he decided to be sick at midnight, waking dd up with the commotion so she wanted feeding (she would have slept longer like she had been doing if he hasn't woken grr) then she seemed to have wind/ poo/ grunting etc I think I saw every hour. Now dh is having a lie in and I'm meant to be taking both dcs to a party later so need to get a nap in before that somehow.

MadamGazelleIsMyMum · 23/11/2012 08:05

We had a better night, but still no where near our best. Guess being away from home has an impact, so I urge you all not to go visiting unless you feel really up to it or will have masses of help!

DS had terrible wind last night, took well over an hour to wind him each time so he could be laid down. Which meant each feed cycle took around 2 hours, and then by the time he was down, it was only about 1.5 hours until the next feed, and it takes me a good 20-30 mins to drop off to sleep...

gt haha, first person whose baby does sleep through will be too scared to admit it!

horseylady · 23/11/2012 08:14

Still got a god damned headache.

Have decided it's my neck gone into spasm so trying to get hold of the Physio. Bloody dogs and horses!! Am now taking painkillers in case she can't fit me in till next week.

Not a brill night here. Ds still clingy. Not sure why?

Sophiathesnowfairy · 23/11/2012 08:29

I had never thought of using the saline drops on myself. I will give it a go next time.

Chunkychicken · 23/11/2012 08:30

How old is he horsey? Could it be a growth spurt or a developmental leap?

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 08:43

Those babies with colds will have more trouble breathing after feeds as the stomach expands and presses against the lungs making it literally harder to breathe. The solution is to feed little and often. Which is a pain for those of us who had a decent rotine going, but an ounce or two less per feed and bringing them down to two hourly or so will help with the breathing. Tilting the mattress is also important. Tey will sleep better too, so their health and your sanity both benefit.

The saline things you can squirt into their noses. If you lie them on their side and squirt into the top nostril hard enough for it to come trickling out the other nostril, then wipe whatever comes out away. Same on the other side, and should be done before feeding otherwise they will be sick. What doesn't come out then should come out over the next hour or so as it will make them sneeze, which is the most effective way for a baby to blow his nose. You can buy equipment to clean their noses, a kind of straw with a filter that you can suck the snot out if you want to give a helping hand, but it isn't necessary normally.

Keep an eye on their temperatures and get medical advice if they go over 38 degrees. Add 0.5 degrees to an under the armpit reading, the thermometer up the bum is most accurate.

Hope this helps someone.

horseylady · 23/11/2012 08:46

4 weeks tomorrow? Thought next growth spurt was 6 weeks? I don't mind it's just odd he's not been clingy before?!

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 09:04

I was also warned a cold can turn nasty for a newborn so don't hesitate to take them to the GP or OOH if you're worried so they can listen to their chest and how they breathe. My LO spent two days hooked up to oxygen most of the time earlier this week due to her cold and it was a horrible experience. Not that I could have avoided it, but just saying it's a pita but usually without danger for us, but can be hard for a newborn to fight off.

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 09:05

Horseylady both me and someone else upthread were commenting on extra feeding at just under four weeks a week to ten days ago.

Chunkychicken · 23/11/2012 09:10

Thanks petite lots of good advice there. As I'm bfing A, he feeds little & often anyway!!

horsey growth spurts I believe are 7-10days, 3-4wks & 5-6wks. I suspect that, if you were bfing, he would be feeding more, but as you're not, he's getting the comfort he'd get by being clingy, if that makes sense.

ValiumQueen · 23/11/2012 09:19

horsey growth spurt probably explains why my little cherub has been in my bed again after sleeping in his cot. Growth spurt might also explain what I thought was wind earlier this week. I wish they came with instructions! And this is my third!

rowingdowntheriver · 23/11/2012 09:30

thanks petite' I didn't know about putting them on their side to give the saline drops, I'll try that next time. I am glad to hear that your little one is getting better but sorry that you had to go through what you did. It must have been awfully worrying and exhausting for you.

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 09:37

If you put the solution in when they are on their back they will swallow them which is uncomfortable for them, and if they are upright they won't go in far enough to get all the snot. If you squirt hard enough when they are on the side the liquid will come out of the other nostril, which shows they have got to each part of the nose.

I'm using a solution rather than drops, so have to squirt it, iyswim.

horseylady · 23/11/2012 09:53

Makes sense!! Had increased size of feeds as he didn't seem full, will increase frequency today rather than size. He's not in newborn any more!!

