My little boy said his first proper word this afternoon, when i got home from work. And it was...."Mamma"!Smile He then said it again and again, so i managed to get it captured on video. I'm so proud (and pleased it was mamma first, not dadda!)

Just had a nightmare putting him to bed - the nursery thermometer was reading 29 degrees C!! In the end i resorted to sticking him in just a nappy under his 0.5 tog grobag (i tried without it but he just flailed his legs about and wouldn't go to sleep!) with a fan blaring at him from the changing table. How are the rest of you managing with your babs in this heat? Enjoy your weekend, NM x

Elf1981 · 11/06/2006 00:12

Phew, lots to catch up on!
sleeping in the heat - we have tonight put Evie down in just her nappy. It's so hot. Our house is very warm anyway so in the recent heat we have been opening the windows when we get home to cool the place down but were out today and I hate leaving the windows open while I'm out, so the heat was off the thermometer when we got back! So she's just in her nappy, I'm expecting a bad night because she does do the whole flailing legs business and wakes herself up, but she's been asleep in her cot from 9:30 so here's hoping!
dehydration - I'm still slightly worried about Evie's nappies. They're still very dry, but my CM did mention about babies sweating out the excess water rather than peeing it out, there may be some truth in that as she's a proper sweaty baby, so it's possible that why there is less wee. She seems to be drinking fine anyway. Tried to phone the HV on Friday but got no answer.
breastfeeding - I am still breastfeeding. Though I kind of cheat as now I am back at work I have to express at work (pain in the bum) for the next days milk at the C.minders. So on a weekday, Evie will have a b.feed from me around 6:00 in the morning and wont get another b.feed until 5:00, then 7:30 but the 7:30 can be anything up to an hour long. She'll have 15 oz milk while at the CM as well. Water she wont drink from a bottle / trainer cup but we have found that she will drink very very very cold water out of a plastic cup! She must have drank at least 4oz of water today from a cup! So I'd try any method for water. She also today had about 3oz juice (but that was before I discovered her enchancement with plastic cups!)
CC and travel cots - we haven't being doing CC. We do ignore the first few cries as Evie will moan for a second or so and get herself back to sleep, but I check on her a few mins after she has quietened down. She's still sleeping through at nighttime so not got any plans for cc, but we're going away in July, stopping in a caravan so she'll be in a travel cot and I'm worried it will upset her / throw off her sleep patterns, so I'm sure I'll be on here looking for tips if she does go off the ususal course!

Hope everybody is well, sorry for the mammoth post! Oh, and I broke my little toe today and it bloody well hurts!!

mawbroon · 11/06/2006 12:56

Wow. Johnny slept from 7pm until 7.40am without as much as a whimper. Ponto, The first few nights are really hard, but I would say that it has transformed Johnny into a happier baby in just one week. The key is consistency and sticking to your guns. I do agree that it would be pretty tough going by yourself though.
Temperature wise, it's nowhere near as hot up here as it is with some of you further south. Johnny's room hasn't got any hotter than 24. I put him down in a long sleeved vest under a sheet. I have also found since he has started sleeping better that his covers are still in place in the morning, but I reckon that it wouldn't matter if he went without covers for a bit.

nervousmum · 11/06/2006 20:01

It's 30 degrees in Joey's room this evening! It wasn't even this hot at night when we were in Greece!! DP is going to buy an air-conditioning unit to go in his room tomorrow, but we're back with the fan on full blast for tonight.

Oh and given the current climate, Joey has got horrendous heat rash. Still, at least he's drinking plenty.

Yokefleet · 12/06/2006 13:00

awful night here last night, had to go into Thomas more than 20 times through the night Sad seems better this morning but still very grisly with his teeth, I don't know if there are more coming through as I can't get anywhere near his mouth (baby teeth marks a plenty here!)

teacakes · 12/06/2006 13:22

Gosh this thread is so interesting Smile(that was not supposed to sound sarcastic!)

Due to the hot weather i have DD in just her vest but like some of you have mentioned i think she is missing her grobag, so she has a 30 min quite moan in her cot resorting to 10min cuddles for the last week and then she seems to settle.

i cannot leave the windows open as 19.30 is just when the birds are roosting and it is so noisey. so much guess work!

can i just say how much i admire all those of you still bfing. i stopped at 6mths, DD took to the bottle so easy that i dried up pretty quick. now i miss it but do enjoy a full nights sleep.

Yokefleet - i envy you being in swansea, wish i was there now! i used to live in neath but my folks are now in swansea.

Yokefleet · 12/06/2006 14:07

teacakes We moved from Yorkshire last August and absolutly love it here! I know what you mean about noise from windows, we also close ours at about 7.30 as there seems to be loads of kids out playing late as well as the birds!

What a hoot!!Grin Johnny and I have just made DH's father's day card.

