New thread!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
lookout · 30/06/2012 19:33

sassy thanks for the tips, definitely worth trying to hide stuff in a puree I guess. If i didn't put too much in that might work.

emma twas me who asked about the pasta Smile. Will have a squizz for the vermicelli, sounds perfect. What sauces do you put on?

Scheherezade · 30/06/2012 20:54

I just use normal fusilli pasta, just cut it up with a knife to make it bite/finger food sized.

C refused dinner tonight, apparently he doesn't like peas or potatoes. (When I say refused I mean major tantrum). But he loved the sausage he got from MIL! So he had a sausage, a tiny bit of potato & peas, and then strawberries and kiwi & natural yoghurt for pudding. Oh well. He's so bloody fussy.

Feeling awful - thread in AIBU about how people once felt like they didn't like their babies.....I feel like this practically once a day! Usually when he is screaming because he's tired and won't sleep, or just because he's an arse. e.g. he woke up an hour early this morning and was screaming because he was so tired, I was making a bottle, but it is difficult to make a bottle with screaming baby in ear, so I had to put him in the highchair whilst I made it. My skin felt like it was crawling I was so wound up. If only I could just lift top and whack on, like in the old days of bf!
I always love him, and he can't move for cuddles and kisses and playtime. But sometimes I.Just.Don't.Like.Him.

Scheherezade · 30/06/2012 20:55

screaming baby in arms* that should be.

lookout · 30/06/2012 21:47

sche don't feel bad about that. I think we all have different cut-off points for when babies get to us, some have a lower threshold than others. I know I feel like that when I haven't slept for weeks, when E is shouting, ds1 is whining and dh is in front of the bloody PC again Wink. My own weakness is when he doesn't nap properly. For some reason I lose my rag when I think he should sleep more than he does.

I promise it will get easier. Remember, this too shall pass Smile

ClimbingPenguin · 30/06/2012 21:50

Sch I have moments where I have to put him down and have been struggling lately.

Lookout by two to three hours I mean that is how then he wakes not now much sleep I get. Though Have suffering from insomnia lately and my Asthma has been really playing up this past month.

ClimbingPenguin · 30/06/2012 21:51

I will look at my nutrition books when back home for vegan sources of calcium.

ClimbingPenguin · 30/06/2012 21:54

Look up sources of calcium for vegan in google and a vegan society link comes up, also isn't oat milk fortified with calicium? Sorry we are away this weekend and on someone's iPad so can't look at ,y books or do links.

golemmings · 30/06/2012 22:00

Totally dropped off the thread again, but prior to seeing the dietician next week we're keeping a detailed log of what Alex is eating. Re calcium, 1 weetabix, 50ml breast milk and 2 strawberries more than exceeds hid daily calcium needs. Almonds are good for calcium too and I think apricots. Will now go back up thread and see what the question actually was...

golemmings · 30/06/2012 22:19

Aha. Lookout. Yes. Dairy & soy (and sesame) intolerant here too.

We also do risotto with spinach, or chard which has slightly less flavour (and we have chard trees in the garden. They kinda bolted and are taller than me now...). DH did a fab potato and broccoli soup the other day which a loved. He is mercifully unfussy. We also eat fish; fish fingers, salmon risotto, we had smoked white fish with parsley sauce for lunch the other day - our white sauce made with oat milk, a's with ebm.

I thought yesterday I might have to give up bfing. Alex's feeds were getting shorter and shorter and he'd been biting for a couple of days. Todays feeds were beautiful but he was knacketed after swimming. Usually he gets distracted during the day and doesn't usually take much but catches up at night. Arguably if he wasn't feeding at night he'd probably have more in the day but I don't want to risk it... Dd just had morning and evening feeds from about 8mo but was able to eat yoghurt and cheese etc.

