Okay, the night terrors may commence in an hour or two. New plan of action:

  1. Took M swimming so she would be physically tired and encouraged her to roll around the floor for ages before dinner.
  2. Fed her as much food as she would accept - sadly she doesn't seem to like mashed potato, but got some roast lamb, yoghurt and plum, apple and strawberry puree down her, both before and after bath.
  3. Detached nipple before putting her down - she didn't go down 'sleepy but awake', though, she was just asleep.
  4. Shut nursery door properly in case we're disturbing her.

And number 5: Am going to bed myself in a moment!

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2012 20:16

Good luck Too! Brooking the next thing you know it's 7am tomorrow [hsmile]

Wrote a post earlier, but forgot about it and the computer must have eaten it...

Too, so sorry you had such a hideous night last night. Brooking you have a much better one tonight. Your five point plan of action sounds brilliant.

Dream as always, I am in awe. You are amazing. I hope the dentist helped poor DD's teeth. I'm a bit behind (busy weekend, so read during night shift but didn't have time to reply), but YADNBU re the Nanny!

Biscuits, sorry E isn't sleeping well either. Argh!

I've tried putting Iz down both awake but sleepy, and asleep after being fed to sleep, and neither make much difference. The only thing that does, oddly, is being put to sleep by DH - the last couple of times that happened she slept for a lot longer. Hmm, I sense a plan here...

Cakes, I have no good advice, sorry - other than the upright suggestion of others [hblush]

Too, very envious that you're already going to bed. I fancy that, but I've got work to do, grumble... in fact, sitting at the piano now, with the music open, but I'm clearly not doing much.. [hgrin]

Oh! When did you lovely brookers start introducing three meals a day? We're doing two at the moment - mainly because Iz loves the high chair, and loves sitting in it at meal times, so plonking some food in front of her seems sensible. She seems to like most things too, though not so keen on cooked carrot (but loves gnawing on it raw - maybe the cooked stuff is disappointing?!). The last few days when I've been eating breakfast, she's wanted to join in, but as it's porridge made with sugar lots of sugar golden syrup for a treat if I've had a REALLY bad night I don't want to share it. Contemplating starting making up some baby porridge for her at the same time..?

PetWoman · 29/10/2012 22:33

Musical make plain porridge then add sugar to your portion?

On holiday in Wales. Dodgy signal so not able to read or post much. Having a lovely time though.

I have just caught up with the thread and am sending huge hugs and powerful sleepy vibes to all those with wakeful DC. I've had DS in bed with me for the last 4 nights as he was so unsettled. Tonight DH put him to bed with a bottle and has since resettled him twice, but much more quickly than I've been able to recently. I have therefore nominated him to do night duty tonight. We'll see how it goes, but FX for better nights for all.

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 29/10/2012 22:47

Already resettled M 3 times...

musicalmrs · 30/10/2012 04:20

Pet, that was one of my thoughts. I read somewhere that babies should start on ground oats? But at ths same time, she can cope with chunks of other food, so maybe I shouldn't worry about it!

Will see how hungry she is in the morning...

Hope we've had better nights all round. Think I'm only on the third wake up, which could be worse...

Biscuitsandtea · 30/10/2012 07:09

DS2 is still asleep! Shock. And has been since I put him there last night ShockShock

Hope the other brooking babies follow suite and up their games.

Sounds like Iz is doing great with her food Musical Smile. For the 3 meals a day thing we started one week before he was 6 mths with one meal a day but he took to it quite quickly (what a surprise after ds1 Hmm) so he was on 3 meals within a week or two.

Porridge sounds yum - I'm going to definitely have porridge for breakfast! I've been giving ds2 those baby porridge things some days - you know the powders that you make up with either milk or water? I think he could probably eat whole oats now but I'll use up the baby ones first I think. I'd never heard that about starting them on ground oats though? Even when I do give him proper porridge I'll still have to make it separately to mine though because his will be made with full fat milk and I make mine with semi skimmed and then drown it in brown sugar.

Morning!

