This time last year, we were all enormous, waiting for them to arrive - now they're almost 1

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
ukrainianmum · 29/03/2006 19:20

bustwizzy did you have your baby at 19th of march?if yes me too.

do you introduce your babies to potty?we have been trying since ksenia was 7 months old. and now sometimes she actually asks to do her things in the potty.she takes it into the hands and shows with her finger.but not all the times.

Cristina7 · 29/03/2006 19:20

Well done for walking, Ksenia! My son (now 6) had a bottle at night till he was 4. I didn't really see any problem with it. He was hungry. He needed a bottle. His teeth are OK, no ill-effect. It was tiring, but it would have been tiring trying to get him to sleep without a bottle, then he might have woken up earlier and brought on other problems. It worked for us. DD is still sleeping in our bed and breastfeeding and she does so in the night if she needs it too. In fact, she's been sleeping in her bed more and more these past 2-3 weeks, so it will all happen in time. Anyway, that's my approach. BTW - we have a Ukrainian friend. He lives in Manchester, married an Irish girl and have just had a baby girl called Anna Mary.

Pidge · 30/03/2006 20:32

Cristina7 - your work sounds fascinating. What will you do when you're done? I guess you don't really know until you've settled on a job. But will it be in that area? Hopefully in the viva you'll find you know far more about your subject area than they ever could, and remember it's fine to say "I don't know" or "Hmmm, I never thought of that" (I got away with both those!).

Iris apparently has a new word "banana". But she refused to perform it for mummy when I came home, despite dp brandishing a bunch of fine specimens in her face several times Grin. And she still calls me "dadden" .. no sign of a "m" sound.

I was still feeding Iris and then putting her straight to bed until a few nights ago. But I've just started to change the routine, so I breastfeed her, then brush her teeth, then read a few stories and then put her down. So far she seems to be doing ok and settling after just a little grumbling.

We're off to Wales in a couple of days to spend a week in my parents house whilst they're in Japan. And we're taking with us some friends whose dd is the same age as dd1. Hopefully they will entertain themselves, playing and stuff whilst we live a life of leisure.

jambot · 30/03/2006 21:44

Well done Christina. What a clever thing you are!
Ksenia - clever girl! Ukranianmum - I must say I haven't given any thought to potty training Lauren. Thought it was nearer to 2yrs that that happens. Maybe the second time mums will have more to say in that regard.
Lauren has now taken to mama, mamaing all day! Hah, finally the dada, dada days are over :) So sweet. Finding it amazing how much she understands of what you say to her. Having fun asking her to fetch things and seeing what she does. She normally sits there for about 5 seconds, as if she's having to churn the info around in her brain, and then she's off. Doesn't always bring me the thing I ask for but so sweet. She has started offering things to me now, and is presently fascinated with looking underneath everything. Find she's initiating little games now, which is new. She is so adorable right now that I could just eat her up!!

jambot · 30/03/2006 21:47

Oh yes, well done on the weight loss, Busy. Can't you send some of that will-power my way? Have this wedding to go to in August, and can't go looking like a fat blob! It's really getting me down at the moment, but still can't seem to stop food going in my mouth. Quite pathetic really - must just get a grip. Can't use giving birth to Lauren as an excuse anymore!
Posted one or two new piccies on the photobucket of Lauren's birthday party.

JoPG · 30/03/2006 22:16

Cristina - Well Done. Your work sounds very interesting, and it must have been very difficult to fit everything in around 2 children. I have trouble just getting through the day sometimes!

Freya has a new trick. If yousay to her 'Can you wash your hair?' she puts her hands up to her head and rubs her hair. She smiles loads and then claps her hands (a complete show off). It's quite ironic really since she has still hardly got any hair!

We are not even going near potty training for a good while yet. I started Ethan at 2 and 4 months and in retrospect that was too early for him. Loads of accidents and frustration later he made it, but I'm going for the chilled out approach this time. I don't think it helped that we have now found out that he has got a bit of a sluggish bowel and so can get constipated very easily. He is on medicine for this, and apparently he will grow out of it, but in the meantime it is still a mad dash to the loo every time! Needless to say I am not too anxious to repeat the whole experience again.
Cristina - I remember that you have had some success with Sylvia. How's it going now?

