We were determined not to have a walker, but my mum and dad got one. She goes in the walker for about ten / fifteen mins a day while I am sorting tea out. We dont use the door bouncer anymore. All the other time, she spends playing on the floor so I personally dont mind the short time she has in the walker.

nervousmum · 08/06/2006 12:04

Thanks - you've just confirmed the doubt in my mind anyway, and as i said i hadn't previously planned on getting one for the very issue of hampering development! I was just being swayed by parental influences.

Joey's just had his 8 month check. The HV is very pleased with his progress, and he now weighs 21Ib 11oz and he's 73 cms long, both of which put him just above the 75th centile line. His head circumference is 48cms though, which is the 91st centileShock Must be all those brains he's growing!Grin. Probably all that cod and sweet potato i keep feeding him....Grin

mozarellamamma · 08/06/2006 14:16

hello again!

you can ave all my dinner money luv! but only if i get a fag off yer Wink

well stells is 8 months on the 21st of this month. she's wriggling forward on her wee knees and loves trying to eat the gravel in the garden. she's also a great drooler at the moment and I found her munching on the cot bars last night bless her. harder to settle to sleep at the mo and her naps are really erratic - sometimes she goes for two hours and others only 30 mins.

on the whole walkers thing I think the problems associated with them are the same as those baby carriers where they sit on your front - bit hard on the pelvis and spine but I guess as with all these things if you only use them for short periods of time and not too often it won't be too much. We don't have any at the mo but I tend to under do it with toys (she must think I'm everso dreary!) and prefer time out in the sunshine and plants for her to play with or balls (no that sounds weird - you know what I mean!).

Now who is it that lives near a beach ? Envy mmx

mawbroon · 08/06/2006 15:13

Hi mozzarellamamma. My ds was born on 21st too! He isn't making any attempt to crawl at the mo. And his favourite toy just now is a wooden spoon which he likes to batter on an old biscuit tin. We were at my brothers house last weekend, so I borrowed their wooden spoon for him to play with, and he wasn't interested. I guess it has to be HIS wooden spoon.... Shock

The controlled crying has been working really well and it is making his naps during the day much better too. So, last night he slept from 7pm to 7am (I did hear him cry for a few seconds a couple of times in the night, but I didn't have to get up), then he napped 9am to 11am and is currently on his afternoon nap. he went down at 2pm and I'm hoping that's him until at least 4pm. I know cc isn't for everyone, but it seems to have worked like a dream for us - and in less than a week. I would say that there were only two difficult nights and a couple of tricky naptimes.

mawbroon · 08/06/2006 15:14

oops. too many 'z's mozarellamamma! Blush

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 08/06/2006 15:22

Hello all!

Been a while since i popped in to say hello!

Becky will be 8 months on 25th June, and is rolling EVERYWHERE. [envy} of all you with standing/crawling/sitting babies!

Becky will sit for a minute or 2 before falling back, isnt weight bearing at all, and still seems such a baby in comparrison! NO teeth either, but not sure she will get any soon either - Jess was 9.5mnths before she got her first!

Sleeping patterns are eratic - can sometimes sleep 6.30pm-5.30am straight throuhg, have a bottle and stay asleep til 7am, or it can go the other way and not be in bed til nearer 8pm and be up twice in the night for milk!

Naps during the day are hit and miss - one day she has 2 good naps of 2 hours, other days im lucky if she has 2 hours total!

Glad to see all you lot are getting on ok, just a tip - dont ever have 2 babies so close together - its too much like hard work! next baby will definately be when these 2 are at school!

teacakes · 08/06/2006 16:35

hello,
another newbie here. DD was 8mths on the 4th and seems to be well behind most of you guys. She is not crawling and getting very frustrated on her belly going round in circles (very funny to watch though).

no teeth either but is sleeping to a semi-routine.

question for you all - how are you dressing your babies when they have the night time sleep? it is 24 degrees in DD's room and i put her in a vest and a 1 tog sleeping bag, is this too much?

