This time last year, we were all enormous, waiting for them to arrive - now they're almost 1

BW - Not sure how wide your stairs are, but ours are pretty wide and we managed to get a Lindam stairgate from Argos to fit - it fits up to 106cm I think.

Had a lovely Mother's Day, both sets of parents and our siblings (and their families) came round, but it was great to see everyone and catering was courtesy of M&S so not too much work for me. DH is just tidying away the last of the mess.

Pidge - Great idea about weighing the pram down with water bottles. Freya loves the toy pushchair that we have, but since she is not walking well it is too light for her and it tips over. Must try the water bottles.

jambot · 27/03/2006 08:28

Hi All. Happy Mother's Day to all the UK Mums. Our M.D is later in the year for some reason.
Lauren has a brick in her trolley to weigh it down! Bottles are probably better.
All went well at the doctor for Lauren's one year check-up. All as she should be. Says she is nearly ready to walk. Don't think it will be for a month at least. Gets around very well with her cruising and crawling, but she won't stand on her own yet.
If I hear Lauren up early I just leave her. She nearly always goes back to sleep until about 7am.

BonyM · 27/03/2006 09:39

Busy, we've got the stairgates that are like roller blinds - by Kiddiguard. They're quite expensive but are pretty good.

Not sure if I can face cc with Grace at the moment - thing is, she actually seems genuinely hungry at that time as she won't settle again unless she has both breasts. Tried just giving her one this morning, but she just started crying again until I gave the other one, then fell quickly back to sleep and didn't wake until 7.45am.

Jambot - glad Lauren's check-up went well. Grace has her MMR jab on Wednesday - any of the other babies had it yet? Is anyone not going to give it?

We had my parents over for lunch yesterday. Dh was a hero all day - I had a nice lie-in, breakfast in bed with the papers, and he cooked a lovely roast lunch. He also did all the tidying up afterwards - I was banned from the kitchen!

Am off to a friend's 40th birthday lunch today. Must go and wrap her present...Have a nice day everyone.

busywizzy · 27/03/2006 19:52

BonyM, if you don't mind feeding her at that time and she goes back to sleep, then I'd stick with that. The reason I decided to do something was because Harrison started mucking about with his milk and then wouldn't go back to sleep, so I knew he wasn't really hungry. She'll eventually grow out of it - probably when she starts walking.

I'm going to look up the stairgates you've told me about so thanks to BonyM and Jo for the tips.

We're going to have the MMR but I haven't heard anything about it yet. Hannah had it and got a mild dose of measles about 10 days later so I never gave her the booster as I was confident she'd got enough first time round. Such a worry isn't it Sad

OP posts:
popsycalindisguise · 27/03/2006 19:56

we will delay MMR til harry is 2 as we did with ds1. we intended to get him singles at that point but didnt - he is still unvaccinated...but we are considering givng ds1 the pre school booster MMR

leogaela · 27/03/2006 20:59

Wow, lots to catch up on!

Welcome Alexadra and Ksenia (how do you pronounce that?). Niklas took his first steps alone at 10 months, but took about 2 months before he was really stable and controlled wiht his walking. I also think he progressed slowly because he had been ill so much. Some babies just decide to walk one day and do it!

As for the next one to get pregnant again - I wonder how Norash is doing, I remember she said thta they were already trying a long time ago.

No mother's day here either, I'm not sure whenit is.

Bonym - Niklas also wakes up around 5 and is definitely hungry. He has a bottle and goes back to sleep (usually) in bed with us. I haven't noticed any improvement since he has been walking however.

We have had 2 really bad nights with him waking up and not going back to sleep again. It has taken 3 hours the last 2 nights to get him back to sleep. Wehave been really busy the last week and dh is in bed with man-flu, me and Niklas are also not 100% so his bad sleeping is really taking its tole.

In fact, that's me off to bed now to try to cathc up a bit!

leogaela · 27/03/2006 21:01

Oh - I don't feel very comfortable with the MMR, but still prefer to do what is recommended. Niklas missed his appointment and won't have it until he has had a long period (can't remember what the doctor recommended) of no illnesses (LOL, we could be waiting for a while!)

JoPG · 27/03/2006 21:13

Freya will be having her MMR pretty soon - whenever I remember to arrange the appointment in fact! Ethan had his MMR jabs at 15 months and 4 years old, and didn't have any ill effects apart from being a teeny bit feverish abuot 10 days after the jab he had a 15 months. Only lasted a day or so though.

