Good question midline. At night I change her if her nappy is really heavy and very smelly. Otherwise I find the upset it causes her simply not worth it. This might mean she is being changed very second feed. I started using sudocreme yesterday and will use it from now on. I think prevention is better than cure

DesperateHousewife21 · 20/11/2012 10:16

stunt I know I told her before dd was born that she want to go near her when she had a coldsore. She didnt have an active one when she kissed her, it had long gone but she still had the dry skin where it was so I was convinced dd was going to get the virus and be reallly poorly but she's fine.

It should have been my due date today, instead I have an 11 day old baby, much better!

DesperateHousewife21 · 20/11/2012 10:17

Wasn't*

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 10:17

Metanium is the dogs bollocks for nappy rash. They have just started making one for every day use. I would try that if I were not a fluff user. I change DS half way through each feed and again if I hear a poo explosion. I would not wake a baby to change a nappy.

Once feeding is established I would not wake a baby for a feed personally.

horsey I think gripe water has fennel or something in it. I cannot find the stuff. I will try to make my own like GT but hope to work on latch and winding techniques first. Alas the alcohol was removed quite a while ago. As a child I drank a full bottle of it and slept very well indeed apparently. I also drank a bottle of cough mixture. Perhaps my mum did not give me enough juice. There was a recall on gripe water earlier this year due to safety issues apparently.

Nursery and school run done, been to tesco again. Am pooped. Only got 4 hours sleep last night which compared to the early days is good, but nearly 4 weeks of severe sleep depravation is not nice.

DonnaDoon · 20/11/2012 10:33

Hi midline congratulations and welcome.. my dd has had baby acne since she was 3wks and she is now 6wks it does look awful but it is better than it was ...the doctor prescribed her fudicin antibiotic cream and I was wary of using it but eventually did very thinly and it made her face go bright red .But basically Iam waiting for it to clear up in its own as apparantly it will...Ill keep you posted.

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 10:38

YW how are the washable wipes doing now you have had them a day or so? What potion are you using? How many did you get? I am using my home made ones and they are fab. Now using water with a squirt of baby lotion. It smells divine, cleans better and his skin look much more nourished. He was getting a bit sore with just water but nothing like the huggies induced bleeding.

Passmethecrisps · 20/11/2012 10:52

VQ that sounds incredibly hard. We are having a ball in comparison to that.

DH sent me off to bed this morning but I can't sleep when I get there. It's the same at night time. I wake at least 30 minutes before P and spend the time listening to her.

DesperateHousewife21 · 20/11/2012 11:03

I love metanium I've always used it and its cleared up ds' nappy rash everytime (he used to get it bad when teething)

Q went 5 hours without feeding last night so I got that much sleep in a row. I'm not waking myself to wake her just to feed. She soon told me when she was hungry!

Chunkychicken · 20/11/2012 11:06

Can't believe DS has gained 1lb since birth. He's 9do today.

I use both bepanthen & sudocrem. Bepanthen seems better as preventative measure (but expensive), sudocrem for minor sores/rash, metanium when its really bad. Since DS is a poo monster, he often gets woken up for a change - although he seems to be doing it less in deep sleep, more just before a feed or just after.

I haven't used the Cheeky wipes on DS regularly yet. Obviously didn't want the meconium getting on them, then his bottom was just too small to get properly clean with them - it was easier with the cotton wool pads. However, if he keeps growing at the same rate, it won't be long before the little chubster will be reusable wiped...

Is that baby lotion in the water so its diluted VQ?

Belgrano · 20/11/2012 11:21

Hi everyone.

nappy rash here too. Poor baby. It looks awful and red and sore with blood bits in places. I'm airing it and using oil to clean instead of water and bepanthen and sudocrem altho may search out metanium having read your posts.

The weird thing is I have a sore bottom too (sorry TMI alert!) and when midwife looked yesterday she said it looks just the same as the baby's. so now I wonder if we are sensitive to pads/nappies. Have put cloth ones on her now to try and been instructed to take my own sore bits for the GP to gawp at if no better by tomorrow. Anyone else got sore red bits??