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 09:58

I am starting to put away the newborn sized clothes now. Ralised yesterday that LO could no longer stretch her legs out fully. Very glad that all her clothes are a) hand me downs from her sister and b) were at least second or third hand n the first place.

A little sad that I won't be using the clothes again, but will have to give them away to another baby girl.

Sophiathesnowfairy · 23/11/2012 11:17

I just took Oliver to the GP, the were great when I phoned and said to bring him straight down, anyway they listened to his chest and said all was ok and to go with the saline solution etc, but if I was worried over the weekend to call the out of hours number.

I now have a tick in the fussy mother box.

Would Definately rather be a fussy mother than a none fussy mother.

Feel much better to go forth into the weekend!

Chunkychicken · 23/11/2012 11:29

Aaron is sneezing a lot & bringing up more after his feeds, but doesn't seem too poorly thankfully. Luckily our GP OS the walk-in centre, so open 8-8 every day of the week. If we need it, we can pop in there tomorrow or Sunday. Good to know Oliver is ok though & put your mind at ease Sophia.

YellowWellies · 23/11/2012 11:57

I was unable to drop back to sleep after 3.30am feed. J was fast asleep - no one to blame but me!!! What a weapon :(

Also how frequently is everyone's HV coming to see them - we saw one last week but no one has been this week?

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 12:04

Sophia you did the right thing. As I said upthread if a cold takes hold in a newborn's chest it can get quite serious. I forgot to mention in my posts about colds about dehyration.

Snot and temperatures mean loss of fluid and dehydration is dangerous in a newborn.. First sign is that they are not weeing as much as usual, and there are more serious visible signs too. It's another reason to keep feeding little and often.

Just repeating all the advice I received earlier in the week while it's still fresh in my mind.

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 12:06

We don't have HVs here thank God the house is a tip

NervousAt20 · 23/11/2012 12:31

horsey my LO cluster feed ALOT at 4 weeks

After I feed my LO within 20min she does a poo and I change her which is normal for us so the same today and I changed her and she had leaked, there was loads of poo an it was just like yellow water so changed her out her down and 10min later I heard another massive poo so gav her another 10min then changed her again and se had leaked again and there was loads of watery yellow poo again a full nappy. She's never done this before so I don't know if its somethig I should worry about, will she be okay with passing that much and it being so watery with her size? Sorry if these sound like stupid Qs

StuntNun · 23/11/2012 12:31

MW was just out and my section has got infected as well as not being closed. I'm to start antibiotics the minute I get them since I haven't developed a fever yet. I'm really scared to look at it now, she said there was green pus and it smells bad. Sad it's certainly painful enough, I can't lie on my left hand side at all now. Feeling very sorry for myself.

OP posts:
NervousAt20 · 23/11/2012 12:32

Yellow, I've saw my HV twice but think they only normally come once but he came a second time to check LOs weight because she knew with me having a section it was difficult for me to get the the centre and I wanted to keep an eye on it

PetiteRaleuse · 23/11/2012 12:36

Oh no Stunt that must be horrible. Good that there's no temperature yet. Will you be ale to get the antibiotics quickly? Hope you get better soon.

Passmethecrisps · 23/11/2012 12:48

Oh stunt that sounds dreadful. Poor you! Are you getting the antibiotics today?

Can't help with the poo question nervous I'm afraid. We have the opposite problem in that we are sure LO hasn't pooed since Wednesday night. She is doing tiny pin-head poos but nothing of any substance at all. It's strange as she was exclusively breast milk fed util yesterday afternoon so the formula wouldn't seem to be the problem.

We are still suffering a bit from wind here but not as bad as she has been. We have her a touch of cooled boiled water last night and it seemed to settle her. She had a feed with DH at 2am and he managed to get her back in the basket sound asleep by 2:40am. Unheard of! She slept from then until 7:30! I was awake from 5:30 expecting her to wake and listening to every grunt and snuffle. It's amazing how much better everything seems though with a few hours concurrent sleep - even just rest rather than full on sleep is lovely.

I woke at one point though in a pool of my own breast milk. It is cruel irony that I appear to have mammaries capable of feeding every child on this group when my own one is utterly disinterested! I don't know if I mentioned the other day but when I had a midwife visit and took my boob out to have another go and latching her on, the midwife actually gasped and said "oh, look at they nipples! Whit great wee boobies yuv goat!" This is the 4th midwife to exclaim about the perfect nature of my rack - they will be taking pictures next! Just a shame they are going to waste. Ach well.
