Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Obviously I've got a little chatterbox, dd says about 60 words/part words/animal noises that we understand and talks non-stop. Favourite words at the moment are 'down' to be picked up or get down, drink, meow, button, bapple (for all round fruit - she can say apple if she wants to but likes to add 'b'), and bappy for nappy, postman pat, etc, she also shouts 'no' especially at the stairgate! She tends to have little tantrums, but not for long, at the moment she hates going in the car and arches her back and cries when I put her in the car seat, I think she just wants to be out walking!
Had trouble with her last night, she's got an incisor tooth coming through, poor little mite was screaming with pain, and made herself sick she cried so much, she calmed down after lots of cuddles, baby nurofen and ambesol, but she seemed to be in such pain, this is the worst I've seen her. She does have a cold too which makes her feel worse. you just wish there was more you could do for them don't you?

Maddison · 22/08/2006 18:06

60 words LittleB!! How'd you manage that??!! I talk to DS2 all the time, as does DS1, DH and grandparents and we sing songs and I'm sure yesterday he was trying to sing 'The Wheels on the Bus' (well, he made noises like it anyway ) and he babbles in his own way. My SIL has daughters almost the same ages as my two and she has noticed that her DD2 isn't as quick to talk as her DD1, so we're both assuming it's because the older ones talk for them. Must stop DS1 from doing this.

FPJ's - I love your descriptions - 'f-f-f-f-f woof woof woof woof' - lmao

Hope your DD feels better soon and is back to normal LittleB. We have some Ashton & Parsons powder for the next bout of teething - I'm praying it does some good.

Aquablue, I know what you mean about hurting themselves alot. DS2 sounds the same as your DS, only it seems to be his head - it's never without a bruise. I took him to the baby clinic to get him weighed last week and he even fell over in there - I was mortified!!!

While we're still on the subject of tantrums, DS2 has had his biggest paddy ever today! I wouldn't let him pull on the drawstring for our blinds and the little sod BIT me I told him off and he immediately burst into tears with his pet lip hanging out!! He bit so hard he's left a bruise too I never thought my sweet little cherub would have a temper like that!!!

logic · 22/08/2006 20:01

I wouln't worry about the talking. Ds started talking at 11 months, really long words then he stopped speaking for about 6 months and then started again. He had a great vocab from the age of 2. Dd is saying mummy, daddy, no, there, oh dear, gone, row row row and lots of other half words. If you write down all that they say when you hear it, it adds up to more than you think!

LittleB · 23/08/2006 10:33

I think dd is a chatterbox! I think it also helps that she's looked after by 4 different lots of family while I work (3 days a week - MIL Monday & Tuesday and others on wednesday) they all teach her different things. She's also the only one which may help. Apparently I talked so much as a toddler that my younger sister had to have speech therapy as the only way she could get a word in egdeways was to drop her 'S's. I always waffle on mumsnet too .

northstar · 27/08/2006 21:56

Hi everyone, great to catch up with the oldies and the new-ies All the lo's sound very different and yet very similar iykwim? DD's party trick at the moment is to stand on one leg, lift the other one and bite her toe. She is continuously in trouble or danger and dp and I wonder each evening how we got her through another day.
She plays out with the other kids and really believes she's a 4yr old boy (like ds)
Few questions for you......
What size shoes are your lo's in? dd is 5.5 already.
What books do your lo's love?

flannelettepyjamas · 27/08/2006 23:05

Hi Northstar
I agree DD is either in trouble or in danger too.
But she's much better at getting herself down the stairs now. She still has the odd tumble so I can't just leave her to it.
She's learning almost a new word a day at the mo.
This morning I asked her what we do at swimming. She did a few different actions from the usual swimming songs. We haven't been for a week so I was quite surprised that she remembered. Their minds are like sponges at this age aren't they?
I managed ANOTHER night away ( doing quite well here). My sister is visiting from the UK and we went away to a spa hotel for the night. Very nice and I didn't miss DD until I was driving in the driveway .

northstar · 27/08/2006 23:14

Hi fpj, it's great you are getting away, it just makes them so much more lovable when you get home doesn't it!!
We are just back from a family holiday to Donegal and it was fab. My mum and brother came for 4 days and did all the kid stuff, then left so we had 4 days to ourselves. DD was SO excited to get back home she danced and spun around the house for ages. She has started biting dp's feet if he stands still long enough. It's hard not to laugh but it really could become a problem if she gets into the habit of biting so we try to ignore her.

Tinker · 28/08/2006 07:59

Hello all. Love reading about teh other babies.

Just got her first shoes last week (despite walking for about 6 weeks - lazy mummy) She's offcially 4 but only the 3.5 fitted. How dinky is that?