MichMoo16 · 08/06/2006 16:46

Hiya

My DS will be 8 months on 25th June too, god where does the time go, only seems 5 minutes ago that he was a newborn.

His favourite pastime at the mo is to try and eat everything, still I guess the soft toys soak up the dribble!

Tooth No2 is just about to emerge, so I hope that means we can go back to having a good nights sleep. He usually does 12 hours at night which is bliss, although he's pretty much awake all day so dont have too much time to myself, but hey can't complain i'd much rather have a decent nights kip!

I live in Bath, anyone near?

MM16 x

MichMoo16 · 08/06/2006 16:51

Hi teacakes

I know what you mean about the little ones being behind - I read this thread and thought there must be something wrong with my DS as he wasnt doing half of the stuff everyone elses baby was! Dont think he'll ever crawl - he hates being on his tummy, so I think that's why he doesnt ewant to roll either!

Hows the weaning going? Got told off by my HV as he'd dropped to th 7th Centile, so am now feeding him up, which seems like i'm forever trying to get him to eat something!

Are you enjoying the weather - we've been out in the paddling pool today, DS has loved splashing me!

MM16 x

Elf1981 · 08/06/2006 20:32

teacakes re sleeping, we put DD in a 1 tog sleeping bag but nothing but a nappy underneath. She's a sweater though, it's only the past few days we have taken the vest off her, and left the vest off in the day as well as she just gets too hot. But if your DD is still happy at night, I'm sure what you have her in is fine.

Evelyn has been poorly for the past few days (well, two weeks now, she has a viral infection) and has been really clingy. I thought I'd escaped feeling bad, despite dh, my dad and sis getting poorly, but I have started to feel rough today :(

Not sure if anybody saw my thread re babies nappies in the morning, but Evelyn has been dry for the past four mornings. I'm starting to get a bit worried... should I mention it to my evil HV?!

Elf1981 · 08/06/2006 20:32

Oh and a big hello to all the newbies!!

nervousmum · 08/06/2006 20:58

Elf - i'm sure it's nothing to worry about. If Joey sleeps through without any interruptions, he quite often wakes up dry too. It's usually his first nappy after that that gets quickly soaked where he's up and about and drinking normally, and that's what the HV's down here (SE Kent) are more concerned about) HTH x

PinkyRed · 08/06/2006 21:38

Hello - if you haven't all had enough newbies for the night, mind if I join you?

My dd was born on 23rd Oct, but I hadn't discovered the delights of MN then, and I haven't seen this thread before (just explaining why I've turned up late).

About the walkers - I've heard that they are v v bad for babies, but my SIL has just passed on the walker that both of her children used and loved - and neither of them had any problems walking at all. So I don't know whether to use it or not either.

Elf1981 · 09/06/2006 07:10

Hi Pinky!

My personal opinion is the same as mozarellamamma - fine in moderation

MichMoo16 · 09/06/2006 11:28

Hiya

I agree, baby walkers in moderation, my Ds loves being in his and squeals with delight, but I dont keep him in there for long and he only goes in about once a week.

a question about feeds/drinks - how many milk feeds are your babies on now, I give DS 3 7oz bottles per 24 hours but he doesnt drink it all, and he wont have any other liquid - hates water and will only have a couple of sips of juice - keep worrying that he'll dehydrate esp in this weather.

mawbroon · 09/06/2006 15:07

Aargh. Just when I thought the sleep training was going so well. Johnny wouldn't sleep for 20 mins at 2pm nap time. Then he was quiet (presume sleeping) for 30 mins and now he is crying again. I have to stick with the 10 mins thing or else a whole week of work is undone. It's hard.

