Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yikes! Only been off this for a couple of days and loads to catch up on! So apologies if I don't respond to everything that's gone on... will do my best.

Sarah - your post could have been written by me too. LO was having a good week in terms of sleeping, but the last two nights not so good. Teething has come back, which means feeding isn't fun as she cries her way through the bottles, and she's also snuffly with a cold. So night times have been putting her down in the crib, sleeps for 30 mins, then cries and refuses to go back in the crib. She's been with us in our bed for most of the night. But, I'm guessing the cold and teething is what is setting her back. HOpefully when she feels better she'll go back to sleeping in the crib.

Also, Sarah - yes, my LO thrashes about loads - every night. She turns her head left and right really fast, lifts her legs up in the air, and keeps knocking her dummy out, almost punching herself in the face. When I was on my own last week, although she slept really well, I kept having to stop her from waking herself up by stopping the punches!! I wondered if it was something about her, but just think we must have active sleeping babies!! Then I took comfort from that Pampers (I think) advert with a sleeping baby who turns and moves around loads in the cot to advertise the fact they are very active at night! So, must be pretty normal!!

Also, did someone mention not liking carrots? Tried mine on carrots yesterday and her face was a picture... a real "yikes, Mum, what are you giving me???" but some of it must have gone in as there were orange bits in her poo today Grin Grin She's just had some butternut squash that sort of went ok, but I was wondering if I'd started weaning too early - but she really enjoyed her apple, pear and rice last week so perhaps the veg is taking longer to get used to - plus, the teething thing probably not helping. Might try porridge or baby rice for breakfast each day now, and then fruit or veg for one of the other meals.

Sat her up today and she sat on her own for about 10 seconds or so, before tumbling forward (don't worry... I was there to catch her!!!) Was amazed she'd could stay sitting for so long though! Sitting like a gorilla with her arms supporting her in the front.

TP - ooh, hope conjunctivitis clears up quickly.

100 - Yay to the lie in. I had a real heart to heart with my OH yesterday. Finding it all a bit much with no break, living out in the country so no neighbours/pram walks/friends half an hour away and no one to leave LO. I really really missed my mum yesterday. But, felt more positive today - going to aim to have more things to do with LO - and OH has promised to give me a morning or afternoon off on the weekend where I can go and do something ... if he has LO now, I just use the time to put some washing on, make her feed up, do some cooking etc etc... not really a break. So need to plan to do someting out of the house.

And, yes Mr Sebs (love that!!) came back Wednesday night ... but he's going back to Algeria in a month so it'll be back on my own again for about 3 or 4 nights :( Have to get used to it as it's part of his job. At least it'll be 2 months till the next one after that.

Minky - is Mr Minky now back?? Well done on surviving the week.

Hope everyone has a good half term week - we've got the kids back tonight and OH is off Monday and Wednesday - so we're off to the Trafford centre tomorrow! OH hates shopping but it's something to do that's indoors and the kids have money and vouchers to spend so good opportunity!

sebs71 · 12/02/2012 17:06

Oh, god, sorry that was an essay and a half.... sorry...!!

sarahseager · 12/02/2012 18:46

Thanks sebs. We had a slightly better night last night. I think i just get unrealistic in my expectation some times. It's just so much easier to have them in bed with you sometimes and lovely and snuggly!Smile

Lo is definitely an active girly, it's so frustrating when they're just off to sleep and they punch themselves awake Grin

Weaning is going well here I hope, only had rice and sweet potato so far but trying pear tomorrow! It's so much fun! Will look forward to trying carrot after some of the reactions out there!

Our lo had a gunky eye for what seemed like ages when she was around 3 months, one nurse told us that it was so common that we should try not to give her drops and just bathe it but it became so sore that we had to give her the drops and then it cleared up in no time! We just has gunk tho, no pinkness.

Wishing you all wonderful evenings, lo is currently very tired but she's such a bad napped I think we're going to have a very grumpy girl by bedtime!

Xx

sarahseager · 12/02/2012 19:38

*napper not napped!

feralgirl · 12/02/2012 20:05

Sarah Grin at the punching themselves awake (sorry, it's just the way you put it!) When DD's tired she does the thing where she rubs her head on her bed and she woke herself up today with her arm through the bars of the cot.

Sebs sorry for the lack of breaks. That's rough. It takes a real strength of will to walk away from the laundry etc I find. I'm just so not used to doing nothing and I find it hard to relax when I know that there are chores to do and get guilt if I -god forbid - pamper myself a bit or have the luxury of time away from the family. Good on Mr Sebs for offering to help out, I find I also have to tell Mr Feral in advance that he is to order me to take him up on his offers of help iyswim.