Running going ok. 20 miles weekend before last, 15 miles last weekend and we're going for the big 22 miles this weekend. Am getting quite nervous, so will have to see how it goes.

Leo - How are you feeling now? I hope you have got over you sickness and that you get to spend a nice weekend with Niklas. Take it easy!

Pidge · 31/03/2006 09:44

No potty training here either. With dd1 we waited till she showed an interest, at 2 yrs 2 months, and then it happened pretty much with little intervention on our part. Very easy. No plans to do any different with Iris. Though I have heard that 'early' potty training is 'back in fashion' - whatever that means! Whatever works for you I say.

I've got Iris's stinking cold so am dosed up on paracetamol, trying to entertain the two kids, do the laundry, pack for our holiday, oh and clear out two rooms of their contents because they're being decorated whilst we are away! Suffice to say I'm not doing any of these things particularly well. Ho hum.

jambot · 01/04/2006 10:47

Hey Guys! Do you think I won a prize? On the home page it says congrats to Jambot who has won a chest of drawers. How do I know if it's really me? Surely there's only one person with that name on Mumsnet? Bit of a problem if it is me, what with delivery not being that easy. Wonder if they will let me give it to a friend of mine. Or maybe I should sell it. 395 pounds is quite a bit of money in rand terms.

JoPG · 01/04/2006 16:25

It must be you. You can't choose a nickname that somebody else has got.
Congratulations - the drawers look lovely. Would love them myself, but freya's room is already full to bursting!
I'm sure you would be able to sell them, cos you are right - delivery could be a problem!
Wonder if mumsnet sends you an email to confirm?

busywizzy · 01/04/2006 19:07

Jambot, well done and lucky you - they look great. Loved Lauren's birthday pictures, she's growing up into such a beautiful little girl and what big brown eyes. And you didn't look like a fat blob to me Smile

Harrison has been a bit poorly the past few days, not sure if he's teething or has the virus Hannah had a few weeks back. One night I got up to him every 30-45 minutes between 11pm and 5 am. He kept waking and crying out and was very, very hot. Seems better today but still not his usual cheery self.

We've had the details through of our weekend to London - we're staying in the Four Seasons Hotel on Park Lane Shock Shock Definately haven't got anything remotely glamorous enough to wear so a shopping trip is in order me thinks Smile

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend. Good luck Jo with your 22 miles.

busywizzy · 01/04/2006 19:14

Oh forgot to say well done to Cristina - I'm embarrassed to ask what is a 'viva' Blush

No potty training here for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages. The idea's almost laughable if his efforts on everything else are a benchmark. Hannah came out of nappies at 2yrs 3 months having spent a lovely hot Easter weekend running around the garden with no nappy and using the potty when she wanted. Plan on leaving Harrison too until he shows signs himself of understanding what he's doing. I won't be holding my breath Grin

OP posts:
jambot · 01/04/2006 21:22

Do you know that this is the first thing I've ever won? And I didn't even enter, although I did send in a review of Lauren's high chair. Maybe that did it. Haven't heard from them yet and am hoping that they don't say that because I don't live in the UK I can't get the prize!
Thanks Busy for saying I don't look like a fat blob! You do notice that I'm hidden behind the chair!! But am now on diet with a vengeance. Have worked out that I've got 20 weeks until this family wedding in Hamburg in August. I've psyched myself into believing that I've got the willpower to stick to a diet. It's not that I don't know what the right things are to eat - I just like all the stuff you're not supposed to have! DH has promised to keep his junk food stash out of the house and in his office. I'm so good at making sure Lauren only has the healthiest stuff but then there's her Mum polishing off a packet of crisps! Have to make an effort - my sister in laws' are reed thin and even my MIL looks like one of those glam 'mature' models.
Hope Harrison is back to his usual self soon Busy. Waiting for the other shoe to drop with Lauren. She has been such a healthy baby so far, but can't believe it's going to last much longer. Should be more positive and be thankful that she is so healthy. Been spoilt I suppose.

jambot · 01/04/2006 21:25

Busy. What did a average day's meal plan look like on your diet? Whatever you did seems to have worked. Maybe I need a few pointers.