Pidge · 27/03/2006 21:41

I must remember to book MMR for Iris too. Plus dd1's got to have a 'pre-school booster'. Must book that before Iris's jab, as I don't want dd1 to get hysterical seeing baby sister getting jabbed before she has her own injection.

We don't really 'do' mothers day, but dd1 had made me a nice card and got me a daffodil courtesy of her childminder which was very sweet. We actually had my mum over too, and my dad and brother, so we had a Sunday Roast with all the family. Then ferried my parents to the station to send them off on a trip to Japan.

We've never bothered with stairgates. And now Iris is so competent going up I can't really be bothered to put them up. Might have to rethink if she starts making any attempt to come down!

She is now standing independently for up to a minute. But if you ask her to walk, she looks sceptically at her feet, then finally moves on and fall on her bottom!

Busywizzy - it's interesting to hear you were successful with cc in the morning. We tried this with Iris before Christmas, but she always reverts to waking around 5.30am and she never goes back to sleep once she's awake. Very painful. At the moment we're in a blissful, but temporary state where her body clock is confused with the clocks change, so yesterday she slept through till 6.30am. Her longest ever! It can only last a matter of days though ....

busywizzy · 28/03/2006 14:06

Well ladies, had my Tuesday morning weigh-in today and I've done it - I'VE LOST A STONE Grin Grin Grin Now instead of being a 5'10" super lardy, I'm medium sized and best of all, I fit into my pre-baby jeans and into my bikini (not that that's critical at the moment with the UK weather Grin )

I'm sooooooo chuffed with myself. Obviously not as chuffed as I would be if I could run 19 miles but in my little world, I'm proud of myself.

Now just need to inspire DH to loose a bit of weight. Struggle and uphill are two words that spring to mind Grin

leogaela · 28/03/2006 14:44

Hoooray!!! Well done Busy!!!!

Still not feeling 100%, but at work so that's not helping either. Going to scoot off home early today though Wink!

BonyM · 28/03/2006 17:01

Busy - well done! That's fantastic. Can I be really nosy and ask how much you weigh now? Just interested, because I'm also 5'10". Don't have to tell if you don't want to Smile.

Hope everyone is feeling better in your house Leo. Looks as though we are all finally free of the numerous colds and coughs we seem to have been suffering from recently.

DD1 has been off school today as the teachers are on strike over their pension, so we've had a lovely girly shopping day in town, plus lunch out. Bought loads of stuff Blush but I don't take her into town too often as I can't face all the crowds at weekends.

Must go and wake Grace up - she's gone down late for her sleep this afternoon, and I'm worried she won't want to go to bed later if I don't wake her soon.

JoPG · 28/03/2006 17:36

BW - Well Done!
What a tall lot we are, cos I am 5'11'
Lol about the bikini. The sun was out today, but def not bikini weather!

Took Freya to Toddler Group today. They had a Easter Egg hunt. I didn't let Freya have any chocolate, not sure why really cos I am sure she will have it one day, but there just doesn't seem any need at this age. However there was a lady there who was feedng her 3 month old white choc buttons Shock. Is it just me that just thinks that is totally silly? Too early for weaning anyway, and what is the point of giving a treat to someone who doesn't even know what proper food is? Start with carrots and broccoli and leave chocolate as long as possible is my idea!

BonyM - Glad you had a nice day. I know what you mean about avoiding shops. I need to get Ethan some new shoes, but really can't face Clarks at the weekend, or during the school hols. Am gonna have to face it at some point though.

JoPG · 28/03/2006 17:38

BonyM - Have just seen the time of your post! Wake Grace up immediately! Have to make sure she charges round loads and has a bath to wear her out again before bedtime. Hope she goes down ok later, we can often get away with a late nap for Freya as long as it is not a regular thing.

busywizzy · 28/03/2006 18:50

Why would you want to give a baby chocolate buttons, when you could eat them yourself, especially white chocolate Grin Can't you tell that I've been dieting - I'm food obsessed.

I now weigh 10st, down from the 12.5 that I was when I was pregnant with Harrison. I dropped down to 10.5st within a couple of months but then over the next six months or so, I slowly put half a stone back on until I was 11st and my trousers were way too tight. Now they're loose again Smile

Please don't either of you (BonyM and Jo) tell me you weigh loads less - let me wallow in my moment of glory for a day or two Grin

OP posts:
BonyM · 28/03/2006 20:10

Busy - am Envy. I'm 10st 5lbs which I thought was really good...you have inspired me to lose a little more.