Well, a much better night was had here. M slept from quarter to 11 to 2ish, quick feed, then slept until 5ish. That was that, though - I spent ages trying to get her to go back down, to no avail. I gave up at 6 and turned the light on, only for M to blink at me sleepily and generally look like a baby who had been rudely awakened. [hhmm] I think she was dozing on me, sometimes with her eyes open, although she was howling whenever we approached the cot. Still, I kept it up with the detaching-from-the-nipple thing all night, although with markedly less success after 5 - she just woke right up, rooted frantically and either re-latched or wailed until I re-latched her. She is definitely using me as a pacifier. Perhaps if I gave her a dummy I could put her down - but that's not breaking the nipple addiction, is it? [hconfused]

How did you all get on?

Musical, I would try Iz on some breakfast if she's staring longingly at yours! I make porridge using oatmeal rather than rolled oats anyway, so I just make her some of that and mash some banana through it rather than adding milk/yoghurt at present. I give her some to make a giant mess of herself with eat with her fingers while I eat mine, then feed her the rest on a spoon when I'm done.

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 30/10/2012 07:24

Well done E! Biscuits, do you think not bf at every wake-up helped?

I don't make porridge with milk actually in it. I do one cup oatmeal and 3 cups cold water in a pan, bring to the boil while stirring so it doesn't stick, done! I used to add a pinch of salt, but that's not allowed now. Then I add milk and sometimes sugar to mine and banana to M's. By the way, I don't mean an American cup, I mean any receptacle in the kitchen that looks roughly the right size.

Biscuitsandtea · 30/10/2012 14:17

Oh f%%23k

Ds2 has fallen off a change unit because I am a stupid f€%23king idiot and I turned round while he was on it. I've come straight to the hospital but can't find an effing parking space because it is visiting hours. What a frigging idiot I am

Hurrah for the better night Too! And Biscuits... very jealous! Iz wasn't toooooo bad, still not wonderful though...

Thanks for the porridgy tips! Too, I'm not used to making it with just water- normally use soya milk, but Iz is too young for that, so will have to try just water tomorrow. Thanks for the cup tip too! I usually use scales (digital scales, so it only takes a sec), but they've broken, so the measurements are very handy Grin. Maybe I'll try tomorrow, and see how Iz takes to it! :) Too, M must get incredibly messy eating it with her fingers?! Think I'll try that same approach with Iz though, so I guess I'll know by tomorrow!

Just found out that one of the songs I've been working on might get recorded and released as a charity Christmas single! Grin. I'm not talking the likes of Christmas Number 1, but more local charity type thing (though should be released online)... very exciting. :) Just need to ensure the costs of recording it will be outweighed by the money it'll bring in, what with it being for charity...

So glad I checked MN before I posted this (written a couple of hours ago). Biscuits, how is E?! It's not your fault, it could happen to anyone. Crossing everything that he's absolutely fine.
DreamingOfPeace · 30/10/2012 15:19

biscuits, totally happens to everyone, not your fault. How is he now?

Two of my friends were stood by a bigish slide, a good 6" to the top, supervising the children, were chatting then and watched her ds, 15mo, fall down straight onto his head... They didn't take him to a&e though, he was ok, just cried.

Tired.

DreamingOfPeace · 30/10/2012 15:19

6"?! 6' of course...

hawthers · 30/10/2012 16:52

How is e?

DS1 fell off several beds but also slipped down the stairs Shock I was following him up just after he learned how to go up the stairs. I was about 2 steps behind him and he slipped. I was too close to catch him and he slipped down between my legs. It was really horrible as he somersaulted down the stairs landing on the wooden floor. I had no idea what to do but rang my sil who very wisely said if he is crying he is probably ok but best to get him checked out at a and e. They observed for an hour or so then we we nt home and he was absolutely fine. G nearly dived head first off DS1's bed yesterday as well.

Hope e is ok and they've checked him out.

Biscuitsandtea · 30/10/2012 17:20

E fine thank you all, or at least appears to be. Bruise and an egg lump on his head and a bruise on knee but seems himself otherwise.

I just feel so so stupid Blush

Will post more later but have shopping all over the floor, tea on the go and washing out on the line in the dark!

Glad E is ok Biscuits that must have been very scary.

Quick question, we are thinking of going away for DHs 40th birthday next year. DD will be 1, is there a restriction on the time they are able to be in their carseat still at that age? I'm trying to decide where to go and wondered if Manchester was doable so that I can visit family.

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 30/10/2012 20:03

Thank God he's ok, Biscuits! Wine for you - you must be shattered.