She'll repeat just about any word you say so tested her by saying Pavlov to which she said Pavwov.

Fave books are animal ones so she can copy the noises. Still bf and when I said she looks like a little piglet when she's feeding she stopped to do a grunting pig noise then went back and carried on. Also likes those "That's not my puppy/dinosaur etc" ones.

logic · 28/08/2006 20:00

Dd is now walking! :-) Haven't bought her proper shoes though yet. Clarks said that you shouldn't put proper shoes on them until they've been walking steadily for 6-8 weeks so don't feel bad Tinker!

Dd has got the "that's not my fairy" book and loves it. She's so girly, keeps wanting shiny pink books and things. Dh is running scared because she is showing a very early adoration of horses/ponies.

flannelettepyjamas · 29/08/2006 07:52

Congrats on the walking Logic
Tinker, LOL about your DD doing a pig grunt whilst BFing!
Fave books are ones with animals too.

aquablue · 30/08/2006 05:18

Logic - my ds has started walking too! but I have only counted max 7 steps so far. only today he can get up on his own (without having to hold onto something).

DS loves his 'that's not my monster' book - especially the bumpy paws one!

Been trying to teach him 'where's your nose' for about a month with no reaction. however, i have just started saying 'where's your belly button' and he lifts his t-shirt and points to it! i think they are very selective on what they want to hear already!!

northstar · 30/08/2006 12:29

aquablue - with ds we used to ask him "where's your off button" and he used to point with great pride to his belly button. I think he'd still do it now at 4.5.
logic - dd is infatuated with horses too, we got her a rocking horse for her birthday and it hasnt left the sitting room since may. She hugs it when she is sad but whacks it when she is angry though
I was horse-mad as a child so I'm hoping she'll stay interested in them so we can have some fun. Ds is a real boy, and I'm sorry but have to admit I have NO enthusiasm for dinosaurs or trains or diggers whatsoever.
Dd is presently tottering round in my high heels and she looks hilarious, especially with her little fat legs.

LittleB · 30/08/2006 14:45

dd is officially size 4 H, but as her feet are so chubby and they didn't have any wide enough she's in 41/2 G, which they said fit fine and allow for growth! DD also loves animla noise books, like the Gruffalo board book, she also likes postman pat books lots too! Although really i think she likes all books, she was looking through photo albums too, kissing mummy and daddy and baba! Lol at your dd in your high heeled shoes, dd wears mine and dh's but also tries to put her shoes on me.
She had a night with my mum at the weekend (the second away from us, but first with my mum) was fine until about 3am, when she just wouldn't settle again, my mum slept in the spare room next to her cot to settle her in the end, don't thing they'll be offering to have her again! We had a lovely time though, and dd wasn't upset, just clingy, don't think it helped that she had a cold and teething too.

northstar · 31/08/2006 14:24

LittleB dd is size 5.5, also chubby feet. dp arrived home with a beautiful red shiny pair of shoes for her at the weekend but they are way too small. He actually thought they would be too big but unfortunately she's got big feet like him.
Also my dd is teething like mad atm, seems like there are teeth popping up left, right and centre.
Ds started school today I am so proud of him. Dd really missed him around the house this morning though, and she expects me to play with her continuously like he does.

Maddison · 31/08/2006 18:48

Last time I had ds2's feet measured he was a 4 1/2 H, but that was a while ago so I'm going to have to take him again. He also has chubby feet, they are also long, he's going to have boats for feet like DH

I think DS2 is teething aswell, our babies must be in sync lol!!

Congrats on the walking Logic They look so cute don't they Hows work going btw? Has dd settled into nursery?

DS2 also likes the 'Thats not my ....' range, I think he likes the monster one the best. He also likes pop up books, DS1 has a few and we get them from the library too, I'm just worried incase he rips them but I guess the library would understand.

Still no talking from DS2 though, I think I'm driving the kids mad with my singing!! Still, he is getting better at the wheels on the bus lol!!

LOL at your dd wearing your heels Northstar DS2 doesn't go for my shoes, but for DS1's wellies!! How did school go for your ds? Hope he enjoyed it

DS1 goes back to school on Tuesday, but from what I can gather, things will be quite different to reception i.e. more academic than learning through play. God I hope he's ok, he isn't really 'into' pens and paper. Fingers crossed xx

aquablue · 02/09/2006 12:40

i am having the worst time getting shoes...ds is size 20.5 which i think is a 4. got one pair which was too small. and then exchanged for the next size up, which is too big! and the soles are quite hard so i think its difficult for him to walk in (he is a late walker and only this week started walking!). so today i bought him some very soft leathery soled shoes which he seems to like walking in - hooray!

he is so demanding, and cries everytime he doesn't get his own way - is this normal? i'm thinking all this control crying we've been doing has encouraged him to cry all the time!!!!

i have also just discovered the miracles of masking tape - it's all over my cupboards and drawers so he can't open them and pull all the contents out!!!

logic · 02/09/2006 23:00

Dd is demanding too. She's a proper little diva/drama queen. She is having lots of frustration tamtrums, lying on the floor, screaming, arms failing, the works if we don't pander to her every whim instantly. Hope she gets over it!

