I believe the way they work it at Jacks school is that they read the books at home and then have to read them with their teaching assistant to "prove" that they've read them so I'm not sure writing it in his school reading book would work. I figure that if he has a separate book, he can still take that with his official book and they can still see what he's doing with us iyswim? I'm sure they will let us know if they don't want it done that way Grin

MissRee · 19/05/2012 18:19

Ill look them up thanks Aethel Grin has anyone got the Horrid Henry books at all?

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 19/05/2012 19:05

PMSL - Darcie just came out with a cracking one liner to DP....She has been argumentative this afternoon and unfortunately lost her star. However, she has just gone upto bed and asked DP for a small bottle of lemonade to take with her, he didn't respond straight away (working) she then got a little stroppy and when he said yes but no need to shout, she looked up and said 'well if you listened straight away we wouldn't have this problem - pmsl Grin had to really contain my laughter!

MissRee · 19/05/2012 19:09

Grin @ Darcie

So, having lost 12lb since March, I will be starting Jillian Michaels 30 day shred tomorrow now that it has arrived in the post I will be a size ten by the end of the year

LittleMissFlustered · 19/05/2012 19:16

If you've lost that much you need to invest in a better purse:o

LittleMissFlustered · 19/05/2012 19:17

Oh, and throwing the Mr Majieka books into the mix:)

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 19/05/2012 19:23

LMF Grin at a better purse...

Mr Majieka. I love those books too, along with Dr Seuss.

MissRee · 19/05/2012 19:23

Freya looks like Mr Majieka, LMF Grin

I can only apologise for my verbal diarrhoea today... I did warn you that DP was working all weekend Grin

NorthernChinchilla · 19/05/2012 19:55

It's wonderful when they come out with stuff like that DSM, and you do have to work so hard to keep a straight face! Well done if you managed it Grin.

Well, the cake is made- would you believe that DP talked me into buying a posh cake tin to put it in? All I have to do tomorrow is make the filling and then assemble. Actually really looking forward to doing the candles and making DP blow them out!

DP coming downstairs now, so it's footie for us too. Oh, and laugh of the day- the geraniums I bought today are of a type called 'Randy'.
Snurk Grin

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 19/05/2012 19:59

Northern I had my back to her ad had to hide my laughter behind my dressing gown - twas very hard trying to keep the laughter inside Grin

I think you'll have to upload a pic of your posh cake so we can really get a feel for its poshness!

Hello!

Oooo...children's books, a favourite topic. We have all of Roald Dahl's books too, I hope the DDs absorb his lack of respect for authority Grin His books for adults and short stories are wonderful too.

I love everything Cressida Crowell writes, the 'hiccup' books are wonderful and she writes great female characters.

Barefoot Books do fabulous themed short story collections, we have their Wise Women, Horse and Winter collections.

Original Thomas books also really popular here, as is everything by Dick King Smith.

DD1 can't read much yet (tis not a worry though), we do spend several hours a day reading to the children, I am permanently glued to a book the rest of the time!

dsm I like Dr Seuss too! I have an ongoing challenge with people who come round...no one has beaten me at reading the Fox in Socks without tripping up yet though! I love 'oh, the places you'll go' particularly, such an inspiring book for small people!

While we are on books, what are the grown ups reading? I am reading 'The Red Tent', the first of the 'Game of Thrones' books and re-reading some feminist theory.

msbuggywinkle · 19/05/2012 20:11

Oh, just realised how long that post is. You may have gathered that I like books a bit Grin

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 19/05/2012 20:13

I love Green Eggs & Ham Grin

I'm currently about to start the autobiography of Jaycee dugard the girl who was kidnapped in the states. Not long finished the lost symbol by Dan Brown. Love his books.

Figgygal · 19/05/2012 20:35

LittleMissFlustered · 19/05/2012 20:37

I haven't picked up a book since before Freya was born! I think my last book was the trilogy of books by the author of Call the Midwife. I love post war tales and would have loved living in the 50s Grin

I could read Memoirs of a Geisha over and over!

Otherwise I'm also a fan of trashy Girly novels (Shopaholic etc). Easy reads are always a favourite for the commute to/from work.

MissRee · 19/05/2012 20:41

Ahhhh awesome - I can get him the Harry Potter boxset if it's not extortionately expensive

I love it when The Book People visit at work Grin

Figgygal · 19/05/2012 20:42

Oh and how much does the cinema cost now? £23.50 for the 2 of us as was a 3d movie then £26.00 for lunch with drinks before drinks at the cinema Confused

1 woman came into the screening with her 2 kids and bags from mcdonalds Hmm i am terrified smuggling a bottle of water in my handbag honestly when did they stop checking?? A mcdonalds.......honestly!!!!

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 19/05/2012 20:46

MissRee If you like War & Post war books I highly recommend Lilian Harry Books. She is by far my favourite author (she was born & raised in Portsmouth too Smile)

Figgy That is the reason the movies are a rare treat for us, as it's bloody expensive!

Harry Potter books are a must. I could read them over & over again.

msbuggywinkle · 19/05/2012 20:47

lmf jealous, DD1 will not allow me to read Harry Potter to her. I re-read them fairly often. DP and I may have queued in costume for the last three book releases as students

missree I loved the Call the Midwife books too, made me cry though. Memoirs of a Geisha is so well written, I really enjoyed it. I mainly read Terry Pratchett for light reading.

dsm I can't get into Dan Brown, FIL keeps loaning me his books after he has read them as on paper I should enjoy them. I really don't know why I don't!

LittleMissFlustered · 19/05/2012 20:48

MissRee I wouldn't read the last three Potter books to a seven year old, they're a tad dark for smaller kids I cry like a baby reading Deathly Hallows and I'm 31 :(

OP posts:
MissRee · 19/05/2012 20:49

I've never read them! I feel I must now join the HP bandwagon Grin

We used to sneak a dirty maccy's into our local cinema as "yoofs". The fashionable (at the time) puffer jackets made concealing a wealth of treats into the cinema easy peasy Grin

LittleMissFlustered · 19/05/2012 20:50

PTerry books =

OP posts:
DeterminedandSpecialMum · 19/05/2012 20:50

I also love Philippa Gregory books - the author of The other Boleyn Girl, The Virgin Queen etc.

MissRee · 19/05/2012 20:52

Surprisingly, he likes gripping (and sometimes scary) things! He watched The Vampires Assistant last night and loved it whilst I found it quite creepy