We've not been signed off as baby's birthweight not quite regained at day 12. She was 9lb2 tho so I'm hoping its just that that's a lot to regain. She went down to 8lb4. But she feeds all night and all day and has loads of wet/dirty nappies so I'm sure it's fine.

DHBack at work today-eek!

Everyone else ok? Sorry to those of you with sore boobs. It's excruciating. The cut glass sensation sound like thrush to me-worth a quick trip to the GP to rule it out? It's quite easy to treat if you catch it early enough. I had it last time.

Right, sorry, v long post. i am blabbering on.

Belgrano · 20/11/2012 11:23

PAssmethecrisps I am the same re. Being sent to bed but unable to sleep! It's very annoying! Especially when I'm only getting 2 hrs between feeds at nt and spend half of that gap awake checking she's still breathing etc...

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 11:31

Yeah, about half an inch of water, and a squirt of lotion, swirled around. Nothing technical. Best smell ever.

Trying not to be jealous and feel inadequate about feeding when hearing such great weight gains. My logical head says all babies are different, and it is not a competition, my emotions tell me it is my fault. We are our own worst enemy sometimes.

pass it is getting better. DH said today that I should enjoy this as it is the last time I will ever be doing it. Not sure that helped tbh.

blonderthanred · 20/11/2012 11:32

Goodness this thread is moving so fast now, hard to keep up. Thinking of petite and her little one, v impressed at amazingly calm sensible attitude.

Evil my friend tipped her baby out of the buggy at a few months old.... at the top of a fight of stairs (luckily only 3 steps and a helpful chap rushed forward to catch). She beat herself up about it but like someone said we all get one of those types of incidents. I don't know how to stop myself dozing off in the early hours, it happens without me realising it and I wake convince something terrible has happened.

Your babies are all gaining weight at a terrific rate. Mine is getting longer but not fatter, I think he is going to be a beanpole like his dad (better than a fat little bonsai like his mother). He feeds and poos well so hopefully he will catch up weight-wise soon.

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 11:33

belgrano remember with cloth nappies to avoid creams if possible. Sorry if telling you to suck eggs Grin

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 11:34

And you can buy washable pads for you too. Not sure I fancy that though.

blonderthanred · 20/11/2012 11:38

VQ x-post re weight gain. It is hard not to worry esp after all the early pressure. I have a weigh in tomorrow again.

I also used to love gripe water and sneak it from the bathroom cabinet . I've seen it in Boots and considered buying. L still struggles to burp but I haven't given him anything yet.

Chunkychicken · 20/11/2012 11:59

I'm gobsmacked about the weight gain to be honest VQ. I have been really anxious about it after the hassle with DD's weight. Even the milk I'm collecting/expressing looks different this time though (far creamier) - can't explain why, other than I'm far more relaxed/feel better following his birth than I did after DD. He is still only 25th centile, so only a dinky thing. I posted on the feeding forum early hrs this morning because of the anxiety I felt - and all for nothing!! It's natural to worry but logically you know he's fine, the hormones just stop you being objective iyswim.(I'm using 'you' figuratively rather than you ---> as it were...) :)

pass look on the LLL website for information about positioning & latch. I'm getting sore, partly because of his tongue tie & partly because I was being a bit complacent about the latch, having down it all before, as it were. Checked out that site & already feeds are more comfortable.

evil we cut DD when trimming her nails, & she rolled right off our bed at 4mo. Everybody does it!!

DS HATES being put up on your shoulder so is v difficult to wind.

applepieinthesky · 20/11/2012 12:25

Hope your DD is ok petite

I had the most awful nights sleep last night. DS was waking every hour Sad Don't really know why. Some nights he does 2.5 - 3 hours and others it's every hour. 2.5 hours I could cope with.

His umbilical thing came off in the night and he was weighed yesterday on day 5. He is up from 7lb7oz to 7lb11oz so really pleased with that.

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 13:10

Have all the babies with weight gain issues been section deliveries? Have they all been bigger babies? DS was a section and 9lb born. Getting him weighed friday. I think he has gained a lot as he is chubby.

PetiteRaleuse · 20/11/2012 13:16

I have an update. The doctor came to see her mid morning. Good news and bad. Good news is that it's not bronchiolitis as there has been no downward descent of mucus since she has been in. Te other good news is that although she is eating a little less than usual she has put on weight each day she has been in, and is not dehydrated. And the final good news is that when she is given paracetamol the fever comes down to something almost normal.

