TicTac, I agree about science being science and breastmilk being great at adapting. This is nothing to do with my 'views' being 'contradictory' to yours. You are incorrect in what you are saying, and more than that, what you said was unhelpful because many babies will not manage a total of 40 minutes (which you said was the 'optimum' time) and yet they will be perfectly ok!

You 'don't much care' if people are misled by what you said so confidently? ....that's a shame.

YeahBut · 20/02/2006 14:38

Am very unobservant, have only just spotted this thread, FGS!!! We're doing fine - Alex is a star, a really contented little chap. His sisters love him soooo much, dangerously so sometimes! Am back driving after the c-section and had my first trip out with all 3 of the children in the car today. Felt almost human again, have really missed driving. Glad to hear that everyone is doing well.

Tabs · 20/02/2006 20:56

Better late than never Yeahbut!

Been a stressful couple of days since my last post. Pippa developed awful colic, and has taken to screaming the place down in the evenings. Just got her into her basket without screaming though, so fingers crossed that we're turning a corner. Will be surprised if she doesn't wake up again soon, but I'll take any peace and quiet I can get at the moment! Wonderful stuff infacol!

Health visitor came for first visit today. Very nice lady. Had Pippa weighed and she's up to 9lb 2oz now, so has gained 7oz since last Wednesday. Should think so too the amount she's been feeding!

Latest on my expressing is that had a go late last night after she seemed to have been feeding forever, just to see if there was actually anything left for her, but nothing . Pumped for a little while anyway to try and build up some demand. Then tried expressing at 6:30 this morning from one breast just before and whilst she was feeding from the other, and got out 4oz in about 10-15 mins, so much more successful! Guess I can try and persuade DH to do a middle of the night feed now so as not to waste it .

Oh dear - think she's waking up grizzly already - better go!

3k · 20/02/2006 23:15

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice on recovery from c-section, I am feeling a bit better today and it seems the nights are worse as I find it hard to turn over etc but I think I am slowly starting to turn a corner.

Also thanks Tictac for your advice with the feed, bath, massage and feed - think I may try that tomorrow.

Ben has had a very grizzly day today, he was very wheezy last night and this morning so I made him an appointment at the doctors and he has a bit of a cold and oral thrush. Doc has given him some drops (which he spat out in disgust earlier!) and said the mucus on his chest is that of a viral infection or cold. It put my mind at rest as I thought he may have a chest infection or something. Anyway he screamed all the way to, at and from the doctors and then had a feed, slept for an hour then had an ounce and then slept for almost 5 hours. All this after being awake virtually all day from 10am this morning. Poor little chap - perhaps he is feeling miserable from his cold.

Tabs - sounds like Pippa is coming on well, 7oz in a week is great. Ben is being weighed for the first time since birth on Wednesday when we meet the health visitor so we shall see how much he has gained or lost since last Sunday.

Doesnt time fly when you have a baby?!!!!!!!

kando · 21/02/2006 08:37

Hello ladies, good to see so many of us on this thread! Hope all the babes are being good. Beth is a wee star - Yeahbut, must be something about third babies, as she's very contented like Alex is. She's also very much "loved" by her big sisters, but so far she doesn't seem to mind too much.

Feeding is going OK, although I think she's got oral thrush (got some gel from the dr but as he hasn't even seen her (she wasn't registered on their system when I rang for an appointment so I had to have a phone consultation instead) I'm beginning to wonder if it is thrush or if it's just a milk coating on her tongue). I'll hopefully get advice from one of dd2's classmates' mum who is a midwife as I don't really have much faith in my doctor! It doesn't seem to bother her much though - I think it bothers me more! I seem to be a bit more anxious about certain things this time round - Beth seems to be bringing up mouthfuls of milk after some feeds, sometimes a little bit, sometimes it looks like quite a lot. I know I'm probably worrying about nothing as she seems to be gaining weight (she hasn't been weighed properly since she was 4 or 5 days old, although I have stood on the scales holding her and she seems to have put weight on). Hopefully that will be remedied soon as I'm just waiting for a call from the "health visitor" to make an appointment to come and see us. DH has gone back to work this week after having 2 weeks off - timed perfectly as it's dd1's half term this week. He's been an absolute star during his leave - he did all the running around and chores that I normally do, whilst I sat on my behind and concentrated on the baby. Not sure how quick he'll be to say that I spend all day sitting around drinking coffee now ... although I'm sure he'll have a go!

Hope all is going well with the other babies - I just can't stop cuddling Beth at the moment, she smells so delicious and looks so gorgeous! I'm a very lucky mummy to have three beautiful dds.

Flamesparrow · 21/02/2006 09:07

Oooh... my arms are aching at the thought of new baby smell!!!

TicTac · 21/02/2006 09:53

Peyia weighs 7 pound!!! 11 ounce gain in 6 days...all since I started to combine feed...yay!!!

Hi everyone!!