Cristina7 · 01/04/2006 21:34

Thanks - the viva is the orqal part when you have to "defend" your thesis in front of the panel. This intermediate stage also had an oral part but it wasn't as tough.

Congrats jambot for winning the chest of drawers. Quite a substantial prize. It made me look on the front page, I never do, and I even entered a competition too for some holiday in Austria!

My dad arrived this morning, he's staying one month. While we were waiting at the airport Dominic played on a bar and landed on his arm. I took him to A&E this afternoon but he's fine, they didn't even do an X-ray as there was no swelling or anything else, just pain.

Jambot - i hope you find the secret to willpower. I don't understand why i don't have any anymore. I think it's because i'm staying at home and i've started cooking a lot. I found a good easy book and they all come out nice, which encourages me to do even more cooking. We don't keep crisps or sweets in the house but we have biscuits and bread. (A colleague even asked me if I was pregnant, i've put on so much weight.)

Busy - have fun shopping for your new, slim figure. I've postponed buying nice new clothes in the hope that I can get back to size 12, maybe even 10.

Sylvia has been quite unsettled lately, she keeps grabbing at her nappy or taking it off when she can and taking off her covers in the night etc. She's still eating little but pooing respectably.

Cristina7 · 01/04/2006 21:45

I meant to ask - I never see you on other threads, do you go elsewhere? I usually have a look on the Active conversations list and contribute here and there if the title takes my fancy. I used to go through the Breastfeeding threads too but haven't done this in months now.

Cristina7 · 02/04/2006 13:22

Sylvia has just fallen out of her cot. I'd put her there to get some clothes from the wardrobe for her. I don't know how, she fell out, with a teddy bear in her hands. She was flat on her back. All fine, just both very shaken. I think we'll take the toddler bed out. This cot hasn't had much use so far...

calebsmum · 02/04/2006 13:48

urgh had a horrid weekend! My mum was tiling the bathroom and fell off the stool she was standing on, she impaled her arm on the radiator and has made a right mess of it! She's been stitched up and will need physio as she might have damaged nerves in her arm/hand. Caleb up screaming for most of the night so i've only had 4 hrs sleep. Also feeling fat and blobby, hate to admit this but I pigged out on a chinese and then made myself sick afterwards Blush. Have decided to cut right down on carbs and see if I can shift some lard that way.

Caleb can now walk about 10ft before falling on his bum, he can also say light and ta. God our babies are growing up so fast, all on the brink of toddlerdom!

Congrats on the prize Jambot and well done for the weight loss busy!

Cristina7 · 02/04/2006 16:04

That sounds quite nasty, Calebsmum. I hope your mum's arm recovers fully and quickly.

busywizzy · 02/04/2006 21:26

Cristina, hope Sylvia is OK. I remember Hannah doing that once and it scared the life out of me.

Calebsmum, hope your mum is OK - what a horrible thing to happen.

Jo, how did the running go today?

OK so my food plan for the past few months has been something like this. I had three 'rules' 1) eat regularly and sensibly 2) drink 1.5 litres of water a day 3) try and exercise twice a week

So a typical day for me is a cup of tea when I wake up, cereal for breakfast, a piece of fruit mid morning, soup or salad for lunch, a small snack mid afternoon (ryvita crackers, yogurt, piece of fruit) and then a medium sized tea but not too late (I try to make sure I've eaten before putting Harrison to bed) Whilst I haven't given up bread, I'm not really eating much anymore and I haven't eaten specific low-fat meals for my dinner, just sensible portions.

I think the water definately helps and although I'm not actually exercising so much now I'm back at work, I try and get out for a walk with Harrison or run at the weekends with Hannah. It all helps is my motto and it's definately worked for me.

Good luck - if I can do it, anyone can Smile Oh yes, almost forgot. I always treat myself twice a week. I have something nice on Tuesdays after I've weighed in and I have a glass of wine and a bit of chocolate at the weekend. Just that little bit of naughtiness seems to get me through the week and now I find I don't really miss anything as if I want it, I have it on a Tuesday or at the weekend.

OP posts:
busywizzy · 02/04/2006 21:29

Harrison's got his first word - it's 'NO' said very loudly and is usually accompanied by something getting thrown across the floor Shock OMG my gorgoeus boy has turned into a monster!!!!