The bad news is that she still has fever and they won't let her go until it either comes down of its own accord or they find out what it is. So they finally agreed to run tests, and this doctor listened to what I said about why I didn't consider her breathing to be related to a cold as she always been like this. I's nice when they listen as he just said right, well, she's young, was born early, could just be compensating for slightly weaker lungs which will improve as she gets bigger and stronger. I should keep an eye on it and continue seeing the paed regularly as we already have planned. I just wish they had listened to me before as I told them the breathing had been like that since birth and that she can't have been born with a cold !

He bollocked the interns for not running tests on admission, but they were just following protocol and convinced themselves it was bronchiolitis Hmm

So I am at home now and when I left they had just taken a blood sample and attached a bag to her to collect some urine. When the doctor comes round this afternoon they should have basic results which should tell us if there is an infection. If there is she stays until full results are received and they can start treatment. If nothing is flagged up we'll assume that her temperature is related to the cold she has had and send her home with instructions for treatment and what to look out for. DD1 had a cold a few weeks ago which ended with four days of raised temperature, so it could just be the same virus which would need to run its course.

Bt I'm feeling positive. She seems a lot better in herself today, and as I said, if there wasn't the temperature she'd already be home. But I understand that they want to keep her in until they know what is causing the temperature, and at least rule out serious infections.

I wandered around the corridors in the ward today when LO was sleeping and some of the very scary stuff that children in there have really puts things in perspective.. Of course things can turn very quickly into something serious for a new born, but she's in the right place so there's nothing I can do except wait for them to decide she is fit to come home to us.

Hope to have some positive news tonight.

Thanks again for all your good wishes.

PetiteRaleuse · 20/11/2012 13:26

Oh and a good night's sleep made the world of diffeence to my coping abilities. Today I haven't cried once, whereas yesterday I was a blubbering mess. Incredible what an effect lack of sleep has on our mental wellbeing. Have definitely decided to come home to sleep again tonight. Some of the hospital staff are a little Hmm about it but staying and not sleeping helps no-one. Including them as the first night I basically hovered round the monitor every time it beeped and buzzed for them to come far too often Blush

ValiumQueen · 20/11/2012 14:01

Thanks for the update petite hope you have clarity and a well baby soon.

DH has been helpful today for the first time it feels. However he is giving opinions saying he has found doing this and doing that helpful. I have been doing it on my fucking own. How would he know anything from trying to settle him for half a bloody hour. Grr!

horseylady · 20/11/2012 14:28

Vq it contains dill seed oil. Whatever that is!!!

I change during feed and after if needed. Often in between he wakes if wet. Ok with feeding I'll try to relax and enjoy the sleep!!

We went to a baby group today which was lovely then into dh work for lunch. E has been wide awake the whole time!! Quite happy watching everyone and everything.

horseylady · 20/11/2012 14:31

Petite - hope she's allowed out. Thinking of you x

Elizadoesdolittle · 20/11/2012 14:36

petite that's great news, hopefully her temp will come down and she'll be home soon. You sound like you're coping fantastically well. Will be thinking of you and your DD.

Re weight gain issues, when I went to get her weighed on Friday she had put on 10gr and then I got her weighed again in Monday and she had gained 30grs. I realise this isn't much but am pleased she's going in the right direction. She weighed 8lbs 2 when born and is now 7lbs 5 but she is feeding well, has lots of wet and poohy nappies and is alert when awake so hopefully she will continue gaining and then I can be signed off from the midwifes. Personally I think the reason she lost so much weight was due to the amount of gunk in her because of her extremely quick delivery and she basically spent the first 2 days sleeping to recover and coughing up black gunk. I've got the health visitor coming on Thursday so will see what she says. I'm still continuing with solely breast feeding. I am trying to express but appear to be just as rubbish this time round as I was with DD1!

I can't remember who mentioned breast bumps...sorry...I had the advent electric one and this time I've borrowed the medela swing from a friend. I think the medela one is better but as I'm so crap at expressing I'm not the best person to give advice on pumps!