Sad at the gammy eye TP Breast milk is good for clearing mild infections as it's got all those antibodies in it but like Ssmile said, conjunctivitis is a bugger (DS has it atm as it goes and he keeps re-infecting himself).

Hope you managed to tire out DD Ssmile and that she's already in bed snoozing and not planning to wake up until, oooh, at least 9.30 tomorrow (although, judging from what you've told us about her and her sleep, I'm guessing this is unlikely!)

Hurrah for the lie-in 100, DH is brill about letting me sleep in. If he's home in the morning then he'll get DS up and take him to nursery and leave me and DD to kip which, I think, is the main reason that we're still married Grin

DD's also doing some wobbly sitting and then keeling over today; she was wearing a disposable nappy so I thought I'd giver her another go in a reusable tomorrow to give her a bit of ballast Grin

In theory she should be knackered right now but I've just put her in her cot and she's woken up. I can hear her giggling and chattering away to herself so I'd better go and see just what she thinks she's playing at, naughty girl!

ssmile · 12/02/2012 20:11

Forgot to say TP I put cream on my Lo cheeks everynight and I put it on both cheeks at the same time so the poor little mite makes me laugh as she doesn't know which side to move her head towards my fingers so actually ends up looking straight ahead very frustrated she can't eat my fingers. Did I explain that right sorry my brain foggy I must go to bed its been a long day.
Long week ahead with both girls to myself all half term doubt I will see much of DH all week as he mostly out of the house 7am-7pm so not around to help with day or bed/bath. Lucky my DD1 is bribeable with princess stickers &stories for getting herself into bed and waiting nicely whilst I get babe down :)
I Have requested for my bday present that next Monday DH takes day off work (DD1 will be back at school, hopefully) and he can have baby for two hours whilst I have two hours to myself at the local countryclub leisure centre, swim pool, gym, hottub etc then join me with babe for lunch &big bit of cake :o the first time I will have two whole hours to myself in six months. Fingers Xed no one will be ill next Monday....that's what tends to happen if I try to plan anything for ME!

feralgirl · 12/02/2012 20:37

Oooh, that sounds lovely Ssmile. Good luck!

QueenRunningGeekMum · 12/02/2012 21:45

Ssmile that's an excellent idea for your birthday!

Btw thought I'd let you all know that I threw the rice away! Ds has been better at eating today, tried to swallow a sun dried tomato at lunch and enjoyed licking a green olive! Left the rice plain and that seemed to help.

I would have had an excellent night last night with ds only awake at 2 and 4 but got woken at 12 by next door playing a song really loudly - oddly enough just the one track. To cowardly to go on the aibu threads but aibu to complain to her? It's not often we hear stuff so hopefully just a one off.

On phone, can't remember who said what but Sad at gunky eye, Grin at punching self awake and Grin at baby not knowing which way to turn when cream applied!

Minkyjj · 12/02/2012 23:14

On phone so apologies for non specific responses. Mr minky back safe and sound and we survived the week but been very tough as lo been poorly. Started with a gunky eye just over a week ago and progressed into a cold/throat and ear infection. Been to drs and he is on antibiotics which are kicking in. I also have the bug and feel rotten so know how he was feeling. Weaning going well - lo absolutely loves pear (I give him two large icecubes of pear mixed with 1 tablespoon of baby rice and he finishes the lot. He also loves apple and creamy porridge - managing to do two meals a day already - breakfast and dinner at 4/5pm. Not too keen on carrots but I know from past experience with other dcs that the veggies take time - can take 20 tastings before they like thr flavour - so keep going. Going to try avocado and banana, butternut and sweet potato this week.
Well off to sleep for me now - hope you all are okay Smile

ssmile · 13/02/2012 07:10

Ooh minkyj hope you and Lo feel better soon.

Some nasty old bugs around at mo. I don't think my Lo has been right all week. It might explain poor reaction to food this week. She woke sat with big piece of dried wax in her outer ear, then fell asleep at 5pm and was down for the night. Sunday had three hour nap after falling asleep literally in my arms at the lunch table having already had an hours nap in the morning. Then woke with more big wax coming out of her ear. She had been playing with that ear and I hadn't been sure if she had just found a new skill or it was mild ear ache. Now I suspect it was earache as she was cuddley and hard work the last few days with a cough. Hopefully its on its way our now. She ate some of my sweet potato mash after her long nap when I was having dinner with DD1 and held piece of banana in her hand squashed it and tried to eat some as pud. I'm doing mix of purees and help yourself baby food. Off out all day today with GrandPs &girls hope we all have fun and Lo is ok.

Happy Monday!

tiddleypompom · 13/02/2012 07:45

smile I shall take your advice and apply cream to both cheeks St once! I think that's great :o

Yay to a few hours off to chill out and pamper - I have 'booked' a date in March with DH who will take day off and spend it with DS whilst I go for a pamper day with a friend (also a mum). Can't wait! It appears that the 4 month mark is when a break is really needed!

