Happy 6 month birthday to Penguin's DS!

The bumbo thing is scary. I had a blow up with DH about putting it up on a table. He also thinks its ok to leave L on the bed when he's not right there. As if you can stop a baby rolling off with the power of your eyes! You only find out your child can do these things when they do them for the first time. Our oldest was 14 months when I discovered he could run an proceeded to run towards a flight of stairs and then somosault down them :(. He was fine but I was a mess!

Jnice · 12/04/2012 02:47

cheshire yes - sleep got good for us, then terrible for at least a month, but now it feels like we're coming out the other side. Last couple of nights he's slept 3 & 4 hour chunks but unfortunately wants to be up for the day at 5 or 6am. I suppose you can't have everything but I'm exhausted.

Hang on in there!

Penelope1980 · 12/04/2012 03:47

cheshire we have the same here re sleep - was back to one wake a night, but think that last night was one of our worst ones yet. Am shattered today!

Jnice I like your 'power of your eyes' comment! A grabbed a cup of coffee last week - it wasn't something I thought he could even do until he did it, and it was so fast I didn't react until the coffee was all over him. Lucky it was cold!

PunkyBubba · 12/04/2012 12:41

Hey all, just another flying visit as I have 5 mins to spare for once!

Re:sleep.. we have had a few rough nights recently after C got to only waking once a night we are now back to 3-4 times.. :-( I put it down to teething in our case I think.. and maybe weaning too as we only started less than 2 weeks ago. I read that article someone posted on here yesterday(?) The kellymom night weaning? That helped a lot and reminded me about increasing feeds late afternoon, more cuddles.. etc.

The Bumbo never worked for us.. lucky it was borrowed and not bought.. C tries to forcefully throw himself backwards out of it within a couple of mins of being in it.. every time.. so am never happy putting him in it unless I am right there and he is surrounded by cushions.. Even then I have to take him out once he starts throwing himself backwards.. The friend who lent it to us said her little girl loved it though.

Engel, how is the helmet going? We pushed and pushed until we got a fast hospital referral for C's plagio(initially they said we had to wait 2 months). It was a total waste of time though.. The paedatrician (SP?) may as well have shrugged his shoulders.. I knew more about it than he did! He just said it will get better in time, but C would always have a slightly flat head.. Gee thanks! Luckily C had just had a growth spurt and it had improved a lot through that so I wasn't as upset/worried as I had been. I was still using the pillow at that point, but now he rolls around like a demon so stopped using that, so did more research and have bought a sleepcurve mattress (where there is a curve for the head to go in, so its not resting all night on a flat surface. It hasn't got any worse so hopefully is helping.

Re: holidays/travel.. We are off to Singapore in a month to visit family.. and DP isnt joining me for first 2 weeks, so a 12 hour flight on my own with C.. Something I am trying not to think about!!

Well C is up.. changing/feeding then veggie mush time so gotta go!

Jnice · 12/04/2012 15:58

pene - they are so fast aren't they? So glad the coffee incident was not worse!

Engelsmeisje · 12/04/2012 19:56

getting helmet fitted tomorrow Punky!

MamaMaiasaura · 12/04/2012 20:27

Re flat head - whole article in the daily fail online today.

Not been on much as so busy with monkeys. J feeding lots and longer. Just had 1.5 hour feeding session. Thinking growth spurt. Ds2 been randomly kissing her tho at last! Grin

Engelsmeisje · 12/04/2012 20:40

Just read that mama. Of course, mums are to blame for their children having flat heads (according to the fail)...we're all soooooo lazy we stick our children in car seats all day apparently Hmm

ILs head off on holiday for 10 days tomorrow - 10 whole days of no one just dropping by

I really shouldn't complain but feeling super sleepy today...zzzzzz

Bubalie · 12/04/2012 21:38

Hello everyone! Just a quick visit to say hi. Have quickly scanned through posts, re bumbo L didn't like it either, just sold mine on eBay! DH has just bought him a Jumperoo, can't wait for it to get here, tried it at my friends last week and he loved it! I need to put some more stuff on eBay to clear out as we are quickly running out of room. How's weaning going for everyone? Also, I wanted to ask for those of you who are 6 months are you on Follow on Milk, or if not 6 months yet, will you be going on Follow on - just interested in other people's experiences and views on this?