Tabs · 21/02/2006 12:47

3k - too right that time flies - there doesn't seem to be time to do anything but look after Pippa! We're trying to venture out to bumps and babes again this afternoon though - just having a feed first.

Tictac - yay for Peyia!

Didn't realise that thrush was so common in babies. Health visitor considered that Pippa may have it, but we're hoping it's just nappy rash as she thought her tongue was ok, so we're trying sudocrem at the mo.

JuA · 21/02/2006 13:20

Afternoon
Feeling really up and down at the moment! One minute I seem to be coping fine, the next chaos takes over and I wonder if I will ever be organised again.
dd1 is being really good - apart from getting up at the crack of dawn! and the babies are mostly very good and they don't cry that much but sometimes I can't belive how long everything takes, from changing nappies to feeding them, making sure I have sterilised bottles and suitable food in the house for dd1.
I feel up to driving but I can't see how I am ever going to get out of the house with all 3 on my own - it takes long enough when there is both me and dh loading everything into the car.

Tic Tac - really pleased Peyia is piling on the weight!

3k - hope you are feeling better - I really struggled to move in bed for a while when I got home - I didn't remember it from last time - just keep taking pain killers if you need them and don't over do it - I am feeling just about back to normal now and it is only 3 weeks since I had mine.

Jess and Emily are both back up to their birth weights and the health visitor is coming out every Friday to weigh them - she will come for as long as I need her to - can't imagine making it to baby clinic for a while - especially as the doctors surgery don't allow pushchairs - I wonder if they make exceptions for twins - can't see how I will get them all in otherwise! 2 babies and a 2 year old - can't exactly leave one in the car park while I get the other inside!

ellenrose · 22/02/2006 13:33

I am fresh back from our long day out - new haircut so I am bouncing around like I have just stepped out of the salon! Feels great, first thing I have done for me in a while and my hair went absolutely mad with the growth hormone whilst pregnant so had to be fixed to stop me looking like the mad woman of the west Maisie was an absolute star whilst we trawled around the shops although every elderly couple stopped me to "have a look" - took me three times as long to get everything done!!

Tictac - yeay for Peyia, good to hear she is doing so well

Kando/Yeahbut - seem to be in agreement with the third baby experience - Maisie is fab and her brothers agree. Despite doing all of this twice before, I do not want to put her down - I love that baby smell and the faces she pulls when she is falling asleep are hilarious - could watch her all day but doesn't get much cleaning/cooking done

Tabs - sorry to hear about Pippa - colic can be exhausting for you and babe but she is obviously doing well in all other aspects - 7oz is great - hope you and she are having a better day today

3k - hope Ben is feeling better as well - poor little chap

JuA - can't take buggys in your surgery ?!? how on earth are you meant to manage

Chloe55 · 22/02/2006 16:12

Hi ladies,

Soz been away so long but as I'm sure you can all relate it seems I never get the time to do anything other than eat/sleep/feed/change nappies at the moment!

Me and Oscar are doing well though, he has been reweighed and is now 9lbs 14oz so he is still a big boy, glad to hear Peyia is chunking up too Tic-Tac although I couldn't even imagine what a baby smaller than Oscar's size looks like because to me he seems so tiny .

I have just about mastered the art that is breastfeeding - what a farce! Who'd have thought that something so natural could be so bloody difficult. However, Oscar seems to want to feed almost every 1/2 hour during the day at the mment - it's a good job my boobs are the size of melons or I'd never be able to keep up!

Right will take some time to catch up on what you have all been up to - can't believe I have had to stay away so long!

4blue1pink · 22/02/2006 20:02

Hi girls my first appearance on here - i think........baby brain has kicked in big time.

My bab still has no name but we call him barry ..in jest..he feeds and feeds and feeds!

Got to go its feed time! Hope you are all good!

Flamesparrow · 22/02/2006 20:07

You make me feel sooo much better... we still can't agree on names, so the longer Barry is nameless, the better I'll look

Chloe55 · 22/02/2006 21:09

I am having my first few hours alone with ds whilst DH is watching the footie at a mates. I must admit I am very nervous, mainly because he keeps making these horrible noises like he is choking and he is being quite reluctant to feed which isn't like him at all. I think I am just being paranoid but why does he choose tonight to go all weird on me?! He is lying in his pram just looking around now, not sleeping, not crying, God I need to chill out!!

TicTac · 22/02/2006 21:24

LOL Chloe - the noises are enough for you to just stare at them to make sure all is well aren't they!!
You will get used to them soon enough though and know what they mean. I am now able to put Peyia to bed while she is still awake and she takes herslef off to sleep but it is not without lots of Jurasic noises
Well done the BF...you're right though, it is hard work. Peyia has fed no end this afternoon! I feel like a mummy moo cow!

TABS - I hope Pippa is doing ok. Coleif is another product you can use that is meant to be great. The only trouble is you have to drop it into milk so if you can't expres...it's impossible!

All - hope you are all doing ok and babes are getting into their/ your little routines now.