It's a lovely day here though. But I have a ton of housework to do as we are having a visitor tonight, so I shouldn't even be on MN. Blush

mozarellamamma · 09/06/2006 19:14

hey there

mawbroon same date then - aw how cute! Sorry to hear the cc has had a hiccough but sure it will right itself. i think your moza spelling was right by the way luv!

maybe it's something in the stars but we had a right old day today - the lady wouldn't nap at all at the usual times. in the end she fell asleep on her bottle at 11 and had 1 1/2 hours then but that was it for the whole day. Needless to say she was quite a grump and I' ve not done anything else but try to keep her on an even keel all day. Not done cc yet myself - tell me more and did you get a book or did you know how to do it anyway?
Apart from last night she started to sleep through in the last week that means 6.30-5.30 by the way (she's up and playing after that tho we've tried a bottle and back to bed and toys in her cot where she'll play happily to be fair for an hour - any tips on extending to 7?).

On the grobag thing and the heat we decided to just put her down in her short sleeved body last night as it was 27 in her room. But she did wake so maybe she got a bit chilly (i put her in her bag then). It's a tough on isn't it as it's hot when they go down abd different through the night - I guess that's when blankets can be easier hey.

On the bottle front she'll usually only take a max of 140mls in the day each time (unless she's really hungry and has 200). Bottle for breakkie (should I stop this now so she eats more?) 11am, 2pm (ish) and bed. Sips of water after food which is normally 7, 12, 5 - oh and she's only having about a tablespoon of solids at each meal ???

lol have great weekends all. mm

Yokefleet · 09/06/2006 22:05

Welcome to mozarellamamma, MichMoo16, teacakes and PinkyRed!!! (Sorry if I have missed any newbies off!!)
Been busy for a while so has taken ages to catch up! Hope all your little ones are well, Thomas got rid of his cold by passing it onto his cousin who has promptly passed it back! so we have a snotty baby again!
mb we started with cc on Tues night after speaking to the HV and it seems to be working here too, have cut out milk through the night, 1st night he woke at 2.30am and I patted him off to sleep (took 25mins) but no picking him up and he then woke at 5.30am which was bliss, 2nd night took 1hr to settle him but he was settled by 7.30pm woke and cried out at 8.30 and that was it until 6am, last night 10mins to settle and not another peep out of him until 6am. Tonight went down and settled in less then a minute! (can't believe that this is actually working Shock seems too easy iykwim Blush)
nm hope work is going ok for you. Re: Walkers -ds is in his about 3 times a day for 10mins and loves it, gets into everything. I wasn't going to have one but was given one by my sister and I agree with the others who have said should be ok in moderation.
susiss re Caitlin clapping, Thomas hasn't got the hang of that yet (although he does like playing the bongoes with my boobs Blush
elf hope your week is improving Smile re dry nappies, ds is much drier now he is sleeping through
teacakes we are just putting Thomas to bed in his nappy and a short sleeved body suit.
MichMoo16 re: I know what you mean about the little ones being behind - I read this thread and thought there must be something wrong don't worry its just that some of our babies will be several weeks older then your lo Smile
re: qty of milk, until we saw HV early this week Thomas would still take 40oz of milk but that included 2 bottles through the night so since starting the cc we are now down to 20-25oz in 24hrs
Well I think that is about enough for one day, and will try to keep in touch more often.
p.s Thomas now has 5 teeth, not really crawling forward does a couple of shuffles forwards then either flops forward or moves to sit himself up. When on all fours he is comes upto us and stands himself up! Grin

I'm worried about BabyRed getting dehydrated too. Is anyone still breastfeeding? I'm still bf'ing BabyRed when she wakes up in the morning, then after breakfast, lunch and dinner, and again at 10pm. She only has about five minutes on one boob at a time though, and I give her a bottle of formula at 4pm.

Do you think this sounds like enough in this weather? She won't take water yet - I've tried loads of different kinds of cups and teats, and she's just not interested.