Scheherezade · 30/06/2012 22:22

Thanks lo I think I find it harder because all the advice/support/understanding is for newborns, whereas C was an absolute dream 0-5months. Didn't cry, fed on demand, just very easy. Then he developed a will of his own and turned into the boss from hell! According to that thread, things are supposed to be wonderful once they hit 6 months. C is getting a lot, lot better, but 5-7/8 months was the worst. He wanted to be sat up doing stuff and would absolutely kick off if you tried to lie him down. I want to nominate whoever made our door bouncer for a nobel peace prize.

Can't wait to get home, SIL driving me mad. She's 22, but acts like a 2 year old. She's actually jealous of the attention C is getting from MIL (she was the same when he was born) and stropping all over the place. She doesn't work, lives at home. I thought she'd outgrown it as she was a nightmare teen. Think 4 days here is my limit!

Scheherezade · 30/06/2012 23:42

Sorry x posts there go

Risotto and spinach a great idea. Am v jealous of all mums who are still bf, my biggest regret giving it up.

Scheherezade · 30/06/2012 23:48

Stupid phone, meant to add, how do you make risotto? Do you make the stock put of baby stock?

BuffyFairy · 30/06/2012 23:51

Wow this is a busy thread! Have been reading the 1st pn thread and found Edward's recipe for choc fudge. I know what I'll be making tomorrow Grin

I sometimes panic that Lily isn't eating as much as other babies. We've been doing a mix of finger foods and Ella's pouches. She slurps them straight from the pouch. L refuses to be spoon fed except for yoghurt so had to do the finger food route. So for example she'd have

Breakfast - porridge fingers or toast, banana or pear, half a baby brekkie pouch (half fruit purée with natural yoghurt and ground rice, they taste yummy)

Lunch - veggie muffin, rice cakes, strawberries. Some veggie pouch.

Dinner - mini meat loaf and mixed veg like broccoli, carrots and peas. Some veggie pouch. Yoghurt.

At least half the finger food ends up on the floor! Lily hasn't dropped a milk feed yet although a bit hard to tell as bf on demand. She seems to feed a lot still. When are you meant to introduce snacks? I have no idea how to fit those in.

Hope the poorly babies get better soon. Colds suck. It's awful hearing them struggle to feed and sleep. L often seems wheezy. She isn't struggling just seems to have a rattle in her chest that worries me as DH and I are both asthmatic.

sassy I'm very impressed by your triathlon training.

BuffyFairy · 30/06/2012 23:59

scheh sounds like you have the patience of a saint to put up with your SIL for 4 days.

Scheherezade · 01/07/2012 00:10

Ooh I remember that recipe! Was brilliantl Grin

Yes, although I've been here 9 days!

Had 3 glasses wine and looking through old photos, feeling all nostalgic and melancholy. Just want to pick C up out of cot and bring him in with me. But the dog is here instead Hmm

golemmings · 01/07/2012 07:25

Risotto: dead easy, and apart from chopping an onion it can all be made one handed with a baby on your hip!
Chop onion. Fry.
Add rice and splash of white wine/vermouth
Add stock a bit at a time.

Stir
Add spinach and parmesan if you can do cheese.
Serve.
Takes about 40mins

We use chopped frozen spinach and marigold low salt bouillon - which, tbh, we use for everything!

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 01/07/2012 08:18

I'm rubbish at remembering what foods contain what vitamins. I should type out a simple list of them and stick on fridge so I can have a quick look when cooking. Another thing, what is an average baby size portion of fruit and veg? I've been classing '1 of 5 a day' as a big ice cube of fruit purée, or 2 strawberrys, 4 blueberries, 1/2 banana, big spoon of sweetcorn/peas etc. you think that's about right? I always found soup was the best for hiding veg to get into fussy children. I must google a recipe for potato and broc, sounds yummy! I usually make a pot of lentil and we have that for lunch. Freeze into portions and take out in the morning. I also use the yellow marigold stock. It's low salt and organic which is good! I've been meaning to buy frozen spinach to throw into things, will add to shopping list for next week Smile

sch sometimes a lot of times right now S just wants to be stood up and walked around which I can't always do at that moment so I have to sit her on floor and let her cry. Usually by time she has crawled over and found again, something has distracted her but it can be frustrating! She is just into everything right now, feel like I'm constantly taking her away from things or saying no