Maddison · 02/09/2006 23:17

I wouldn't say DS2 is demanding as such, but he is very tiring! The climbing is just getting worse - there's nothing he won't try to climb - and the usual getting down to his level and saying 'no' just isn't working. He does have the odd frustration tantrum though - he tends to stiffen up so I just put him on the floor until he's finished. It also seems he can be quite bad tempered at times too.

Congrats on the walking aquablue DS2 has progressed from DS1's wellies (which was SO funny - he looked like he was wearing fishermans waders) to wearing his trainers today! PMSL at him plodding around in a pair of trainers 6 sizes too big

flannelettepyjamas · 03/09/2006 01:01

It's so funny to see them trying to walk in 'big' shoes (ie mine and DH's). DD has a real thing about putting on our shoes and then stumbling around in them.
I introduced her to playdough yesterday and she loved it (should have tried it months ago). Very messy but confined to her highchair it was not too bad.
I had great fun making a few different objects - a cat, a dog, a duck and a car - all of which she correctly identified("Pizzz" (pussy cat); "FFFFFF" (woof woof woof); "Da Da" (duck); "Brrrm Brrrm" (car)). Obviously testament to my fabulous sculpture skills (not)!

Tiggerish · 03/09/2006 09:00

dd loves play doh too, especially if ds is using it! I'm impressed by the animal noises fpj. We're nowhere even close to that yet.

Dd also has a shoe fetish - spends ages by the front door pulling them all out of the racks and playing with them.

Ditto the frustration tantrums! She gets really cross if she doesn't get her own way all of the time. We generally just leave her to it or use distraction techniques which work quite well.

So, it's off to work for me tomorrow. I must say I'm really looking forward to it but will be glad once we are all into the new routine of things. Tuesday will be really hard as it is ds's first day at school and I can't be there to take him . I'm sure he'll be fine as dh will take him but I soooo want to be there.

LittleB · 03/09/2006 11:06

Tiggerish, good luck with starting work again, it took me and dd a few weeks to settle into it but its fine now. Hope your ds gets on fine at school.
Does anyone have a recipe for playdough, I'd like to try some with dd too, i know you can make it but can't remember what you use!
Dd isn't too demanding, she shouts and whinges if she doesn't get her own way, but is very easy to distract. She's trying to climb things too, but when she needs help she yells 'down' which means up or down depending where she is. My mum has a little chair and she loves sitting in at her house and I was thinking about getting one for our house but a friend said she'll just use it to climb and its not worth the hassle, what do others with older children think, what do you do? She looks so happy and pleased sitting in her chair like a grown up!

aquablue · 03/09/2006 14:11

LittleB - funny i was just checking out Michael Smith's (i've just discovered him on cable tv!) website and he's got a playdough recipe: www.foodtv.ca/recipes/recipedetails.aspx?dishid=6799. if you try it let me know how you go?

I think you should get your dd the little chair!!! i want to get one for ds soon. my friend has a little couch thing that folds out like a sofabed which he adores! my ds loves sitting on any chair that isn't a high chair - i think he thinks he's like a big person!

ds loves climbing. whenever the dining chair is pulled out he'll climb on it to the table. i dread when he realises that he can actually pull the table out...!

aquablue · 03/09/2006 14:13

...sorry to make the playdough recipe easier for u to get to...playdough recipe

Maddison · 03/09/2006 14:17

There's a recipe for play doh here DS1 got some for Christmas a couple of years ago and I was quite surprised at how well I can make dinosaurs, I make a wicked brontosaurus If you don't fancy making it yourself ELC sell tubs of 4 for £4, which you can get in different colours ie bright, pastel, glitter...

As for chairs, DS1 has a small wooden table with 2 chairs and a 'comfy' chair, and DS2 loves to climb on and sit on both. He looks so cute too

logic · 03/09/2006 18:10

Dd has got a little wooden chair painted bright pink with a pink check fabric seat and her name painted accross the back. It's really nice. She sits on it to play lego! It cost me £21 from a craft shop on Ebay. They make them to order. I loved dd's so much that I asked them to design one with a red train on for ds and they did a great job. Definately worth it...