I decided that I wanted little handprints on it. I have seen my niece bring home stuff like that from nursery from a very young age, so I know it's possible. But how on earth are you supposed to get handprints from an 8 month old!?? We settled for footprints which I did whilst he was in the doorbouncer. His feet don't quite touch the ground which meant that the paint wasn't smeared everywhere. I am going to use the paper with the failed handprints on it to wrap the pressie. DH had better not get too excited as it's only a magazine! In fact, he said not to even bother, but it's his first fathers day, so I felt it should be marked.

Rubbish weather here today, but it didn't stop me buying a new sunhat for Johnny as he is bursting out of his old one. I also bought a pair of cropped trousers in a size 12 GrinGrin which was my pre preg size. Hooooray!!

Yokefleet · 12/06/2006 14:47

mb lol at the image in my mind of Johnny and the footprints! Grin

mozarellamamma · 12/06/2006 19:20

hello ladies!

phew it's 30 in stellas room tonight. bless her sweaty little head. in the afternoon i've been putting her into a washbasin filled with water and she tinkers about in it with cups - well at least she feels cool when she's in it. had a few terrifically hard days with her what with the heat and the teeth that never seem to arrive but popping the fan near her cot helped last night and she slept from 6.30-5.30. cross fingers for tonight. how i'd love to have to close the windows for fear of roosting birds {smile} we have to close ours when the naughty housing association boys play their ragga all night (for several nights too). boo. can't wait to leave london for fresh air. hate it and the concrete.

mawbroon good for you i've not tried the cc thing yet but i do try to keep a general routine going, all the folk in my nct aren't really into any routine so i often feel like such an old boot when i say no to things if they clash or stells looks like she needs some time out - but she's generally pretty happy and i figure she knows where she is for it too. Now on the cc thing is there a book anyone would reccommend so I can have a squizz?
Tonight bellina is wearing a vest and nappy only. For heat rash or nappy i find a few drops of organic lavender oil in her bath works a treat.
On another tip what toys are your babes enjoying at the moment. Stells is mainly into papers and shaking things or just crawling about and looking at sockets ? I'd like to get her something but any 'proper' toys just don't seem to last the distance. happy nights - mm x

nervousmum · 12/06/2006 20:08

re toys - Joey loves anything he can shove straight into his mouth (he's teething!), and his favourite things at the moment are his sand pit (and all the plastic toys that came with it, ie. bucket and spade etc), and his paddling pool. As we're on a water shortage down here, i keep a bit of his bathwater back and he loves splashing about in itGrin

mawbroon · 12/06/2006 20:30

Johnnys new favourite toy today is a muslin square. He loves playing keek a boo with it. I fling it over his head, he pulls it off and giggles. Repeat for 20 mins non stop!!

Since we have done the cc, he seems to like sucking on the bedcovers! Tonight he is just covered in a pillowcase because of the heat and before I'd even left the room, he had it in his mouth. I wonder if this is the start of him wanting a comforter, or if it is just because he's teething too.

Mozarellamamma - I haven't read a single book on parenting!! Well, that's not true but the one I have read is to prepare me for the terrible twos which can start as early as one! (Anyone with a toddler will be ROFL at the thought of mawbroon thinking she is prepared for the terrible twos) So, no, sorry i can't recommend any books about cc.

Elf1981 · 13/06/2006 06:48

Yesterday we were having thunder storms but it was still so hot and muggy. We picked Evie up in torrential-esq rain but the heat of a Cypriot summer, when we got in the house, Evie and the young boy the minder was looking after were in just their nappies and still dripping wet.
Evie ended up sleeping with us from 2:30 onwards, partly as I felt like being a bit selfish as I knew she'd sleep through the night in our bed. On Sunday I got three hours sleep as I'd been at the hospital til midnight as my gran was seriouly ill (still ill but seens to be hanging in there at the mo). So I slep from one until Evie woke up at four. She wouldn't go back to sleep. So last night I wanted some shut eye!

RedTartanLass · 13/06/2006 10:44

Hi All

Feel like I've been away for years!! Having a bad couple of weeks/months but "getting there", plus had a very ill PC and it's taken me ages to fix it!!

Hi to all the newbies!! MB when's your visit down here? Mummygow, how's things with you? Will drop an email when I've "fixed" Messenger!! Smile

Catch up with thread now, it'll take allday Grin

Yokefleet · 13/06/2006 16:29

rtl good to see you back Smile
elf sorry to hear about your gran Sad
mozarellamamma Thomas loves playing with books at the moment (big, bright cardboard ones)

Quick question, what do you do with your little ones when you need a quick 5 mins to yourself? here Thomas is plonked in front of the tv to watch an episode on his Andy Pandy dvd (all I have to do is sing the theme tune and he looks round to find the nearest tele!) It's the only time tv goes on during the day but it gives me that 5mins to have a hot cup of coffee Blush

OP posts:
Elf1981 · 13/06/2006 18:01

To have five mins to myself when DH is not here requires putting her in the crib (so I know she is safe) with a load of soft cube toys she has, or the room thermometer as she loves playing with that.
Gives me chance to have a pee and read a few articles from Heat mag while on the loo Blush Grin

Elf1981 · 13/06/2006 18:03

Yokefleet, my gran seems a bit better (touch wood). On Sunday we were told that she probably would not last the night, she'd had three cardiac arrests and so they were not optimistic, the army flew my uncle home from Germany, another uncle came from Scotland etc, but she seemed a bit better Monday, so hopefully she will be okay. She does need to have a pacemaker fitted though, it's still a bit up in the air, will call my mum for an update later.