DS eye - thanks all for your advice and sympathy. It hadn't got any worse and is definitely not pink and gunky, so am hoping it was just an irritation that made it water.

Re: neighbours noise - personally I wouldn't bring it up with them to complain if it were a one-off (next time maybe) though I sympathise with you! Our window cleaners were unceremoniously sacked by a v cranky me when DS was about 2 months as they always made an almighty noise doing his nursery window during nap times! Not posting on AIBU? Very good move as it is getting worse on there these days - horrid responses with no support, compassion or uunderstanding at all. Makes me :(

tiddleypompom · 13/02/2012 07:48

By the way I am loving tales of weaning - not long fir us now I suspect but great to hear of various first taste purees and how they go down. Happy days!

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 13/02/2012 09:09

Better night last night but god I feel like shit not a good start to half term. Dd is at home all week as can't afford to send her to nursery during tge holidays when there is no funding _sad]. Hopefully mum will have her for a few hours one day.

Really got to get my bum moving on my cv have to find a ft job Sad

sarahseager · 13/02/2012 10:02

Just wrote a huge wingeing post and page crashed and lost it all - maybe a good thing! Hmm

I really struggle with getting lo to nap in the day, she fights it so much and will only nap if in the car or pram which is fine but I don't want to have to be out and about all the time to get her to sleep!! Especially as I'm feeling a bit poop today with a cold and she had another not great night.

I just find it so draining having to walk her round to get her to sleep when she is clearly so tired but just won't go off - she's getting really heavy for that now too! If I could get her to nap in the day even just for a few 30 min ones like she used to I think I would feel far less frazzled! I'm also concerned that she's just going to get overtired which may be affecting her at night?!?!

Anyone else feel the need to start today again!:)

feralgirl · 13/02/2012 14:09

Gah, DD woke up with a cold and a gammy eye today, identical to yours tiddley by the sounds of it. I've been humming and hahing about whether to take her to the drs but figured a good long afternoon kip will probably do her more good than sitting in a germ-filled waiting room with loads of other snotty kids!

Sarah, my DD can also resist her nap a bit and has just started waking when I put her in the cot after having fallen asleep on me. I just put her white noise on and lie down next to her and stroke her head until she drops off. One way to get her to close her eyes is to stroke down her nose or across her eyebrows which usually does the trick but it really takes all my patience sometimes, esp if it's lunchtime and I'm hungry!

feralgirl · 13/02/2012 14:13

Oh and GeekMum, perhaps this thread could give you some ideas about how to passive-aggressively make your feelings known to your neighbour? (warning, not for the easily offended, but then you're a secondary teacher aren't you, so I'm guessing you're fairly immune! Grin)

ssmile · 14/02/2012 07:41

feralgirl that thread made me laugh out loud last night my DH wanted to know what I was reading and was shocked at the language which I suppose did sound worse when read out loud :) hope your Lo is better soon.

sarah I would keep trying with naps at home and I echo what feral said if you uncomfy leaving babe to cry without you then try lying with them. I find my Lo when overtired will cry her loudest in the 30secs before she konks out. Time &time again I'm just about to give up on getting her to nap only to walk in the bedroom and she drops silent and asleep in a second. Babies can take twenty minutes to fall asleep I tend to leave mine if I know she is tired and just mildly fussing but I get quite anxious if she really crying and only leave her 1-2mins before offering reassurance. Gd luck all babies do get there in the end its just surviving it in the meantime. At least your get fit from walking or can you get someone else to walk her whilst you nap?

We had a new hit last night with buttery toast fingers last night. Lo loved holding them, squishing them and sucking with all her mite :) I remember DD1 used to love doing that too that for a while she had toast with everything so I could feed her other stuff in between her sucking on her toast. Hardly any of the toast got eaten just the butter sucked off :o

QueenRunningGeekMum · 14/02/2012 08:04

Pmsl at the thread feral

Thanks for tip on buttery toast - will try that. Have been giving plain bread without butter. It's great to hear what you're all trying Smile I'm going to try pear purée today!

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 14/02/2012 08:20

Ssmile your dh will be wondering what sort of online company your keeping Grin

Ds will always go off in tge car but if I get him before it's too late I can get him off in the swing, I do however put a budgie cover blanket over him Blush

I do remember though from when dd was little it was certainly true tgat sleep made her sleep! With being poorly ds is going straight to out of control overtired Sad

sarahseager · 14/02/2012 11:28

Thanks for nap tips, think I need to start putting her down for a sleep when we're in the house instead of waiting for her to go off - sounds silly saying that out loud but I guess because she was too small to put down for naps previously I've never really got into the habit of trying to make it a routine. Hopefully she will learn!