Penelope1980 · 12/04/2012 23:23

For those of you with flat headed babies, how flat are they? Just wondering cause A has a really flat head but the GPs always say he'll grow out of it even though it's the flattest head of all the babies I see. So, haven't thought about a helmet etc as have been advised against it. To be fair though now he can sit I am assured by friends and family that it is getting better, but I do worry. That's why I got the bumbo in the first place, too keep him off his head.

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 13/04/2012 00:36

IME follow on milk is a con, according to health visitor it doesn't have any more nutrients than 1st stage formula/breastmilk and I tries it with C when he was a baby and it made him extremely constipated he screamed for days Sad

CheshireDing · 13/04/2012 02:48

Can they not just have normal full fat milk once they are 6 months? P has a bit of it in her porridge with water.

We hired the baby sensory room for 1 hour today, hopefully the stimulation of trying something new will mean she sleeps better tonighr Grin

Jnice · 13/04/2012 03:38

Hi all. Just popping in before bed. I am now going to bed when Leo does and hoping that helps improve the PND and anxiety that have been getting worse.

If I get a good night I am planning on starting the babywhisperer pupd technique for naps in an attempt to get him to self soothe.

Anyone else considering it? I thought it would be helpful to 'team up' to offer each other moral support Wink

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 13/04/2012 07:08

jnice I used a combination of cc and pupd with ds and I found it worked really well, I just put him down and left the room, if he cried I left him for 2 mind then went in picked him up for a cuddle then put down again then repeat.
cheshire they're allowed cows milk in food but not as a drink before 12months as not enough nutrition.

Jnice · 13/04/2012 09:02

Thanks ed. How long before you felt it worked?

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 13/04/2012 10:20

C's first night took about 40mins to get him down and he woke once I think then second night I think it was about fifteen mins by the end of that week he was going down himself and sleeping through. But he is quite quick at most things except potty training apparently

It is v v distressing though hearing him crying, my dh did it as I couldn't cope hearing him cry.

Jnice · 13/04/2012 11:13

That's the awful part and I think we will do pupd only, at least for now. I will listen to my iPod I think! I'm planning on just tackling naps and leaving nights for now as I have a hunch he will go longer if he has learnt to self soothe during the day. Part of the problem is that he is still swaddled so can't suck his hands. I can't get him down asleep if he isn't swaddled so it's going to have to be him getting himself to sleep.

pinkpainter · 13/04/2012 11:38

Quick one but I know a few of you have been discussing helmets for flats heads recently - Radio 2 are doing a discussion on this today on the Jeremy Vine show (12 - 2).

sassy34264 · 13/04/2012 11:44

pupd? sttn? honestly im soooo thick, i cant work out what these are!

pen also glad the coffee thing wasnt worse. ive had a few things like that happen, its definately a test how good your heart is moment. jacob got the cheese knife the other day and decided to suck it- eek!

twins are 20 months today! slow down!!!!!!!

eva will be 6 months next fri.

dp has took twins out for me to get on with stuff post
he starts his new job on tuesday, but found out yesterday that the manager's job want him to have a 2nd interview on that day. argh. in a dilema now. he doesnt know how much more the pay is and im a bit like, what if its loads of extra hours/stressful etc, will it be worse for us as a family. anyone else experienced their dp/h being promoted and did it affect hours/stress etc?
they have chosen 3 people, so might not get it, but still at the point of whether he should even try really.

how are you scheh ? you seem to have disappeared. hope everything ok.

no change for me with eva. still not sitting or crawling or rolling from back to front. 2 front teeth are a little further up.

re: flat heads. a lady on my twins thread went through it. she said alot of professionals dont know enough about it and say, 'they'll get better' but some dont. i'd definately push for 2nd opinions. especially if you can see that your baby's head is flatter than most. what have you got to lose?
her ds had his ears out of alignment when you looked at him over the top of his head. (think someone said there lo on here did too)

still in nightie but getting a asda shop delivered today, so i suppose i best get dressed, unless i want to entice him with my hairy legs! Grin
i just dont know how dp keeps his hands off me! Wink

OP posts:
EdwardorEricCantDecide · 13/04/2012 12:01

Grin at your hairy legs sassy sche hasn't been in FB much lately either, hope she's ok.
STTN = sleeping through the night
PUPD= pick up put down.