Jen, we totally ignored the car seat restrictions on our Dorset trip. We'd never have got anywhere - it took 10 hours each way as it was! Not sure when the restrictions stop.

Yikes at a 15 mo falling off a 6 foot slide, Dream!

Musical, M does indeed get v messy eating with her fingers, but it is my concession to BLW and I'm always starving at that time and want to eat my own breakfast I ordered a new bib this morning, though, with a pelican bottom to it to catch all the food that otherwise lands in her lap.

Good luck with your Christmas song - how exciting! Tell us what it is and we'll all buy a copy.

musicalmrs · 30/10/2012 20:08

Thank goodness he's ok Biscuits. Hope you're feeling ok - and that he sleeps tonight, to give you some time to calm down/rest!

Jen, I too will be semi ignoring the car seat restrictions soon, as we're off to Cumbria in a couple of weeks time to visit family (Iz has one great grandmother left to meet, which is the aim!). It'll be about a 5.5hr journey. We'll have to take stops - my bladder wouldn't be able to cope! - but we'll be completing it in a day.

Too, I have one of those pelican bibs -I'll make sure I apply it for breakfast eating Grin. I also have those cover all ones - proving essental for BLW - so will possibly layer the pelican one on top of that!

Thanks for the Christmas song support - if it all works out I'm sure I'll be singing about it from the rafters ;)

TMI - but, weaning poo. All today it's been bright green. I know green for a little while is ok, which has happened before, but.... bright bright green? Yesterday she had melon and cauliflower (the cauliflower being new - didn't try it again tonight because of the green-ness)...

DH away tonight. Have bought myself a naughty tub of icecream...

JenFrankenstein · 30/10/2012 20:11

Green poo happens quite often here. DD, not me that is :o I've no idea what I eat to get it that colour as we are not weaning yet so she's only having breastmilk.

Looks like we are off to Manchester in May :o I love it up there and it will be good to show DD my second home and eat yam as you can't get it down here

Biscuitsandtea · 30/10/2012 23:20

I'm actually getting more and more freaked out by what happened as the day goes on. I think at the time I was quite calm (ish) and just figured out what I was going to do and got on with it. Probably having ds1 there made me just get in with it iyswim. But now, good lord, I just keep going over what could have happened :( I just feel sick about it all.

I vaguely recall a similar thing happening (ie horrible thoughts of what could have happened) when ds1 had a night in hospital after falling out of a highchair another negligent moment of mine

God I feel awful about it all.

OP posts:
scarletfingernail · 30/10/2012 23:37

(((hugs))) Biscuits. The worst didn't happen though. You can't torture yourself with what if. I know it was awful and the thought of it makes me feel sick too. But he is fine! Absolutely fine. You are a great mum and you coped really well on your own. E was smiling his little face off when I saw you later on. It's one of those things you learn from, it will never happen again.

I remember overloading my crappy Zia with shopping on the handle bars and let go of it. The Zia fell back and DS smacked the back of his head on some cobbles in Chester so hard. I was in bits. He screamed for an age. NHS direct said they have at least 10 calls a day for that. I've never let it happen again. But, these things do happen. A lot. Don't beat yourself up about what can't be undone.

If you've not had wine, have some now. It's good for shock.

Biscuitsandtea · 30/10/2012 23:41

I meant to say as well:

Musical - awesome news about your song - definitely would buy that! Please please tell me it has some lyrics to do with brooking? I'll still buy it even if not since it's for charity [hsmile]

Car seat stuff - we were considerably more relaxed with the car seat time guidance by 1 year for ds1. If we did a long journey we just made sure that any breaks were proper breaks as far as possible. So not at a motorway services but trying to plan the route so you stopped somewhere ds1 could really actually stretch his legs etc. Oh and if we did a really long journey we did (and often still do) try to break it overnight so just stopping at a premier inn or somewhere on the way.

Green poo - no idea - sounds great fun [hgrin][hhmm]. Spinach always turns out a very dark green poo for ds2, and did for ds1 too.

Where are Scream and Pomme? Long time no hear? Hope all is well for you both. And Fishcake and purple if they're ever lurking. And our newest additions - fluff, Cakes, loopy (and anyone else I've forgotten)

Right I'd better get some sleep........