AND HOW COLD?!?!?! Not too pleasant to go out with the pushchair at the minute...brrrr.

Chloe55 · 22/02/2006 21:33

Been snowing here today, presumably your end too TicTac?

He has settled now so hopefully when he wakes up he will feed properly again. Just when I was beginning to feel all confident and mumsie he goes and gives me another step

hotmama · 23/02/2006 08:42

Morning girls Bit tired as dd2 decided to do cluster feeding between midnight and 3 a.m. - so not much sleep for me! Oh well, mw coming to day to do the 2 week check so hopefully dd2 has put on loads of weight - she sure feeds and poohs enough!

Feeding is going so much better than it did with dd1, no longer using nipple shields although my nips are sometimes still sore. I'm going to a La Leche meeting tomorrow so will ask for more help re positioning - but I think I'm doing O.K.

Dd2 only seems to be waking once during the night for feeding (ignoring last night ) so I don't think this is too bad - crossed fingers she will be a good sleeper like dd1.

Bad mummy alert - dd1 has got conjuntivitis but she is still going to nursery - the GP advised to keep her at home - I said she has been booked in full-time as I have had a section - so he said O.K. we'll just treat it aggressively to get it cleared asap

My surgery has the same rule re pushchairs - I still took mine in as I had both dd's and I wasn't going to carry them - luckily the surgery didn't say anything. The same rule applies at the baby clinic - so won't be taking dd2 to get weighed then!

How is everybody doing, I assume we are all taking it day by day - it does seem a bit easier with dd2 compared to dd1 - I even get showered and dressed before midday!

Jasnem · 23/02/2006 09:29

Looks like Flame will be joining you soon!

Chloe55 · 23/02/2006 09:32

Morning girls,

Well, not a good night's sleep really but feeling very guilty this am. Ds was very grunty last night and snorted all the time, I have mentioned this to the midwife before but she said all babies make these noises. Anyway, after feeding and nappy changing and cuddles he would still cry and cry when I put him down, sounding like he couldn't breathe properly but again I was told this was normal and that he would settle if I left him a few minutes - this I did and eventually he would settle. Gave him a feed this am and both his little nostrils are totally bunged up with snot!!! I have managed to clear them andhe is more settled but now I feel awful that the noises he was making was due to the fact that he was having a few breathing difficulties and I just left him to cry - I should have gone with my first instincts!

Anyway, hopefully his snuffles will eventually die down poor boy.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

hotmama · 23/02/2006 10:43

Chloe55 - dd2 is a right snuffler. When feeding it is like a pig searching for truffles - honestly she snorts! PMSL the first time she did it. Dd2 seems very muscusy - I think this is because I had a section and she didn't have the mucus 'squeezed' out of her IYKWIM.

Just fed dd2 and braced myself for the pain - but seems O.K. after the first few sucks - just liberally applying laninsoh seems to be helping - at least I have kept off the nipple shields all the time.

Chloe55 · 23/02/2006 10:52

Lansinoh is an absolute godsend, I was having problems a few days ago with bf and midwife prescribed that ointment and they are fully healed - fantastic stuff! Oops ds crying, must be all this talk of boobs

TicTac · 23/02/2006 11:00

Morning ladies...yay to flame finally being on her way!

chloe - yes we have had a covering of snow in the night...too cold to go out with the pushchair though! Don't worry about DS snot situation, it will take him some time to clear all the gunk!!

DD has decided she would have a hungry day/ night...fed every 2 hours last night which is not like her...maybe she is on another growth spurt.

Where is Tabs? Getting some rest and I hope Pippa colic is clearing!

OP posts:
Frizbetheexpansionset · 23/02/2006 11:21

Hi Ladies just crashing on you
Glad to see your all doing ok, Hotmama n chloe my dd was a snorter too, thought I'd brought a pig home 1st night from hosptial kept me awake all night! Did you know you can get a squirty thing from the chemists to use to suck out all the snot, might make life a bit easier, or the doc can perscribe saline drops, which you squirt up nose and will aid breathing.
Hope to join you on here soon

Tabs · 23/02/2006 12:14

I'm here TicTac - just struggling to find much time to post at the mo - my threads tend to be 'help' style ones at the moment!

Infacol is definitely helping the colic, although certainly not cleared yet, but night time sleeping is still a huge problem for us. She'll sleep during the day, but at night she just wants to feed or scream (due to hunger or colic or both!). I only got 3 hours sleep last night, as she kept me up until gone 4am. Am a bit like a zombie now! Should have slept when she did in the evening yesterday, but thought she was just having a brief snooze rather than a 2.5hr sleep!

Really wanted to get her into a routine this week, but can't bring myself to try whilst she's still so unsettled.

Got a new friend from NHS antenatal classes coming over this afternoon. She's due end of next week, so hope I don't put her off when she sees what hard work it is! Expect Pippa will be a tart again and be really good whilst she's here though .

Chloe - don't feel guilty - it's all one great big learning experience for us all at the moment!