DP has been a true hero today and taken a day off work to look after lo whilst I stay in bed, I had a bad cold yesterday which has got so much worse overnight with lack of sleep playing a big part! Really don't think I could have looked after lo on my own today feeling like this. Would love to dose myself up on beechams but bf means just sticking to the paracetamol. Fingers crossed a day of resting will help but it is very strange sitting here in bed in an empty house!

Wishing you all a lovely valentines day Smile xx

tiddleypompom · 14/02/2012 13:05

sarah I think a day in bed must be the best ever Valentines gift - such a shame you are feeling poorly though. I hope the rest helps - my mum always said that you could sleep off a cold...

...which I think DS has done over the last 2 days! His normal 2 hour afternoon nap was 3 and a half hours yesterday. I was tempted to wake him (fear of being up in the night) but didn't have the heart. He was still congested last night, but much better today. There must be loads of bugs about at the moment.

Hot buttered toast - divine, how could you not love it?! I am SO excited about weaning now, though I expect this thrill may wear off eventually, once our lovely kitchen is plastered with pureed sweet potato and squashed banana.

So anyway - how are the hen night arrangements coming on Wink

feralgirl · 14/02/2012 13:29

Oh yes! DS weaned himself on my toast quite a while before I had ever intended to give him solids. He used to just look up from his morning feed and snatch my breakfast off my plate Shock

I have now got the cold and, after a rubbish night, at 8am I had just had enough of DD so thrust her at DH while I went back to sleep. He returned her to me at 10 o'clock and she's been zonked out every since!

Gah to no Beechams Sarah, I feel your frustration. DH is all Lemsipped and I am Envy as I could really do with some decongestant.

I have spent my Valentine's Day so far writing a job application Hmm I should prob go and thank DH properly for my lie-in as he has been out with DS to give me some quiet to get it done, what a star.

summerpixie · 14/02/2012 13:43

Thought I'd come and share a little trick that seems to get my dd sleeping when she is tired. I give her ear a little rub and straight away her eyes shut and she stops crying! She loves having her ears cleaned and stops all movement when she's having it done! I can't guarantee this will work for everyone.
I did 6week 6pack yesterday and I ache all over. I thought I would target the flabby gut area instead of doing shred but it seems Jillian Michaels likes to make you work everything.
DD has started to tell me when she is hungry but I am holding off feeding her too much as she is refusing her milk lately. She pouts her lips and moves them around like she is chewing food. Such a picture.
Feral are you looking to move schools or applying for a promotion?

How many of you have started LO on strips of fruit n veg already? I don't think DD will be ready for a while as she still hasn't grasped what to do with her tongue when eating.
Tmi but why are babies able to stink out a whole room with their smelly poop when they are on solids?

sebs71 · 14/02/2012 14:09

With our daytime naps, if in the house, I tend to have to hold her and rock her to sleep... then put her in her bouncy chair to sleep. If I put her in the crib or cot she'd wake up in 5 minutes. She does occasionally sleep of her own accord if she's in the chair or swing but not that often. I know I should be getting her to sleep more on her own accord by putting her down properly, but I get nervous that she won't get any proper nap time- and right now I'd rather she get naps... one week I'll pluck up the courage to really give it go.

Sounds like we've all got stinky colds :( Boo to winter!

Well, as I thought, got OH a lovely "Fiance" Valentine Card and a new wallet... and nothing in return :( He did say that he was going to go out at lunchtime today from work to get something. We went to the Trafford Centre yesterday and I tried to separate from him for a bit, but he did have the kids so claims he couldn't get anything! I reminded him that only last week he had Heathrow Terminal 5 shops at his disposal for 2 hours... He he he!!! He's hopeless at remembering anything, so totally forgiven!

I'm glad someone said that babies take a while to get used to veg... so far LO likes the pear, apple and LOVES baby rice - but not so keen on squash, fruity porridge and really doesn't like carrot. So, pear today and will try banana this week too. Was thinking that perhaps I'd started to early but the baby rice went down a treat this morning so maybe it's just with the foods she doesn't like so much.

I can't believe how much she's "grown" in the last couple of weeks. She seems to have gone from a newborn to the next level - she's sitting up (well arms supporting her forwards) for 10 seconds or more, she's got the crawling motion with on tummy (but no strength yet) and she's currently bouncing away in the jumperoo type thing we've got. Plus, we got some 6-9 month clothes this weekend... and she's in a 9-12 month t-shirt today that totally fits her (but I'm guessing it's just badly sized!!) And it's lovely how well she plays with toys now too. God, everyone is right - this does go fast!

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 14/02/2012 18:19

Funny how a valentines day in bed means something totally different when you have children Grin