Yokefleet · 13/06/2006 18:47

ELF hope the news from your mum is good Smile

OP posts:
mozarellamamma · 13/06/2006 21:14

hello and thanks for the toys tips. mawbroon we took inspiration from your muslin square game and hid under the duvet and did a big boo together.
elf hope things are well with you x
on the five mins tip i put stells in the sitting room and then wait for her to make her way to the kitchen where i'm at and give her huge praise. the hallway's a good spot too and not filled with anything tricky or a good magazine for her to rip up and chew!
today it's cooler after storms and stella's asleep - she didn't manage to go through last night and woke for a drink at 2 but then went straight back to sleep. she had a shower today sitting up in the bath and loved it bless her. mm x

mawbroon · 13/06/2006 21:28

Elf - sorry to hear about your Gran. It must be upsetting for you. Sad

YF- I was genuinely puzzled when you asked about the 5 mins thing. Then I realised that all your little babies are on the move. I can sit Johnny down on the floor and he won't move an inch! It's not going to last forever, but now I will appreciate it whilst I can! He will easily sit playing for 30 mins which is great for me. Also because we are doing BLW, I just plonk his food in his highchair tray and he gets on with it which leaves me free for 30 - 40 mins to cook/tidy up/drink tea etc as long as I hover to make sure he is ok.
Touch wood, the sleeping is still going ok. He napped for 2 hours this morning and then 90 mins this afternoon. He is waking earlier in the morning now, 6.30am rather than 7am, but that's no problem really. I just have to haul my butt out of bed a bit earlier.

DH and I are planning a night out soon. It will be our first night out since before Johnny was born Shock. It will probably just be a pizza and a couple of drinks (not for me, I'm still on the wagon) but it will seem like a date. Grin

nervousmum · 14/06/2006 00:28

So excited - Joey has cut his first tooth! Well, teeth really as he's had two come up together, both in the middle bottomGrin.

Elf1981 · 14/06/2006 06:44

Yay Joey with the teeth!

My gran has had a pacemaker fitted and the docs are very optomistic. Will see how it all goes. Thanks for the kind words :)

My broken toe is still hurting me, esp as I keep stubbing it!

Evie is doing well, still not got her third tooth despite all the symptoms, but last time she was poorly then got better and then the two teeth arrived. This time she was poorly, now better, so I am eagerly checking her mouth!

Sorry for any typos, expressing

nervousmum · 14/06/2006 10:00

Doh! I've just re-read my post in the cold light of day (and home from a night shift), and it makes it sound like Joey had teeth coming out of his bum!Grin I of course meant his bottom jaw. Made me chuckle anyway!

Fab news re your gran, Elf - we put pacemakers in on our ward and they really do give a new lease of life. Hope your toe feels better soon.

Just off to bed now as i have another (urgh) night to go tonight before a week off...NM x

mawbroon · 14/06/2006 17:20

Congrats on Joeys first tooth NM. I was so excited when Johnny's came through. We were in the garden when I found it and I rushed to tell my neighbour who was hanging out her washing. Blush

Elf - dare I ask how you broke your toe? Hope things are ok with your Gran today.

RTL - I was wondering where you had got to. Our trip down your way is 8th - 15th September. The wedding we are going to is on the 9th.

I found a toy in the loft (I got rakes of baby stuff from my boss) which up until now was too old for Johnny, but I brought it down yesterday and he went absolutely mad! It's a fisherprice thing with wheels and dials and twirly bits. He sat in front of it and played non stop for 20 mins. I thought his brain was going to explode. He was so excited!! I am very pleased that it's not one of these toys that beeps and flases because that would drive me up the wall! I took a 5 minute video clip to show DH tonight because no doubt Johnny won't get excited on command when I try to explain DH how much fun he was having.

Elf1981 · 14/06/2006 19:10

My toe is painful but thanks for asking!

My mum brought Evie a alphabug thingy, it's a big green catapillar that you can pull along and the legs have the letters of the alphabet on it, it sings and recites the alphabet etc, Evie is really loving it. She also has a push along walker thingy that makes a lot of noise, and I told DH I was going to put it in the loft because it was too old for her and she didn't play with it, lo and behold, that day, she threw all her other toys out the way to get to it and sat playing for 30 mins!