I do tend to eat a fair bit though and am a real "picker'. Can't resist chocolate either...

BonyM · 28/03/2006 20:12

Oh, Jo, my MIL gave Grace a huge tube of white chocolate buttons for Xmas. I was a bit horrified, and needless to say they are still in the cupboard (I don't really like white chocolate).

Cristina7 · 28/03/2006 20:45

Busy - 10 st and so tall too!! Well done you (at least on the weight side :) ) I'm shorter (5' 7") and weigh about 75 kg which is about 12-13 st, I think. I was lighter but put it back on these past few months.

I had my PhD upgrading today. I passed! Hurray. Lots of sleepless nights, going to bed at 5 am and waking up at 6.30-7 with the children, so due for a very long and restfull sleep tonight.

I'll catch up with everyone during the next few days.

Pidge · 29/03/2006 09:54

No way would I sacrifice chocolate buttons to Iris! Let alone a tiny baby. Mind you I read recently that 1 in 10 babies is given some form of food before they are 8 weeks old ...

BW - well done on the weight.

I'm obviously the midget round here with all you tall ladies ... I'm 5'4". In fact dd1 said to me the other day "Mummy I'm nearly as tall as you, and soon I'll be bigger than you". Which is not so far from the truth. Dp is 6', and dd1 has definitely got his height gene. She is like a string bean (around the 80th centile, I think). Soon she will be towering over me bossing me about.

leogaela · 29/03/2006 12:48

Pidge - I am shorter - 1.63 (5'3 and something) and 57Kg (8st 9 adn something).

Cristina - that is fantastic. i'm not sure how you have managed it. i find it hard even to get time to read a book these days! I am totally impressed! Well done :):):)! Lets hope the fantastic job comes your way to pay off for all the hard work!

Jo - how is the training going? when is the marathon?

Bonym - its the days like yesterday that feel really special isn't it! I am sure your dd deserved lots of new things (and you too I hope).

Niklas has eaten chocolate Blush, but he definitely didn't have anything except milk until he was almost 6 months and chocolate the first time around his birthday. I'm not too worried, he eats everything we give him. The only thing that does bother me is that he goes crazy when he sees yoghurt and I'm not talking about the plain stuff, its the 'fruit' yogurts full of sugar so they have been banned from our house and I have gone back to making the fruit purees again (taste much, much better anyway :)

I am off work sick today. I felt so bad when i got home last night, went straight to bed and decided to stay there until about 12 today :). me & dh are both at home which is nice :), he is looking after me:)! Niklas is fine, he had his best night EVER last night :):):):) he slept from 8pm to 7am!!!! If he did wake up crying though I think me & dh were both so out of it that we wouldn't have heard him!

Cristina7 · 29/03/2006 13:36

Thanks, Leo. I now need to finish the study and sit the viva etc but should be done by september. Then I won't touch a book again EVER.

DS had a few more assessments done by the teacher fo the deaf (she goes in to the school every couple of weeks to see how he gets on and to give any advice to the other teachers as they may not have had experience with a deaf child). He scored age 8;03 and 8;06 at some tests (BPVT and edinburgh - if that means anything to anyone). he's 6;05, so very good news. His next appointment on the road to a cochlear implant is May 18th, so fingers crossed they take him on for an op before the end of the year.

Leo - i hope you're feeling better. I thought you'd had a night on the booze, but then i scrolled down and saw you are feeling poorly...

Envy at you slim lot. I'll get there again sometime. I seem to have no motivation lately.

BonyM · 29/03/2006 15:26

Congrats on the upgrading Christina - hope viva etc. goes well. What is it in? Have you told us already? I've got such a terrible memory these days, that you may well have done and I've just forgotten.

Sorry you're still feeling rough Leo - nice that you have dh at home to look after you though. Have a really good rest.

Well, Grace had her MMR earlier - a little cry but quickly got over it. The nurse did say that if there is going to be any reaction then it will be in about a week's time. Don't remember dd1 having any problems so hopefully Grace will be the same.

Grace is now asleep and dd1 has gone to a friend's for tea, so I should really crack on and catch up on some chores...

Cristina7 · 29/03/2006 16:26

Thanks, BonyM, it's about polyunsaturated fatty acids (e.g. omega-3) and age related macular degeneration. I started it about 3 years ago but had to interrupt a couple of times.

Sylvia will be having her MMR jabs too, I just need to get round to organising it.

ukrainianmum · 29/03/2006 19:10