Engelsmeisje · 01/07/2012 08:27

who ever was asking about "traditional" weaning. We started with only puree and spoon feeding. Like scheh we do a mix. Brekkie is porridge which is spoon fed, fruit is now pieces instead of puree and M feeds himself (unless I'm trying to keep him clean in which case I put it in his mouth instead...cleaner!). Lunch is one slice of bread with butter/peanut butter/cheese spread which I tear up for him and he feeds himself and dinner is meat/veg/carbs. We don't puree dinner anymore, but cut up or mash a little if there are bigger pieces. Pasta wise we give him what we're having so perhaps fusilli or macaroni (which I don't need to cut up for him now). The other day he had some egg noodles and was sucking them up like in The Lady and the Tramp!

Welcome back!

scheh I don't go to any baby groups, don't really think they have them over here. Am heading to the UK at the end of next week for a week in Dorset and then back to Kent for some family time, inc my mum's 60th. Then I will have 3 and a half weeks to relax at home sort out my house, my garden and finish my prepearation for the next school year.

Tee-hee.....a news item on BBC right now about doing housework making men happier. DH is looking rather sheepish right now and we're argugin over who is the tidy one and who is the untidy one! Grin

Engelsmeisje · 01/07/2012 08:30

x-post fuzzzy M is the same right now. If we're not in the room we have to put him in the box (plyapen in Dutch...not some form of child neglect!) because otherwise he is everywhere...falling off step into kitch, eating plant, trying to grab everything from coffee table....did a spot of babyproofing yesterday but still need to have a good clear out. First job next week is sorting out all tiny baby stuff/car seat (bought our new one the other week)/big buggy and putting away in the attic. My house looks like I'm about to have a jumble sale right now!

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 01/07/2012 08:43

engel yeah sounds about right here! She pulled over a big plant the other day and got soil all over cream carpet Angry. Cleaned fine and plant was moved! I like the idea of the box Grin but my livingroom isn't big enough for something like that. I do just put her in her cot If I need her 'restrained' for 10 mins while I do something. The fun really is starting Grin.

We went to a baby boot sale yesterday for a look around. Had thought about it for getting rid of some stuff. Right now im just drowning in her old clothes but doubt it would be worth the £22 entrance fee just to sell them. I'll need to start boxing and putting into attic and maybe have a mass clear out after Xmas when there may be more to get rid of. What car seat did you go for? I've been looking although want to keep her in her baby one for as long as possible. Really would like the get the next stage rear facing but I just can't afford the £300 price tag!

sassy34264 · 01/07/2012 09:36

£300!!!!!!

are they gold plated????

we paid £26 for the twins rear facing seats. they are from 9months to 12 years old, so no need to buy every stage. i think the equivalent one in argos only went up to 4 years.

they're from kiddicare.

i think our plastic booster seats were too. £9.99. they are not brill to look at but they are secure to the wooden chairs, and they wipe clean easy as anything.

emmazed · 01/07/2012 09:38

Joseph seems to be everywhere as well. Know what you mean, I keep saying no to him as he needs to learn what he can, and can't play with. But it seems like I spend all day saying no, which I hate.

I give Joseph an annabel karmel pasta recipe, which is with butternut squash & tomato. Do you have that book? And the minestrone has pasta in. I guess you could do anything: a tomato sauce with loads of veggies mashed in with it, a white sauce with veggies/fish. Even spag bol if you are serving meat (or are you veggie?)

sassy34264 · 01/07/2012 09:43

sassy34264 · 01/07/2012 09:48

i think i want a built in dvd player for £300! Grin