Yokefleet · 10/06/2006 06:25

pinkyred I think that elf and mawbroon are still breastfeeding, I am sure they will be along later Smile I don't know what to suggest as Thomas has never minded water, we are trying him out on an cup now but only in the bath as it goes everywhere at the moment!
Thomas slept through until 6am again Grin so I actually feel human again!! GrinGrin
Have a good weekend all and enjoy the nice weather (and the football!) Grin

OP posts:
mawbroon · 10/06/2006 10:16

Hi Pinkyred. Not sure what to advise re the breastfeeding as Johnny is happy to take water after meals and other times if he is thirsty, however I think in your position I would just offer babyred more frequent feeds. If she is thirsty, the foremilk when she first feeds should quench her thirst. I would also just keep an eye on her nappies and make sure that there are plenty wet ones.
YF - I'm glad the cc seems to be working for you too. We had a big test last night as Johnny was in his travel cot in our room as we had a guest. He didn't peep until 4am, then 5am then 6am. It was very hard to lie in bed listening to him, and if he heard one of us move, it made the crying worse because he knew we were there. It's a whole week now since I bf during the night and it is wonderful to be able to sleep all night without having bursting boobs in the morning. Shock We are also having pretty regimented nap times to help with his sleeping. 9-11am and 2-4 or 5pm. I have to avoid driving too near naptime as dozing off in the car would be a disaster so I only have little windows of time during the day where I can go anywhere, and even then, I can't go anywhere far. I am following this regime under the guidance of my sister who did this with all three of her kids. She got them all sleeping through the night from 8 weeks using this method and they continued to sleep well right through toddlerhood and beyond. The way I see it, is that at around a year (so only 4 months from now) Johnny will probably drop his morning nap and I will have much more opportunity to get out and about.

I hope you are all enjoying this fab weather. I can see my terry nappies fluttering on the line in the breeze. Grin They'll be dry in no time.

mawbroon · 10/06/2006 10:17

LOL. They are of course JOhnny's nappies fluttering in the breeze on the line.Blush

I was toilet trained quite some time ago. Grin

Yokefleet · 10/06/2006 18:52

mb rofl at your nappies on the line!! We don't have the structured day time naps as no 2 days are the same, dh now goes to work on the train so we have to take him/pick him up etc so unfortunatley we have a car journey 1/2hr before we start the bedtime rountine, so I am now trying my best to keep ds awake whilst doing that trip! Don't envy the travel cot situation of last night, we have a trip back to Yorkshire planned for late July for a family "do" when Thomas will have to be in his travel cot in our room, problem is that altough it is a big cot it isn't half as big as his cotbed at home and as he moves around so much in the night we expect the that weekend will cock things up completely!! Sad
Anyway hope that you have all had a good day, we spent the morning by the beach, had a chinese meal for lunch and watched the football for the afternoon with Thomas in a little outfit with "England" on it (we looked for ages here in Swansea to find one! lots of "Welsh" shirts!) he looked very cute and was a total angel whilst the footie was on - thats my boy Grin

OP posts:
ponto · 10/06/2006 20:25

Hi all, especially the "newbies".

PinkyRed: I wouldn't worry about the apparent lack of fluid intake, my dd1 would only drink breastmilk and nothing out of a cup until she was 9 or 10 months, and she was only having 3 breastfeeds a day. I tried so many different bottles and cups but nothing worked. She just must have been getting enough fluid in her meals and milk. The urge to drink when you're thirsty is very strong - I'm sure your little one won't get dehydrated as long as you're offering fluids regularly, even if they're not taken. This time round I was all prepared to go through the same thing again but fortunately Alice will drink small amounts of water from a cup. She's stopped wanting breastmilk at all during the day (too nosy to feed) but is making up for it by waking once or twice in the night for milk, so has 3 or 4 feeds a day in total. I'm being driven mad by lack of sleep, seriously considering controlled crying but dh is working abroad at the moment so I'd have to cope with it all by myself and not sure I can face it.

Well done Mawbroon on sticking with it!