OP posts:
JoPG · 02/04/2006 21:51

Ouch - Hope that Sylvia is ok. Do you mean that you are now thinking of putting her in a toddler bed? That would be very grown up!

BW - Congrats on Harrison's first word. I'm guessing you might get a bit fed up of 'no' though! Freya still isn't really saying anything very recognisable, just mama and dada really.

Managed a 22 mile run yesterday. Would never have thought that I could do it. Very tired at the end and a bit worried that I have got to do an extra 4 miles on the day! There is now a taper period, so that means 11 miles next weekend and just 5 miles the weekend after. There are also a couple of shorter runs during the week. It kinda seems very close now.

Freya has been quite poorly this weekend. Sickness started on Friday, and tho she is a bit better today she is def not 100%. Hoping she recovers pretty soon for both her sake and my sanity - it is Easter Hols for the next couple of weeks and the thought of being stuck in the house with a poorly Freya and my 'ants in his pants' son just does not bear thinking about!
Grin.

Calebsmum - hope you mum is better soon. Sounds pretty nasty. i'm guessing she will be making a few trips to the hospital in the coming weeks.

Cristina7 · 02/04/2006 22:43

We were thinking about the toddler bed - or rather I was, but DH put the cot down another notch and that gave it another inch or two depth. Dominic used to climb out of it and we moved him to a toddler bed at 1.5, but I wouldn't have imagined it would be Sylvia to fall out of it. Today she ate well - i can't believe how much my mood is affected by whether she eats well or not.

JoPG - well done on your run. Can you post that link again please so I can contribute to your fundraising? I have a friend who's doing it for the second time now, he's running for Amnesty (same as last year). He's the guy through whom I met my DH. I'm also helping someone doing a run for a deafness charity. I love the Marathon. I'll never, ever, ever do one myself, but I think the whole idea behind it and the effort and everything involved is v special. I wouldn't mind contemplating a bike ride but never a run.

Things are fine here. DH, Ds and my Dad went to the stock car racing today. They said it was good fun. DS had fallen on his arm yesterday (we went to A&E, all fine).

Busy - your eating plan sounds v sensible, I like the idea of having a treat twice a week. (I like the idea of twice a day but YKWIM.)

leogaela · 03/04/2006 08:59

wow, there is a lot to catch up on here! I've been reading in bits over the weekned but never got to the end so didn't post.
Sorry to hear lots of the babies are ill again and good to hear that Dominic's arm is OK after his fall. Calebsmum - your mum's accident sounds really nasty.

I am feeling much better today, its the first day I really have some energy back. Its a bit pathetic that a cold has got me so down but i think its a build up of several late nights and bad nights with Niklas.

Niklas fell down the steps (about 6) Shock Blush in our garden yesterday. He has grazed and bruised the whole side of his face :(. He knows how to go down stairs backwards but somehow forgot and tried to walk down forwards. It took ages to calm him (and me) down. No i am making him go down the stairs himself all the time so he doesn't make the mistake again.

Right, he is completely destroying the place at the moment :o so I'm going to have to try to come back later.

Georgiesmum · 03/04/2006 09:44

Hi, Can i join your thread please my DD was born March 05 and turned One last Sunday!

Leo my dd fell down the stairs on Friday too, only 6 but god id it scare me!

I live in Herts/cambs and Dd is my only child. Nice to meet you all

jambot · 03/04/2006 10:03

Gosh, lots of tumbles taking place here. Hope all are ok.
Well done Jo on your running. Sure you'll make it easily on the day. The crowds will give you that extra push.
Well, into day 3 of my diet and so far so good. Didn't cheat once over the weekend, which is a miracle. Made sure there wasn't any 'illegal' stuff in the house, which makes it so much easier. I will never go out and buy the stuff when I'm feeling peckish, but if it's there it HAS to be eaten!
Thanks for the eating plan Busy. Pretty much along the lines of what I'm doing.
Welcome Georgiesmum. Of course we'd love to have you. Presuming DD is called Georgie. Lauren (March 9th) is also my first. Why don't you fill us in a little on what she's like and how she sleeps, eats etc.