Anyone know how little Beatrice is getting on?

MIL rant coming up u have been warned
Went to MIL house the other day and had mhairi dressed in a really cute white and blue tartan puffball dress with white tights an navy cardi I think she looked gorgeous, wasn't cheap outfit, was ironed perfectly and had just had the tags taken off that morning, mil then made a sympathetic face and said aww poor M you look like a wee orphan today Angry this is all because she wasn't wearing white Confused MIL friend was in at the time and MIL then went on to apologise to the friend about the state of M several times saying "I'm so sorry she usually dressed lovely" I was so angry!!
Shes usually a really nice/helpful woman doesn't interfere too much but will always help out with the kids but it just really gets my goat when she goes on about how the kids are dressed!
And breathe!

Jnice · 13/04/2012 13:00

ed - your mil sounds bonkers! I bet M looked lovely.

sassy pupd is 'pick up put down' which is a sleep training method where you stay with baby. Sttn is sleep through the night. None of that here - 4 feeds so far tonight.

I've also been thinking about Scheh - hope she is doing ok.

sassy34264 · 13/04/2012 13:03

thanks ed
Shock and Hmm at your mil. you dress m like i would dress mine on a special occasion! eva is in a faded hand me down sleepsuit and a hand me down pink cardigan today.
perhaps next time you should take her in some leggings and a top from tesco, like most kids wear! or use the mumsnet phrase 'did you mean that to be offensive' or better still, say, ' i'll dress her in whatever you like, if you want to pay for it' ha. i know you cant though when its your mil, but i do like thinking up mean retorts after the event- makes me feel better.
my mil use to comment about how they're always in sleepsuits but i dont care or change, so it feel on deaf ears. anyone else thinks they can look after 3 under 2's better than me, can be my bleeding guest! Wink

OP posts:
pinkpainter · 13/04/2012 13:20

OMG ed - I would be so angry!! How rude!!

pinkpainter · 13/04/2012 13:26

Sassy - I just don't know how you do it - I can't even imagine how hard 3 under 3s must be....

Tired today!! - 4 hours sleep after M wanted to feed loads and then DD came into bed with me at 6:30, she whispered "I love you" which was very cute, just would have been better a bit later in the morning.....

Engelsmeisje · 13/04/2012 13:29

thanks pink ...going to listen online. Just posted a picture of M in his helemt on fb page. He was so good when the guy was fitting it. No fuss at all. can't start it properly til tomorrow, have to wait for the glue to set in the helmet.

pen M's head is flat on the side because he develoepd a preference when sleeping on his back (due to his collarbone being broken). From the front it's not immediately noticeable, but you can see it when he turns his head and from above it's really clear. It has slightly affected the positioning of his ears (one is further back than the other) as well. The physio said she's seen worse though! We were told it was our choice whetehr to have a helmet or not as it was "cosmetic" but if we waited longer then it would be harder to solve. We've been really busy with him since he was born to try and prevent it (his first physio appt was arranged at 4 weeks!) but some babies won't just "grow out of it". Here they only use helmets up until a child is 12 months. After that they will just leave it, so if the baby doesn't grow out of it it's too late. I think after 12 months the soft part of the head/skull has closed.

Here (NL) we don't have to pay for it though, our insurance company covers it, whereas in the UK I think you have to pay for it unless it's medically necessary. (It would be at least 1200 euros just for the helmet!).

Just going to catch up on the rest of the thread now...
